@Miren Hawthorn@Dido Bleaklane3/26/26Rosalyn was still feeling a bit angry at that Miren girl, for all of her comments. Her snarkiness really wasn't necessary at the moment, but Rosie supposed that their could be a reason for her attitude. Maybe she was having struggles at home, or some sort of an insecurity that she wasn't revealing to anyone. Regardless, Rosie decided not to say anything mean, though internally she was really itching to give her a taste of her own medicine.
"Lessons? Oh, I had Potions earlier, and Flying. I just love brewing stuff, do you guys? It's almost like baking, but even more magical somehow!" she said, in response to Dido's question.
"Oh, Mandrakes? Those little things can really be quite loud." she said, already hearing the phantom ringing in her ears from when she'd done that a bit ago.
Looking at the clock, she realized that it was time to rinse out her hair, and she couldn't wait to do that.
"I'm going to rinse my hair, okay?" she asked, more just trying to let the others know. She probably wouldn't be able to talk for a bit, since she needed to focus on the task at hand, or she risked messing it all up and ruining her hair!

Miren hummed at Rosalyn’s answer. It turned out that all three of them were Slytherins. That was a small, meaningless plus for both Dido and Rosalyn in Miren’s eyes. They must’ve been sorted into the House of the Snake for a reason after all, and it was at least something Miren had in common with those two. Perhaps that was why she felt just a tiny, barely significant bit closer to them. “What’s with the smile?” Miren turned to Dido, still sounding distant though not so cold this time. Observant as she was, she noticed Dido’s smile despite the girl’s attempt to hide it. And even if her face barely showed it, it seemed to have piqued her interest.
Dido tried to defuse the tension by bringing up their classes, and Miren, despite her cold front, couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy upon hearing about Dido’s previous experience. “Mandrakes,” Miren repeated after Dido with a slight scoff, her face showing clear signs of disdain at the mention of those screeching plants. “No wonder, those must be a nuisance to pretty much everyone,” she replied simply, her tone losing just a bit more of the coldness. It was barely noticeable, but it was a change nonetheless.
Soon enough, Rosalyn joined the conversation about classes, adding another question, this time about Potions. “Not really.” That was another thing Miren didn’t particularly enjoy, though it was more tolerable than Mandrakes. “I prefer Defense Against the Dark Arts,” she added, pausing for a moment as if contemplating something, but in the end, she did decide to answer Dido’s original question about classes after all: “That was my last lesson.”
Miren shrugged her shoulders at Rosalyn’s mention of rinsing her hair. Honestly, she couldn’t care less. Dido, on the other hand, might’ve been bothered a bit more, as it meant Miren’s attention moving to her entirely. For a moment, she just observed her before finally raising an eyebrow and speaking up: “You’re not very confident, are you?” Surprisingly enough, this time, it was meant to be nothing more than a simple observation, though it probably sounded like another judgmental comment with Miren’s usual tone. Unfortunately, she had a hard time showing emotions other than annoyance in front of most people and sounded bothered by pretty much everything almost all the time, although the reality was often different.

OOC note:Reducio1) At this point in the school year, Dido is not thinking at all clearly about people (especially Ravenclaws) and while everything said is true in her own belief, she is often very wrong/skewed.
While Dido heard Miren’s question about her smile, she managed to completely ignore it as she listened to Rosie instead. No one was forcing her to respond to anything- especially if she could just pretend to be more focused on what another person was saying. So, probably seeming either rude, stupid or just odd, Dido didn’t respond.
Miren, on the other hand, responded relatively quickly to Dido’s own question about classes, apparently sympathising with Dido’s experience with the torturous mandrakes. It was strange hearing such… empathetic words come from Miren’s cold delivery, in which Dido managed to convince herself there was a tiny speck of warmth. Rosalyn, ever kind and helpful, filled them in on the morning she had had. Dido nodded excitedly as Rosie talked about Potions and Flying classes, which happened to be Dido’s two favourite classes, only occasionally stealing glances at Miren to see the girl’s expression.
Miren answered Rosalyn rather impassively, simply saying, “Not really” to the question of whether she loved potions. Dido looked at Miren- or at Miren’s dark hair and uniform as, while Dido could readily look into Rosie’s green eyes, locking eyes with Miren herself was not quite as trivial for Dido.
Defence against the Dark Arts. Of course. Of course that was Miren’s favourite class.
Rosie eventually turned away from the conversation, mentioning having to rinse out the dye and Dido swallowed, somewhat nervously. This girl, Miren, didn’t seem to be exactly the sort she would want to make small talk with. Though that wasn’t hugely special as Dido felt similarly towards the vast majority of her cruel and cunning housemates.
Eventually, as Dido looked anywhere but directly at Miren, the girl said, “You’re not very confident, are you?” in a matter-of-fact tone. In partial shock and a small amount of outrage, Dido looked up and stared straight at the Slytherin, no longer averting her gaze,
“I’m sorry- what?” she asked, still thrown, before catching her constant apology and adding, “No- not sorry. Just… what?!”

Rosie twisted the faucet on the sink, and was immediately met with a problem. She didn't want to go back to her dorm or find a shower or anything, she wanted to get this done now. But, she also was struggling quite a bit to fit her head between the faucet and the sink to get her hair wet. She ended up just flipping her hair over her head, letting it fall over her eyes, and managing to get the tips in the sink. Score one, Rosie!
She began rinsing out the dye, using some shampoo because she thought that was a step, but even if it wasn't, she just didn't want to have to do it again later.
Through the sound of the rushing water, she could hardly hear the conversation going on between the others. She did, however, catch the tones. She heard the second that Miren made some sort of comment, and Dido's response. Rosie turned off the sink, finally done with the hair, and caught the last bit of Dido's reply.
"No-not sorry. Just... what?!"
Rosie had absolutely no context, but she was proud of Dido for not apologizing about whatever had just happened.
"Okay, it's done! What did I miss?" she asked, as she began to brush out her hair with a comb she'd packed in her bag. With the curls, she could only really brush it while soaking wet, or else her hair would get frizzy and bushy and very very tangled, which Rosie was not in the mood to deal with at all.

Dido seemed to completely ignore Miren’s question about her smile, to which Miren just raised an eyebrow. It was pretty obvious that Dido was not exactly enjoying her presence, and while Miren didn’t do anything to make it easier for the girl, she didn’t pry for an answer either. The smile wasn’t so intriguing after all.
What did pique Miren’s interest, however, was that Dido seemed to be avoiding eye contact. Specifically with her. And while that wasn’t so surprising, considering how much the girl disliked Miren’s presence, it was something worth noting and perhaps using later on.
Surprisingly enough, Dido wasn’t as defenseless as Miren thought. The girl’s reaction to her question about confidence clearly intrigued her. It even earned the slightest smirk tugging at Miren’s lips. It was unclear whether that was because of amusement or a certain pride of Dido finally standing up for herself in a way. Perhaps a bit of both. Because in the end, Dido might not have been so different from a certain part of Miren hidden behind all the cold and distant demeanour.
It was then that Rosalyn returned with a question. “Not much. Just your friend here, finally finding some courage,” Miren shrugged her shoulders while answering the girl with dyed hair. Then she turned to Dido. “Good job. Though you might want to try to sound more sure of yourself next time. Helps a lot.” It was hard to tell if the praise was sincere because of Miren’s usual stoic tone. The truth was, however, that she was slowly letting her guard down.

2) So sorry for the wait! GCSEs have been taking over my life!
What was she thinking? And what was she thinking? Dido immediately coloured when she registered the slightly more aggressive tone she had used, not believing that she had had the gall to speak like that. And, only a millisecond later, Dido began wondering what Miren was thinking. Was she angry? Should Dido draw her wand? Would Rosalyn help Dido? Was she going to die in a school bathroom?! To be fair to Dido, by the time her worries had reached post-mortem, she had recognised the hint of smile on Miren’s face and had managed to call back her mind.
So Dido’s question shifted from a simple fear towards Miren’s reaction to a more complex, curious want- need- to know why Miren was smirking. Which was not dissimilar to the reverse of their previous exchange.
As Dido puzzled internally, not even thinking about the fact her jaw was still clenched and her fingers were shaking in residual tension, Rosie piped up and asked what was going on. Dido didn’t immediately answer. Instead, she glanced at Miren, Miren’s eyes to be exact, and blinked slowly, actively letting her speak first rather than passively letting herself be talked over. Of course, when Miren did reply, it almost shocked Dido. She had said, “Not much. Just your friend here, finally finding some courage,” which was as on the nose as it could be but became even “worse?”, “more?”- Dido couldn’t find the words to explain how her reaction shifted when Miren finally continued, “Good job. Though you might want to try to sound more sure of yourself next time. Helps a lot.”
It wasn’t the content itself that surprised Dido, that caused her eyes to widen ever so slightly, but the almost warm tone with which Miren had spoken. Dido glancing back at Rosalyn quickly, anxious to check whether she had heard the same slight drop in hostility, before looking at Miren again. Dido nodded slowly, in equal parts curiosity, confusion and general good-natured agreement, before muttering, “Thanks. I think?”
She then turned back again to Rosie and genially asked, “So, is that all done for your hair now?” with a pleasant tone, if still a little tense.

Sorry, both of you! I've been on a trip and had exams, but I'm back! I hope that your GCSEs are going well Dido, and that you feel better Miren! And yeah, Dido's amazing!!!
Rosie listened to the interaction between both girls in the bathroom as it got a bit more tense, if that was even possible, since it already was pretty awkward.
She heard Miren's backhanded comment, if backhanded was the right word for it, and felt that it was unnecessarily rude.
"Whoa, that's kinda cold." she said quietly, almost muttering it, as she finished brushing her hair. She wasn't doing it out of necessity, but instead because she didn't want to seem awkward and like she was just standing there.
Why people chose to say things like that out loud, instead of just in their head or not at all, always boggled Rosie. She personally found that it was much easier to be kind, because that made people want to be around you and like you more.
When Dido turned back to her and asked if her hair was finished, Rosie snapped out of her own thoughts, pulled back to the present.
"Oh, yeah! I think so, at least. Well, it was great to meet both of you!" she said, grabbing her things quickly, grateful for the escape opportunity. If they wanted to stay and work things through, she knew that it would be easier without a third person standing there awkwardly.
After Dido asked if her hair was done, Rosalyn snapped out of her thoughts.

Truth to be told, Dido reminded Miren of her younger self in a way. Perhaps that was the reason she seemed almost pleased when Dido stood up for herself. It sort of gave her the pleasure of not watching someone else wipe the floor with her own younger, naive self. Dido’s confusion and fear reminded her of the present, however, and while the slightest of Miren’s smiles didn’t disappear altogether, she tried to keep her emotions at bay. Tried to keep the real Miren hidden. Because that’s how she had grown to protect herself. Because showing what she really felt became forbidden at some point.
But alas, for some reason, it was harder with Dido. Was it that the girl reminded her of her own past so much? The version of herself she still felt deep down, she still pitied and yet hated so much? Miren didn’t have the answer. At least not yet. And while her mind screamed at her not to inquire, to stay as far away as possible, she was too curious to let it be. And Rosalyn's leaving gave her the perfect chance.
And so there they stood. Just her and Dido, no witnesses. “Don’t tell me you’re gonna bail too, now,” she started. “Or was that sudden flow of courage just a spur-of-the-moment thing?” With that, Miren let herself slide down with her back against the wall to sit on the floor. “Don’t let it be just that,” she murmured while leaning her head back and closing her eyes, now quieter than before, but still loud enough for Dido to hear. It was hard to tell whether she actually felt some sympathy for Dido or was just speaking to her younger self, saying what she wished she had realized sooner.

1) While everything written is true for Dido, much is intentionally incorrect (eg: Dido is not in Ravenclaw)
As Rosalyn left, Dido flashed a quick smile in her direction, grateful to have spent time with the sweet girl but ever so slightly annoyed that she was just leaving. Specifically, leaving Dido with Miren who, despite the occasional glimpse of warmth, had seemed odd if not cruel in her commentary. Watching the newly pink head of hair leave, Dido momentarily considered following in her stead, even going so far as to make a half-turn away from Miren and the bathroom, back towards the door, back towards the relative safety of the corridors where a snake could remain anonymous amongst the throngs of students. Dido took a step back and-
“Don’t tell me you’re gonna bail too, now,” came the girl’s voice, echoing slightly as it bounced around the lavatory walls. Dido looked back, sheepish, a flush of pink appearing at her cheeks and a small embarrassed smile replacing the uneasy one she had given Rosie. Miren continued, “Or was that sudden flow of courage just a spur-of-the-moment thing?” Dido blanched again, feeling thoroughly attacked and almost incentivised to leave, just to spite the girl. She opened her mouth to make one last, hopefully clever, retort before she stopped, mouth left agape.
Miren had sat down. On the floor. On the cold, hard, bathroom floor.
Dido frowned, a surge of something akin to pity washing over her and filling her with the urge to help, to comfort, to be a good person. Because that was what she was. A good person. As Miren mumbled something, in a voice seemingly indistinguishable from Dido’s own tone only a few days prior, Dido glanced around the entrance, making sure no one was soon to arrive before slowly walking towards Miren. On sheer nervous instinct combined with a want to defy the girl’s expectations, she wanted to say something, to prove her confidence, but, instead, she bit her tongue and remained quiet.
Was the Slytherin okay? Dido stood awkwardly a few feet from the girl, unsure of what exactly she had thought she was going to do when deciding not to follow Rosalyn. Faced with no other choice, Dido walked the final few steps towards Miren before she too sunk down to the ground, sitting against the wall with her knees up to her chest. Dido didn’t look at Miren or say anything to break the awkward silence that was taking over the bathroom.
Eventually though, she glanced at the girl before taking a small sniff of the air and chuckling quietly.
“I guess Rosie’s dye must have been strawberry scented or something.”
Dido paused again, almost holding her breath.
“So, why do you think people lie about some things?” she finally asked, staring straight ahead at the opposite, equally grey, wall before them, “If not just for money or- like- understandable things, that is.”
