New Friend
Rosalyn could hear the whispers around her as she walked through the courtyard. Even though she was a Gryffindor, she was quiet and never stood up for herself. Everyday she lived amongst weird stares and people talking behind her back. This was because Rosalyn was kind and quiet, so it was easier for them to pick on her than others.
As the talk of Rosalyn not having any friends or acquaintances started to get to her, she ran. She ended up in one of the far corners of the courtyard, hidden behind a large column. With mascara and tears streaming down her face, Rosalyn thought about standing up for herself, but she was afraid of what would happen. The other teens could jinx her or hurt her. Through being scared, she found a source of strength. She decided she would at least try to stand up for herself, even if it meant getting made fun of more.
Rosalyn slowly stood up, dusting herself off and wiping the mascara from under her eyes. She knew that she must look like a mess, but it was better to stand up for herself faster, so they would get the point. She wondered why people would say hurtful things about someone who had never hurt them. All she had been was kind to every single person in Hogwarts.
Rosalyn finally collected herself and walked over to a group of gossiping girls. The started to giggle as they saw the pained expression on her face. She thought about was she was going to say, and finally let it out.
“Why do you have to be so rude? I haven’t done anything to you?”
Rosalyn tried to stand strong, but her voice cracked in the middle of the first sentence. The group of girls decided to ignore Rosalyn’s comment and push her down in the mud, before walking away.

James made his way down the corridor, his school bag slung over his shoulder. He was on his way to the courtyard to meet a few of his friends and he couldn't help but be in a happy mood as he looked up at the bright cloudless sky. There had been alot of rain lately and James couldn't say that he prefered rain over sunny weather. He reached the courtyard and the warm air washed over him like a pleasant warm bath as he stepped outside. The courtyard looked as it did usually, although it was littered with puddles from the recent rain. As he scanned the courtyard for the people he was looking for, he couldn't help but notice that there seemed to be something going on between a group of girls in the corner of the courtyard. It seemed like there was trouble. James turned round to get a better look, but just at that moment, one of the girls shoved one of the other girls, into the mud. Outraged that anybody would do this to anyone, James stormed over to the group, ready to give them a piece of his mind. Unfortunately they had already walked out of sight, not noticing his approach and James made his way over to where the poor girl was still lying in the mud. He smiled sympathetically down at her,“Here” He offered his hand to her and helped her up, picking up her school bag and books for her. She turned to look at him, she was very pretty, with large blue sparkling eyes and long soft blonde hair. She looked at James with a pained expression on her face and he felt a wave of pity for her. A need to protect her. Smiling gently at her, he gathered up the rest of her things, taking her bag from her clutches and offering her his hand. “I'll carry these for you, don't worry.” He said, hoisting her bag onto his shoulder as well as his. “I'm James by the way. James Cadwell” He led her out of the courtyard, still holding her hand, and turned back to see her wearing a slightly shocked expression on her pretty features. “What's your name by the way?” He asked her gently. “Oh and also we are going to the hospital wing. I can't let you go to class like that but a few spells and medicine and you will feel much better, don't worry. Meanwhile, tell me what happened with those girls. Why did they push you?”

Rosalyn did not even notice a boy approaching her until he was a few feet away. As he gave a sympathetic smile and helped her up, all she could think about was the reason behind this act of kindness. She wondered why a boy that she never met would be so polite. Rosalyn took her first good look at the boy and saw that he had dark brown hair and a gorgeous mix of hazel and green in his eyes. His tanned skin was completely different than her pale complexion and he was at least four inches taller. As she snapped back into reality, she felt a stabbing pain in her left arm. Rosalyn looked at the boy with a painful expression and she saw him softly smile at her. As she reached down to pick up the rest of her stuff, she realized that he had done that already. When he grabbed the bag out of her outstretched arms, she gave him a confused look but didn’t say anything. Rosalyn took his hand to hold and slowly followed him out of the courtyard. As he told Rosalyn his name and told her that he was going to take her to the hospital wing, she finally understood that James was just a good person but was still a little shocked.
“Erm. I’m Rosalyn..”
She didn’t know if he could hear her or not with how quietly she was speaking, but she continued anyway.
“Thank you for the help, but the hospital wing isn’t necessary. I just have a slight pain in the arm.”
Rosalyn winced as she moved her arm, hoping to convince him that she was fine, and then continued to quietly talk.
“There’s no reason to worry about the girls, it happens all the time so I’m used to it.”
She said this with a faint smile as they arrived at the hospital wing doors.

“Erm. I’m Rosalyn..” She spoke quietly, but James could still hear her soft voice, he felt another stabbing pain of pity for the poor girl as he noted the forbearing pain the tone held. “Thank you for the help, but the hospital wing isn’t necessary. I just have a slight pain in the arm.” She tried to move it to convince him, but James wasn't deceived, she visibly winced as she attempted to move it around. She continued to speak softly, “There’s no reason to worry about the girls, it happens all the time so I’m used to it.” James blinked and started back at her in horror, “A-all the time?” He said weakly. Rosalyn just faintly smiled back at him. “No” He said more firmly, “We are going to the hospital wing, I don't want you hurt” He pushed open the doors, and pulled Rosalyn along with him, although she let him do so somewhat reluctantly. James didn't mention anything about going after the girls in front of Rosalyn yet, he didn't want to worry her. Walking up to the matron, he quietly explained the situation and then walked back over to Rosalyn, giving her a comforting smile and taking her hand gently “Don't worry about them," he whispered kindly, as the matron bustled around, looking for medicine and bandages. “They are just jealous that you are so kind and pretty” He said nothing more on the subject, and instead turned back just in time to see the matron approaching them. She took Rosalyns arm lightly and examined it, before taking her to one of the beds to sit down while she bandaged her up. James watched curiously as she mended the injury and instructed Rosalyn to drink the special potion. His mind wandered as he recalled the incident in the courtyard. Why had those girls pushed her? Why were they so horrible to her? Rosalyn seemed like such a kind,compassionate girl. What was there to hate? After the matron had left, James sat on the bed next to Rosalyn and watched her drink the potion, when she had finished he said “Are you sure you don't want me to go after those girls? I don't want them to hurt you again? Please tell me why they pushed you, I could help you better if I knew.” He looked at her quizzically waiting for her answer.

Rosalyn could hear the horror in James’ voice when he repeated that she had been hurt all of the time. She couldn’t hold it against him, it definitely was not his fault that the girls were awful to her. While James pulled Rosalyn into the hospital wing and explained the issue, she thought of all the hate from the girls that she would receive for this later. James seemed to Rosalyn as a sweet and comforting guy, he showed care for her in her weakest spots and it made her feel like she was worth something, plus he was pretty cute. James added on to his kindness by saying,
“They are just jealous that you are so kind and pretty”
Rosalyn’s mouth dropped open right there and she stared at the boy in shock. Her cheeks immediately went the color of cherries and she turned to the matron.
While the matron gently bandaged and tried to heal Rosalyn’s arm, she could feel James’ gaze. She carefully drank the potion, which tasted disgusting. Rosalyn had never tasted anything so bad in her life. When James decided to bring up the incident again, Rosalyn listened.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to go after those girls? I don’t want them to hurt you again. Please tell me why they pushed you, I could help you better if I knew.”
Rosalyn had been mostly quiet since their last full conversation, so she decided this was a good time to speak.
“I wouldn’t want to hurt the other girls, even though they’ve been awful. I honestly don’t know why they pick on me, it’s probably because I’m small and quiet, but I don’t understand how that gives them leverage over me.” She unconsciously bit her lip and looked down at her hands “Can I call you Jam?”

“I wouldn’t want to hurt the other girls, even though they’ve been awful. I honestly don’t know why they pick on me, it’s probably because I’m small and quiet, but I don’t understand how that gives them leverage over me.” James' features softened once more as he listened. He couldn't understand why anyone would pick on such a kind sweet girl. James wanted to confront them, but felt that if it was against Rosalyn's wishes then he wouldn't do it. He didn't want to make her life harder than it already was. She placed her hands timidly in her lap and said softly “Can I call you Jam?” His smile brightened and he placed his hand under her chin to tilt her head towards him. “Course you can! How about we be friends? Those girls won't hurt you when you are with me, I'll make sure of it” He stood up, and offered out a hand to help her, which she gladly took and left the hospital wing. “Its dinner soon” He said, turning to the gryffindor girl as they passed the entrance hall. “Hey why don't I introduce you to some of my other friends some time! They are really nice, im sure they would love to meet you!”

Rosalyn walked out of the hospital wing quietly, still lightly holding on to James’ hand. While passing the entrance hall, James broke the silence.
“It’s dinner soon. Hey, why don’t I introduce you to some of my other friends some time! They are really nice, I’m sure they would love to meet you!”
While Rosalyn was nervous to meet others, she felt as if James would keep her safe. He seemed so kind and she didn’t know how she deserved such an amazing new friend. She also didn’t feel like she would be hurt by the other girls while James was with her. He was like a Prince Charming.
“I don’t eat much dinner anyway, I usually sit outside on the courtyard and watch the sunset. You can head to dinner if you’d like, but you’re also welcome to come with me.”
Rosalyn felt vulnerable as she spoke. She immediately raised her hand to her mouth after the words left it. Rosalyn did not know why she decided to share where she spends most of her time, but realized that it was probably because she trusts the boy.
They finally stopped in front of the Great Hall and Rosalyn looked at James questionably.

“I don’t eat much dinner anyway, I usually sit outside on the courtyard and watch the sunset. You can head to dinner if you’d like, but you’re also welcome to come with me.” James noticed that she immediately clapped her hand to her mouth after saying these words, as though afraid she had revealed too much. The Hufflepuff boy was bewildered for a few moments. Did she always skip dinner? Didn't she get hungry? He shook these thoughts from his mind and turned his gaze back to the blue eyed girl. He felt intrigued by her, she was something else, special, yet James couldn't pin a finger on it just yet…
They stopped outside the great hall and Rosalyn looked at James questionably. His eyes brightened and he said, maybe a little too quickly, “Of course I'll come! It sounds awesome!” His enthusiastic demeanor was infectious and he noticed her face light up considerably as she smiled up at him in response, but he had something else to ask her, “By the way Rosalyn,” As he said her name, a soft smile formed on his lips, “Do you have a nickname of any sort, you know that your friends would call you?” He had so many questions to ask her once they were out in the peaceful atmosphere of the Hogwarts grounds, yet he asked this first. He wanted to become more familiar with the shy girl, he felt as though he could trust her.

Rosalyn’s face brightened like a shining star when James immediately agreed to skip dinner and watch the sunset with her. The little smile forming on her lips was lifted even more when James asked about Rosalyn’s nickname. Not many people held interest in getting to know the girl, as she was quiet and not the most popular.
“My friends and family back home call me Rosa. You can too if you’d like.”
Rosalyn missed her parents, but was glad that she was getting the best education that she could. Hogwarts amazed her and she loved almost everything about the castle. Rosalyn unconsciously grabbed James’ hand and slowly started walking back down to the courtyard, before abruptly stopping and turning to the boy.
“Are you entirely sure that you want to come? I would get it if you wanted to eat dinner with your friends and classmates.”
Rosalyn sincerely hoped that James would still decide to watch the sunset with her, but she did not want to stop him from eating. Of course they could bring food down to the courtyard, like a picnic, but Rosalyn did not think of that in the moment. Tucking her hair behind her ear, with the hand that wasn’t holding James’, she shyly looked up at him for an answer.
