The Red Queen's Labyrinth
ROUND 2 MOD POST
(Group 4)
Group 4 seemed to be on a roll! Unphased by the borderline irritating blabbers of the energetic gnomes, Estella Cain, a playful prankster at heart, seemed to fit right into the environment, with her glee at their success evident. Upon reaching the end of the first obstacle, they were quick to get to business, though not without some playful flirtations of Verona Andréas, the only boy of the group who lightened the mood. Aly Salinger, Mira Hawkins, and Ebony Vetra were quick to decipher the message of the riddle despite the seemingly nonsensical stanzas in between. With the dizzying smell of roses in the air and a determination to advance quickly, Aly Salinger took the lead as the eldest student of the group and went to cast Reducio, with Ebony Vetra serving as her backup.
Upon Aly Salinger's successful casting of Reducio, the golden key shrinks up, a glistening shine covering the key as it becomes just the right size. With the newly shrunken key, the players would find it a perfect fit into the door’s keyhole! The lock seemed to glow and hum, as if in approval at the players' success. Twisting the key, players would hear a click. In the blink of an eye, light glowed from the door as the material chipped away into dust, revealing a now-empty doorway.
Moderator's Notes
Aly Salinger casts Reducio (WDC 12).

Obstacle 3
Stepping past this doorway, players would be faced with an opulent yard fit for a queen. In the centre of it was a huge, luxurious pool made of shiny marble and adorned with ruby gemstone statues. The water was a brilliant, shimmering teal in the pool, quite unlike regular water, and under the sunlight, the sight was almost blinding.
The pool would have been perfect for a summer party– If not for what seemed to be a death machine in the middle of it. A flat path of emerald grass connected one end of the pool to the other, and hanging atop it was what seemed to be an axe. Back and forth the axe swung over the centre of the path, blocking the path to the next obstacle! Thankfully, if any players squinted, they would realise the axe is almost akin to a soft pillow version of the real deal.
Tighten those shoelaces and watch your step, challengers! You're going to have to make a mad dash.

The shimmering key of gold shrank easily in her palm, and Aly sent a silent thank-you to the past version of herself that had decided to study the Shrinking Charm a little extra in preparation for her upcoming N.E.W.T.s. (Second-year charms were liable to fading in one's mind by the time you reached nearly eighteen!) The unlocking item now fit perfectly in the tiny lock, and Aly breathed a sigh of relief as it twisted with a slight glow and audible hum that seemed to be asserting their decision as correct. Waving her teammates forward, she led her gaggle deeper into the labyrinth.
Unfortunately, what awaited them was no riddle nor anything that could be solved with a charm. The path passing over the idyllic pool seemed to be blocked by a giant, swinging axe, though upon closer inspection, it didn't look very dangerous - just the sort of thing that would push an unsuspecting teammate into the waters, rather than slice them to bits.
She announced this to her teammates, pointing out the way the axe seemed to hang in midair for a moment whenever it reached its peak. "See there, that half-second when it's not swinging over the path, that's when we'll have to dodge through," she explained, giving the water a wry smile; though Aly was capable of swimming, she doubted that a dip in the crystal-clear pond was exactly what the makers of this twisty game had in mind. "I bet we're not allowed to swim across, either, seeing as how that axe'll likely just shove us in rather than chop us up. I'd bet my last Cauldron Cake that getting wet means disqualification."
No choice but to run, then, and as the eldest, Aly felt as though she would need to do the darting first, so that her younger peers - goslings, really - would see that the thing was doable. Alternatively, she'd get knocked into the water and that would be the end of her, at least for this morning; the hopeful queen-to-be would spend the rest of her afternoon trying to dry her bedazzled suit in time for the ball this evening. With the threat of a wasted day and dozens of Hot Air Charms looming over her, Aly took a deep breath. "I'll go first," she volunteered, bravely, and then the seventh-year did her best to run across the strip of lawn and dodge the mighty blow of the falling axe.
If she made it across, Aly would turn, grin, and wave to the team she'd left behind. "Nothing to it," she would say, slightly out of breath, before trying to coach the rest of her mates through it, trying to offer a boost to their bravery whilst suggesting when and where to step.

The Red Queen's Labyrinth
With a flash, the spell casted by Aly Sallinger, the eldest girl in the team successfully shrinks the key. Mira holds her breath as the key successfully fits into the keyhold, revealing the path to the next obstacle. 'Wow!' she excalims. Will I be as confident while casting the spell as Aly is when I turn seventh year? Mira wonders as she follows the girl through the doorway.
Mira gasps when she sees where the doorway leads them. In front of them is a big royal yard, with a gorgeous pool in the middle. The yard is even more beautiful than the third path in the first obstacle, which later proves to be a trap. The sweeter, the deadlier. The saying pops into Mira's mind. And she is right indeed.
Hanging between them and the pool is a huge axe, dangling to stop their way. Mira is a little scared. Do they have to go forward with the axe in their way? She examines the yard closely, but finds no other way around. It seems that they have no other choice but to run, for their lives.
Mira has other concerns. What if the axe is enchanted and suddenly attacks her when she is passing? She notices that the axe seem not to be made of steel or iron, though her guesses are not to be completely trusted at the moment. As she is thinking, Aly dashes towards the pool in a fast speed. Mira picks up courage-- after all, she is quite a fast runner too. Rechecking her shoelaces, she walks to one side of the yard, since the axe would be higher and slower at the sides, takes a deep breath, picks the right moment, and runs at her top speed.

| _ | The glow radiated from the shrunken key was almost angelic. It was perhaps a reflection of how perfectly the charm was cast — and for that, Ebony commended her senior. Though Aly was a stellar Seeker and Quidditch player, her spellcasting skills were clearly not to be underestimated either. The subsequent hum that emitted from the lock upon placing the key within it was, similarly, harmoniously heavenly. There was something rather fantastical about the phenomena, even amongst the magical world that all at Hogwarts were accustomed to. It was the whimsy of the labyrinth. The dreamlike atmosphere perpetuated as the door disintegrated into dust to reveal a doorway. The Ravenclaw wondered what enchantment was utilised to achieve such an effect, for it certainly was not covered in the Charms OWL syllabus — not that she knew of, anyway. For that, it was imperative that props were handed out to the ball planning committee. They sure did a great job at constructing a fantastical wonderland. Upon entry of the doorway, a yard with a pool coloured a bright shade of azure presented itself before Ebony and her fellow adventurers. Everything, from the radiant scarlet statues to the glimmer of the water surface, was so absurdly oversaturated. So vibrant, and what for? Perhaps it was intended to provide strain upon the eyes as to deliberately displace any challengers. The strange clash between cobalt and ruby presented a feel akin to a vomit of colour, an amalgamation of sloppy, overly exuberant hues. The shades were void of coherence, and the artist within her was screaming. Has colour theory been thrown out the window? The mismatched colours were horrifying to the extent that the girl almost failed to notice the gargantuan axe situated at the center. Upon closer examination, however, it became evident that the axe was simply a fake, a lousy imitation of the violent tool. “It certainly would have been more interesting should the axe have been real,” she expressed aloud to nobody in particular. The notion of simply wading through what appeared to be a rather shallow pool did occur to Ebony, though it was quickly put off by Aly’s comment on how getting wet would result in disqualification. Though she didn’t mind going for a quick dip at all, the repulsive vibrance of the pool — combined with a desire to avoid disqualification and progress — allowed her to conclude that the best solution was to go for a mad dash to the opposite side. Besides, a swim in the rare fancy attire, especially given the ball that she still (reluctantly) had to attend later in the night, wasn’t so appealing. Following Aly’s lead, with a deep inhale and a grab of the hand, the brunette moved her legs at the fastest speed to her ability in an attempt to evade the slashes of the pillow axe. |

(Group 4)ROUND 3 MOD POST

✥─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────✥Bravery was not what was lacking in the challengers today. However, the intimidating sight of the glinting axe sweeping across the path might have shaken some of them. Perhaps it was the timing or perhaps it was just luck, no one could really know for sure but what they could know was that two of our three did not indeed make it through the axe. But what a tricky obstacle indeed!
Aly tried to dodge the rapid sweeps of the axe, but with one misstep, Mira found themselves sent flying by the axe’s soft yet heavy weight of it crashing into them! A spin they went, before they plopped into the cooling, shimmering pool surrounding the obstacle. Oof! Looks like they will have a long embarrassing swim out of the water. It seems Ebony is the only one who made it through to the next obstacle, perhaps she can cheer her team on and embark some wisdom onto them as to how she got across so easily.
Next to the ladder out of the pool, players would find a stack of fluffy white towels prepared for them to dry off. And good thing too! Players don't need to be cold and wet as well as dealing with their loss.
This maze really seems to be putting many of our poor players through the worst things. Now group four is getting in on that action. Players who did not pass must attempt the obstacle again.
Good luck!

Aly was far too overconfident in her ability to tiptoe quickly across the small path that bridged the pool, clearly, for the axe caught her squarely in the side, sending her tumbling into the crystal-clear water below. Unfortunately, another one of her groupmates - the younger girl with the flattened American accent - was also swept in after her, and Aly had to swim quickly to the side to avoid a mid-water crash. Once the younger girl (Mira) surfaced, Aly threw her a grin, using one wet hand to comb her soaking curls away from her freckled face. This is what I get for wearing my hair down, she bemoaned internally before motioning for the other girl to follow her. "Here, I spotted a ladder this way," she said, offering her arm to Mira in case she didn't know how to swim. "Let's try that again, shall we? Pity there's no ladder on the side we're trying to get to..."
Once she was out, and if Mira followed, Aly would pull her wand from the inside of her dripping wet suit jacket and turn its tip on her soaked clothing. This suit was far too bedazzled, far too fancy, and far too expensive to allow it to mold or mildew before the ball this evening. "Aer Calidus," she intoned solemnly, (hopefully) letting herself dry off before (hopefully) turning the same spell unto Mira (if she accepts it).
An optimistically dry Ravenclaw seventh-year would then take another run at the narrow strip of green that crossed the pool, waving forward her other teammates as she did so. "Come on! Ebony made it across, so the rest of us can, too," she encouraged. "We can't go anywhere until we're all on that other side..."

| _ | The thrum of footsteps — those of herself and her teammates — that resonated across the grassy ground were the only sound that Ebony could hear as she sped across the field, the soft pillow axe moving somewhat comically above. It seemed as though her blind timing had worked out quite well, for she had successfully streamed past the axe towards the other side of the field. In the process of charging across, she had neglected to check on any of her teammates, for she had placed the utmost focus on her own effort in sprinting; she didn't dare take the slightest look over her shoulder in fear that the axe — no matter how soft it was — would descend to whisk her into the water. Now looking backward upon reaching relative safety, she turned around to find Aly and the foreign girl — the soft-spoken one from Ilvermorny — swept into the pool. Ronnie and the Gryffindor first-year remained on the other side, and it seemed as though they hadn't even attempted to make the sprint. The brunette could only shudder as she imagined the discomfort of wet fabric clinging to the body; it was a discomfort that towels did not resolve, and her Hot Air Charm was definitely out of practice. Thus, she was quite relieved that she had not been forced to take a swim. Perhaps she could now make herself useful. The fifth-year being of any use was a rare sight, for she was riddled with incompetence, whether it be in Quidditch or spellcasting. She would try, nevertheless, to cast the Slowing Charm as to facilitate her teammates' evasive attempts. "Arresto Momentum," she enunciated, directing the charm towards the moving axe to hopefully slightly slow it down for ease of sprinting. She imagined that having the axe slowed might perhaps wound her teammates' pride and dignity, but pride and dignity could be forgone in such dire situations (situations in which they had a labyrinth to complete). She motioned to her teammates to commence their dash. "Get over here, I believe in you all!" she encouraged with uncharacteristic enthusiasm. |

❝ YOU SEARCH THE WORLD FOR SOMETHING ELSE TO MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE WHAT WE HAD—
𝕳er thoughts stuttered. The beauty of it almost made her eyes skip over the looming axe, almost. They stepped towards an ornate yard, gleaming with a crystalline pool and axe. "Well, that is mildly concerning.", she murmured to no audience. Dazed, she eyed the hypnotic movements — swinging, swinging, swinging — and chastised herself for just standing there.
Admittedly, when she signed up for an event like this, she expected some illusory tricks or whatever the mazes did. An act based on her fickle whims, nevertheless, she appreciated her past self decisions. How else could she partake in such adventures? She tried to see whether if the axe had a specific pattern but the more she stared, the more uneasy she became. She decided spontaneity was perhaps the better choice and that she would deal with whatever came her way. But it was bound to be harmless, and she sighed. The major issue she could think of was getting drenched in the water, and soaking her gown was admittedly no fun. Nothing a few drying charms couldn't fix, she supposed. Her main focus centered on simply having fun, and if her dress was the price, she'd accept it gladly. Besides, it was a dull blue–
She didn't mean to dwell on it for so long, because when she was anchored back to the labyrinth, she found her teammates already sprinting. What gryffindor was she? She stretched her hands, eyes gleaming with anticipation, preparing for the sprint ahead. She couldn't fall behind now, for her house's sake at least. She registered somewhere in her adrenaline-filled thoughts that Ebony cast a slowing charm, —if she made it out there, she promised herself to thank her senior for the support — that Aly and Mira were met with waves, but she cleared her mind to a single thought, run.
—AND IN WONDERLAND, WE BOTH WENT MAD. ❞

The Red Queen's Labyrinth
GROUP 4 MOD POST

✥─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────✥Back and forth the axe swung over the grassy path across the pool it almost seemed to tease and taunt the players as they didn't make it across. The axe made a terrifying whooshing sound with each of its heavy swings. That sound too seemed as though it was taunting the players. The axe glinted under the glow of sunshine, as if truly made of metal, and its weight made intimidating swishing noises in the air. Yet, such a frightening display did nothing to deter our brave challengers of the wonderful Group four!
Thanks to the valiant efforts of Ebony casting the Arresto momentum spell all of the members of the group were now able to get across. The spell caused the axe to freeze in the air mod swing and created a perfectly clear path for the players to get across.
One by one, the challengers charged forward with all their might, skillfully weaving past the axe that threatened to knock them into the pool. Keen senses predicted the axe’s movements, and before they knew it, all of them successfully made it to the other side!
Players have a moment to catch their breath before moving into the final obstacle.
Mod note:
Aly Salinger: d20+14=20 Success
Estella Cain: d20+4= 17 Success
Ebony Vetra: Arresto momentum: d20+9= 23 Success!
Obstacle 4: Door after Door after Door
OOC INFORMATIONIt seemed as if the swinging axe had just been the start of many trials to infiltrate the Red Queen’s Palace. Past perfectly-trimmed hedges and grand, pointed trefoil arches made by marble, the challengers would find their polished pebble path leading to a huge gatehouse. SHKK. If they looked up at the walls, they would see a stack of human-sized cards dishing themselves apart in the blink of an eye. The card soldiers stared down from above, watching them with oddly-curved spears in their hands.
“Intruders!”
“Have they come to overthrow the Queen?”
“LOWER THE GATE!”
A heavy, wooden portcullis reinforced with heavy steel bounced up from the ground like a meerkat from its burrow before the challengers could attempt, wobbling before hardened into a formidable barrier blocking their path. 5 hearts glowed on the portcullis, shimmering with vitality.
Without a ladder or rope to scale the wall, there seemed to be only one way through: You’re gonna have to knock this gate DOWN!!
For those with strong magical power, fish out your wands and cast your strongest offensive spells to weaken the gate! For the fit and strong, a good throw could do more than a wand! At the foot of the gatehouse, pebbles and rocks of strange shapes laid in a pile from the Red Queen’s last path renovation. Convenient, huh?

Before Aly could so much as blink, Ebony had skillfully frozen the swinging axe in midair, and the seventh-year smacked her palm directly into the centre of her forehead. Bloody hell. She called out to her teammate as she crossed, "That was brilliant! It didn't even cross my mind."
Everyone was able to follow her, and she gave Ebony a playful and proud pat on the shoulder before they all moved into the next area together, which seemed to be a gate entrance into a palace. Naturally, the castle had security (leaving Aly to again wonder why Hogwarts didn't have any protectors outside of the professors, considering how many insane things had happened since her first year here); luckily, the card soldiers didn't actually seem to be attacking, but more so just trying to stop them from getting in.
Naturally, the seventh-year muttered to her teammates, "We're going to have to get in. Follow my lead - and, look, if you've got a strong throwing arm, there's some stones there. But I'm going to cast..."
A mental scroll through her known spells provided several options, but Aly knew that there was one in particular that would knock this thing down in no time. She leveled her wand at the gate.
"Confringo!"
