"How many times do I have to say?"
Valour practically threw their trunk through the door once they reached the dainty little hut they were staying in. They had never heard of a yurt before, but once stepping inside of the cylindrical structure, they certainly weren’t complaining. The interior was a serene silvery oasis compared to the icy landscape of Russia. It was almost as though the stars outside of this yurt were from an entirely different night sky. Warmer and secluded. Exactly what Valour wanted before the competition really commenced.
They gave their trunk another unceremonious kick before stripping off their winter layers. Though there were various empty bunks, Valour had assumed they had the luxury of having one to themself. After all, everyone else seemed to ballot together in groups while they had entered alone and without consenting to random allocation. With this sweet, sweet thought in mind, they threw their coat to the bunk on their left, tossed their scarf god knows where and made themself nice and comfortable in the nearest bed. Perhaps with all their travels and motion-sickness, they could finally rest.
See, Valour had been awake for a little over 48 hours. In other words, far too long. This aversion to rest had crept up on them ever since the Christmas break, in little doses. It began with harmless restlessness and an inability to sit still. Their mind was simply alive with ideas and plots that would never quieten down until the small hours of the morning. It was not long until the nightmares began. Epileptic and confused, blinding lights and darkened figures stalked the halls of her brain at night. The thought of closing their eyes to the horrors beyond was unbearable some days. They chalked it up to stress. The mounting pressure of the Magical Olympics and creeping paranoia. They could only pray this malignance would not bleed into reality and affect their performance. She needed this. It was an opportunity to dispel any appearances of weakness. Any lingering whispers about her injury the previous year. It all started flooding back to her, the taste of blood, the searing pain in her ankle…
Before Valour found themself lost to sleep, their thoughts were interrupted by the door of their yurt swinging open. A figure stood in the doorway, cast in the shadow of moonlight behind them. Valour shielded their eyes from the light, pupils contracting with a grimace. They managed a rasp. "Who are you?"

| _ | It's late when Samantha eventually arrives at the yurt she was assigned to. She had seen the sign-up list and saw her name written right next to Valour Argentum. She had seen them around in class and the corridors, but the two of them hadn't engaged in any conversation so far. The fact didn't bother Samantha much as she was simply glad that she wasn't sharing a tent with more than one person. Her suitcase landed with a soft thud in the snow as she halted in front of the door of their yurt. Any social interaction was an obstacle for young Samantha, she'd rather puke slugs for a full week than have to introduce herself and make small talk with someone new. She sincerely hoped she left most of that behind in the first few weeks of this year, but alas. After taking another deep breath, she pushed the heavy door open and carried her suitcase inside. Closing the door behind her, she moved to take off her burgundy scarf. Samantha's eyes squinted as she tried to make out Valour in the almost non existent light emitted by the stars from their window. No candles were lit and there weren't any lamps brightening up the space, so Samantha assumed she might have woken up Valour from their slumber. "Oh. Sorry if I woke you," she speaks softly as she moves her suitcase to the bed on the right side of the yurt. "I'm Samantha. Well, Sam actually," the girl frowns as she introduces herself. Hadn't Valour looked at the pairings sheet? "You're Valour, right?" She asked, slightly unsure, while adjusting the blue collar of the blouse peeking out from underneath her red sweater. Maybe she had read the form wrong somehow. She sincerely hoped she hadn't though. Not just for the luck of having only a single roommate, but also because of how exquisite the yurt looks. She longed of pulling the blankets all the way up to her chin after this long day and staring out the window, watching the twinkling stars shift across the night sky. They almost seemed even more magical from inside the yurt than outside. She quietly shuffled a bit closer to her bed, but didn't dare to sit down yet in case she needed to relocate after all. Her limbs felt heavy and her eyes almost started to droop as her right leg made contact with the side of the bed. "I thought we were paired together. At least, that's what the form says," she shrugs, her eyes presumably meeting Valour's, but it was rather hard to tell in the dark. |

"How many times do I have to say?"
From the blinding light seeping in through the door, stepped an angelic creature. Soft-spoken and gentle-mannered, her disposition was quite refreshing. She apologised for intruding, explaining that they had been assigned as roommates. Valour made little effort to conceal the disappointment on her face. There goes my silent oasis. Though, her new company did not seem at all like the type to get on Valour’s nerves. She surprisingly appreciated the witch’s subtle nature; Valour did not usually take a liking to introverted people. They were difficult to pry open and coax interesting conversation out of, rendering her utterly bored to a point of desperation. Thankfully at this moment all Valour wanted was a quiet reprieve with someone that appreciated the silence just as much.
“You didn’t wake me. Don’t worry. My mistake, not yours - I thought this place was all for myself…” She shifted around the bed, yawning and stretching her arms out. They wagered they looked rather terrible, caught off guard. Their eyebags had eyebags at this point and she hadn’t even changed out of her clothes before laying in bed.
She surveyed the girl in her smart attire. She’d seen her around; Valour seldom forgot a face. They gave a simple nod as she asked her name.
“Sam Jones, no? I think we have Charms together.” She paused for a moment, wondering what had been significant about the girl. Ah yes. She was competition. Valour hardly cared, not strictly from good sportsmanship or even over confidence. She was there for her own personal satisfaction, and if that came with a nice shiny medal, they would hardly be complaining. Meeting her opponents would be an interesting opportunity. Perhaps on any other day, Valour would enjoy sneaking into their heads with some somewhat-friendly banter. Today, she was very content to simply wish the girl well.
“We’re in the same category, you know. I hope that won’t make things awkward.” She rolled over so that she was lying on her back, her head dangling off the edge of the bed and looking up at Sam with an upside-down smile, slightly dopey and half-asleep. “So... Do you think you’ll take home gold?” It was a sly question to ask, sure, but at least an interesting one. Why join a competition you didn’t think you could win?
