Groups were being assigned for potions. That's the only thing that can explain me right now. You see, the thing about potions is that whenever I think potions, I think Slytherin. Most likely because we have double potions with them but whatever. Some Slytherins were...How do I word this bearable. Some were...Careless in ways. I hoped, wished, PRAYED that I would get put with a fellow Ravenclaw or Angel, or Dido, but I got placed with a girl that I had JUST learned the name of, that was only because the teacher paired us together. Her name is Delilah Morrigan. She had soft brown curls and was the exact same height as me. Down to the centimeter. Ok so she SEEMS nice. But is SHE nice. I looked at her and held my book tighter. I walked over to the table and flipped to the textbook page, I had it bookmarked. "Well since we're working together.. We need an intro. My name is Tina Carille, and I may be a bit of a perfectionist at times. How are you?" I asked, steady, slightly bubbly. I smiled warmly at her too. I found that smiling warmly at people makes them trust you more. I studied the text book. Today we were making a Bruise Removal Paste and a Burn Healing Paste. Alot to get done in one lesson but that was ok with me. 3 Murtlap Tentacles, 1 Jar of Honey, 2 Measures of Bubotuber Pus, 6 Seashells, 2 Measures of Flobberworm Mucus. I went to get the ingredients. When I returned Delilah had something to say.

Delilah had been mid-way through reading the assigned page when the Ravenclaw arrived, already two steps ahead in her head. Beginning with Bruise Removal Paste, since Bubotuber Pus needed time to reach the necessary consistency. As far as Delilah understood, it was a detail that many students in the classroom were yet to consider. She didn't look up from her notes when the girl approached the table but finished the sentence she was writing down before casting her gaze upwards.

The student, identified by the name of Tina Carille, was smiling. The smile was friendly and deliberate. Delilah recognized right away, and she catalogued this information away in the back of her head. It wasn't because it seemed forced, but just the way it felt to see it: people wearing such smiles seemed to perfectly understand what effect it might produce on other people.

A perfectionist, she had announced to Delilah as soon as she could. Delilah did not change her expression.

"Fine."

Saying that much had been sufficient in the current context. Then, Tina turned back to whatever she was doing in silence. But there was something brewing in Delilah.

The notion of the student being a perfectionist had been introduced right away. Why was she saying that? Did Tina have to warn her? Was it just a tactful approach, and a peculiar one for Ravenclaws? Or was there some specific meaning Delilah did not know? She knew some perfectionists herself: her father and her elder sister both had high standards. Those who openly described themselves as perfectionists usually had two reasons for saying that: they felt anxious about maintaining these standards, or they wanted people to realize that someone watching them was aware of even slightest mistakes, or maybe both reasons combined.

She watched Tina leave to fetch the ingredients in her peripheral vision. She had noticed the bookmarked page Tina brought with her: deliberate and prepared. Tina apparently had read the plan for the lesson in advance, so she was a perfectionist not just in her nature but also in her habits. Delilah's notes were carefully written and referenced overnight before the lesson, but she did not tell anyone about it. It just was there.

When Tina returned with the ingredients, Delilah scanned them without making her intention obvious. To first glance it seemed everything was there. Drawing the ingredients nearer to herself, Delilah started putting them in order in accordance with the instructions. Working in silent orderliness, she left all other matters untouched, as she was always a few steps ahead of everyone.

"Also a little friendly advice" She paused double checking the quantity of the ingredients. Delilah turned towards Tina with a straight face. "Don't start introductions with saying you're a perfectionist. No one really cares and it can make some people think you're stuck up or that you think they're incapable...or stupid to put it simply."

She paused again debating whether to keep going. Softly shaking her head she dismissed the thought deciding to spare the poor girl a lecture. They needed to start on the potions if they wanted to have both done before class was over.

That lingering smile that Tina wore remained in her mind, as if flipping a coin and trying to see all its sides at once. It was both friendly and strategic, both practiced and warm.

It was not distrust that made Delilah hesitate, but an absence of trust. She did not want to believe things said in performances. She would monitor and evaluate as she went along.

Delilah scribbled a short note in the margin of her notes before closing the cover.

She said something about not mentioning that your a perfectionist. I bit my lip and kept my eyes on the potion. I couldn't let her distract me. I mean, obviously she would rather be caught off guard at me lashing out at her rather than me. I saw her gaze drift to the ingredients I got. I knew she was counting if I had gotten enough. I got each of us two sets of ingredients. Just in case we mess up. If I do I will literally go cry. I just started to add ingredients. I started with the Bruise Removal Paste. I looked at my notes. Cutely highlighted and little notes to myself scribbled in the margin about how to make sure that this succeeded. I turned the caldron onto the median heat. And watched as it heated up just 10 minutes. I looked up at Delilah. She was at the same place as me. I needed to prove I was better than a pure blood. Or whatever she was. She looked like she thought she owned the place. But I had to remind myself not to make accusations. You don't have to go faster than her. You have to make the potion BETTER then her. I thought to myself. I looked back over at Delilah and she looked at me. For a moment we shared the same thought.
