𝕴t was after class and Cassiel emerged from the History of Magic with a look of disinterested malaise displayed plainly on his face. This week had proven to be a fairly rotten one, what with the post-holiday workload coming as an unwelcome shock after weeks spent loafing about. In the earliest days of their holiday, Cassiel had attempted to remain in top academic shape, but even he'd inevitably relapsed, successfully beguiled by the siren song of holiday-induced indolence. He reaps the reward for his laziness now; just an hour of History and his brain was already reduced to a jellied mush.

Blessedly, classes were over for today, so his lagging brain wasn't subject to anymore lectures that would leave him with a pulsing headache. History of Magic was not a favorite class of his, so truly the only thing he found worthy of note during that particular class was a snide comment a Slytherin muttered under his breath when the professor mentioned how, during Hogwarts' inception, Salazar Slytherin did not want Muggle-borns attending the school.

"Was he wrong?"

Though not very clever nor original, Cassiel snickered along with a few other Slytherins.

As he descended the stairs leading to the courtyard, he found himself stepping into a bustling space. Other students who were finished with their classes were now milling about with their friends. Cassiel, however, had duller plans in mind. He wanted nothing more than to decompress by the lake before getting a head start on his homework. He'd mistakenly allowed himself to become idle during Christmas break, and now he was sure part of his brain was now suffering from dystrophy.

Keen to escape the crowd, he hurried through the throng, only to have his shoulder bump against that of another student. A Slytherin, and not just any, but one he had just shared a History of Magic class with. With little more than a fleeting glance and a half-hearted "excuse me" directed her way, he took a step to her right in an effort to move around her.

ooc: I absolutely love your writing btw! The elegance is definitely on theme lmao

Cassandra grunted, stumbling and taking a step back slightly. She glared at the perpetrator, who was no other than-

Ugh, this guy.

She huffed, hauling up and gripping the strap of her bag. Throughout the first semester, Cassie had only disliked two types of people; Snobby Slytherins and their snake-kin. Cassiel was a perfect example of the latter. Do not let the name of an angel fool you, this man would've deserved the pitchforks and torches from the 16th century. He was getting on her nerves today especially, because right in the center of his earlier conversation was her, attempting to get her work done.

Idle snickers were nothing new, there was a group in every class and were usually easy to ignore when needed. She'd even join in sometimes. No, it was not the chatter that had drawn her attention, nor the constant buzz in her ear like a pesky mosquito. It had been the topic of their conversation, something that had boiled her to her core.

She turned around, directing her words towards him. "Are you capable of keeping anything to yourself? Or does not watching where you're going come with your snake tongue?"

The words came out of her mouth before she could think about it. How she was able to come up with that on the spot was absolutely beyond her, but she found herself unable to take it back. She should've walked away, should've turned back and tried to pretend she hadn't said anything.

But she knew he had heard her. She could tell. So she crossed her arms, preparing to hold her ground.

The Courtyard was slowly clearing out due to the biting wind blowing past the walls. Temperatures had dropped in the winter season, and Cassie considered the gray sky to be the perfect backdrop for her current mood.

"But magic is neither good nor evil. It is a tool, like a knife. Is a knife evil? Only if the wielder is evil."

Cassiel was not unfamiliar with a scathing look of disdain. He was, after all, a little brother. So when he unintentionally shoulder checked Cassandra Tarot and she responded by leveling him with a withering stare and barbed words, he only shrugged flippantly. Her ire, though so thick it was nearly palpable, was met with only discourteous indifference. He had lessons and homework and upcoming end-of-year exams to worry about; he didn't have the bandwidth to pay Cassandra and her poor temper any mind.

The use of a snake-like descriptor as an insult from a Slytherin was odd. Even stranger, Cassiel didn't take the slight as an insult at all. She claimed he had a snake's tongue, but she couldn't be more wrong. It was the tufted tail and thick mane of a lion that he possessed, not the forked tongue of a serpent. Though he'd stopped pouting over his unfortunate sorting, he still yearned to be draped in green and silver in the same way the Ahlstroms that preceded him once did.

Cassandra's existence, like that of other muggle-born and half-blood Slytherins, was salt in a wound Cassiel was still nursing. The fact that she'd gotten into the house he'd desperately wanted to be sorted into while he did not was more vexing than the insult she'd hurled his way.

"I'm plenty capable. There are at least ten nasty things I could call you right now, but I'm choosing not to." His voice was low, purposefully quiet so that any bystanders would have a hard time discerning what he was saying. "Nice of me, right? Unless you'd like to hear some, of course."

It was all posturing on his part. The insults Cassiel had in his arsenal were those learned at family gathers, ugly words exchanged between pure-bloods whose values leaned old-fashioned rather than progressive. He could never say them, lest he run the risk of being heard and punished by the school. Though many pure-blooded families were candid about their view of muggles and muggle-borns, the Ahlstroms possessed more subtlety.
