Max woke up that morning like usual. He was awake long before they were allowed to leave the common room. He had a feeling winter was about to show its face, and he simply had to get outside and smell the air. It would probably not make sense to many others, but to Max it was essential. Five minutes before he was allowed, he crawled through the portrait and skipped his way down the stairs. At least he had enough sense to bring his bag with him.

He made it down to the ground floor, and walked past the great hall. Who had time for breakfast when it was the last day of autumn? Not him, that was for sure. Slipping out of the large doors he breathed deep. He really should have brought his broom, it was the perfect weather for a flight. But then he would have nowhere to store it during lessons. So it was probably better that he didn’t. He spent the morning out there, running around, climbing a tree, and generally enjoying himself. He did so for long enough that when he checked the time, he had to run, or he would be late.

Inside, and up the stairs he ran. By the time he reached the third floor, he was breathing hard. Thankfully he seemed to still have plenty of time, as classmates still trickled into the classroom. He ran a hand through his hair as he entered. By the both large and small objects that were placed around the room, it was not hard to guess what they would be working on. The older Gryffindors had told him that refining the levitation charm was important. Precision and accuracy were key to success, no matter the object one were to levitate.

He tried to get his breathing under control as he crossed the room. There were a couple of desks off to the side that were yet to be occupied. He breathed a sigh of relief. He liked this class, as well as Professor Townsend. He always put in an effort, and for that he needed to focus on his work. He never could when he sat in the middle of the room. He placed his bag on the desk and found his seat. Not bothering to bring out writing equipment, he instead twirled his wand around and let his gaze wander.

Autumn was finally on the horizon; after a summer that had seemed to drag on forever, Eira was at last glad to be entering a cooler season.

Admittedly, she didn’t have a constitution that was particularly resistant to viruses, nor did she cope well with the cold, yet she found a certain comfort in the lower temperatures.

That morning, once again, she had got ready quickly, styling her hair as usual and leaving her long, jet-black locks, which fell to her chest, loose. She had put on her uniform, though she left a few strands hanging over her eyes, for although she found them beautiful, they were, above all, very sensitive to all kinds of light.

Once ready, the young girl went down to the Great Hall to have her breakfast; this never changed, no matter how many days passed. She had her usual tea and always ate her morning toast.

When she had finished, she took the time to pop back to her dormitory to collect her things and make her way to the Charms classroom; then, after greeting the teacher, she settled down at one of the available tables.

There was hardly anyone there yet, and the young girl allowed herself a moment to catch her breath. She had worked hard since the start of term, not allowing herself any slip-ups or poor marks; her parents still hadn’t sent her any owls, but she wasn’t expecting anything.

Despite everything, her heart ached at the realisation that she really didn’t matter to her parents. She had still hoped to receive even just a single message, but to no avail.

She snapped out of her thoughts when she heard the teacher’s voice begin the lesson. She took out her things, and her wand at the same time, but was interrupted by the presence of the person beside her.

She looked away, searching for the person who had disturbed her, and saw someone she already knew; she sighed, already weary of the session that was about to unfold beside her.

Max had found his seat, not really noticing who were already seated around him. Now was the time to focus, chatting with classmates he could always do later. His first attempts at the levitation charm had been disappointing to say the least. When he finally managed to get the stupid object off the ground, it was just wonky. Instead of levitating straight, and going where he wanted it to go, the slightest tremor of his hand had caused it to spin in place. It was embarrassing, and it did not seem to slow no matter what he did.

He was determined to get a better result today. There were no other options. Not unless he wanted to be a laughing stock once again. He got more than his fill of that in transfiguration. He was ready to prove himself today. He was no idiot. He would prove it to the professor, to his classmates, to his friends, even to himself. Today he would succeed.

His attention wandered until the professor started the lesson. Then he zeroed in. Of course his hands kept themselves busy, turning his wand over and over. It was not a big movement, nor did it make a lot of noise, but it helped him focus. It was the sound of a sigh that drew his attention elsewhere. The girl next to him looked not too pleased. It took him longer than he would have liked to remember and place her. Of course, the Slytherin he joked with in history of magic a few weeks ago!

It was conflicting. As much as he wanted to pick up their banter again, because it was all good fun, it was not what he needed today. He had a job to do, and he could afford no distractions. But it felt rude to just pretend she wasn’t there at all. So he leaned slightly over to her, lowering his head to not be overheard. «As much fun as it would be to joke around with you, I sort of need to focus today. Do you mind that?» It was technically he himself that was the instigator last time, but he didn’t really see it that way. Nor was he likely to, no matter what were to transpire today.
