The early afternoon sun was bright as can be, despite the thin layer of stratus clouds doing their best to drown it out. The fountain trickled away at the center of the courtyard, Robin's gaze watching the falling water with an empty expression on her face, her mind completely elsewhere. The Ravenclaw sat, legs extended and crossed, arms stretched out behind her, palms pressing against the cool stone bench with room enough for three. Robin's mind was lost, completely fixated on the book she had stopped reading shortly before coming to this meeting spot. She had just gotten to the part where the book had begun to explain some of the details behind the murder plot. It was only a matter of time before the perp was caught, and the detective had saved the day once more. The detective, of course, being the one and only Dark Knight of Gotham - the Batman. Over Summer break, Robin had found herself painstakingly obsessed with diving into as many adaptations as she could find regarding the Caped Crusader, reveling in the fact that she could once again watch television and use her cell phone. Now that she was back at school, where all sorts of Muggle technology went awry, Robin was forced to reconcile with the few mundane novels she could stuff into her trunk until she returned home for winter.
Robin was supposed to be patiently waiting to meet one of her mentees - one of the first of the year, considering that they had just finished their second week of school the day before. The twelve-year-old wasn't quite sure what to expect - she wasn't even sure what she wanted out of being a mentor. It's not like she'd be gaining a friend out of the experience or anything. If anything, Robin just wanted to show her mentees that all of the students had been new once. That the anxiety and feeling of not belonging wouldn't last forever... at least, not the same way it did when you first arrived at the school. She was still a loner, for now. She hadn't had a chance to meet any more duelling teammates since her meeting with Maisie the previous year. So for now, yes, she was alone... but she did belong. Robin just didn't mind being alone. She was perfectly company enough.
A few minutes passed with Robin's eyes settled on the fountain, not seeing anything but the images inside her brain. Joker, Robin, Oracle... all characters dreamed up by someone without the knowledge of the magical world in the slightest. It was almost painful how misunderstood the Muggle world was to the wizarding world. There were beautiful, creative pieces of art made by people with only their minds as tools. Incredible. The Ravenclaw jumped back into her body when the sudden noise of the magical planner she had bought in Hogsmeade began singing at her in a loud, obnoxious voice, unnecessarily reminding her that it was time to meet her mentee.
"Oh, shut it, you stupid-" Robin grunted, yanking the planner out of her satchel and giving it a firm shaking as a telling off. "I'm already here!"
She grumbled, shoving it back in her satchel, cursing herself for ever thinking that the planner would ever be useful to her. She had considered throwing it away after the first rendition of the song she'd received from the damned thing when she had - once again - already started her homework an hour earlier. But... the thing had been three galleons, and she wasn't one to waste, so... the best she could hope for was that the magic would wear off over time.
Now turning her attention back to the courtyard, Robin's eyes scanned the immediate area, looking for the Hufflepuff girl named Iridia, whom she had owled to meet at this time and date. Robin just hoped that the girl wasn't taller than her, like her first mentee...

Iridia’s eyes were slightly wide as she looked around the courtyard, she was out of breath too. It felt like she had been searching for hours around the castle, trying to find her way through corridors, moving staircases, classrooms, you name it, and she had had probably been through it today. She had felt like giving up when it came to trying to find the courtyard. Yesterday, she had been relaxing in the common room, when one of the older Huffepuffs had come up to her, saying that she now had a mentor, and she was to meet with them tomorrow. She didn’t get many details, but, her name was Robin Marie, and she was a Ravenclaw. Iridia didn’t mind having a mentor, but, as she looked around the courtyard to try and find her. Her heart felt like it was beating out of her chest. She tried to stop her hands from shaking as she groaned out loud, currently she had no luck at seeing her anywhere, and she began to move as she started to make her way around the courtyard. She was looking for some blue really, that was the best way to find her.
Iridia didn’t mind having a mentor, she supposed she had a mentor from Ravenclaw for interhouse unity, which she wholeheartedly agreed with. Iridia hummed to herself as she looked around the courtyard. It was gorgeous, and the weather was nice too. She felt quite drawn to being out here, it was much more peaceful, and it meant less onlookers if she ended up embarrassing herself infront of her new mentor, and maybe friend? Although she doubted the friend part. She certainly didn’t seem to be having much luck with that part of her hogwarts life. Although she didn’t mind! She herself was perfectly good company to be around, and she knew what she liked, disliked, favourite colours, food, and she didn’t need to try and remember anyone else's, but she did sometimes feel a little lonely, watching other students laugh together and talk, but, she really didn’t mind, or, at least she didn’t think she did.
Iridia stopped her train of thought when she spotted someone sat on the bench near the fountain, with a boom. She was in blue, seemed to be alone, ticking off checkboxes in her head, Iridia assumed that this would have to be her mentor. So, she took a deep breath, and took a small, anxious walk over to the bench. Hufflepuff pride, but don’t embarrass yourself! She felt her cheeks warm slightly as she walked up to the bench, she couldn’t be less nervous if she tried. So, with one more breath, she spoke, although her voice came out soft and quiet, tentative. The nerves were definitely winning.
“Uhm, excuse me? Are you Robin? I-If not I’m so sorry, I was just supposed to meet my mentor here, and she’s a ravenclaw so I assumed it was you…!”

Robin wasn't usually one to take notice of someone else's nerves. It was something she generally didn't bother with; she took joy in seeing people sweat, especially during first introductions. But something about this young Hufflepuff girl who could barely spit out a proper sentence when addressing Robin made her want to drop the act and comfort the poor, slightly trembling first year. Robin couldn't imagine why the girl was so nervous. From her perspective on the bench, the Hufflepuff looked to be around the same height as Robin, and it's not like she was much older than the girl... Robin wondered what it was about her that seemed so off-putting to people, and couldn't quite decide if she enjoyed the feeling as much as she usually did this time. Despite her inclination to mother-hen the girl, Robin needed to make sure she was trustworthy. So the scrutiny would remain, as it did for all potential people Robin would be spending any amount of time with.
She paused before responding, taking a moment to look her new mentee up and down, trying to read between the lines. She had long, wavy brown hair and freckled cheeks, currently flushed with color. Her voice was small and timid, and now that she was properly standing, she noticed with satisfaction that she indeed was taller than Iridia... even if just by a smidge. Robin smirked, allowing the moment to stretch for just a little longer. The waiting might seem cruel to anyone other than Robin, but that's simply how she was.... Then the Ravenclaw couldn't help herself anymore and decided to put the poor girl out of her misery.
"Why, hello, yes, I am indeed the Robin you are looking for. It is wonderful to be acquainted with you, dear Iridia," She said with mock enthusiasm, rising to her feet in a burst of energy and taking the girl's hand and shaking it enthusiastically three times. "Now, tell me. How long did it take you to find the courtyard?"
Robin remembered her first weeks at school, specifically a time when she and Odette had gotten lost in the halls before Transfiguration class, ultimately running into a ghost who spoke in riddles that led them on their way. It had been quite the unfortunate tale, considering the girls lost house points for being late because of Robin's absolute unwillingness to admit she had been lost. Even to this day, Robin still struggled to recognize her location when wandering mindlessly, but the girl at least always had a good idea of which wing she was in and what floor she was on. If you could figure out how to get out, you weren't ever really lost, were you?
"Oh, yeah, so I guess I'm your mentor or whatever... Not really sure why they want me to show you the ropes, but uh..." Robin scratched the back of her neck absentmindedly, eyes wandering the courtyard to brainstorm what she wanted to do first. "Wanna play a game of exploding snap?"

Iridia felt her cheeks get redder as the second year seemed to almost study her, and not only did she feel rather embarrassed, but she was also rather anxious, her shy personality was getting the better of her. While with her parents, when she was in Pureblood society, she seemed so confident, outside of that, Iridia was awful with any social interactions, she stuttered, and her shy nature always got the better of her. However she did breathe a slight sigh of relief when she had been told that yes, this was infact her mentor, Robin, her eyes widened a little at the enthusiasm of her, as she shook her hand 3 times. Iridia’s hair was currently changing between yellow and a lilac colour, and sometimes an orange, in tune with her current emotions, embarrassment, shyness and shock. She glanced up at her hair, and groaned on the inside, stupid damn hair, sometimes she hated being a metamorphmagus, and lying certainly wasn’t something she could do here either.
Iridia wasn’t sure what her mentor was thinking, but she seemed a little too enthusiastic, and Iridia wondered if she was just being made fun of, which seemed weird, especially if she was supposed to be her mentor, she felt herself frown a little at the thought, before she cleared her throat and put a small smile on her face, although the feeling that she was being laughed at was heavy in chest, and it certainly wasn’t a nice feeling.
”It’s nice to meet you too Robin, uhm I did get lost for quite a while, I came from one of the higher floors, and the stairs kept moving me to the wrong place…I was stuck there for ages before I even got outside!”
It honestly felt like she had been stuck up there for hours if she was completely honest. And Iridia wasn’t the best at asking for help, more so because she didn’t want to embarrass herself anymore than she needed to, plus everyone had already gone off into their own individual groups. She had been getting lost constantly since she starter Hogwarts earlier in the year, which meant she had been late to a lot of her classes. Luckily most of the professors were willing to look away from it, considering it was only her first year, and she hoped to have the castle memorised by the end of year.
“Is this your first time being a mentor? I mean I don’t mind if you don’t want to be one…honestly I didn’t even know I would be getting one, one of the prefects came to tell me in the common room, so I guess it’s a shock to us both…and sure, I love exploding snaps! I used to play it with one of my house elves all the time…”
Iridia could hear herself rambling, and so she got a bit quieter, mother always said that talking too much meant no one would want to be your friend, and that you would be seen as too smart, or too loud, or just too much in general.

Watching the Hufflepuff's cheeks redden, Robin was more confused than ever. She wasn't sure exactly what about her words had embarrassed the first-year girl, but she wondered if it might be better if she took a different approach. Then she immediately dismissed the idea because she didn't know how to take any approach other than the direct one. She was about to open her mouth to question the girl when a shift in the yellow hue of her hair turned into a soft purple color in the blink of an eye. Robin's jaw dropped, eyes locked on the girl's still-shifting hair that was now turning a bright orange. The second year was stunned, frozen in place, her hands limp at her sides, and her shoulders sagged in disbelief.
Iridia must have noticed her reaction because she glanced up at her rainbowed locks and uttered a groan. The girl's frustration made Robin compose herself just the slightest bit. Her jaw relaxed, her shoulders straightened, but her eyes stayed locked on the dazzling colors, completely entranced by the magical display. The girl had begun speaking, and Robin should have been listening more closely. She was, of course, supposed to be somewhat of a role model. It was right there in the name. But her brain was busy whirling as she was trying to figure out how this girl had managed to get her hair color to shift like that! Robin wondered if it was a magical hair barrette... or maybe a spell? A potion? Whatever it was, Robin was intrigued and didn't hear a single word of Iridia's until she'd asked her directly if this was her first time being a mentor. Robin bobbed on her heels, finally breaking her stare from the girl's hair to look at the ground to hide her surprised laugh.
"Okayy, that's a fair assumption, but no, love, this is not my first time," Robin spoke through a chuckle. "Though I really am no good at this, so I won't blame ya if you run bloody screaming, know what I mean? Wait- did you say you have house elves? Like as in… plural? Are you rich or something?" Robin asked bluntly, tilting her head inquisitively. "And how did your hair do that color shifty thing?"
As she spoke, Robin plopped herself back down on her bench and patted the space next to her, inviting Iridia to sit as she revealed a pack of cards before them both. She began shuffling absentmindedly, mind still on the twenty questions she'd just asked her mentee. Jeez, she was bad at this. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Robin decided she might as well offer the girl a bone to chew, even if it was in the form of yet another question.
"Ehrm.. so how's school been so far?"
Mental, Mirrored, & Mentored
If things were not already bad enough for Iridia, her mentor was now staring right up at her currently changing hair colour, and she could just feel her hair now going a complete yellow from embarrassment, having your hair changing colour constantly is not as fun as it seems, and this was one of the reasons, it was a total distraction in conversations, and in classes, the people she sat next to would ask constant questions about it, and half her time was spent answering questions about being a metamorphmangus. She did understand the curiosity, and she didn’t completely mind the questions, just sometimes, it got rather annoying, especially when it was the same people constantly asking and asking, and she also felt that some people wanted to be friends with her, just because she had these abilities.
Iridia did take the offer of a seat, and she sat herself beside robin with a content sigh. All of that walking did really make her exhausted, she wasn’t sure how this castle was so big, but she certainly wasn’t a fan! The constant walking was awful, and she wondered why they didn’t have a better transport system inside, like thestrals or something. Perhaps she could speak to mother and father about it, maybe they could donate some money to the school so they have the resources to do so. But, her train of thought was cut off when Robin spoke, and she was quick to look over at her mentor with a slight smile, it was a bit more confident than when they had first met, which was probably a good sign. If Robin was still watching her hair, she would see it go brown while her eyes changed to a yellow, before her hair was back to changing between yellow and purple, while her eyes stayed grey.
“You are doing a great job, and I promise i don’t want to run for the hills, and uhm, I suppose you would class me as rich, although maybe it is an understatement. I come from two very long lines of pureblood witches and wizards, so we do have a lot of money, but we treat our house elves very well! Mother and father pay them too, at least they say they do. I had a house elf that looked after me while my parents were busy, so we played a lot of games, although I think they let me win every-time..”
Iridi was a little hesitant about saying that, since not everyone reacted well to knowing she was rich, and rich was probably an understatement for her family.
“My hair? Oh well, I’m a metamorphmagus, essentially I am like a shape shifter, I can change the colour of my hair and eyes, as well as my faces shape and stuff, although I am not great at controlling it, the healers had told my parents that it would take years for me to get a hold on it. My hair and eyes change with my emotions usually, which means I can’t exactly lie very well, and sometimes my face changes if I get angry, but if I keep trying, i’ll be able to change my face into animals and other people!”
While Iridia seemed uncomfortable at first, the talk of her abilities seemed to be getting her a bit more confident with her mentor as she watched her shuffle the cards. She loved playing games, and exploding snap was definitely a favourite, maybe she should start carrying cards around with her as well, maybe that’s how she could make more friends.
”Oh classes have been so fun! I really enjoy transfiguration, but it’s also when I am best at, although that is partly due to my metamorphmagus abilities if I am being completely honest, as a metamorphmangus it just comes more naturally to me I suppose…Although all the homework can be a lot, theres so much of it! And some of the homework we are asked to do is insane, i’ve never written so much in my life!”

For some reason, Iridia complimenting Robin really surprised her. A part of herself relaxed, realizing maybe she was in good company, but froze again when she confirmed that yes, she has multiple house elves because she's from a long line of purebloods.
"Does that mean that they want you to like, marry a pureblood one day?" Robin asked truly out of curiosity. "I'm Muggleborn, so I'd never met a house elf until I first visited the kitchens. I can totally show you where those are, by the way, but they're technically off limits. I'm glad they get paid- you really should look into that," Robin nodded to herself, imagining little green elves running around her home doing chores. It would certainly free up some of her own time, as long as they were working for pay rather than being enslaved.
Robin listened intently when Iridia described her metamorphmagus abilities. Robin should have known better, honestly. She was starting dueling this year and would be going against people with different abilities. After her epic blunder with Stelle Mims, Robin didn't want to come off as prejudiced against any other people with special abilities or breeds.
"That sounded really cool until you said the emotions part," Robin looked directly into the girl's eyes. "I can't imagine that's fun at all. Being a first year is hard enough." Robin finished shuffling the cards and began to separate the exploding cards from the rest of the pile before dealing them out. She listened to Iridia discuss her abilities further, nodding along as the girl expressed her interest in transfiguration. Robin completely understood-it was an interesting class. It came naturally to Robin in many ways, to the point that she didn't always complete her Transfiguration homework, yet still passed the class because of her understanding of the subject. She wasn't gifted in the class in the way it seemed metamorphagi were, but they had a great Transfiguration professor. When he explained, she just understood.
"To be completely honest with you, I don't even do my transfiguration homework. I do love the class, though, and I still have an Outstanding in it. I'm glad you're having fun in class. I think my favorite right now is potions. I feel like a real alchemist, ya know?"
Robin finished setting up the game and looked at Iridia with a smirk. "You ready to lose?"
