THE RED QUEEN'S LABYRINTH
(Group 1)

Image posted by the member

Whimsy was in the air, for it was the morning of the Wonderland Waltz at last! Many attendees shuffled and skipped around in their rooms, preparing their finest robes and accessories for the occasion. Though, not all were still sewing the last pearls onto their gowns or choosing their cufflinks.

Brave souls who have taken up the challenge of The Red Queen's Labyrinth have all gathered today in the Small Hall. Each possessed a key that had been delivered to them by an owl, each customised in pattern and shape to match only one door.

Players would feel as if they had entered a life-sized rabbit’s burrow upon entering the Small Hall. Numerous doors spanned the seemingly endless corridor, lying in wait for their chosen group of challengers. Some doors were round, others triangular. The possibilities seemed endless as colours and patterns blurred together from a birdseye view.

Upon fitting one's key into the correct door, the door will swing open to reveal an elegant European garden. Jade green hedges adorned with ruby red roses towered over the players, winding in all sorts of odd angles and curves. It was a maze, and players were faced with the mouth of the beast.

Obstacle 1

Upon taking your first steps into the maze, players will be led down a colourful checker-patterned path. Approaching the end of this path, it became narrow, looping once to reveal the first challenge in their way.

Upon stepping to the end of the path, the leaves of the hedge walls would begin to rustle violently. The ground trembled a little as the once singular hedge wall ripped itself apart, revealing THREE PATHWAYS.

Popping colours, vivid shades: The first path was colourful in many ways. Fungi of all colours and varieties were richly scattered across the path, making the dirt look more like a fruit cake from afar. If you lean too close, some might get mischievous and start to spit rainbow spore clouds at you!

The saying goes, “No journey is taken alone!” Come forth, social butterflies, for on the second path lies countless eyes. Beady-eyed garden gnomes danced in arrow formations in the centre of the path, as if inviting the players in. Even from the entrance, the faintest giggling and a peculiar song of gibberish filled the air.

Elegant, refined, a royal’s heart must never be satisfied. The third path was tailored fit for royalty. The golden arch at the entrance glimmered in the sunlight, and beyond it, beautiful ruby roses were intertwined into the emerald hedges. Opulence was in the air, and the gentle flow of a fountain could be heard down the perfect path.

A riddle is written on an oval sign in loopy letters:
Before you lay a path split in three,
But only one will be a breeze!

Will you go down the first path where life's abundant,
And flourishing nature is the ruler incumbent?

Or prepare for a party,
For the company of critters on the second path is nothing short of hearty.

Opulence, oh, a dream of many.
On the third path where riches a-plenty await,
It is up to you to seize your fate.

One last advice.
Heed it, it shall suffice:
To brave the jungle
is to have a knowing local in the bundle.
To go without, you'd best have an out!

Choices, choices, three too many choices! Which one will you take, brave challengers?

Laasya heard of an event which was happening a few hours before the spring ball. Originally she was planning on staying back in her dorm as she wasn’t that interested for the ball and she felt a cold coming. But after hearing about the puzzle she decided to give it a go. She did not know much about it, she only knew that it was going to be something themed around Alice in Wonderland a fairytale book she read. She got ready for it, having to decide between wearing something casual or formal as it was a formal event but also a puzzle. In the end she decided to go with something casual because she felt that since it was some sort of puzzle, there would be at least some sort of physical activity to be done and who would want to run around wearing a floor length gown? She grabbed her shoes and left her dorm. Pearl on the other hand slept peacefully, which she did nearly everyday but as soon as the sound of Laasya leaving was heard, she began to make a ruckus which she did every time she was disturbed no matter how long she napped. She couldn’t do anything about that cat now, she had to get to the great hall.

When she arrived she saw that the puzzle was a maze, just like the one in Alice in Wonderland. She had never solved one before and she hoped that she would not get lost in it and be trapped there and grow old. She dd however recognize a few people which she was going to do the labyrinth with. They were her friends Julia, Lily and Ada in the houses Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor respectively and were also first years. She entered the maze; there were 3 paths they had to choose. There was also a piece of paper with a riddle on it. The first one was filled with various types of flora. The second path was filled with beady little eyes belonging to garden gnomes which made Laasya a little uneasy as she was never in the presence of one being a muggle born. The third one was decorated sort of like a palace. There were 3 paths and only one of them would lead to a way. She hoped that it wasn’t like the muggle labyrinths where people could get stuck there for hours. She turned to the other 3 girls and said. “Which path do you think is the right one? I think 2 is it but I’m not really sure.”

Ada never much liked school events--or at least, she didn't think so, as she had never actually been to one-- but this puzzle thing that she had heard many conversations about in the past weeks leading up to its date sounded somewhat interesting. It was based off something, though Ada didn't know what. Albert in wandering land, or at least something like it. It was no wizards tail that she had ever heard of. Probably a muggle story. Ada thought one night leading up to the night of the event.

After the many days of sitting, wondering if she ought to go or not, she had made her decision: She would go, just to see what it's like... After all Ada thought, It's some sort of puzzle. How hard can it be?

On the evening of The Red Queen's Labyrinth, Ada got dressed in a simple striped sweater (knit rather untidily by her mother) and baggy jeans that partially obscured her scuffed up black shoes, their once white laces were now a dull shade of grayish brown. Ada had also a knife, given to her by who she assumed was one or both of her parents, but she hadn't known for sure for there was no signed card.

...

The Small Hall was completely unrecognizable. It was as if she was just transported into a life sized rabbits burrow. Numerous doors spanned the seemingly endless corridor, some were round, others triangular. The possibilities seemed endless.

Ada would have gotten completely lost if not for the bronze key held tightly in her palm. It--regardless of what Ada knew-- seemed to know the way. Eventually, after much wandering, the key took her to a circular door, slightly elevated from the ground. It was much like the portraithole that led to the Gryffindor common room. The door was of a dark red. A color that reminded Ada uncomfortably of blood. It had a pure gold handle which was as smooth and round as a stone who had spent many years in the ocean before rolling onto a beach. Then Ada noticed a keyhole, encrusted with what looked like diamonds. Ada looked down at the key in her hand, and noticed for the first time that it too had the silvery crystals around its edges. She inserted the key into the lock and with a satisfying "click" It turned, and the door swung inward.

...

Ada's feet made soft tapping sounds as she walked slowly down a colorful and brightly lit checker-patterned path, which narrowed to reveal what Ada thought at first to be a dead end. That's odd... Ada thought, staring up at the wall blocking her path. The hedge in front of her was just as tall as the rest of the maze. There seemed to be no other forks at the entrance, nor along the path she followed. Have I taken the wrong door? she wondered, a pang of nerves hit her stomach.

Two other girls were already at the dead end. Ada recognized them immediately as the girl from Hufflepuff: Lily, and the girl from Ravenclaw: Julia. This must be my group... Ada thought. Then she heard a rustling of leaves from just behind her. Yet another girl popped out from the path behind Ada. It was Laasya, A fellow Gryffindor, and a first year like Ada and the others. Suddenly Ada's head whipped back around to face front as another rustling of leaves (much louder than when Laasya had entered the scene, and from the opposite end.) They shook more violently than Ada thought possible without tearing it's self apart. Seemingly as soon as the words were in her head then the hedge gave a final shudder and did just as Ada had predicted: It tore it's self apart to reveal three paths. The checker-patterned tiles ended abruptly and the three paths were all very different. Ada's mind started spinning like gears in a clock. Why had the paths reveal themselves only now? She thought looking at the three paths in turn. The first path was colorful in many ways. Fungi of all sizes and varieties were scattered copiously across the path, making the dirt look more like one of Ada's grandmothers fruit pies than soil. The second, Beady-eyed garden gnomes danced in arrow formations in the center of the path, as if inviting the players in. Even from the entrance, the faintest giggling and a peculiar song of gibberish filled the air. They seemed intent on getting someone to set foot on their path. Ada thought suspiciously. The third and final path was one a king or queen would feel at home in. The golden arch at the entrance glimmered in the sunlight, and beyond it, beautiful ruby read roses were intertwined into the emerald hedges. Opulence was in the air, and the gentle flow of a fountain could be heard down this seemingly perfect path. Then Ada noticed something else that hadn't been there before the paths had emerged: A scroll of parchment framed in an oval shaped. Ada stepped closer. The parchment had words on it:

Before you lay a path split in three,
But only one will be a breeze!

Will you go down the first path where life's abundant,
And flourishing nature is the ruler incumbent?

Or prepare for a party,
For the company of critters on the second path is nothing short of hearty.

Opulence, oh, a dream of many.
On the third path where riches a-plenty await,
It is up to you to seize your fate.

One last advice.
Heed it, it shall suffice:
To brave the jungle
is to have a knowing local in the bundle.
To go without, you'd best have an out!

As soon as Ada had finished reading, Laasya spoke. “Which path do you think is the right one? I think two is it but I’m not really sure.”She indicated the one with the many eyes peering out from the gloom, then looking at the other girls and breaking Ada's train of thought. Ada agreed, but gave no more than a slight nod of her head. The other two paths seemed too tempting, too welcoming, too friendly. Ada looked at Julia and Lily, waiting to see if they would say something.

The rest of the players can thank their friend Laasya for choosing the correct path of number two. As they approach the path, it's obvious right away that it's correct, even though they may have been hesitant before know they surely know that it was the correct decision. The roses rustle in the path, almost as if they are giving the group a silent congrats for choosing the correct path.

Upon choosing the correct path, which was number 2 the players find themselves before a door buried deep in neat, green hedges. The air smelled of red and white roses, and there was nothing around other than roses, hedges, and that mysterious door. If players were to try and twist its shimmering rose-gold handle, they would find it locked. A keyhole could be found beneath the handle. It was unusually small, smaller than most keyholes. To the right of the door, between a trimmed hedge and a stone wall, players would find a table. Resting on the table was a silver key, the metal glinting in the sunlight.

It was clear after a little way's down the path that it was the right one. It wasn't a long path, and after just a few moments, the air started to lighten again and with every step she took, she moved toward the light until she broke out into a brightly lit clearing. The smell of roses was almost overpowering. After Ada's eye's adjusted to the sudden brightness she looked around. Before Ada stood a door buried deep in neat hedges, the color of green sea glass. These hedges were the only thing there apart from roses (which were scattered in bunches on and around the hedges) the path leading back were they had come and the door directly in front of her.

Since there seemed to be no other obvious option, Ada walked up to the door. It had a plane gold handle that looked as smooth a pebble. Ada reached out and grasped the handle in her small hand. She turned it. It was locked as Ada had expected. Ada examined the door and soon realized what an unusually small key hole it had. Ada looked around again her green eyes perfectly mimicked the color of the hedges. Then something caught her eye that she hadn't noticed before: To the right of the door, nestled between the stone wall of the maze and a neatly trimmed hedge was a table. Upon the table was a large silver key glinting beautifully in the light. A leap of excitement sparked inside her, but it was doused almost as soon as it had occurred. The key was much to large too fit in the abnormally small keyhole. The spark faded and she went back to looking around to see if there was anything else she had missed and to her surprise, there was. Directly above the door was a heart shaped sign, swinging in a light breeze. Ada had to crane her neck to read it as she was quite short.

A key that’s right but far too tall,
Will never fit a door so small!
Shrink the problem, not the door...
Then the key may be used once more.

Another riddle. Ada thought once she had finished reading. She pondered the words in her head going over each line in turn. A key that’s right but far too tall, Will never fit a door so small! That must mean the key on the table... Shrink the problem, not the door... Then the key may be used once more. Shrink the problem not the door. What could that mean? Then something occurred to her: What if we shrink the key she thought rapidly.

"Um... Do any of you guy's know how to preform the Shrinking Charm: Reducio?" She asked, turning around to face the group.

They had done it! Laasya and her group had managed to choose the correct door. And now they were on their way to the second obstacle. Who knew what would be there next. She was very excited but also nervous as she still believed that she could get stuck in the maze. She did not know how she managed to select the correct path on her first try. Maybe it was beginners luck. But she couldn’t think about that now. Not when they had something else to do.

They approached the second obstacle. It was a door buried in green hedges. The air around them smelt like roses. She tried to twist the shimmering handle, but it was found to be locked. “Hmm, that’s strange. There has to be a key around somewhere.” She thought to herself. And there it was. On the right of the door, between a hedge and a stone wall was a table, which contained a silver key. She examined the key. To her disappointment, it was way too big for the key hole. She looked at the door again. Above it there was a wooden heart shaped sign which had some words on it. She squinted to take a better look.

A key that’s right but far too tall,
Will never fit a door so small!
Shrink the problem, not the door...
Then the key may be used once more.

Laasya thought for a while, then she remembered that there was a spell for shrinking objects. But what was it? Just then, she heard Ada’s voice. "Um... Do any of you guy's know how to preform the Shrinking Charm: Reducio?" Unfortunately, she couldn’t. “I don’t know either.” Laasya said apologetically to the group. How were they to get across the room in order to continue?

The lock materialized into a face for a split second and almost, almost appeared to sneer. It cackled and then grew serious.

"Ohhhh so you all don't know the spell you need to shrink the key, then perhaps brute force is warranted go break down my door. Maybe there is a spell that can burn down the whole door or splinter the wood and you can come through."

The lock looked at each of the young spell casters before itself.

"Just don't damage my poor beautiful face. I'm such a beautiful lock don't you know! The door is the one you shall try to force open not me Mr. Poor old Lock." The lock suggested with one more laugh, it was almost creepy.

Then it turned back to a regular lock, though the key still glowed maybe there was something that the players could try and do with the door that would be able to sneak them past. It wouldn't be cheating if they'd managed a successful cast of a spell, or maybe a few good kicks. They just needed to get themselves through right? Did it really matter how? The lock sure seemed to encourage them to attack the door instead.

“I don’t know either.” Ada heard Laasya say. She wasn't surprised. Reducio was a second level spell after all and seeing as she was accompanied by only first years, the odds of someone knowing how to perform the shrinking charm was slim. Ada turned her emerald gaze to the door, which was standing as resolutely closed as ever. It was no sooner than she thought these words than it did something completely out of the realm of what Ada would think a door could do. Then again, Ada thought. This is no ordinary door, in no ordinary place. The lock rippled and shined expanding into an ugly old face, leering at the group of first year girls. It cackled madly for a moment then grew serious.

"Ohhhh so you all don't know the spell you need to shrink the key, then perhaps brute force is warranted go break down my door. Maybe there is a spell that can burn down the whole door or splinter the wood and you can come through."

Said the face, in a snide voice, looking at each of the young witched in turn. A shiver ran down Ada's spine that had nothing to do with the temperature.

"Just don't damage my poor beautiful face. I'm such a beautiful lock don't you know! The door is the one you shall try to force open not me Mr. Poor old Lock." The lock-face-thing continued, then with one more laugh and a small pop it turned back into a lock, although, the lock had obtained an odd gleam that certainly hadn't been there before.

Then, something in Ada's brain clicked. She new exactly the thing that had a chance at getting them through the door. Ada plunged her hand into the pocket of her jeans but instead of pulling out her wand, she puled out a small silver knife, with a curved blade, glinting in the light, and an intricately carved wooden handle that fit smoothly into Ada's palm. The same one she had gotten for Christmas that very year.

Ada turned her back to the door and face the rest of her group, holding out her knife. "What if we used this?" Ada said tentatively. "It's a Locksmiths Knife" She explained. "It is supposed to open any lock, although I've never actually tried it before." She admitted, a prickle of doubt hatching in the pit of her stomach. What if it didn't work? It was a magical door after all, maybe it had other, more powerful enchantments that the knife couldn't penetrate? Ada pushed this thought away however. It was worth a shot wasn't it? She inserted the blade into the lock, were it seemed to meld to the door. So far, so good Ada thought as she took a deep breath in and out, then turned the wooden handle of the knife.
