Cookies from both Paul's grandmas are always most delicious, and the time of the day when they're eaten is usually joyful. The whole family meets, mum makes tea, and everyone reflects on the bakers and the time spent with them, at his home in Scotland.

That is actually what Paul thinks of when pronouncing the idea of having a cookie as a prize for successful completion of the race.

His abilities are very far from perfect too. In flying, he hasn't flown that fast yet, nor has he flown higher than the rest of his classmates. But, this, he certainly sees as an opportunity to develop his skills. Being a competitive person, he's not really used to losing either, so, no matter how the race is going to go, Paul is determined to go as fast as possible.

When Skylar warned them that she won't go easy on them, he graced her with a mischievous grin and a sharp twitch of both eyebrows.

"Counting on that!"
Called the boy jovially, salutating at them with two fingers, in, perhaps, some sort of a goodbye, see you later. Or maybe, he did it instead of a wish to break a leg. One way or another, Paul winked at them challengingly.

When the race started, Paul wasn't really waiting, he went forward. It was pretty clear that he wouldn't ride the broom as fast as Skylar and Ellaine. But he was trying his best. When flying across the lake, he was so sure that he tried to lean down, towards the handle of the broom.
Come on, Paul, this is your chance. Going through the forest will be way more complicated.

His competitiveness was pushing him forward, even though his eyes were tearing hard as he was crashing the air at a rather high speed. Therefore, he narrowed his eyes so much that his eyelashes filtered at least some of the air. He started watching where he was going with eyes so narrow that he almost wasn't watching it at all.

When approaching the forest, he started flying slower. Trying to keep flying behind Skylar, he could only see her blue hair in the distance soon. Even despite his slow pace though, Paul somehow didn't manage to avoid a sharp branch, at some point, which tore his sleeve. He was surprised, so he slowed down even more, looking back and trying to find out what it was that tore his tee. There was no point, as it was too far behind him, now.

So he turned his head to look back forward, as he'd never stopped the broom entirely. There was a tree right ahead of him though. Paul pulled the handle immediately to the left, in order to try and avoid it. However, he didn't manage that entirely either. One of the outsticking tree branches scratched him on the cheek.

"Ah!" Hissed the boy, shocked. He stopped flying for a while, hanging in the air, as he touched his cheek, running his finger over the rather long and deep scratch, feeling something wet.
"Ugh, dammit." Did he force out, as he noticed drops of red liquid on his fingers.

Come on, you can do this, Paul. You have to! You can't let them beat you!

With only a bit of hesitation, Paul flew forward again. The damage done was significant, as he was behind now. He couldn't see Skylar anymore, but at least, he managed to fly through the forest in one piece.

Ellaine leans down low towards her broom as she speeds over the lake’s surface. She might not be that interested in physics but even she knows that to lean down is to accelerate her brooms— something about aerodynamics, she remembers from her cousin, though it is admittedly dropped in a vastly different scenario. With the path clear as it is right now, Ellaine thinks that it would do her well to speed up, and it seemed that Skylar was ahead of her in that.

Looking forward, squinting against the whipping winds against face, she sees Skylar speeding past her. Ellaine suddenly wants to laugh for no reason. It is an annoying affliction which hits her at the most random of times. She acquiesces and smiles instead, going faster and faster, keeping the approaching forest in her sight. The glimpses she catches of the water below seems to blur away, and all she can see is Skylar ahead, the first trees of the forest, and the rippling surface of the lake up front.

As soon as she swerves past the first tree, she begins to slow down moderately. Her eyebrows are furrowed, almost unconsciously, and she tries to take note of every branch and trunk and tree in her path. The sheer difference between the obstacle-less lake and the death-trap of the forest is quite jarring to her mind, yet she is hesitant to lose too much distance to her friend, who is getting smaller and smaller…

She can hear Paul somewhere behind her, she is sure, but Ellaine suddenly finds herself concerned about hitting the trees.

Just as that thought gets louder in her mind, something scratches her face. Ellaine immediately slows down, hesitantly bringing her left hand up to her cheek. Flicking her eyes over, she sees that it is red. Mildly concerned about hitting an even larger object, and properly chastised, she slows down her broom— perhaps too much, even. Once a scratch is enough, she thinks to herself, and is properly relieved to find her way through without any further mishaps.

Breaking through the walls of trees at last, she finally gazes forth to see Skylar far in the distance…

Skylar laughs as she soars through the air, a grin splitting across her face. The tower gets bigger as she comes near it. "C'mon guys! You better catch up soon or else the cookies are mine!" She calls out playfully. However, she pauses when she hears no response.

It is quiet. Too quiet.

Turning to look behind her, Skylar finds no one there. Concern immediately floods her as alarms blare in her head. Her friends should be here, so where were they? Her eyes scan the horizon, panic rising in her by the second. That is when she spots two figures in the distance. Ellaine appears to be just a little ahead of Paul, but her speed has slowed significantly. Skylar knits her brows in confusion. Both Ellaine and Paul had prove themselves to be quite skilled with the broom, regardless of experience. So why are they all the way back there?

That is when Skylar catches a flash of red. However, none of them were wearing red. The trees, Skylar curses internally. How could she be so careless? Guilt seizes her as she realizes that this was all her fault. She should have considered the risks of flying through the forest. Now her friends were injured and far in the distance.

Gripping her broom tight and leaning forward, Skylar does a whole turn and zips back to where she came from. She was not going to leave her friends. Screw winning the race, this was her fault and she has to fix it.

She glides through the air with more speed than she did on the lake, making a straight beeline towards the edge of the woods. Ellaine and Paul become more visible as she gets closer, as well as the wounds they have on them. Both Ellaine and Paul have cuts on their face, and Paul had a torn sleeve. Skylar mentally berates herself for putting her friends in harm's way.

She slows as she reaches her friends, her panicked voice calling out to them. "Guys, I am so sorry. I didn't know you guys would get injured from flying through the forest, and that is my fault. Are you guys alright? How bad is the cut?"

Skylar reaches into her pocket and pulls out two handkerchiefs. She hands one to each of her friends, hoping the handkerchiefs can help wipe off the blood that was dripping down. She also had a few bandages on her, courtesy of her mother. Better safe than sorry, she would always say. Skylar is going to have to send a letter of thanks to her mother later.

With that, she hands each of the bandages to her friends as well, that way they can prevent infection. It may not seem much, but cuts can progress very badly if not treated. Skylar then fusses over her friends a bit more, like a nervous mother hen. She apologizes profusely, to the extent where she is sure she might be getting annoying.

After making sure for that her friends are not in danger of dying, for the millionth time, Skylar finally lets out a sigh of relief and gives them more space. Her eyes drift back to the tower in the distance, the sun setting slowly behind it.

"How about we fly to the tower together this time? Just to enjoy it. And then we can all have cookies later." Skylar suggests, turning back to her friends. She was not going to put her friends in harm's way again. Ellaine and Paul deserve much better than that. It is the least she can do.

Paul exhaled in relief once he finally left the forest behind. He even closed his eyes for a bit, enjoying as the wind was blowing through his hair, ruffling it. It was... liberating. And calm. Despite all the injuries and bad luck he was haunted by all race long, what he felt when hanging in the air and just chilling, was only comparable to what he was feeling on the football pitch whenever he got the ball and was running to the goalpost.

Paul chose to focus on his heartbeat for a moment, for it was faster than normal. Perhaps, he could try to slow it down a little.

Thump.

Joy and freedom.

Thump, thump.

Adrenaline rushing through his blood and calmness.

Thump.

At that point, he heard someone else's presence. His smell and hearing were the only senses he was using, as his eyes were closed till now. He opened them instantly though, seeing Ellaine. He only saw her from the side that she had the scratch on.

He wondered for a split second what to say. If to ask her if she was okay, but the scratch seemed to be the only injury she got. No, he wouldn't ask her about that. He wouldn't wish to be asked about that either. Injuries were the risk they all chose to take, and they became souvenirs or trophies even, of this race.

"Hm... I think we deserve more cookies for the wounds. An extra cookie for every scratch sounds fair, right?" Did he joke in the end, the corners of his lips twitching up.

At that point, Skylar approached them. That girl... thought Paul, looking at her as if she were an ancient goddess. There weren't many students he would look up to here. Teachers maybe, but not students. But the blue-haired girl was certainly admired for her flying skills. How fast she managed to fly through the forest, how she skimmed over the lake, how fearless and at ease she seemed while doing so... Paul just couldn't. When I grow up, I want to be like her! Ran through the boy's mind and he actually chuckled over this silly thought. They were of the same age.
"Guys, I am so sorry. I didn't know you guys would get injured from flying through the forest, and that is my fault. Are you guys alright? How bad is the cut?"

"Nah, chill. We chose to join the race, it's on us, not on you." He chose to wave it off. He knew it was true, because he himself was the iniciator of hundreds, if not thousands of such races in his life. Any footballers around? Let's go, do a running race! Any passer-by cyclists? Let's go, do a cycling race! Anyone around? Let's do a race!

Letting Ellaine speak, he ran his fingers over his scratch, finding out that, thanks to the motion of the air, the blood had nearly dried. It certainly had dried on his fingers already.
"Nothing a plaster wouldn't fix." Uttered the boy quietly at the end. He then pulled his T-shirt's sleeve away, to see the full scope of the hole in it. When he looked back at the girls, he had a huge grin on his face. "Guys, there's a hole in my tee... yay! I can finally use the mending charm on something! That's awesome!"
"How about we fly to the tower together this time? Just to enjoy it. And then we can all have cookies later."

"Aye! Let's go!"

Squinting into the distance, Ellaine sees the way Skylar slows down, making a turn and heading – back? Skylar seems to head straight for her, and Ellaine wants to ask her what is wrong, for even this far she can tell her distress.

And where is Paul, anyway? She hadn’t seen him when she left the trees behind. A strange pull moves her to look back, just in case, and – voila! There she sees Paul, a bit worse for wear, with cheeks bearing scratchs, and rips in his shirt sleeve.

He looks… concerning.

Ellaine slows down, and does a wide turn around, aiming to fall back in line with Paul. She knows that Skylar is heading for them, and decides that she may as well check on him too. Sure enough, as soon as Skylar comes close, she descends on them like a mother hen would do – actually, she just reminds her of a friend, back at home. For a moment, their faces merge together, forming an uncanny likeness in their frantic worry. Skylar is very kind, she decides then and there. Blinking her eyes, Ellaine instead smiles at her, accepting the bandage and handkerchief all while trying to gently dissuade her from worrying.

"Guys, I am so sorry. I didn't know you guys would get injured from flying through the forest, and that is my fault. Are you guys alright? How bad is the cut?"

Ellaine shakes her head in denial. She raises her pointer finger and taps it against the cut twice. “It’s not a big scratch, see?” she says, and ignores the way it mildly stings. Experience tells her that it will do that for a while, but it will heal all the same. “I’m fine, we’re fine –?”

She ends her statement with a lilt, an enquiry into Paul’s condition.

"Nothing a plaster wouldn't fix."

"We're fine," she repeats. Ellaine takes the answer at face value, because he does seem fine and unbothered about it all. A quick scrutiny, and Ellaine finds that just like hers, it doesn't seem to be bleeding continuously.

"Guys, there's a hole in my tee... yay! I can finally use the mending charm on something! That's awesome!"

A wry smile forms immediately, and Ellaine feels amused at how Paul seems to radiate happiness at the prospect of making use of his magic. Half-consciously, she dabs the handkerchief lightly on her cheek, watching how it returns with a small red stain dirtying its fabric. A clean is in order before she returns it, then. Nothing a small wash won't fix.

"How about we fly to the tower together this time? Just to enjoy it. And then we can all have cookies later."

Nodding along, Ellaine seeks to move towards Skylar's left, preparing for their next stretch of flight. A nice, leisurely flight, this time, and perhaps creating an odd line in the sky. She glimpses the tower they were meaning to end the race at, and looks back at them, leaning forwards lazily to keep her balance.

"Aye! Let's go!"

"The cookies await!"

"Aye! Let's go!"

"The cookies await!"

Skylar breathes out a sigh of relief at her friends' cheeriness. They are not seriously injured and still seem to be in great spirits. Sharing a grin with Ellaine and Paul, Skylar turns around and begins flying towards the castle at a comfortable speed. The sun was setting in the horizon, and the temperature was dropping slightly. Hopefully her friends will not mind being in the cold a little.

Together, the trio fly towards the grand tower in the distance, laughing and chatting all the while. The wind breezes past Skylar's face, the refreshing air making her sigh contently. The sky was painted pink and orange, and the clouds float past them leisurely.

As they near the top of the tower, Skylar cannot help but let out a little 'woah' at the sight beneath her. The sun glow makes the school grounds below appear almost angelic, the light wind rustling the trees. Distance cheers and laughter can be heard as students from all around the school make their way inside for dinner. Birds glide past Skylar and her friends, carving out a path in the sky. In the distance, she can spot the white glow of the moon rising from East.

Gently setting down on the tower's roof, Skylar stands there for a moment, just soaking it all in. The golden light bounces off her friends' faces, making their smiles appearing all the brighter. This is nice, Skylar thinks to herself. Plopping down on the roof and setting her broom aside, Skylar pats the empty spaces next to her, gesturing her Ellaine and Paul to join her.

"Well, that was quite an adventure! One worthy of great wizards and witches, such as ourselves." Skylar says playfully, shooting her friends and impish grin. While they await excitedly for Paul's cookies, Skylar also pulls out a few snacks from her pocket and offers them to her friends. She always brings food on her. You never know when you need the sugar boost. Or to just have a picnic on some random tower.

'The cookies await!'

They really did. Paul heard his stomach moan with the thought of his grandma's chocolate biscuits. He couldn't wait, making a decision to take three that afternoon! It was a long time still before dinner, and filling his stomach had always been a top priority for the boy. When it wasn't full, Paul was changing into a hungry, unpleasant goblin, which was not beneficial for Paul himself, nor anyone in his surroundings. //Chill, get a Snickers. You're not you when you're hungry./

So Paul flew with them. For several meters, he was carving again. Once or twice he parted from his friends to make a short detour. On an occasion, he flew down slightly, then up and then repeated it twice, just to try to descend. He wasn't that skilled yet, so he was just doing whatever he thought was worth trying, to explore the limits of his own abilities.

He returned to join the group on ascending to the tower. The view below was splendid indeed, lit by the setting sun, though the height made him slightly preoccupied. Not that he was afraid, just... cautious. At some point, they were passing round a flock of swallows, likely moving to the south, somewhere with warmer weather. No wonder, it's getting really cold around 'ere. Thought the boy matter-of-factly. Actually, he goosebumps ran down his spine as he felt cool for a moment, pulling the hood of his sweatshirt onto his head.

The scenery was impressive indeed. Seeing the students move like ants in the anthill over the courtyard and the grounds, made him chuckle. I wonder how they'd react if the swallow pooped on one of them. Or if we spat on them. Would they think it's starting to rain? Would they cast the Umbrella charm? Gosh, that would be hilarious! We would have to hide then quickly, of course, for them not to see us!

As Skylar started descending onto the roof, Paul was thinking about telling them about his thought. Come on, Paul. Do you really think they will want to try it? They're girls. Girls don't spit. So he shook his head in the end, pushing the idea away.

"Uhm... this looks steep." Commented Paul on the conditions for sitting, levitating opposite Skylar on the roof. He shrugged at the end, not really minding that much. He landed then sat down next to her.
'Well, that was quite an adventure! One worthy of great wizards and witches, such as ourselves.'

"It was... we're cool." Paul grinned, fisting his palm and offering it to them for a fist bump.

He pulled a small box with his cookies out of his pocket, opening it and smelling its content. "Mhm, can't wait to have them!" He hummed, excited. He offered to the girls first.
"A cookie?" Did he smirk.

Ellaine leaned forwards comfortably, relaxing into a steady pace as they flew towards their final destination – one of the castle’s rooftops, getting closer to them with every blink. It would take a considerable amount of time, she knew, as unlike before, they weren’t racing for it, but it was enjoyable nevertheless.

The winds, fresh and inviting, were a welcome sensation as she slowly dragged her eyes in every direction, heedless of how her rationality seemed to disapprove this decision. Pinkening clouds enshrouded the sun, sinking lower into the horizon, melting the skies into a breathtaking kaleidoscope of oranges, purples, and blues. Never had she ever seen such a sight from this height before, and so she greedily drank in this moment, firmly entrenching her fellow fliers in this frame. Skylar, who, similarly to her, was watching the show of Mother Nature, while Paul, seemingly recovered from the previous fiasco, was attempting to practice, perhaps on his flying abilities, going off-course here and then.

Flocks of birds went by, and she kept a safe distance not to disturb their path. She did not look down much, but she heard the distant chatters of what must be students below. It warranted a glance, before her gaze returned to the nature, much preferring the serenity the painting-like scenery brought her.

By the time they landed, Ellaine felt a curious mix of tired and calm. She touched down awkwardly, having trouble with the slightly slanted roof, before turning around and lying down, following Skylar’s gestures.

“Well, that was quite an adventure! One worthy of great wizards and witches, such as ourselves,” said Skylar, a grin wide in her face.

Ellaine wholeheartedly agreed, and added, “An adventure alright… our hard-earned scars will attest to that.”

Ellaine watched, bemused as Skylar pulled out her snacks from— somewhere, while Paul got out his grandmother’s cookies. That amusement turned into embarrassment as she realised she was the only one who hadn’t had the forethought to bring snacks. Ellaine shot apologetic looks to the both of them, murmuring a sorry quietly.

“Mhm, can't wait to have them!”

Ellaine curiously leaned towards the box. It smelled heavenly, she thought.

“A cookie?” Paul offered said cookies, and Ellaine crumbled under the temptation.

“Don’t mind if I do?” she said, and a cookie was soon in her hands. She ventured to wait until they all held one, though she couldn’t resist a bite.

“Delicious…” Ellaine mumbled, eyes widening. Quite odd, as she usually did not much enjoy such sweet confections, but she supposed that Paul’s grandma’s cookies are now one of the exceptions. “Your grandma makes the best cookies,” she uttered with conviction.

Skylar grins as she takes one of Paul's cookies, her mouth already watering from the smell. The sweet aroma wafts through the air, making her buzz with anticipation as she takes a bite of the treat. The moment the sweet enters her mouth, Skylar lets out a hum of surprise. On Merlin and all of his magical ancestors, this is one of the best cookies she had ever tasted!

"Goryhell, tell your grandma to adopt me, too! These cookies can be my only meal for a whole day if I could." Skylar exclaims, her full British accent coming out at her excitement. She says something else about the delicious cookie, but with her excitement and stuffed mouth, her words got quite lost in the wind. Well, her joy was still evident though, so at least her friends can know it is something positive.

And with that, Skylar quickly scarfs down her cookie. One second it was there, and the next second it was gone. It was almost inhuman with how she ate it so fast. But hey, who can blame a hungry girl? Especially if its really good food. Skylar sighs in contentment as the warm treat fuels her, her energy coming back to her.

Together the trio sit on the roof, staring off into the sunset. Skylar chats about anything and nothing at the same time, saying whatever comes to her mind. It is getting quite late, but Skylar does not mind too much. However, the blue-haired girl suddenly has an idea.

Skylar pulls out her wand and gives her friends a mischievous smile. "Hey, you guys want to see something cool?"

Pointing her want to the sky, she calls out clearly, "Bullarum Immortalem!"

At once, a whole stream of bubbles come out of her wand and rain down on the three. Skylar laughs in joy as the bubbles surround them, catching the sun's setting glow. It was beautiful, how the clear surfaces of the bubbles shine like crystals, reflecting all the light that they can see. Skylar grins as she reaches for a bubble, bouncing the fragile thing in her palm. Thanks to the spell, the bubble is impenetrable. Where it goes after, she does not know. But for now, she is happy throwing harmless bubbles at her friends.

Paul drew his wand at some point of sitting next to the two girls. He turned his torso, pulling his sleeve towards the front, to acquire better access to it. His fingers moved fast up and down the sweatshirt sleeve, until he touched it. He then turned his head to see the hole. And he did, in the end. So, in the air, he drew a straight line to the right before turning to a slight diagonal line down in an opposite direction, then diagonally up to the left and one last, straight line to the right. The drawing, if taken as a whole, resembled flipped G or a, or an open triangle.

"Reparo!" Did he order. His wand fortunately listened, making the hole disappear. Paul touched the place where it was to make sure that it wasn't there anymore. Finding out it wasn't, the boy hummed, content about his attempt on magic. So he put his wand back and shifted his weight, lying down, just like the girls did.

"Whoa. This is..." With his eyes on the orange-pink sky in the west, he exhaled and inhaled deeply, holding the breath a little longer. "So pretty. And have ya noticed the people on the ground? They're so small they look like ants!" Chuckled the boy.
'An adventure alright… our hard-earned scars will attest to that.'
"Mhm... amen to that." Paul nodded with a grin. "Never flown so fast, nor so high before. But it seems you two - and you specially, Sky - weren't doing it for the first time." Said the boy reflectively, looking at both girls, especially Skylar. "How often do you fly? Do you both do Quidditch or broom racing?"

Paul put the box with his cookies on his stomach for it to be easily accessible from both Ellaine and Skylar's side. Ellaine asked him if he didn't mind her taking one, so he shook his head, lifting the box and moving it closer to her. "Don't be silly, you can have as many as you like."
'tell your grandma to adopt me, too!'
"No, no, no." The Gryffindor lifted his index finger and shook it from one side to another. "More grandchildren would mean less cookies for me! And I can't have that." Joked the boy.

As Ellaine added her comment on the quality of the cookies, and Skylar said she could eat them all day, Paul smirked, pleased that both girls liked them. "I know. My grandma is the best." Hummed the boy with a small, nostalgic smile. He missed his grandparents, as a matter of fact, even though he knew he would spend lots of time with them in the summer holidays. Sighing, Paul took one cookie too, keeping the box open.

Sky performed the bubble charm then, making Paul chuckle and catch a few bubbles himself, with his nose, chin and forehead.

"Nice, Sky." Breathed out the boy, showing her a thumb-up, while reaching for his own wand. "Ya know what's funny? When it starts snowing in the summer. Nix Facitur!" Paul drew a swirl with a long-flourished tail aiming at the sky. White light with a thin tint of baby blue came out of his wand, and several snowflakes fell onto their heads. It didn't last long though.
