Experiment #028: 'Conflicting Interests, Library Quiet vs. Socializing'

Finally - a moment for Emil to simply breathe, gather their thoughts, sketch out some ideas for some things to look into later throughout Hogwarts. The moving staircases were an obvious choice, but...the idea of losing their balance and tumbling into a fall off of them was quite the effective deterrent for Emil at the moment. There were perhaps the spells that helped the kitchens transport food seamlessly to the Great Hall, but that would probably require going into the kitchens during a busy meal time - which was most likely rude.
'No point in being inconsiderate. The mystery isn't going anywhere for now.'

Well, whatever they ended up looking into next, it would have to be put on pause for now. Emil needed to crack on homework and processing some of their most recent experiments. Almost all of them had turned into social affairs, strangely enough, and yet they hadn't quite gotten the time to compile their findings.
...what even were their findings at this point? Emil hadn't quite gotten that far ahead yet. It was difficult, trying to find some way to parse out a logical answer or some trend or some immutable finding from the quite chaotic few meetings they'd had so far.

The Hufflepuff shook their head softly before returning to the shelves. They needed to find a book about specific ingredients in Potions - they had to write a solid one-and-a-half feet of scroll parchment on the uses for...was it moonstone? Or was it bloodstone?

The library was quiet, the way Rowan liked it, there weren't many students around at that time of day, so the only you could hear was the distant scratch of a quill or the sound of a page being turned or a really quiet hush. Rowan had been here for an hour, maybe more, perched on a stool in the back corner with her knees pulled up and a potions textbook open in her lap. She wasn't reading it, she was just staring at the same paragraph about moonstone properties, her eyes glazing over every time she tried to focus. She didn't feel any particular way about potions, then again, she didn't feel any particular way about anything in her life. She didn't love the subject with a passion but she didn't hate it with passion either and that was that.

She needed the book, the specific one with the chapter on moonstone, the one with a very dull brown hardcover. She had found the shelf where it was supposed to be, a really tall one that Rowan had to arch her head to see the end of it. She had scanned the spines and there it was. On the top shelf, right behind a person.

A redheaded person with freckles like stars on their face and the Hufflepuff crest proud on their robes. They looked like a first year just like Rowan so she felt more at ease in their presence, older students gave her the creeps. The person was just standing there, staring at the shelf like they were trying to remember why they had come to this section in the first place. They weren't reaching for anything, weren't reading anything in particular. Just... existing. Directly in front of the book Rowan needed.

She watched them for a moment, they looked like a nice person who would probably apologize for breathing too loud. Rowan didn't mind nice, she just...didn't understand it. They didn't move, didn't notice her. Just stood there, lost in whatever thoughts were occupying their apparently very still brain. Rowan sighed, quietly. The kind of sigh that said I did not want to speak to anyone today, and yet here we are.

"Excuse me," she said, her voice low and dry. "You're in front of the book I need."

She stared at them with her tired green eyes, she didn't sleep well last night, she couldn't remember the last time she did sleep any better.

“O-Oh!”

Emil turned on the spot, instinctively taking a half-step back from the source of the voice. A young woman who looked…oh dear, was she alright? Emil had learned that Ravenclaw was home to many other late-night researchers like themself, but the girl across from them seemed especially exhausted. The eyes, the posture, the dry voice that sounded to Emil like old boards settling in a cottage seemed to cut through the Hufflepuff’s anxiety a bit.

“Sorry — I was trying to remember if I needed to write about moonstone or bloodstone for Potions. I don’t think Professor Asmaralaya would appreciate an entire assignment about the wrong ingredient, after all.”
Emil paused…and, remarkably, attempted to smile as they tried to joke. It was awkward, anxious, and a fleeting attempt at saying something other than apologies and cowed silence. Even if the attempt didn’t land (Emil assumed it didn’t), they still cleared their throat as they made sure to move fully out of the Ravenclaw’s way.

“…um…I don’t mean to offend, but…are you feeling alright? You look—“
Off? Exhausted? Dear heavens, what didn’t sound offensive!? Why was Emil even trying to pry? This wasn’t their business! But now they’d started and couldn’t stop. Would it sound like a bigger insult if Emil didn’t finish the statement? They had to think, think, think—

“…a bit down,” Emil finally remarked, their voice small and unsteady.

[quote]Rowan stared at them, the textbook was heavy under her arm. The shelf was warm from the afternoon light slanting through the high windows. The Hufflepuff in front of her was practically vibrating with nervous energy, like a rabbit waiting to bolt, and they had just asked her, a complete stranger, if she was feeling alright. Rowan couldn't remember the last time someone cared enough to ask her about her wellbeing. It felt strange, not in a good way but not in a bad way either.

She should be annoyed, and she was. But there was something about the way they had said it. Small and unsteady. Like they were bracing for her to snap at them, which in a similar scenario in other circumstances she might've. She didn't snap this time though. She just looked at them with her tired green eyes, her pale face, the dark fringe of her hair falling across her forehead.

"I always look a bit down, it's my face. I was born with it." It was half annoyed, half an attempt at humor that probably didn't land. She shifted the book in her arms.

"Also, it's moonstone. For the assignment, not bloodstone. You'll fail if you mix them up, but you seem like the type who actually studies, so you probably already knew that."

She paused, tilting her head.

"I'm Rowan, and.. I'm fine I guess. Or I will be once I finish this stupid essay, which I haven't started, which is why I need this book, which you were standing in front of... For a very long time."

She drew a half smile on her face, one that seemed almost genuine and one that disappeared just as quick as it appeared. If one blinked, one would've missed it.

"Ah! Right, yes, moonstone. That...that makes more sense. I don't think we've gone over bloodstone in depth, so...perhaps I should have just checked my notes?"
Emil smiled, soft and sheepish with a self-deprecating shrug of their shoulders. Merlin's beard, they were a mess! Why did they have to be like this?!

However, Emil then remembered that they also needed that book on moonstone as well, and now they were standing right in the middle of a conundrum: there was one book left to find and two students that needed it for homework. That meant either having to squabble for it, one of them giving it up and having to go hunting for another copy...or-
"Um...since we both need to do the essay, perhaps it'd be best if we...work together?"
The Hufflepuff was already bracing to be shot down, but it made the most logical sense in their mind to offer up the solution.
"I can keep quiet, if you prefer silence. I would just like to complete this homework soon before this evening - I have other things to investigate and...I don't like staying up later than I have to."
A pause.
"...I, um...I have some leftover food from the Great Hall, if you'd like to share that as well?"
Emil quietly patted their bag, where they'd wrapped up a small snack of a couple cheese pieces and apple slices from earlier.

Rowan stared at the Hufflepuff. They were nervous and apologetic that Rowan had to stop herself from rolling her eyes. Offering to share food like that would somehow make up for the inconvenience of existing in her space. She should say no, take the book and walk away and finish her essay in blessed, solitary silence hidden behind some shelf far away from prying eyes.

But they had a point. One book and two students, and the same assignment. Working together was the logical solution, even if she hated the word "together." It sounded like a trap, like someone asking you to hold hands and jump off a cliff at the same time. Together was how they had taken Clara and broke her mother. Together was a leash dressed up as a hug, and Rowan had no interest in wearing it.

She looked at their face, freckled, anxious, bracing for rejection, and sighed. Not heavily, just enough to let them know she was annoyed but not enough to be rude. Although Rowan's definition of rude can be more open and flexible following her own moral compass, which in most cases, was not the most reliable.

"Fine," she said, dropping the book on the table with a thump. "But I work better in silence. If you talk to me while I'm reading, I will pretend not to hear you." She sat down across from them, pulling the book closer. "And I don't need your food. I'm not a stray cat."

She paused, glancing at their bag.

"...What kind of cheese?"
