Clark packed his brown leather bag, with a few rolls of paper, his pen and ink, and stuffed a few schoolbooks into it aswell. Eventhough it was Saturday, Clark had agreed to meet up with Ezra Calloway, a fellow first year, to study together. Adjusting his bag on his shoulder, he checked if his knitted sweater sat well, and that his necktie was straight and not loose. When he was sure, he had everything, Clark made his way downstairs into the common room, and through the portrait, out into the school‘s corridors.

He moved through the corridors, with measured steps, taking in his surrondings.

His eyes caught onto Roses.

Flying ones.

Clark stopped for a second, watching as they floated past him, leaving behind a trail of shimmer, before disappearing around a corner. His confusion mixed with the surronding noises, coming from the Voices of multiply Students. He could make out laughter, softer tones and even whispers, that felt different… . Too soft. Too close. everything felt oddly warm and intimate today.

He knew what day it was.

Valentine‘s day.

He just hadn‘t…expected…this.

Another Rose drifted past Clark, and this time he leaned back slightly to avoid it, his brows knitting together in quiet confusion.

"Why are they flying...?", he muttered to himelf.

Even if he was used to things floating around, as the candles and stars in his room did, but never did Clark expect to see actual floating roses. It‘s not like he ever really knew what to do on Valentine‘s Day. His parents basically never here, when this date came around. Did they even celebrate it? Clark didn‘t know, and neither did he really care anymore.

Couples passed him in the hallway, some holding hands, others exchanging small gifts, their voices lowered in a way, that amde Clark instinctively look away. Listening felt like stepping into something he wasn‘t part of.

It was too much.

They were all…too close.

An exhale escaped his lips, and he tried focussing on what lay ahead of him.

The library.

He and Ezra were supposed to meet there. For studying. something norma. Something that didn‘t involve floating roses…or whatever all this lovey dovey gestures were about.

Clark pushed the heavy door open and stepped inside, the quieter atmosphere immediatly seetling around him. The noise faded, replaced by soft rustle of pages and distant whisperes.

That was…a lot better.

Clark let his gaze wander across the bookshelves, the tables that were already occupied with students.

"...Ezra?", he called out softly, his voice careful, almost hesitant as he stepped further inside, letting the door fall shut behind him.

Ezra was sitting at a table in the library, bobbing his head to the tune he was playing in his head, jotting down doodles on a scrap piece of paper. The tune had come to him as he made his way to the Library that day, navigating the hallways that he had now grown fondly familiar of.

He was a frequent visitor of the Library, and he knew it would be a quiet place to spend the day. He had invited an acquaintance of his, a Gryffindor called Clark Stellan, whom he had wanted to make friends with for a while now, to come and study with him. He had carefully crafted what he was going to say and to his joy Clark had accepted.

Now he was waiting, his mind lost in tune, for his new friend to arrive. He had planned vaguely what he was going to study, his weakest subject; Herbology. He mentioned this to one of his friends and they found it very amusing. His first instance of magic was based around plants but he struggled the most at studying about them.

He had brought along a notebook where he jotted down his thoughts and doodles regarding interesting things he saw. He calling it his journal, he stuck various things he found sentimental and wrote down his favourite memories there. It was his new favourite possession, he now took it with him everywhere. It now sat in his messenger bag that was slung on the side of the chair he was sitting on, in it was wedged his favourite trinket so far, a blue bookmark gifted to him by his first friend at hogwarts.

"Ezra?"

He looked around, hearing his name called. There he was. Clark. Ezra smiled at him. "Hey" He said fondly. Unfortunately the tune in his head evaporated at that moment and he frowned, slightly disappointed.

Clark stepped closer after Ezra looked up, giving him a small, almost hesitant nod in return to the quiet 'ʜᴇʏ'. He let himself drop onto a chair across from Ezra, taking notice of the gentle scrapping of the chairs legs against the floor. He sat his bag down beside him, his fingers lingering on the strap of it for a second longer before letting go. Then he began to open it, pulling out a few of his books, and a few rolls of parchment, his feather and ink, placing them neatly and organised infront of him. Everything about how he moved was controlled, like he was afraid he would slip any second.

After everything was set up, Clarks fingers found his rings again.

Turning one. Then another.

For a moment, he didn‘t move, neither did he look up to Ezra. He just listened to the quiet rustle of pages, the hushed voices of the other students, Ezra‘s presence across from him. It wasn‘t uncomfortable…it was just unfamiliar to him.

As he finally glanced up, his gaze settling briefly on the notebook in front of Ezra, the doodles scattered across the page. A small detail, but it caughthis attention.

"You…draw alot?“, he asked quietly, almost careful, like he didn‘r want to break the calm around them.

A pause followed, than he added, a bit more sure about his words this time "It looks…good.“ a small, even if awkward smile followed, before he began to shift in his seat again, grabbing a book from the small stack of his books, even if he hadn‘t opened yet. His eyes flickered back to Ezra, the eye contact more steady now.

“I wasn‘t sure if you already started studying…or even what subject you wanted to study…“, he than rasped out looking at Ezra slightly expectantly.

Ezra smiled to himself as Clark sat down opposite him, settling his things down. He seemed rather stiff in his movements but Ezra decided that was none of his business. "You draw a lot?" Clark had asked. Ezra looked up with a surprise, realising he hadn't put away his notebook yet.

"Oh no, I just doodle sometimes. I like cartoons so I tend to scribble random cartoonish creatures here and there." He explained, slightly embarassed. Nobody had really noticed his drawings till then. To be fair he didn't usually draw often. His mind went back to what he was supposed to be doing.

"Oh I was just waiting for you. I should have let you know in advance huh... We can either work together or just study separately I don't mind. I was going to cover some Herbology since I suck at it, but you can study what you want." He said with a warm smile. There was an air of calm that followed Clark which put Ezra at ease. His previously existing anxiety seemed to disappear and he was there, in the Library, studying Herbology.

"I today is way less crowded than usual. I wonder why..." He had noticed the strange reduction in population at the Library. Usually there were many more others studying at this time. He didn't dwell on it, though he was curious. Maybe Clark had an answer.

Clark just sat on his seat looking at Ezra, while the Hufflepuff spoke, processing his words. His fingers still moved over one of his rings, turning it once, twice, a steady rythm grounding him.

Doodling.

He glanced briefly at the notebook again, the scattered drawings making a bit more sense now. There was something…easy about it. Something unstructured. Clark couldn‘t quite rekate, but he didn‘t mind it either.

"It‘s still good…I like your doodles.“, he than said, his voice carrying a softer undertone, before he paused, letting the topic settle.

When Ezra continued, mentioning Herbology, Clark gave a small nod, letting his gaze drift towards his books. Did he brought his Herbology book? He narrowed his eyes to make out the titles on the book spine. As he found it he looked back at ezra, clearing his voice before answering.

"Together is fine.“ he said with a clear and steady voice. "I don‘t really mind.“

It was way easier to study together, even if Clark still has to get used to it, because he mostly spend his time alone, before coming to hogwarts.

At Ezra‘s comment about the library being way quieter than usual, Clark‘s eyes drifted towards the window, as if expecting to see something outside. He could still sense the slight smell of the roses, even if they were far away from eachother. Perks of being a werwolf, i guess. For those kind of things Clark hated being a werwolf, not that he didn‘t hate being a werwolf in general, but especially the heightened sense of smell made it hard to focus most of the times, when intense smells were lingering around. As the smell of roses in this case.

"It‘s Valentine‘s Day.“, Clark answered after a short pause, his voice even, like he was stating an obvious fact. "Most people are somewhere…else.“

A slight hesitation.

"with someone else.“

His fingers stilled briefly on the ring before resuming their slow movement. He didn‘t explain any further, assuming the said words already have said everything that there were to know.

To distract from the fact that there were people out there kissing under a mistle toe, or holding hands, while walking through hogsmeade, Clark opened his herbology book, though his attention didn‘t fully settle on the pages yet.

"But…you know…it‘s quieter like this…“ he added, quieter now. "easier to focus.“

His gaze drifted back to Ezra, just for a moment, more steady than before.

"We should…probably start.“, he said, though there was no urgency in his voice, just some quiet suggestion.

Ezra's lips cracked into a smile when Clark complimented his drawings. He couldn't help but feel a little bit proud. Perhaps they could become good friends after all. He had quickly taken to the boy, though he still to get to know him. For that Ezra was undeniably enthusiastic inside.

Ezra found Clark intriguing. The way he held himself, his voice, his expressions. He was soft like the calm after a storm has passed. Comfortable like the pleasant pause in a sentence, truly accepting the presence of another in a silence deprived of trivial conversation. It was... reassuring.

He pulled out his Herbology book, softly placing it on the table as not to disturb the calm atmosphere. He blinked in surprise at Clark's statement. "Is it really?" He asked, surprised. February 14th. Valentine's Day. How did he not remember? Not like it mattered much to him anyway. He brushed it aside.

"Yes! You're absolutely right it is way quieter than usual now." He replied, his voice chirpy and upbeat. Perfect for studying! He smiled warmly at Clark. He had a good feeling about today.

Ezra checked his watch. It was high time he went back to his common room. He had a bunch of things to do that day. He sighed. He had loved studying with Clark. They had had fun. Occasionally cracking jokes and getting shushed by the someone, studying so hard that his eyes has started to hurt, and best of all, he had made friends with Clark successfully! Ezra considered this a great day indeed. With Clark's help he has actually managed to grasp a little bit of Herbology.

He looked up and met his eyes, breathing slowly and speaking with purpose. "I think we should stop now." He declared softly. "Thank you so much for meeting me! It was great!" He smiled widely.

Clark didn‘t answer Ezra right away. His eyes stayed on the open book that was infront of him, and the parchment with the notes he had taken while reading through the pages. His still lingered on the edge of the page aswell, before he pulled them away. One of his hands moved back to his rings again, turning one slowly. "..yeah.“, he agreed, nodding. He watched as Ezra packed his things, before he let go of the rings again, and closing his book, making sure, it wouldn‘t snap shut to loudly. The soft sound his book made when it finally was closed, felt final in a way he didn‘t quite expect.

"I enjoyed studying with you…it was better than I expected, actually.“, Clark added glancing up at Ezra again. He reached for his own bag, sliding the books inside while still talking to the other guy, his voice carrying a hint of a steadiness and presence, that even surprised Clark a bit.

"And about Herbology…you are not bad at it.“, he continued, a faint hint of a smile on his lips could be seen. "Just a bit…unsure?“ Clark didn‘t know how he should have expressed it differently, but he hoped Ezra got the meaning behind it.

When Clark had packed the last piece of parchment into his bag, he closed it and picked it up, adjusting the strap over his shoulder.

"And you‘re welcome…I was quite looking forward to this meeting aswell.“, there was a short pause before he spoke again.

"We could…do this again sometime.“, he said, glancing back at him. “If you want Ofcourse. It‘s easier…studying with someone.“

He shifted slightly, standing there for a second, looking like he was unsure what to say next.

"Just-maybe not on Valentine‘s Day next time.“, he said, almost under his breath, a small dry note in his voice.

Then after a brief pause again, he gave a small nod.

"...see you, Ezra.“

"I enjoyed studying with you…" Clark had said. Ezra's mouth spread into a friendly grin. "Any time! We can always do this again if you want!" He replied warmly. "it was better than I expected actually." Ezra shot him a quick glance. Was that a... friendly jab? He thought, his grinning from ear to ear.

Clark continued, "And about Herbology…you are not bad at it. Just a bit…unsure?" Ezra barked a laugh at his remark. "Not bad? I rock at herbology!" That was false. He, in fact, did not rock at Herbology. He realised he was comfortable enough to joke with Clark. We just properly met... He thought, slightly nervously. Was he being too friendly? Was there such thing as too friendly? Did he make Clark feel awkward?

He stood there, and watched Clark make his way out of that Library, seeing him off with a wave. He spent a few more minutes in the Library, searching for a book he'd been wanting to read. He couldn't help but smile to himself as he picked up his bag. He stopped by the librarian and borrowed his book and left the Library, pushing aside his worries and basking in the warmth that had lingered with him after his encounter. He hummed happily to himself as he made his way down the halls of Hogwarts. He still had the whole day ahead of him, and he was going to spend it well. He smiled to himself. Perhaps this was the dawn of a new friendship.
