"Hey, dude, you okay? Now you're the one who seems like just saw a ghost."
He laughed. And with that smile on his face, the memories of Mariah kept flooding him. Memories of those nights when, instead of going to bed, she used to sit at her desk and, just under the light of her lamp, she'd write all kinds of letters.
But then, something clocked into his brain. She said she used to write letters to her Hogwarts friends, the ones she stopped meeting once she graduated. What if they didn't know about her death? What if they were clueless?
But no. They'd notice she stopped writing letters, and would've sent something back. They would've done something.
Unless, once again, they were clueless about it.
He decided to take a leap of faith.
"She said she went to Hogwarts. Their... Wizarding school. I assume all the British wizards went there. Did you go there, too? Did you met her?"
What if there was something he was missing? A piece of the puzzle that simply... Didn't fit?

"She said she went to Hogwarts. Their... Wizarding school. I assume all the British wizards went there. Did you go there, too? Did you meet her?"
Oh bloody hell. If there was one thing about Andrius, it was that he sucked at lying. There was a reason he kept getting detention, and it definitely was not because of his stealth and subtlety.
"Ah, well... I mean... was her last name Rietveld? If so, then it was mostly my wife who spoke with her, you know? We kind of had a separation between the guys and girls..." Andrius trails off as he glances to the side. Oh, this is going really badly.
"She died from... a heart attack?" Andrius questions. Was that what muggles called it? That would mean the muggles got to Mariah before the Lantsovs then. Or the Lantsovs did get to Mariah first but somehow played the muggle authority into believing their cover story.
Andrius's head begins to hurt as all the memories begin flooding back. This little hangout is becoming more than he can handle. It was suffocating. He needed to talk to Charlotte. He needed to talk to his wife.
Standing up rather unsteady, Andrius puts down the money for the drinks and excuses himself.
"Sorry, I just need to use the restroom real quick. I'll be right back." He mutters out before making a beeline to the restroom stalls. Andrius shuts the door and slumps against it, pulling out his wand. He sends a messenger Patronus to his squad of friends, and pulls out the two way mirror he and Charlotte use to communicate.
Andrius waits for his wife to appear on the other side of the mirror, confusion etched in her face.
"Dear? What's wrong? I'm with the —"
"Mariah." Andrius blurts out to his wife. "John. He is Mariah's husband. Mariah Rietveld. The one that died from a Basilisk in Greece."

Code by Fawkes Chaos John nodded slowly at Andy's information. Well, that was something he didn't knew. After all, Mary used to talk to him about Hogwarts and how wonderful was her time at it, but once he asked about the details of her friends and adventures, she'd always stay quiet and stare into nothing for, like, ten seconds before shaking her head and say 'it was wonderful, too.' with a forced smile.

After a few years, he learned that some questions were better without an answer.
But maybe, he could find an answer in... Charlotte, was the name?
And maybe, he could find out what happened for Mariah to react like that every single time.
But then, Andrius went pale and left to the restroom quickly. Well, maybe that weird alcohol was making some kind of effect in him. But it was all... Suspicious.
Well, John thought. They're wizards. It'd scare me if they acted normal for once.
And yes, that included his own daughter sometimes.
So, while Andy went into the restroom and minutes passed by, John just stared at the window, looking at the street outside and the cars passing, thinking that this was already getting way more weird than it should be.
Five minutes. Ten. Andy was still on the restroom. Mika and Mariah (M&M, as he called them) once told him that people in the Ministry had this weird way of transportation where they got into a restroom and magically ended up at work. Andy said he worked at the Ministry. Did he have to go to work for an emergency?

"What do you mean he's the husband!?"
"That's exactly what I mean. How many meanings can it possibly have? John is the husband of Mariah. How can I look him in the eye when I know how his wife truly died? A heart attack, Charlotte. They think she died from a heart attack."
"Okay, okay. I am finishing things up with the kids and we will meet again at the Leaky Cauldron. Just don't do anything suspicious or weird, okay?"
"..."
"Andrius. What did you do."
"So I may have ditched John to talk to you. It has been like... twenty minutes?"
"Andrius."
"I mean —"
"Andrius."
"Okay, okay I'm going." Andrius mutters as he pockets the mirror. He sighs as he runs his hands down his face. Guilt was one bloody bastard, and Andrius sucks at taking it.
Stumbling out of the bathroom and hoping no one heard him yelling in the stall, Andrius makes his way back to John. He puts on his charmer smile, hoping he does not look as disheveled as he felt.
"Hey there, mate. Sorry about that weird bathroom thing. I... um... just had to deal with some things. In the bathroom. Yeah. No. That sounds really weird, uh..." Andrius fumbles with his words. Oh, this is not good.
Should he tell him? Should he not? Should he wait for Charlotte to come back? But Charlotte wouldn't say anything, would she? What about Skylar? What about Mika? What if Mariah hadn't died? What —
"Your wife didn't die from a heart attack." Andrius blurts. He slaps his hands across his mouth as he reveals the truth, his eyes widening in horror. He feels like a teenager all over again, constantly a nervous wreck and unable to contain things.
Just then, he hears the jingle of the bar door opening, only to see his wife and the girls walk in. He turns back to John again, panic in his face. Oh bloody hell.

"Hey dude, easy. You alright? You need to—"
'Your wife didn't die from a heart attack.'
And John's whole world went empty again.
Once again, he was on his living room, getting the news. Once again, he was locking himself in his room and throwing away everything against the wall. Crying against her pillow. Mad at her for dying, and at him for insisting in her following her dreams. He should've been selfish for once. He should've convinced her to stay, just one more night. A heart attack in a young woman, filled with life and joy? It was unfair.
Once again, he was making pancakes for his daughter the next morning, thinking about which would be the best way to tell her.
But death just doesn't discriminate between sinners and saints, it just takes and it takes and it takes. And he kept living anyway, against his own will, cause he had a daughter to raise. He still had a piece left of sunshine. He could rise and fall and make his mistakes, but if there was a reason he was still alive when the joy if his life had died, he was willing to wait for it. He'd do whatever it took, he'd make a million of mistakes, but he'd honour his wife in all the possible ways.
And now this random dude was telling him that she didn't die from a heart attack?
Without even noticing the presence of the girls in the doorway, his hands clenched into fists, and his jaw was so clenched he thought his teeth would break any second.
"What." His voice was low. Cold.
"Pa?" Mika's voice came from... somewhere. In this moment, he didn't care. In this moment, his heart was a stone into his chest, tempting him to drown in the river that was slowly growing under his feet. Cause his whole world felt cold without her.
Cause when she died, she took the sun and warm and light with her. And there was nothing that could take her back now.

It was as if the whole atmosphere compressed down on Andrius. One look at John's cold expression told him he had crossed the line. But he needed to tell the truth.
Turning to his wife, he shares a look with her. Charlotte nods once in understanding, already knowing how it could have gone down.
"Come on, my dears! Why don't you two treat yourself to some butter beer and snacks, hm?" Charlotte chirps cheerfully, though her eyes tell a different story. Skylar squints at her parents, and looks to Mika. Something was off.
However, there was little Sky could do as a few galleons, which were definitely way too much, were shoved into her hands. Off and away they were sent, leaving the parents to talk alone.
Charlotte then turns back to Andrius, who has sat down on a stool and ordered three more drinks. They were going to need it, alright.
Inside, Andrius's mind was a jumbled mess. How can he start with a news like this? He looks towards his wife who had since joined them, and gave her a shaky nod. They had to tell him.
"John..." Andrius starts, clearing his throat. "We knew your wife, Mariah Rietveld, from back on our Hogwarts years, and our friendship extended to adulthood. That is how we found out that Mariah died."
Taking a deep breath, Andrius looks into John's eyes. "I know this came out of nowhere, but there is this... force in the wizarding world. It prevents muggles from seeing the true magic, like a veil. A mist of some sort. So when the muggle paramedics and doctors found Mariah, they claimed she died from a heart attack. But that is not the truth. She died from a Basilisk, John. A deadly, venomous snake that lives for hundreds and thousands of years."
Turning back to Charlotte, Andrius hands her the drink. It was her turn to tell the history. Charlotte sighs, appearing to age ten more years. It was a dark time for her.
"I know you are wondering how Mary even came in contact with a Basilisk. However, this is going to be a long story." Charlotte pauses as she turns to John, her expression resolute.
"You must promise whatever secret you heard today, you must not share it. You are a muggle, and that makes knowing about the World of Magic much more dangerous."
Nodding, Andrius slides another drink to John. "You're going to need this. Welcome to the messed up world of wizards, mate. You're one of us now."
———————————————
While the adults begin to talk, Skylar and Mika stand to the side. Their butter beers remain untouched as they glance towards their parents. Skylar shares a look with her friend.
"I'm not the only one thinking that something is going on, am I?" She asks, her eyes never leaving her parents.
"I say we eavesdrop on their conversation. Especially if it is a matter as grave as this."

"Shhh! Let me hear." Mika sat some chairs away from the adults, staying basically behind Skylar's back.
She knew eavesdropping was bad. Very, very bad. She learned it the good and the bad way. After all, that's how she found out about her condition for the first time.
But this was a matter of high need. And she was curious. There was no way she was just gonna sit here and drink a weird drink while a big thing was happening just in front of her eyes.
And so, the girls listened.
———————————————
Well, in summary, everything was a lie.
Mariah met Charlotte during their early years at Hogwarts. It seemed like Charlotte's family life was... ilegally complicated. And she wanted to get out of there. So, Mariah helped her get some information from here and there, until she finally made it out. Yay.
But even after splitting out, the Lantsovs (yeah, a weird family name, but whatever) were still behind her steps. So, Mary helped by being an informant, going from here to there in her travels.
She wasn't just gathering flowers and plants. She was gathering information.
Until, in Greece, Mary and her exploring mates were ambushed by the Lantsovs with a basilisk, killing Mariah in her way.
John had tons of questions. Hell, he had more questions than words right now.
But they all agreed that it was already too late, and the girls needed to come back. Maybe, during the holidays, they could visit the Blue house (or the Hendricks house) and talk a bit more freely.
So, the adults finally stepped up, and Sky quickly pretended to do something else.
———————————————
"So... shall we go?" Charlotte asked, giving Sky one hand.
And John's voice came from behind.
"Skylar. Where's my daughter?"
The room felt suddently tense.
Because, in all their back and forth, no one had noticed the way Mika slipped out.
And, being behind Sky's back, the blue-haired girl couldn't notice.

Skylar looks down at her drink, suddenly incredibly interested in her butter beer. Her mind swims from all the information she had heard. Mika's mother. Missions. Evidence. She had no idea that her parents were living such double lives. How many times have they told her they were going on a business trip, only to investigate her mother's side of the family? Is that why she had to be isolated in the estate? Was that why she never got to interact with her cousins and extended family?
"Skylar. Where's my daughter?"
Shoot. Skylar looks up her drink and comes eye to eye with all three adults. She gulps a bit and glances out of the corner of her eye. Sure enough, Mika had disappeared. Thankfully, Skylar is not as bad as a liar as a father is. Though lying still leaves a bad taste in her mouth, she has no choice right now. Skylar does not want to be at the receiving end of Mr. Hendrick's quiet rage.
Putting up an innocent smile, Skylar politely replies to Mika's father. "Oh, Mika just went to the bathroom real quick. She drank way too much butter beer." She says playfully. "I could go check on her, if you would like."
Turning to make a run for it, Skylar notices her mother's scrutinizing gaze. Skylar may have been able to put up an innocent act, but mother knows all. Nothing can escape her mom, and from how her mother narrows her eyes, Skylar knew she was busted. But thankfully, her mom did not say anything and merely nodded. They were going to have a talk later, but Skylar has somewhere to be right now. Jumping off the stool and walking towards the restroom, she takes one last look at her family and Mika's dad before disappearing through the door and closing it.
The first thing that hits Skylar is the smell. Good Merlin, not even the house elves could save this place. But to be fair, the Leaky Cauldron is a pub. She really could not expect a bar like this to have five-star cleaning services.
The second thing Skylar hears is muffled crying. Mika. Quickly passing the numerous stalls, Skylar reaches the one at the farthest end. The crying was louder, and the stall door was locked. Under the door, Skylar spots a very familiar pair of shoes.
Slowly making her way to the stall, Skylar knocks on the door gently.
"Mika? Is that you?" She asks softly. She leans her back against the wall, originally planning to sit by the door but thinking better of it. Only the ghosts know when this place was last cleaned. Tilting her head, Skylar listens to the sniffling at the other side of the door.
"I'm sorry, I know this is... a lot for you. I didn't know about it either. If you want to talk about it, I'm here."
She herself was still trying to process everything, but Mika must be doing much worst. To learn the cause of your mother's death is still out there must hurt. Skylar wracks her brain for anything, anything that can help Mika.
Gently, she begins to sing. She had took vocal lessons when she was younger, but never sang much except for short tunes or performances. But somehow... it feels appropriate for a time like this.
"Are you, are you coming to the tree?
They strung up a man, they say who murdered three
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree..."

She needed to get out. Get out of there. Get out of the country. Get out.
In her life, she had read and seen lots of things. She read about the Holocaust with details. She read about the Romanov family and the witch huntings. And she was always calm about it.
But the second the words "Mariah", "Basilisk" and "Killed" were put in the same sentence, she suddenly couldn't breathe. Her lungs felt too small for her chest, her heart too big for her body.
She didn't want to be heard, so she wasn't. She just put one foot behind the other, clenching her chest with her hand, trying to keep her heart on her chest. There was a annoying buzzing in her ears, and the lights were too bright, the voices too loud.
She didn't even know how she ended in the restroom. But she locked herself there and the tears started falling.
Dizzy tinglings spinning around, where was the sky? Where was the ground?
Her rabbit came and then, it disappeared.
Pushing forward, falling back, total darkness, a spinning black and suddenly, she couldn't breathe.
She couldn't move. She couldn't think.
It was too much for her. Too much sorrow. And how much pain could a twelve year old hold on her chest?
'Breathe' said her dad in her head. 'Breathe' said her mom. But was it her mom, or just another liar?
Breathe.
But she couldn't. She was choking in her own air. She was drowning in hell, looking at heaven.
And then, a voice took her out of the ninth circle.
Singing.
A familiar tune. A familiar voice.
Sky. Her best friend. Her savior. The other victim.
And all of a sudden, she could breathe again. She could think. The voices lowered their tone. The lights weren't so bright.
She could breathe. And her heart was still on her place.
And out of nowhere, she opened the door and launched herself into Skylar's arms. Hugging her.
Hugging her like she never hugged her father after they got the news. Hugging her like she had never hugged anyone before.
Like her life depended on it. And, in some way, it did.
And she cried in her shoulder. She cried and whined, and finally, after two years, she allowed herself to grieve her mother.

Skylar holds Mika tight as she grieves. Her friend has never been one to display her emotions openly, so it only makes it even more necessary for Skylar to be there for her. How long has Mika locked these feelings inside of her? Skylar could only imagine the pain she is going through as sobs wracked her body. She continues to hum softly in Mika's ear, hoping her gentle tunes can help her friend's sorrow.
Alas, the harsh crying turns into quiet sniffles as Mika calms down. Skylar rubs comforting circles on her friend's back, her voice still singing a familiar melody. They would have to leave soon if they do not want their parents to worry, but she can care less about that right now. A strong feeling of protectiveness surges within Skylar. Mika needs this, and she will fight to give her friend the happiness she deserves.
Suddenly, the bathroom door opens. Skylar feels Mika stiffen in her arms and quickly gestures her into the stall, locking the door. They stand quietly against the wall, listening to whoever came in. A familiar voice rings out from down the hallway.
"Skylar? Mikaela? Are you girls in here?"
Skylar freezes as she hears her mom walk closer. Eventually, Charlotte stops right in front of the bathroom stall they were in. She notices the two pairs of feet from under the door and scrunches her brows.
"What are you girls doing in here?"
Skylar turns to Mika and asks for silent permission. She was going to have to confront her mom, because she definitely cannot lie. She will deal with her mom, Mika just needs to give herself time. After getting a small nod from Mika, Skylar opens the bathroom stall, coming face to face with her mom.
"When were you going to tell us you knew Mika's mom?"
Charlotte freezes at her daughter's question. Emotions swirl within Skylar's eyes — determination, betrayal, hurt, and most of all, protectiveness. Her eyes drift to the figure behind her daughter. Mikaela's eyes were red and puffy, evidence of her crying. They knew.
"Well? How can you keep this from us! You and dad were living double lives this whole time and I knew nothing about it. And Mika's mother died from a Basilisk? Don't you think she deserved to know? What the bloody hell were you all doing for all of this to happen?" Skylar raises her voice as anger courses in her. Charlotte looks at her daughter sadly. She had never seen her child so irate before. She does not even correct Skylar's language. Her little girl, so happy and bright, has every right to be angered now.
"I am sorry we did not tell you this, dear. To both of you." Charlotte addresses, nodding to Mikaela. Not only has she hurt her daughter by keeping this from her, she also hurt her friend. She and Andrius failed as parents die to their lies, and it is up to them to make it right.
"You girls are still so young. You should not be burdened by the harsh reality of this, but you also need to know the truth. We will tell you both everything once we get to a more enclosed area. The secrets and information we bear are not for the public." She says solemnly.
"But you two must promise not to do anything rash. Once you know the information we do, you may want to take matters into your own hands. But do not, I repeat, do not. It will only cause you both more pain and danger. Can I trust you two?"
Skylar looks into her mother's eyes and nods once. She sees Mika do the same, though still remaining quiet. Charlotte sighs tiredly at the girls before holding out her hand. "Let's go home now. You girls need to go back to Hogwarts soon. We can reconvene over summer to discuss more."
