Contemplating Absurdity

After an uneventful day of classes Thomas wanted to spend some time in the library. It was a place he frequented quite a bit, sometimes to study, sometimes to do his homework, especially when he had to write essays, the books here were a real treasure trove of knowledge. Not that he ever expected the contrary, of course it was a school library after all. On rarer occasions though, Thomas enjoyed picking books at random, without any specific pattern or thought behind his selection. If he was lucky, he’d find an interesting read, and if luck wasn’t on his side well, he’d just put the book back in place and read another one.
Today was one of these days, his homework had already been taken care of and he didn’t feel behind in his studies, so he figured reading books wasn’t the worst thing to do with his time. Maybe he’ll actually read something interesting this time. He could still remember his previous unlucky streak of legal texts and that treatise on muggle artefacts. Ugh. That thing was pure conjecture, why bother asking muggles about the function of their items when you can make up the most inane stories? That might be the only time wizards write fiction...
With a sigh, Thomas entered the library and headed straight to the bookshelves. He passed by the entrance of the Restricted section, and as usual he wondered if he would ever have a reason to go there. Probably not this year, I don’t think they’d let a first year student go without a very good reason that couldn’t be circumvented. Oh well, it’s not my destination anyway. Distracted by his thoughts, he ended up in front of a shelf without any idea of the contents of the books it housed. That would do perfectly, he thought. Then, he grabbed a book at random book, and without looking at it’s cover he turned on his heels, ready to find somewhere to sit.
He settled on a table a bit farther away from the entrance. Curfew was approaching so he didn’t want to waste time choosing a table. The place wasn’t unoccupied, as a young girl with dark brown hair was sitting there already. As he didn’t know her, he chose to sit on the opposite side of the table, from there he had a better look of her face, and found her most notable feature to be her green eyes. They kinda look cat-like. She was reading the Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus, Thomas wasn’t familiar with the author but he knew the tale pretty well, all thanks to his father.
“The Myth of Sisyphus, huh? Cheating death twice only to end up in Tartarus…” he whispered.

Thomas chuckled a bit hearing that. Being happy pushing a boulder for all eternity? That’s a bit hard to imagine, I’d be miserable… or more likely, I’d go mad. Still, I guess that’s what hubris does to people… He thought himself smarter than the gods only for fate to catch up to him. Being happy pushing a rock for the remainder of eternity would certainly have broken a man like that. He gave a non-committal shrug.
“Hmm… it could be. Maybe pushing rocks is actually nice? Not that I would know." He let out a low chuckle at that. "Do you think he’s happy doing that?”
Still, this was just a story, his fate had been sealed from the very beginning. Maybe he born was to cheat Death, only to be punished. Or maybe he did defy his fate, yet didn’t have the power to keep it at bay? That was a mystery only the author could answer.
“Even if it’s just fiction, as far as the characters are concerned, their fate is very much real. So stories walk the line between truth and fiction, and that to me is much more interesting.” He looked up, and met her gaze, mirroring what she had done earlier.
“I mean, are we the readers, or just another set of characters on a page?”
That question had always fascinated him, he liked to believe he was real, by all accounts, he felt very much real, yet… Yet he knew how easily the senses could be deceived. And once you start questioning that, you question everything. That leads to comparisons, to ways of trying to make sense of things, and stories were the closest thing he could think of. The one certainty in a story was it’s plot, and when he map that onto life, it always brought him back to fate.
Fate. Some people think it’s already written, set in stone and immutable. Others say it’s a set of junctions and as an individual you are able to make some choices, to head down a certain path. Finally, some are convinced that there is no such thing.
Maybe it’s because a predetermined fate strips life of meaning. Is a choice really a choice? Or maybe it’s because their like is miserable and they can’t accept it? Thomas had to admit, there was something… comforting about it. But right now he was more interested in what the girl had to say.

The conversation had been going for longer than Thomas thought, so much so that the bell rang. Curfew, huh? I never opened the book, I wonder what it was about? He had set it down upside down, so he flipped it over to read it’s title. The Esoteric Uses of Muggle Artefacts, by Artemius Higgenbottom. Looks like I dodged a bullet there, it’s probably a bunch of nonsense written by some arrogant idiot who thinks Muggles are barbarians living in mud hovels. I should put it away. And never look at it if I can help it. Ugh.
Later that night, a meteor shower was supposed to happen, and so the school set up a viewing event. The opportunity was rare, so Thomas had signed up for it without any hesitation. He needed to go to the entrance hall to join the other participants, still he thought it was a shame to end the conversation there. Maybe she’s also going? Well, I better ask. “I’m going to the meteor shower viewing event in a few minutes. I just need to return that book, and then I’m heading to the entrance hall. If you’re up to it we could continue our conversation there?” Without waiting for an answer, he went to return the book to it’s rightful place.
