Reyna felt like she was dying. Not in the dramatic sense people joked about, but really truly. Her body refused to cooperate with her. Each breath she took, her chest ached. Each step she took, her legs shook. Each time she swallowed, her mouth burned. Sounds of coughing echoed her bedroom over and over again and tissues littered the floors, crumpled and forgotten. This was not a healthy environment to be living in.
She was glad she didn’t have a roommate this year. Not that she could have handled one anyway. The noise, the questions, it would have been too much. That wasn’t her anymore, not since her grandpa died.
Her grandpa had been a huge part of her life. He had been the one who taught her how to heal.
And now he was gone. She wished he was alive now. She had felt this same strong feeling this entire summer. But this Valentine’s Day the feeling was so much more stronger. If he were here, he would know what she should do.
Reyna glanced toward the door. The Hospital Wing wasn’t far. Someone there could fix this, quickly, easily. But she didn’t move. Part of her wanted to get better. Another part… didn’t.
Staying here, and suffering, felt easier than trying. Easier than facing people. Easier than pretending she was okay.
But in her head a part of her screamed to get up, to get out, to go to the Hospital Wing or better yet heal herself. Get up. Do something. It was like she was having an internal debate with herself. But finally her thoughts won.
Her hand moved almost on its own, reaching for the journal beside her bed. It was always there. This journal had been with her through the ups and downs these past six months. Reyna flipped through the journal and finally found what she was looking for, a particular potion that would help her recover. First the Pepperup Potion then the Cough Potion. That would fix whatever she had right now.
Reyna stared at the page for a long moment. All she had to do… was try. It took longer than it should have to convince herself. Minutes then hours, she lost track of time, her thoughts circling through the same things again and again and again. He would want you to do this.
He wouldn’t have wanted her to drown in misery. He would’ve wanted her to move on. He would have wanted her to do this. That was all Reyna needed to get up.
She slowly lifted herself up from her bed. Just one step at a time. One step forward. One more step. Each step she took her head throbbed. Pain shot up in her legs from not moving for so long. Her chest ached. Her muscles were weak. Her breath was ragged. Everything hurt. But she made it out of her room. That thought remained in her head. He would have wanted her to do this.
She kept going out of her room, to the corridors. She could have turned toward the Hospital Wing. She didn’t. If she went there, someone else would fix it. Someone else would take over. And maybe that would be easier. But it wouldn’t be hers.
Part of her didn't know why she was doing this. Why wasn’t she just going straight to the Hospital Wing? Someone could heal her there. But no. She wanted to do it herself. She wanted to do it the hard way.
She wanted to struggle, because it felt like the only thing she had left of him. Of what he had taught her. So she chose the harder path. Even if it hurt. Even if it was reckless. Even if she was clearly stupid. Even if it didn’t work.
She would get what she needed. Brew it herself. And prove to him, to herself, to everyone out there, that she wasn't broken, even though she felt like she was.
Maybe this would fix her. Help her go back to normal. And she had to take that chance, that risky leap to find her happiness again. Just for the chance to feel that sense of warmth she felt before. No one else could understand it, but she did it anyway.
She kept walking.

This Valentine's wasn't as eventful as the previous one. She couldn't spend it with Quentin, but she prepared a gift with a letter to send. And there was another gift. For her bestie. There was not much Linda could do for Reyna and she knew it. That talking in Tenūsa meant more to her than she could ever admit. That trust shared that day was the answer to unspoken question, as well as a promise.

She was returning from owlery when she decided to walk a little in the corridors. A gift for Reyna was a simple bracelet with a small notebook, filled with different things connected to healing. She didn't expect it to be anywhere as good as journal that Reyna had from her grandfather, but that was fine. She didn't intend on replacing him or what he left to her bestie. This was just a handmade gift with her personal discovery that she wanted to share.

Suddenly something felt very wrong and it made her stop. Looking around she saw a girl who didn't look like feeling well. It took her a second to realize that it was the very person she was thinking about now. Almost dropping the gift she was holding, Linda made quick steps to come closer to Reyna.

Rey? You don't look good. Where are you going? Worry, only worry and no angriness filled her voice. Judging by the little she could see, Reyna wasn't going to Hospital Wing. So what place was more important now? It looks like you can fall any second. Let me accompany you. Just tell me where are we going? Reckless decision? Definitely. She should just take Reyna to the hospital. Somewhere where she will be looked at and cared about. Her knowledge could offer some help, but it was better to let nurse to handle it. Yet there was something that made her just offer company. Someone to rely on. Someone who could catch if Reyna was going to fall. Will Linda regret it? She didn't know. She could always just drag her bestie to the hospital wing. But she wanted to see where Rey was going. What did she want to do? What was keeping her moving now as it looked like she was suffering at least from weak muscles and something with breathing.

She looked at Reyna's eyes, waiting for the moment when and if her bestie would look at her. I understand the pain. I am here to help, not to stop you so long as I don't have to lose you. The silent unspoken words could be seen in her eyes. She will not lose another best friend. That would be too much. And as time spent together with Rey was more than time with that bestie, Linda knew this one would hurt even more. She wasn't ready. I absolutely can't afford to lose you. Just a whisper. Spoken softly but there was something about it. Feelings behind this simple sentence were filled with pain. And she made a decision. Linda will walk with Rey wherever she was going to. But the moment Li would think that they must go to the hospital wing, she would do everything to get her bestie to the nurse.

Reyna only made a short walk up from her dorm in Hufflepuff before she was stopped by a familiar voice. But she couldn't stop now. Not when she was so close. She continued to walk hoping that Linda would not follow. Any other day, she would have loved to spend with her best friend. But today, that was not the case. She wanted to be alone. She wanted to do this. These were dangerous thoughts, wanting to push away her best friend. She had been there before, and she had finally opened up about it in January. It had only been a month and a half since that conversation. Still it felt like eternity.
"Rey? You don't look good. Where are you going?" Linda asked. Reyna could feel the warmth radiating off her skin. She knew for a fact that she looked like a mess. Reyna had only bothered to change her clothes into something... decent and pull her hair into a messy bun. Any other self care, was beyond her energy level.
Where was she going however? Honestly, Reyna didn't know. To the courtyard? For some fresh air? To the potions room? For a potion to brew? To the Herbology classroom? For some herbs? One of those places. But there was no answer that she could give Linda that would make any sense. Would she understand?
"It looks like you can fall any second. Let me accompany you. Just tell me where are we going?" Linda pressed once again. Let me accompany you. Those words rang in her head. Her best friend wasn't going to give up on her. Part of her jumped from joy, but the other screamed for her to go away. She tried to find the words, to say something, anything, but it was too difficult. But as she continued to walk, she slowed her pace down, so she could walk next to her best friend.
Glancing up at her for the first time, she something in Linda's eyes. Maybe it was a look of concern, or of understanding, Reyna didn't know. But the only thing she could manage was the smallest of smiles before she looked down again.
The final words that Linda said were so soft that if Reyna had been a touch further, she would have missed them: "I absolutely can't afford to lose you." Maybe she did understand. Maybe she could understand her pain. Reyna had lost friends. Many of them over the years. Some had died, some had disappeared. Reyna had just lost her grandpa. And although it was six months ago, it felt so much worse than anything. She wasn't over it now, and she couldn't imagine that she would ever get over it. She could only hope that she would slowly feel a little better.
But there was something she could never imagine losing and she prayed with all the life in her that she would never lose. Her best friend.
"Me too," she replied softly. Glancing up at Linda again, she whispered, "You won't lose me." But there was a thought that lingered in her head. Linda would never lose her. Ever. As long as Reyna didn't lose herself.
