"'The Great Lake of Hogwarts - home to the giant squid, sometimes spotted sunning its tentacles near the surface.' Odd...are giant squid also endothermic like their mundane relatives? It would make sense...at least as much sense as possible for comparing mundane and magical creatures."
Emil tilted their head curiously as they read the note they'd taken in their journal earlier that day and wondered aloud. The giant squid was one of the reasons why the Great Lake was one of the most mysterious places in the entire school, and the littlest Scovich was eager to take a proper look into it. After all, if they found something useful or at least important to note for safety, then perhaps some of those stubborn first-year nerves would finally ease up. Maybe they could even find some hazard and keep other students safe!
...or they could also potentially trip, tumble into the cold Lake, and get nibbled on by one of its many inhabitants. That was also a distinct possibility that made the hairs on the back of Emil's neck stand up. However, that would just have to be an acceptable hazard!
Emil nodded and began walking along the edge of the lake, looking around for anything of interest.

Olivia was merely taking a light stroll taking in the beauty of the castle and its grounds. Olivia loved to explore and there was still so much left to discover, however during this walk she had somehow ended up at the great lake which she often used as an escape from reality when she needed a break.
She loved to watch the water ripple before her and catch the faintest glimpse of the unknown creatures that lay beneath the surface. She stood near the edge looking in waiting for anything to suprise her. She had yet to see the tentacles of the giant squid that everyone had spoke about.
Then a thought crossed her mind, a reckless thought but a thought nonetheless. What if I made the giant squid show itself to me, no one has managed to see the face of the squid, well no first year to be precise. Now she needed someone filled with the same curiosity to help her out, it was far too dangerous to do alone.
She spotted a boy with red hair that you couldn't miss, a fellow Hufflepuff student in her year not far from where she stood who had also taken an intrest in the great lake. What a perfect coincidence, this was definitely a sign from the universe telling her to to go for it.
She slowly made her way over to the boy, "Hey, I'm Olivia," she introduced, "The lake is quite magical if not creepy," she commented looking at it once more. "Fancy doing something risky?" she asked with a sweet smile hoping he would say yes.

Emil nearly stumbled and went tumbling as the sudden new voice snapped their concentration on observations. The red-head turned to see - oh...another Hufflepuff! She seemed friendly enough, and she wasn't immediately bombarding Emil with questions about what they were doing, writing in their journal while slowly meandering around the Great Lake.
'Hey, I'm Olivia.'
Olivia...that name sounded familiar. Did they share a class together? Wait - if she was a first-year, then they would definitely share classes. What a silly thing to question! Perhaps Emil just needed to pay more attention to putting names to faces, especially in their own House.
Emil then seemed to realize that a couple seconds had passed, and they quickly made to rectify the potential poor manners with an introduction.
"H-Hello...I'm Emil. It's nice to meet you."
As far as 'doing something risky' went, Emil tilted their head in concerned confusion.
"Um...might I ask what exactly you have in mind? There's quite a lot of things that are 'risky' here."
What was this young woman planning? Her smile put Emil slightly more at ease, but the sudden introductions and the idea of going off on a misadventure without preparations was a bit worrying in its own right.

"Come on loosen up," Olivia said as she saw the worry on his face. "I'm only suggesting we try and lure the giant squid to reveal itself to us," she informed acting as though it was a common everyday task. She knew it was dangerous, it might even land them in trouble if they didn't end up in the hospital wing or worse both. However, she really wanted Emil to say yes, so acting as though it was a easy experiment instead of a risky one may make him be more inclined to accept.
She looked him up and down trying to figure out his response before he had given it, she had definitely seen him around, in lessons and in the common room. The red hair was hard to miss but she had never spoken to him. He always seemed to be jotting things down in his journal and therfore came across a little nerdy making him an unlikely friend but that perception of him could very well change.
"I know squids are attracted to light," She began as she looked back over at the lake, hoping that by talking about it he might get intrested and start sharing his thoughts which would result in him automatically becoming involved with the experiment. The only problem was that she didnt know how to preform Lumos as of yet. "Do you know how to preform Lumos?" she asked, hoping he did, but if not they would have to figure out another way to create a huge light source.
