Day 1 - Morning slot
The round was quieter, mostly. That tended to happen when two of the duellists had their normal tongue functionality replaced with that of a pretzel. Quiet was still a relative term because there was still a Confringo involved -- did senior duellists regularly need some spell or potion for their hearing? Aislin would have to look into that later, when she wasn't in the middle of a job. Even without Kim and Jack able to cast, there was a lot going on.

Ara, the solo caster on her team for the moment (and soon for the rest of the duel), tried to knock Kim over with a classic Flipendo. Unluckily for her, Kim had very little else to do but track every shift of her wand, every dart of her eyes, so he was very ready to move out of the way, and just in time to regain control of his tongue.

Rose was trying to support Evelynn in her offensive with a tricky Slippery Jinx (an Aislin-approved tactic!). But emphasis on trying. In a stroke of comedic misfortune, the banana peel-like effect summoned under her own feet, catching her off guard and sending her down hard on her butt. No real harm done physically, but her reputation might suffer from that one. Aislin at least was doing her job as a very serious moderator and not laughing out of slight shock.

All of that was fluff for the real moment. Once again it was Evelynn with the brutal, to-the-point cast. She incanted the aforementioned ear-splitting Blasting Curse, and Jack went down. "Stop!" Huh, she couldn't hear herself as clearly as last time she said that. Maybe she needed to track down some ear-healing magic. She was kind of sad to see Jack go, if he had more time maybe he could have gotten the spell spread to work. But he and Hanako seemed like good friends, so maybe it would be nice to wake up together.

With Jack off the duelling stage, that just left Ara and a whole team of Gryffindors. Maybe she would forfeit now? Evelynn was right that it might be the smarter move to quit while you were still on your feet, just like Maisie had offered in Aislin's first duel, but she thought she'd rather be the sort of person that stuck it out. The choice wasn't hers today, though.

That sheepish smile and shrug were met with a dismissing shrug of Evelynn's own brow. Steadfast stubbornness was not the positive trait so many seemed to think it was. In fact, in a castle where shadows stalked and the scales were historically imbalanced, it was more likely to get yourself hurt and others killed. She'd had to learn that lesson more than once, herself, before it finally stuck. Unfortunately, it meant that she now had very little patience for those who put on a false bravado in a situation that was so clearly irreconcilable.

The thump of a limp body hitting the floor moments later once the dust of her spell settled served to sooth the simmering disappointment. "And then there was one..." she murmured, lidded gaze panning from the unconscious figure as he was cleared from the piste to the only remaining opposition. "Allow me to offer a lesson that your teammates seemed not to understand." Her words were carefully enunciated. Yet despite being spoken with an intent to leave an impression, her expression betrayed no animosity or anger.

"There is nothing brave or valiant in a fool's pursuit. Wisdom presents in the recognition of defeat. Courage comes in accepting your position in its inevitability. And respect of your opponent is demonstrated by following through with a resignation. To do anything else projects the sentiment that your opponents' time is worthless and yourself as foolhardy." She paused momentarily to ensure the notion left its mark.

"I have no desire to harm you, and this match concluded some time ago. If you seek additional practice or experience, I will make myself available to assist you. But for now...I implore you to withdraw."

Kim felt bad for Ara. He knew the feeling from the past. But there wasn't much he could do to help her, without messing with his own team and that would never happen. Kim liked winning. Who didn't? Plus, he did have a loyalty thing when it came to those he worked with, he wouldn't betray anyone he gave his trust to. The dueling team was something that was important to him and the two with him were also important, even if he didn't put it into words. Even Gryffindor House, Kim had never thought to belong to, it was growing on him too. But of course, again he wouldn't admit this to anyone out loud. Not being able to speak wasn't really bad for someone like Kim, he liked being quiet anyway. But for chatterboxes it would be the worst hell. Or even just people who liked to talk often. Eve managed to hit with her spell, no surprise there!, and took Jack out with her final blow. Rose ended up having her spell backfire on her and slipped, falling on her butt. There had been so many critical failures this match, it was nuts! He'd never seen this happen before. Or maybe it had before but he just hadn't been around to witness it. He'd have to ask later.

Ara tried to cast Kim's favorite spell at him but it was easy to avoid the spell. After all, it was his favorite one and cast by a dongsaeng (동생) (close younger person). He felt honored to have been the one to be chosen by Ara since Rose was a little less adept at evading than him. But at last his tongue suddenly loosened and Kim realized he could talk again! But instead of celebrating by instantly speaking, he didn't say anything because there wasn't much point. Hana and Jack were unconscious and Ara was just barely hanging on now. The only things he could say were words that might sound like pity, sarcastic ones and cruel ones. None of which he wanted to direct at Ara right now. Well, at least the match would be over soon. Then she could rest either conscious or unconscious and Kim would go to see how Hana was doing after this. But when Eve spoke, advising Ara to forfeit, Kim looked over at her again and offered her a slight smile and a little nod in her direction.

Jack didn't even try to stop them this time. Even if Rose's spell hadn't backfired on her and she had made the floor under her opponent slippery, rather than herself, it wouldn't have mattered. Rose jumped back to her feet as quick as possible, the jinx not lasting very long on the piste under her. Jack had been hit anyway, fair and square with Evelynn's spell, and now only the youngest duelist remained.

Evelynn had a point, Rose had to admit, as she coaxed the girl into giving up. She was right- there was no different outcome in the duel whether she lost by passing out or forfeiting. The logical choice would have been to give up before Jack was out and accept their defeat and minimal injuries. Ara was already looking rough, and Rose couldn't help but feel a little bit bad for her. She didn't have any desire to hurt the girl, either.

She was glad, at least, that now Evelynn's words had some bite behind them as well as bark, as it was clear to all the participants and any onlookers who the winners of the duel would be. Rose didn't know what she would do in her place, if she was honest with herself. There was a bruise to one's ego either way, with the humility of a forfeit or the humility of passing out and ending up in the Hospital Wing.

What Rose did know that one way or another, this duel had to end, and there would be no mercy from the lions if Ara refused.

Slytherin forfeits.
14th February 2026
Day 1 - Morning slot
Things weren't looking good for Ara. Her chances of winning this for Slytherin were as slim as an inchworm, or possibly even slimmer. And clearly Evelynn had thought far more about when someone should forfeit than Aislin had; the seventh year talked for long enough that she wondered if she should pull out a notepad and quill. It was unclear how much Ara was actually listening to the whole thing, but she did muster a truly impressive eye roll in the direction of Jack's body being carried off the stage with a force likely unachievable by anyone but a fourth year with two seventh years teammates who had gone down first. Then she signalled for a forfeit, and Aislin nodded quickly.

"Slytherin forfeits, so Gryffindor wins." She climbed up onto the stage to make herself taller for the audience, and sort of the duellists as well, though they were all still eye level with the airspace over her head. "That was some really good casting!" Aislin sounded less like a moderator giving a passing compliment and more like a burgeoning fan. Realizing this, she cleared her throat and nodded. "Well. Go get checked by the healers and... have a nice day?"
A WIN FOR GRYFFINDOR!
