Experiment #008: 'Impromptu Socialization'

Emil was not, as some people would put it, 'exceedingly cautious.' Yes, they made sure to wear gloves and stood the minimum safe distance away from any dangerous plants...but technically, a slender branch they'd found was not considered a body part and thus was perfectly safe to use!
At least, that was Emil's logic, and it allowed for them to test an idea after Herbology class - and it mayhaps involved gently poking some of the bubotuber plants in different places. First the leaves, then the roots, and then - with all of the slightly shivery finesse and gentleness the young Scovich could bring to bear - at the slug-like central body.
"Hmm...interesting - barely any pus gathers in the leaves as opposed to the main 'fruiting' body. Why? Is the pus a byproduct? But then why wouldn't it be in the leaves as well as the main body - surely the plant has a way to cycle nutrients and water. Is there some purpose for the pus to gather there? How odd..."
Emil was neither particularly gifted nor ignorant to Herbology - but they were young, eager to learn, and trying very, VERY hard not to damage any of the bubotubers during their observations. A task that required their full attention...and leaving none left to keep track of who had actually left the greenhouse.

Herbology was one of the few classes at Hogwarts that didn't completely rack Cirrus' brain. Essentially, it was just gardening with a sprinkle of magic, and she thought herself to have a bit of a green thumb, as evident by the thriving tomato vines in her garden back home. She wasn't overly keen on plants, but she knew her way around a pot and spade. Even if sometimes the plants bit back, she believed that tending to these plants would tend to her in return.
Cirrus had stayed a short while after class to speak with the professor, just for some homework clarification - and to promptly avoid the flood of students that plagued the halls directly after classes, she'd wait for the crowd to clear up prior to getting on with the rest of her day - before she'd languidly returned to her working station and packed up her things. On her way out of the greenhouse, she'd heard clatters and muttering. Naturally, she'd mind her own business, but she could hear every word being uttered for this person would not know subtly if it bit them in the behind. The air also had the cheeky tendency to carry sounds where they were not meant to be heard. She'd silently and inquisitively followed the sound of introspection and spotted the scruff of radiant red hair; they were impossible to miss. What is that person doing...? Poking a poor bubotuber with a stick, it seemed. Cirrus almost rolled her eyes; she knew the pus was hazardous and she could only see this going wrong in a dozen ways.
Fresh off the boat from the muggle-world Cirrus would have simply not meddled. But she'd been at Hogwarts long enough now to have overcome part of her disdain for people - almost every interaction she'd had with wizards had been friendly, some more profound than others - she'd still choose sweet solitude over socialisation, but this person was asking questions in which she had a vague idea of the answer. Her reclusive tendencies were deafened by her desire to help. And, perhaps, to knock some common sense into this person to not poke an irritant plant in all the wrong places.
Cirrus still had the oppressing hand of social awkwardness on weighing heavily on her shoulder as she stepped forward to make herself known, ignoring her dull anxieties when she spoke. "Defense mechanism." She stated, quiet and concise. "Would you not keep your sharpest weapon close to the most vulnerable and valuable part of yourself?" She trained her blank stare on the person, not judging or perceiving, but as a watchful presence.
"Also, I really wouldn't do that if I were you."

“Ack!”
The voice behind Emil made them both jolt upright and turn, their ‘safety equipment’ in the form of the stick falling with a soft clatter to the greenhouse floor. Oh dear, did this Bubotuber belong to someone else’s experiment? What if someone thought Emil was trying to sabotage them?! What if—
Emil paused when they finally turned and saw the person across from them, their face already flushing a little bit as the anxiety spike leveled out. It certainly did not fade entirely, though.
“Oh! Um…is this one yours? I’m sorry, I didn’t intend to cause any harm.”
Emil became painfully aware of how stupid that sounded. Also, this fellow student had given an answer to some of their questions — wait, was Emil now being rude by not acknowledging that? Dear Merlin, they needed to pull themself together!
“I, um…I prefer protecting all of my personhood, personally. If the sap is defensive, why store it in the mass that appears the least appealing? I understand pests and other creatures may not share similar tastes to people, but…surely even they don’t find this particular part of the plant that appetizing, yes? The fact that none of the pus is in the leaves just…just seems quite odd, you see?”
Every word felt like Emil was digging a deeper and deeper hole. After another moment of silence — a drawn out eternity in the young redhead’s mind — they smiled anxiously and waved.
“Hello, by the way.”
Wait, blast it all! Names! Introductions needed names first, right?
“I’m Emil.”
The Hufflepuff made a point to look over both the young woman across from them as well as the rest of the greenhouse, checking to see if they’d made a scene.

This was her favourite class. Herbology, since growing up doing gardening there was nothing more than just learning about plants. Almost thought she'd be a botanist or running her own apothecary business but she had other interests too which made her conflicted between being in Culinary or Herbology. Either way still was her favourite class.
But a conversation made way to her height hearing for ears as she noticed two students colliding.
She checked the ruckus going on. It was well a Hufflepuff, two puffs of Hufflepuffs to be exact and they seem to be doing some monkey business with the herbs. If they were in muggle school they'd be hearing from the teacher Angel thought it was the same here. With her swift feet she went towards the two and leaned a bit forward.
Her intuition was right. The Hufflepuff boy who she heard introduced himself to the girl awhile before she came. His name was Emil. Fitting name she thought. Anyways she wanted to gently let the boy know what he was doing was dangerous for the safety of others and for himself.
Clearing her throat she raised a question for the Hufflepuffs.
"Excuse me? What seems to be the pro—" cutting herself off she immediately noticed the little concoction going on. Yeah he's a daredevil in the wrong place.
"I don't think doing this will get you very far. Bubotubers are very reactive and their pus can be very bad if not handled correctly." she said informing
The stick clanked towards the white floors and she sighed.
"You're fine just practice safety please, or as I who grew up in a muggle household "Lab Safety" one of the first things you've should've been taught in Science or Herbology to be precise." Angel says with a little swiss with her voice
"Name's Angel. Angel Dayes!" she smiled
Hopefully sense got knocked into him to being much safer for himself and others.

Did Fawkes enjoy Herbology? Well she couldn't say she loved it as much as some of her other classes but she didn't hate it that's for sure. She could keep a plant alive at least that's for certain. But she'd rather spend her time on her star maps than plants.
She was slightly sleepy after the class. Having stayed up most of the night meant no energy for the day. As she walked back towards the castle she noticed the group of students near the bubotuber plants. She recognised the girls, Cirrus and Angel but not the other hufflepuff with them. Honestly she should have just gone back to the castle but curiosity got the better of her.
She watched as the girls were telling the other hufflepuff about the dangers of the plant. They seemed very insistent on continuing their 'experiment' as they called it.
What in the world are you all doing- She asked looking extremely confused. and why are y'all near bubotuber plants of all things? She looked at the plants as she said this. She moved slightly back to make sure she wasn't near the pus. Just for safety she told herself as she noticed the stick on the ground.

Having made enough of a spectacle to attract the attention of one fellow student without warning had already put Emil on the back foot — but three? THREE?!
The red-headed Hufflepuff looked as if they wanted nothing more than to clamber under one of the tables and hide like a frightened cat. However, that would probably be considered rude. Or would it? Perhaps Emil could concoct a lie and say they needed to find a missing glove — except the young Scovich was already wearing their gloves. Oh, what to do, what to say?
It seemed to take a solid thirty seconds for Emil to remember that someone was offering a hand to shake. They carefully took off their gloves and timidly shook Angel Dayes hand, their eyes bouncing between her and the other two.
“E-Emil. Emil Scovich. And I…I, um, I was doing observations for a potential experiment. I-It’s similar to something I tried at home before Hogwarts. I didn’t know if this Bubotuber belonged to anyone, so I didn’t want to risk touching it and ruining someone else’s hard work, but…but I needed to observe it and its structure to see if I could supplement my notes. Other gardening tooks looked quite sharp and pointy and like they could damage it. Thus the…”
They gestured, weak and yet persistent, to the fallen stick on the ground.
“Thus my choice in tools.”

Ah, great. More people. Cirrus only wanted to subtly nudge this person away from calamity, not attract a crowd. She doesn't know why she's surprised anymore; it's Hogwarts, the walls have eyes and ears. Literally. Portraits were sentient. Other people knew your thoughts before you'd even thought them, it was often frightening really... All the more reason why she didn't share her name, she'd prefer to remain unknown to avoid any sentimental run-ins in the midst of the corridors. She already knew Fawkes, but they weren't close enough for Cirrus to offer any more grandeur than a little wave. But neither Fawkes nor Angel were the subject of her attention.
Behind every half-baked plan was a nervous wreck, who, in this case, took the form of a particular red head situated across from Cirrus. Their skittish demeanour reminded her like that of a baby deer caught in the scope of a hunter, expecting them to bolt at any moment. Who wouldn't? Three people suddenly imposing on you while you're doing something probably questionable to the wandering eye can't be too kind on one's heartrate. Cirrus intended to make quick work of this then leave so, if Emil were to get some of the pus on them (which she thought to be highly likely with their jitters), Cirrus would not be a scapegoat when they had to visit the infirmary. Not that she'd immediately assume the worst of people. No... she would.
Cirrus ignored the other two and focused on Emil, speaking once more. "I really don't see how a stick is intended to be less damaging to the plant." A pause, peering beyond Emil and at the bubotuber that was viciously secreting pus as if it were irritated. For being riddled with anxiety, this Emil Scovich didn't seem too concerned with safety. Cirrus was just trying to help. "But perhaps you should direct your curiosity elsewhere? I'm sure a textbook has all the answers to your questions..."

The Hufflepuff girl who looked like sunshine seemed to take things under control. Looking over to the Hufflepuff, he could've been a Gryffindor if she hadn't took a closer look. Angel simply whispered a full sentence with oh, a few languages she knew.
"Oh là là, sana hindi siya kinakabahan. Byddai'n drueni, he seemed to be having fun." she whispered under her breath, which meant fully in english, Oh dear, I hope he's not nervous. It'd be a shame, he seemed to be having fun. Her gaze meeting Emil's again. Walking up to him Angel wanted to let the boy know he did nothing wrong, and that maybe she would become friends with him. Along with the other Hufflepuff girl. Hufflepuffs were cool and awesome. Much more it would be a breath of fresh air for her. Never had she ever really making connections with her badger classmates, she wanted to ask which was as shot in the dark. She couldn't read their minds but she hoped they accepted her offer.
"You know, you seem like a nice lad, how about it? Want to be friends?" she turned to him with her swiss voice
"How about you guys?" Angel asked the Hufflepuff girl. She didn't know if they even wanted to be friends but Angel wanted to be friends with any houses here, and defiantly making friends outside her house. Angel saw Emil without gloves, so to her initiative, got a pair of thick gloves, and picked up his stick. Giving him a pair of new tools to handle the plant safely.

#6397b0 I'm Fawkes. She said raising her hand with a slight wave. She watched the hufflepuff try to explain their experimentation on the bubotuber plants. Technically she began, the plants belong to the greenhouses. Either way its still dangerous.
She glanced over as Cirrus suggested using a textbook instead. Well still Fawkes could understand why Emil tried to experiment themselves. Its more effective to verify your suspicions with your own experiments rather than blindly trusting a textbook but at the same time in order to conduct experiments one needs to ensure proper safety. Bubotuber plants were not what she would consider safe. At least with how limited their knowledge on them was.
When Angel asked to be friends Fawkes was hesitant at first considering their past history. But she wasn't the type of person to hold such minor grudges so she just shrugged it off. Sure. She replied with a small smile as she saw her hand Emil the gloves and their stick back. I think we should possibly find another stick, preferably a longer one so we aren't so close to the plant, if you want to continue experimenting. Safety is important with these kinds of things. She pointed out.

Emil...blinked. They were being gently lectured, redirected, helped, offered friendship, and assisted by three strangers all at once. Their mind was struggling to process the trio's varied responses to their experimenting, but they didn't seem to be directly upset with Emil. That helped the redhead calm down just a hair.
"It should be alright, I only plan to-"
Emil looked over to the bubotuber - and finally noticed the irritation they'd caused with their attempts at poking and observing. That shut Emil up right away. They'd tried everything to be as gentle as possible, and yet they'd still managed to make the plant leak pus. That captured their attention for a moment - why were these plants so sensitive to touch? Were their predators extremely light or delicate? Was it due to the mechanism that kept the pus within the main body? And yet it was hardy enough to withstand day-to-day stressors - perhaps there was a way to replicate that for something like a projectile. Or perhaps-
Emil chased their own thoughts in silence for a moment before remembering that they were with others. They snapped back to attention with a slightly sheepish look.
"Um...maybe that's enough for today. At least with this specimen. I...I don't want to risk lasting damage to something I didn't grow."
