The Red Queen's Labyrinth
THE RED QUEEN'S LABYRINTH
(Group 15)
Whimsy was in the air, for it was the morning of the Wonderland Waltz at last! Many attendees shuffled and skipped around in their rooms, preparing their finest robes and accessories for the occasion. Though, not all were still sewing the last pearls onto their gowns or choosing their cufflinks.
Brave souls who have taken up the challenge of The Red Queen's Labyrinth have all gathered today in the Small Hall. Each possessed a key that had been delivered to them by an owl, each customised in pattern and shape to match only one door.
Players would feel as if they had entered a life-sized rabbit’s burrow upon entering the Small Hall. Numerous doors spanned the seemingly endless corridor, lying in wait for their chosen group of challengers. Some doors were round, others triangular. The possibilities seemed endless as colours and patterns blurred together from a birdseye view.
Upon fitting one's key into the correct door, the door will swing open to reveal an elegant European garden. Jade green hedges adorned with ruby red roses towered over the players, winding in all sorts of odd angles and curves. It was a maze, and players were faced with the mouth of the beast.
Obstacle 1
Upon taking your first steps into the maze, players will be led down a colourful checker-patterned path. Approaching the end of this path, it became narrow, looping once to reveal the first challenge in their way.
Upon stepping to the end of the path, the leaves of the hedge walls would begin to rustle violently. The ground trembled a little as the once singular hedge wall ripped itself apart, revealing THREE PATHWAYS.
Popping colours, vivid shades: The first path was colourful in many ways. Fungi of all colours and varieties were richly scattered across the path, making the dirt look more like a fruit cake from afar. If you lean too close, some might get mischievous and start to spit rainbow spore clouds at you!
The saying goes, “No journey is taken alone!” Come forth, social butterflies, for on the second path lies countless eyes. Beady-eyed garden gnomes danced in arrow formations in the centre of the path, as if inviting the players in. Even from the entrance, the faintest giggling and a peculiar song of gibberish filled the air.
Elegant, refined, a royal’s heart must never be satisfied. The third path was tailored fit for royalty. The golden arch at the entrance glimmered in the sunlight, and beyond it, beautiful ruby roses were intertwined into the emerald hedges. Opulence was in the air, and the gentle flow of a fountain could be heard down the perfect path.
A riddle is written on an oval sign in loopy letters:
Before you lay a path split in three,
But only one will be a breeze!
Will you go down the first path where life's abundant,
And flourishing nature is the ruler incumbent?
Or prepare for a party,
For the company of critters on the second path is nothing short of hearty.
Opulence, oh, a dream of many.
On the third path where riches a-plenty await,
It is up to you to seize your fate.
One last advice.
Heed it, it shall suffice:
To brave the jungle
is to have a knowing local in the bundle.
To go without, you'd best have an out!
Choices, choices, three too many choices! Which one will you take, brave challengers?

Ilias had arrived alone. Lachlan was off somewhere, knowing God knows what. Making friends, probably, Ilias thought with indifference, slightly tinged with a bitterness he refused to voice aloud. The Labyrinth game had been his own idea, and he hadn’t even asked his foster brother to join him before he’d already signed up. It was unclear if he’d even noticed when Ilias slipped away from the ball without a word. A strange-looking key had been delivered by an owl that would presumably lead inside one of the dozen doors inside the small hall where all the participants had gathered. Since this was the first time he’d done anything like this, he honestly had no idea what to expect or what he was supposed to be doing. The Hawaiian boy tried his luck with a few doors, to no avail, so he continued down the hall to try any door that even remotely matched his key. After every failed attempt, he grew more self-conscious—wondering if anyone was watching, laughing behind his back. It was a stupid thought, he knew. No one knew him here, with a literal ocean between his life back in America and the British islands, so the risk was slim, yet he couldn’t quite shake the feeling of being evaluated. Fumbling with the key by another, triangular shaped door, Ilias mumbled to himself. “Door fifteen…” The others had not brought much luck. This has to be the right one, he thought as he pushed the key inside the keyhole. It clicked as he turned it. The door swung open, revealing a flashy garden maze inside. Huge jade hedges decorated with ruby red roses that could almost pass for blood towered above, leading the way down a checkered path. It reminded him of a dream—if his own dreamscape hadn’t been completely fucked up, with its mysterious inhabitants, visitors and the constant chase for freedom, safety, or prey. It was familiar, too, like something out of a storybook. Despite coming from a no-maj background, Ilias had not exactly grown up watching Disney and the usual movies like most kids his age would have. Before he’d moved between foster homes, they’d barely been able to afford a TV. After his situation had improved, socio-economically anyway, he had been more concerned with school and extracurricular activities to waste time on the couch. Of course, he wasn’t completely out of the loop. The Alice in Wonderland motifs were vaguely familiar, but the overall story was unfamiliar to him. “Hello? Is anyone here?” His voice disappeared between the thick greenery. If he’d been assigned a group, Ilias was the first to arrive, for he was completely alone. Unless the others had ventured inside and lost their way, or perhaps solved whatever puzzles laid ahead. Standing rooted in place, Ilias considered the riddle and the three clear options before him. Some of them were more inviting than others, though he was well aware the looks could be deceiving. The blinding, golden arch to the third route was immediately out of the question. Fit for a royal, yeah… definitely not. The thought made him roll his eyes, focusing on the first color explosion and the second path instead. |

Marcella had gone to the ball briefly to check on her best friend, Ava. Both of them had simultaneously agreed to try spending on the event, separated into groups. Marcella had agreed to sign up for the Labyrinth all because of Ava. She quickly got out of the ball and wandered around.
She felt as if she had entered a life-sized rabbit’s burrow upon entering the Small Hall. Doors filled the endless corridor. Some doors were round, others triangular. The possibilities seemed endless. A strange-looking key had been delivered to her by an owl. Marcella went around trying the key on various doors. And yup, you guessed it, none of it fit.
She finally stood in front of a triangular door. "Door fifteen...please work..." she mumbled as she fumbled with the lock. The lock clicked, and the door swung open, revealing an elegant European garden. Jade green hedges adorned with ruby red roses towered over the people, winding in all sorts of odd angles and curves. It was a maze, and they were faced with the mouth of the beast. Marcella could feel the Alice in Wonderland vibes strong in the air. Despite not coming from a Muggle background, Marcella loved Disney movies. Like they're amazing!
Reality hit Marcella as she soon noticed a boy around her age standing. "Hello?" She meant for it to come as a greeting, but her awkwardness took over.

"Harpy Hare, where have you buried all your children? / Tell me so I say."
Valour had quickly escaped the pirouetting battlefield that was the Wonderland Waltz, her dress skirt bundled up in her fist as she flitted lightly down the shifting staircases. The ebbing of music began to fade as they walked towards the transformed Small Hall, which now stood before her like the mouth of a beast, a rabbit hole about to swallow them whole. There seemed to be some sort of vibration or hum emanating from the place, inviting her in. It felt rather fitting. Their ensemble was inspired by the little White Rabbit of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. A silky dress fell over their form like crashing waves, opalescent and milky, though the trim was now murky and damp with dew from their earlier explorations of the castle grounds. Valour wore a white lace veil over their raven hair, resembling drooping rabbit ears. As their heels clicked against the marble floors, they wondered when their ‘Alice’ might make an appearance. She had been hoping she might be able to lead her upperclassman, Elena, down some rabbit holes this evening, particularly with Valour’s mounting suspicions that the girl had more secrets than most.
Pulling out their silver pocket watch, the witch figured now was a better time than any to get started with the maze. Fashionably late, they retrieved the pretty little key she had received via owl the previous night. After a short moment of deliberation, surveying the peculiar corridor of doors before her, something about door 15 seemed to call for her. Embracing this spark of intuition, they slid the key into the lock, clicking the mechanism into place with ease.
They were met with a blinding disarray of colours and patterns, accompanied by the sweet smell of roses. It was as though they had stepped into a world of Technicolor, surrounded by crystalline plants and a whimsical, winding path that diverged into the three directions. Without even taking heed to the clue before them, their silvery eyes immediately latched onto the opulent third path to their right. It murmured promises of grandeur and greatness; Valour found it hard to tear their eyes away, against their own better judgment. The other paths did little to excite their imagination, though the riddle engraved beside them gave them pause. Mulling the words over and turning them over in her mind, the warning seemed to suggest some danger lurking in the depths of the first path. However, Valour was not too convinced by taking a chance with unfriendly gnomes. Path three simply seemed too good to be true. They bit their bottom lip as they deliberated, uncertain - a feeling they very rarely felt.
As she considered her options, Valour’s eyes absentmindedly darted over her company. She had somewhat forgotten that this was meant to be a group exercise and neglected to introduce herself to the others in the room. She noticed a girl her age, whom she recognised from the library and the odd class here or there. Val didn’t have much time to pay her mind, as their thoughts were interrupted by a dull throbbing pain in the back of her skull. Their eyes wandered over a boy over to the corner, tall and statuesque. A deep pit formed in Valour’s stomach. He was familiar. Immaculate. And overwhelmingly out of place.
"You can't keep them all caged. / They will fight and run away."

TWELFTH OF APRIL, 2026 Picking path 2 |
In the matter of minutes, or seconds, the room had gone from isolating and deserted to suddenly starting to feel crammed. A girl entered after him, interrupting his thoughts with a greeting that came out sounding more like a question than a proper hello. Since he thought he’d been alone all up until then, the sudden presence made his chest jump and his body tense. His gaze brushed over the girl’s dolled-up features and huge, extravagant blue dress with rhinestones scattered across the bodice. Money was clearly not a problem. Ilias could almost be considered tragically underdressed in comparison, in his distressed jeans, slightly too baggy to fit properly, and an oversized sweater. Not everyone had the funds to have a whole wardrobe full of single-occasion costumes. His foster parents would probably have bought him whatever he wanted, had he asked, but he cringed just thinking about asking them for something redundant like an Alice in Wonderland costume. They weren’t even his real parents, and with that reasoning, asking for money or gifts felt unjustified. Ilias’s gaze flickered between the girl and the paths ahead. “Hi,” he said with a distinct New York accent, simply because ignoring her would have been more awkward. What else was there to say? With an expression of aloofness, he nodded forward, towards the different branching paths and the riddle they were supposed to use for guidance—at least that’s what he assumed it was for. “I think we’re supposed to pick a path. I’m not sure though. You can read the riddle for yourself.” He shrugged, crossing his arms over his chest. During their brief conversation, Ilias hadn’t even registered that there was a third presence lingering somewhere in the room who was yet to introduce themselves. Granted, if Ilias could have skipped introductions entirely, he would. Suddenly, he had the uneasy yet familiar feeling of being watched. His gaze sought out the source among them. Once again, his intuition was correct, for behind them stood a second girl, equally dressed up in a white silk gown. How long had she been there? The first thing he noted about her was the attention-grabbing contrast between her deep skin and light, almost translucent eyes. He noticed those details about her because she was already staring at him, icy blue eyes quietly assessing him, like she was looking right through him. Feeling squeamish by the attention and something else he couldn’t quite pinpoint, Ilias pointedly resisted meeting her gaze. He didn’t have to either way. His gaze darted to the door when yet another, third girl entered, bringing a sort of airy, head-up-in-the-clouds energy to the otherwise restraint group. Ilias was usually not a fan of the type, but for once, he found it refreshing. Of course, he was only making assumptions. Apparently she was a friend to the quiet girl who’d seemed content with just being quiet and staring at people. Valour. He wouldn’t have found it half as strange if he hadn’t been the receiver of said staring. The new blonde acted as a sort of reprieve, pulling whatever attention was on Ilias to her, as the newest—chatty— addition. Blending in among the group as the clear outsider, literally and figurative, the boy allowed himself a better look at his groupmates. To be paired up with three objectively pretty girls was probably some others guy's dream. His mind wandered to his foster brother, rolling his eyes. He didn't even want to imagine Lachlan's reaction if he had known. Grimacing, he glanced down at his underwhelming attire. He would have thrived, meanwhile, Ilias felt out of place in his busted converse and could only ask himself how he'd ended up among them. Between Ilias and the three girls, he was the only one who hadn’t gotten the memo that they were supposed to be wearing a costume for the labyrinth. Although, most people would probably be in agreement that dressing up was the point of parties and events. With his history and at his age, Ilias had not been to many parties, and he imagined it showed. “So… Unless anyone’s got a better idea, I’d go with two.” |

ROUND 1 MOD POST
(Group 15)
The fifteenth, and final group, was small, but perfectly formed. Three Hogwarts students, one international. Three first years, one second. The introductions were awkward at first, before they all arrived, and they started puzzling the riddle. Their differences would help them, giving different views on the riddle, before they decided on an answer, each of them separately, but thinking in sink. This led them to them deciding it would be sensible to go down the SECOND PATH, following the arrows of the gnomes. They managed to avoid the allure of the jems all down the third path, and they were successful in avoiding the first path, which would lead to some very unpleasant smells from the plants.
For players who chose to brave the SECOND PATH, they would find themselves rewarded! Players who walked down the path would be excitedly crowded and shuffled along the path by the dancing garden gnomes present. Despite their excited gibberish, the gnomes would soon prove to be the “knowing locals” that the riddle hinted at. Without trouble or hurdles, the group would find themselves in overly friendly, but safe hands. The peaceful passage through the breezy, grassy path with the cheery gnomes would eventually lead them to the second obstacle in the labyrinth…
Obstacle 2
At the end of the correct path lay the next obstacle for our brave challengers. Before them stood a door buried deep in neat, jade hedges. The air smelled of fragrant roses, and there was nothing around other than roses, hedges, and that mysterious door. If players were to try and twist its shimmering rose-gold handle, they would find it locked. A keyhole could be found beneath the handle. It was unusually small, smaller than most keyholes. To the right of the door, between a trimmed hedge and a stone wall, players would find a table. Resting on the table was a silver key, the metal glinting in the sunlight.
Above the door, a wooden, heart-shaped sign swings with the following riddle:
A key that’s right but far too tall,
Will never fit a door so small!
Shrink the problem, not the door...
Then the key may be used once more.
Oh dear, such a predicament. Perhaps this will be a job for those wands!

"Harpy Hare, where have you buried all your children? / Tell me so I say."
Valour slowly tore her eyes away from the American boy, gears turning slowly in her mind as she tried to unravel what about him made him so… peculiar. Her lips formed a slight pout, the shade of dried blood, as she surveyed the riddle once more. Thankfully, the arrival of a whirlwind in blue quickly cleared the stagnant air between them, calling out her name.
Turning on their arrow-sharp heels, their silver eyes collided with shimmering blue like the moon over waves. Her Alice was here – and she had taken her sweet time. Elena grasped Valour’s hands with a blinding smile, softening the girl’s hardened look. They did not quite return the bright expression, lips forming a downturned smile, but anyone who knew the witch would know the fondness in her eyes was reserved for only very few.
“Elena. Nice of you to join us.” The comment was light, merely teasing. She could not help but be endeared by the girl who’d been so gentle with her.
The group melted naturally together, as though Clark’s presence had been the catalyst needed to break the awkward tension and unfamiliarity amongst them. They made an unlikely troupe, plucked straight from a fairytale. The two girls that flanked Valour were visions in blue, gilded in accents of gold and pearl. Except the boy. He spoke up, casually pitching in about the second path. He looked exceedingly normal, something Valour found far more becoming than pompous coattails and brogues. She didn’t smile at him, simply looking up at him through dark red lashes, rounded eyes searching his face for any sign of recognition. She moved swiftly on, addressing the rest of the group.
“Agreed. It seems that the first and third paths are traps. I’d rather not get my hands dirty so early in the game.”
They deliberated for a moment more, passing uncertain looks and murmurs to one another before finally concluding the nameless boy was right. As no one appeared to want to make the first move, Valour figured now was a better time than any. Grasping her dress in both hands, wand tucked behind her ear, she strutted straight down the middle path, expression level and ready for trouble.
All her steely nerve seemed to be for naught; the gnomes were far too kind. They bumbled around at their feet, chattering nonsensically at the four newcomers. Valour was quite fond of strange magical creatures, looking down at them and cracking a subtle smile, nodding softly as if understanding perfectly the tales they shared. One gripped her index finger and pulled her down the path, earning a gasp of surprise and prying out a quiet chuckle. She dutifully followed, crouching as they led her astray. Others nudged and pushed at her teammates' heels, guiding them through the thicket. The passage was beautiful, with sunshine bleeding through the leaves above and a gentle breeze that tousled their hair. If the rest of the labyrinth was as serene as this, they certainly weren’t complaining.
Finally, their newfound friends brought them to the end of the road, at which they were faced with a glistening door of rose-gold. It was nestled amongst rose bushes, beckoning them closer, and yet, however hard Valour rattled the door handle, it would not budge. The group took a moment to drink in the new puzzle before them, scanning their surroundings for the key the riddle spoke of. As the dewy scent of roses flooded her senses, Valour paused and looked at the brunette girl and the American, her voice cutting and curious.
“I don’t suppose you two have names, do you?”
"You can't keep them all caged. / They will fight and run away."

ROUND 2 MOD POST
(Group 14)
[/quote]This group were getting far, quickly. Despite only half the group knowing each other, they were all contributing, in a way that would make someone proud.
Upon Elena's successful casting of Reducio, the golden key shrinks up, a glistening shine covering the key as it becomes just the right size. With the newly shrunken key, the players would find it a perfect fit into the door’s keyhole! The lock seemed to glow and hum, as if in approval at the players' success. Twisting the key, players would hear a click. In the blink of an eye, light glowed from the door as the material chipped away into dust, revealing a now-empty doorway.
Obstacle 3
Stepping past this doorway, players would be faced with an opulent yard fit for a queen. In the centre of it was a huge, luxurious pool made of shiny marble and adorned with ruby gemstone statues. The water was a brilliant, shimmering teal in the pool, quite unlike regular water, and under the sunlight, the sight was almost blinding.
The pool would have been perfect for a summer party– If not for what seemed to be a death machine in the middle of it. A flat path of emerald grass connected one end of the pool to the other, and hanging atop it was what seemed to be an axe. Back and forth the axe swung over the centre of the path, blocking the path to the next obstacle! Thankfully, if any players squinted, they would realise the axe is almost akin to a soft pillow version of the real deal.
Tighten those shoelaces and watch your step, challengers! You're going to have to make a mad dash.
