It was a mini-baptism by fire.

Poppy had seen a few duels, enough to know that people had to get hit and that they had to do some hitting. She knew that each individual came with their own skill set and that it could vastly impact the outcome of the duel – as well as one's experience. It wouldn't have been an exaggeration to say that, before plucking up the courage to write her name down, Poppy had done everything she could to give herself the illusion of being prepared.

In the end, nothing could prepare her for the moment all three wands turned to her and spell after spell came barrelling toward her. The squeak that travelled up the back of her throat was involuntary, and by the time she finally managed to move out of the way (ratherm be moved out of the way), there was a deep chill that ran through her bones and a force that knocked her right off her feet.

Poppy staggered, barely managing to keep her balance as she was moved back – but she remained on her feet, and that...that was a good enough start. The real relief came in that her team hadn't been hit. It almost felt...noble even if she knew on some level that it wasn't her job to protect them – a new feeling for the girl to sort through when her head no longer needed to be in the game.

Breathe, Poppy. Just a bit of chill. Just a little push. You're okay.

She wouldn't panic herself out of her first duel and was able to take some small satisfaction in knowing her own spell had landed. This – freezing as it was – wasn't ...the worst she'd expected.

Shaking herself back into focus, the first year tried to push through the shakes and shivers as she raised her wand to try again.

Cassie's spell hits her target, though not perfectly. She is especially surprised when she sees that their opponent chose a different strategy from theirs. They chose to each target their spell at a different student, but the opponents all decided to target on Cassie's teammate-- Persephone. 'Are you alright?' Cassie asks her friend, having a worried look on her face. How awful it must be to be targeted by three wands at the same time!

It looks as if their opponents have caused more harm than they did. Cassie has to admit that she is a bit anxious. She takes a few deep breaths. Calm down. She tells herself. Calm down, don't give up and who knows what the final result might be? After all, she needs to concentrate to perform the next spell. She quickly goes through their strategy for the second round she has discussed with her teammates. Knowing what to do next, Cassie feels more confident.

She smiles to herself and her teammates, hoping to give them confidence too. She goes through the wand movement and incantation in her mind. Come on Cassie. she says in her mind. You can do this. Taking another few deep breaths. She is ready to continue the duel.

Interactions such as these were like winged insects to a funeral pyre; inevitable, both in occurrence and in consequence. The moment spells flew across the room, someone was bound to get burned, or in this case, frozen. That was Cirrus' own teammate, Persephone. Inevitable that she couldn't dodge three spells targeted at her all at once, and inevitable that she would be left with the wounds. Cirrus' care for her own inaccuracy in spell casting went right out the window after witnessing the damage done to her own teammate, wholly taken over by concern for Persephone's wellbeing. But she couldn't do anything about it, not right now, as much as she wanted to. One does not go into battle to wave flowers at their enemies, it was merciless in full form, conceived in robed black.

Cirrus offered a small thumbs up to Persephone, unsure what that would do for her, physically, but hoping it'd provide a boost in morality, even a small one. Just a little reminder that 'hey, your team is still here for you'. It was only the first round; she knew firsthand just how quickly things could shift gears. Her firsthand experience also drove her belief that skill means little when luck is steering the ship. A masterful cast is only so effective when the victim is lucky enough to avoid being hit in the first place. Perhaps that's something they could aim for during this duel. Cirrus would soon find out when she wielded her wand for her next cast.

The spell worked!

It was a circumstance among circumstances. When the pressure was on, his spell was able to succeed and there nothing bringing him down now.

The spells were flying around him, there was no denying that. A ridiculous amount of flipendos for Emil’s liking, but as things kept shooting across the dueling arena he had to keep his wits about him. There was no shortage of magic flying around and nothing to prevent him from getting bit by another stray bolt of magic.

He gripped his wand tightly and moved as much as he could. His eyes synced up with the other teammates and he looked into his cousin, the target of their last barrage. She shot her spells, as they did as well. It wasn’t anything other than the way the duel was played, but it didn’t stop the hurt from pointing his wand at his own blood.

But the duel had to continue.

He ran one way, and then ran another. Every motion he made pushed his heart beat faster and faster. It wasn’t something he had been used to, the pressures of fighting. Maybe a little lack of exercise hadn’t helped him in this scenario. If he managed to survive the throngs of the duel, maybe he would get himself into a fitness regimen.
