I was back in the duelling room, for the third time. And, for my second time, I was moderating the duel. It was going to be between a first year, called Persephone, and a second year, called Laurie. I'd never met either of them (at least, as far as I could recall), but I felt like I'd probably seen them around in passing - particularly Laurie, as she was in the same year as me. I had no idea what either of them were up to, in terms of their magical abilities, but I was excited to find out - would they have already duelled many times before, or was it their first time? Were they more offensive, or defensive?
When they arrived, I would greet them with a small smile, and watch as they took their places on the "piste", which was basically just a platform. I waited until they both looked settled, or, at least, had their wands out, and were holding them the right way round.
"Okay, thank you both for coming today! Do you have any questions, before we begin?"
I waited, but neither of them said anything.
"Good. So, when you are ready, please begin!"
I stood back, and watched, ready to see how chaotic this duel would be!

There will be a week until I do my next post. In that time, please make sure you:
1. Write a post in this RP. It needs to be at least 200 words.
2. Send me an owl (making sure not to add anyone else in), telling me what spell you want to cast. I will check that you actually have the spell - if you don't, I will owl you, and tell you.
If you don't do both of these things in the time limit, your action will be voided. But, if you need extra time, if you are busy IRL, please owl me, and we can sort something out.
Good luck!

It was only her second duel, but Poppy was finding that she wasn't nearly as nervous as she was in the first. Some of it surely had to do with not being anyone's captain and not having the weight of victory or defeat on her shoulders. The rest came with it no longer being one big unknown. This time, it was a one-on-one: she and her wand versus – to her surprise – the girl she'd run into that time in the abandoned lavatory.

Laurie, wasn't it?
It was true what they said: the more you put yourself out there, the smaller the castle began to seem. In the beginning, when every face was unfamiliar, Poppy felt adrift. It didn't help that she'd hidden away in her common room every chance she got and that she'd been too terrified to create bridges between her and others. Ever since she'd made up her mind to not remain a wilting wallflower, the little girl found herself amazed at the way the castle opened up.
Where she could, she tried to talk more. When she could, she signed up for unofficial matches. Quidditch, broom racing, duelling – it made no difference. Poppy was determined to sample everything she could, in search of her own conclusions. She'd tried it the other way and had spent the resulting months in anxious misery.
This...this couldn't be worse. In fact, since taking the stance that she had, Persephone found herself enjoying her school life more, against her better judgement.
So, no, she wasn't nervous. There was a silent resolve within the girl that told her she would either win or lose and walk away having learned something else about her wand and her magic.
Even if she did get hurt, it beat sitting by the window in her common room waiting for the days to pass by.
She shook her head at the question of whether she had questions. None. It was officially not her first duel, and Poppy more or less knew what to expect. These duels were a secret godsend. They helped her refine her strategy. Who knew, one day she might even become good at it.
The Gryffindor gave a shy little wave to her opponent, then drew her wand. Already ideas were formulating in her mind.

Another day, another duel. Laurie slung her backpack over her shoulder, mentally listing off all the spells she planned on using. Expelliarmus could be a good first move,
She also didn’t really know who her opponent was, she didn’t really pause long enough to check. Oh well, guess she’d see who it was eventually. Hopefully it was someone worth the hassle.
She stopped by the owlery on her way, to give Bella the piece of bread and corn she had saved for her.
Ironically, this was her first official duel. All the others had just been done for fun, or to prove that she would win. And she did, every single time. All the others were just too impulsive to actually think about what spell they were going to cast. They would usually pull of a charm like Rictumsempera. Such a terrible choice. That charm was for the daftest of idiots.
She walked up the hallway, her wand in hand. She looked across the room to see the girl she had met at the Abandoned Toilets, even though she didn’t know her name.
Laurie greeted her opponent by shaking her hand.
“Nice to meet you, my name’s Laurie. What’s yours?”

That was an amazing first round. Both of the girls started offensive, with different strategies. Persephone, in the nicest way possible, was trying to harm Laurie, while Laurie was trying to put Persephone at a disadvantage for the next round. Or, at least, I assumed that was the aim.
Both spells fired, and, while Persephone's flipendo was a clean hit, fully knocking Laurie off her feet, Laurie's spell was a little, tiny bit off. Or, maybe, Persephone just managed to perfectly dodge it, with minimal effort. Either way, the facts were clear - Laurie got injured, Persephone didn't.
I wasn't on the side of either one of them particually - I wanted Persephone to win, so that a first year beat a second year, but I also wanted Laurie to win, so my year upheld their reputation. If you could call it that.
Like all the previous times I'd been in the duelling room, my mind drifted back upstairs, to where Isis was probably destroying my room. Like before, I was happy she wasn't down here, as there was a high chance she would get hit by a spell. But, she would love all the bright coloured flashes.
"Okay! Are you both alright? The next round starts... Now!"

"O—Oh, I know," Poppy replied to Laurie's introduction. It hadn't been so long ago that they'd run into each other over in the abandoned lavatory, and the older girl had introduced herself then. Perhaps the interaction was simply that forgettable. Poppy flushed at the thought but had no time to dwell on it before the spells started slinging.

Her flipendo did better work than she thought it would, landing as intended. What a relief. It wasn't so much that Poppy questioned her casting ability, but nerves were a hell of a thing, and while she wasn't nervous per se, the adrenaline was coursing through her something fierce, and that came with its own jitters.
When Laurie cast, Poppy leapt, side-stepping in time to miss whatever it was that the second year had cast.
She had to remain on her feet. One success didn't guarantee a match, and Poppy knew that she was already at a disadvantage with the girl having an entire year of spells on her. The moment she tried to rest on some imagined laurels, there was every chance she would be the one knocked back onto her bum.
"I'm alright," she confirmed when asked. Even if she weren't, it was a duel, and the Gryffindor expected she would be walking away with a few bumps and bruises. Frankly, it was a miracle she hadn't already been hit.
She knew exactly what she would do!
Brandishing her wand, Poppy tried to shoot off her second spell.
