Kennedy loved school and learning everything she possibly could. Hogwarts had unlimited knowledge to offer her, and she took every opportunity she had to soak it up. However, some classes were a bit more challenging to remain focused in than others.
She often was able to pay attention to History of Magic, unlike many of her half asleep peers, and found the subject interesting most of the time. Today everyone was alert though, the room filled with a hushed buzz of talk of the spring ball. However today Kennedy's mind was far from the classroom or the dance. From her seat she had a clear view through the window and was sure she had seen a European Robin.
They weren't too uncommon, but Kennedy had been itching to draw one for the longest time, and they had recently seemed to disappear at the most inconvenient times. She had seen the orange bellied shape flutter pass the window several times during the block, and was now sure that it's home couldn't be far. She counted down the minutes in her head until she could rush outside, and maybe she could even find its nest. The idea of sitting and sketching for the rest of her day brought a smile to her lips. Now she only had make it through History of Magic. As the professor finally finished class, Kennedy was the first one to stand up to leave with her sketch book already in hand. She had made it out into the corridors and was about to find the nearest exit to the grounds when someone stopped her.

Ava loved History of Magic, learning about things as if they were stories. So, she always read ahead. That leads her to get bored a lot in class. She would have gone and talked to her friends, but sadly, the other fellow Ravenclaws of hers were a bit too studious.
The seer looked around, trying to find someone she could talk to, to spend time with. When she noticed a Hufflepuff. There was nothing special, but unlike her fellow students, she wasn't sleeping or talking. She was way too focused outside the window, as if trying to find something or someone. A sudden smile grazed her face, and suddenly Ava found herself smiling with her.
As soon as the class ended, she found the Hufflepuff girl rushing out immediately. Ava wasn't one to leave the classroom first; she usually waits until everyone leaves, then she slouches down on the desk like a sloth. But this time, she wanted to rush out too, wanting to follow the Hufflepuff.
The Ravenclaw followed her down the corridor; thankfully, the seer was fast on her feet. "Excuse me!" She quickly said, slightly tapping her on the shoulder. "Hey!"
Ava now stopped her, but she didn't know what to say. The seer has always been an awkward girl, but she would still say this is the most awkward moment in her entire life. "Sorry. . . I just wanted to talk to you. I. . . uhm, noticed your sketchbook. . . Do you draw often?" Ava was now saying anything at this point, just to talk to her.

"Excuse me!" Someone tapped on Kennedy's shoulder, making her jump a little. "Hey!"March 30th 2026 | Kennedy Cheek | @Ava Lynn - color=#4d8084 | WC:230
Kennedy turned to see it was a girl who had stopped her. She recognized the girl from History of Magic, although she couldn't think of her name. Kennedy was hesitant to stop her journey outside, ever moment in the hall was another opportunity for the robin to fly away for good.
"Hello" Kennedy said with a small shy smile. She wasn't a very social person, and was often awkward in conversation, but she always tried her best to be polite.
"Sorry... I just wanted to talk to you. I...uhm, noticed your sketchbook...Do you draw often."
The girl asked, slightly stumbling over the sentence. Subconsciously Kennedy drew her sketchbook into herself, as if to protect it. Even though since coming to Hogwarts she had been more open about sharing her favorite hobby, she still felt a tug of desire to keep her things private.
"Um... Sort of" Kennedy died a little on the inside. What kind of answer was 'sort of'. The girl was sure to think she was awkward or off putting for saying something like that. Kennedy's eyes darted to the exit, where the robin called to her.
"I-I draw when I can find the right subjects" Kennedy amended her earlier statement to seen slight less rude. But still her mind was anywhere but the conversation.

Ava smiled as the girl replied, leaning against the wall, trying to look cool. She had the sudden urge to say something cheeky but controlled herself. "You draw when you find a right subject, so have you found anything or anyone you want to draw?" Ava asked, not taking the hint that the Hufflepuff isn't interested in the conversation. "You know, if you still haven't found any, I can help you find them."
Remembering that she still hasn't told her name, she pulled out her hand. "Ah. I totally forgot to introduce myself; I'm Ava." The Ravenclaw said, giving the other girl a huge smile. "Well, if you need help in anything, you can always let me know. I would love to help anytime!"
"Do you have any class right now?" Finally noticing that the Hufflepuff was looking down the corridor, she asked her. "I can walk you to it," the seer said as if she hadn't gotten lost three times earlier this day. She leaned off the wall, pulling the string of her backpack as she motioned the girl with a bow to continue. For someone like her, who doesn't even talk to people until she is spoken to, there was this sudden energy this time to just talk to the Hufflepuff girl.

Kennedy felt bad. The girl seemed nice, but she simply was not interested in chatting right now. People rarely started conversations with Kennedy, and when they did it rarely went well with her social anxiety. Right now was an opportunity to maybe make a new friend, but she couldn’t bring herself to fully engage in the conversation, not when that European robin waited right outside the door. So as the girl asked her questions, Kennedy put little thought into her answers, not bothering to check if she came across as rude. “Actually I don’t need any help, thank you though, but I think I have it covered.”
If Kennedy had been paying attention she would have taken it as an opportunity to talk about the birds she studied. She also may have been slightly offended, she occasionally had a bit of an ego when it came to her knowledge of birds. But Kennedy wasn’t paying attention, her eyes still darting down the corridor, and her hands figuring with the a flap on her sketch book. She shifted angling her body a bit more towards the exit. The girl then stuck her hand out for a handshake,
“Ah. I totally forgot to introduce myself; I'm Ava.”
Kennedy took it weakly and offered her own name and a smile in return
“Well, if you need help in anything, you can always let me know. I would love to help anytime!”
Kennedy sighed to herself. She wasn’t one to get annoyed, but at this point Kennedy was ready to cut the conversation off. The girl finally seemed to take note of her body language.
“Do you have any class right now? I can walk you to it.” Ava offered, gesturing for her to continue down the hall.
“No.” Kennedy replied impulsively before correcting herself.
“I don’t have a class right now. I’m just going to go outside. Right now. If you don’t mind.”
Kennedy wondered if the girl, Ava, would finally get the hint that she had somewhere important to be. Well important to her at least. She then turned on her heel, preparing to leave.

Ava, being oblivious to the rejection, continued talking. "Well, if you're going outside, we can go there together," Ava said beside her, ready to walk with her. "I saw you looking out. Did you see something that you wanted to draw?"
Ava couldn't understand the signs that the Hufflepuff wasn't interested at all. For her, it was just that the girl was probably in a hurry, and she could sound a bit rude or uninterested too when she is in a hurry.
"Anyway, I still don't know your name!" The seer said, pouting at the Hufflepuff, as they started walking, more like Ava walking a bit too fast. She looked around to see if her friends were waiting, hoping they wouldn't.
"So, you got friends?" The Ravenclaw asked, as she didn't see the girl talking to anyone, but that could be just for the class. That didn't stop Ava from asking, though.
Ava couldn't express what she was feeling; it wasn't the same as how she felt with the boys she had tiny crushes on. But the Hufflepuff was a girl too; she wouldn't have a crush on her, right? She wants to be friends with her, right? The seer didn't want to linger on it much.

Ava continued with Kennedy as she made her way to the exit. She walked at a pace slightly faster than normal, desperate to get into the outside. Kennedy was relived to finally be on her way outside, and her mood was slightly improved. When Ava asked her questions, Kennedy answered them shyly, but still not fully into the conversation.
"Um- uh well yeah. I want to find a bird I saw earlier."
"I still don't know you name!" Ava exclaimed, her pace in time with her excitement.
"I'm Kennedy," She said, not slowing her pace as she took a turn and started descending down the stairs.
"So you got friends?" Ava asked. Kennedy felt herself blush. Ava was very obviously trying to make small talk, and that was something Kennedy did not excel at. She only nodded, and thought to herself about her owl Valor and her best friend Elise. Kennedy admired Ava actually, for being being so bold as to try and make new friends, if only the timing had been different. Kennedy saw a flash of orange pass the window on the ground floor, and she almost yelped. The bird was still flying around out there! She glanced at Ava, who still seemed to want to continue the conversation.
"Is there something you want. Not to be rude or anything, but I haven't got very much time." Kennedy tried to be polite as possible, but she needed the conversation to come to some sort of conclusion so she could go outside and draw the bird before it found something else to do.

The Ravenclaw nodded in acknowledgement, of the Hufflepuff's search for the bird. "Kennedy," she muttered under her breath. She was already finding her cool. And the nervousness to ask the Hufflepuff to be her partner is increasing as well. But she still continued, hoping all these small talks would eventually lead her to ask Kennedy about her plans for the Waltz. But it came sooner than expected.
Ava noticed her looking outside the large windows, but before she could ask anything, Kennedy finally asked what the Ravenclaw wanted. If only the seer knew how to say it out loud. To an introvert, Ava might look like a confident person, but her belief in 'fake it till you make it,' is the only way she is surviving. And now, it is the only chance she will get to say it, so she did regardless of the place and the words she'll choose.
"Uhm. . . It's just. . . You know the Spring Waltz is near. . ." The girl took a deep breath, "Well, I was hoping. . . that, maybe, you could come with me?" And she finally said it. The words she wanted to ask, since she had seen her in class. The seer really was hoping the girl would say yes. Ava has never really faced rejection in her life ever; being an only child, whatever she wanted, she got it without putting up much force.

Kennedy had been hearing people talk all about the wonderland waltz since it's announcement, but no one had said much about it to her. She heard people talk about who was going with who, and which couple would be the cutest. Kennedy never thought that she would be asked. It didn't make sense really, at least it didn't make sense to Kennedy. Her cheeks flushed scarlet in embarrassment as she stumbled over her words to give her answer.
"Uh-um... look I uh... No."
She turned around, forgetting all about the bird and walked quickly down the hallway on the verge of running.
Kennedy knew she was a coward. She had been honestly flustered and caught off guard by Ava's request. Parties scared her. Crowds scared her. New people scared her. Small talk scared her. Why couldn't she be a normal girl and give a normal answer just like all the other normal people. Kennedy wiped her eyes, clearing away the tears that threatened to blur her vision. She'd given Ava a crappy answer. Ava was brave for putting herself out there, but Kennedy was not. Even though she wasn't into Ava in a romantic fashion, Kennedy imagined what it would have been like to go to the ball with her as friends. If she had just ignored the tight feeling in her chest telling her that balls and dances weren't for her. If she had let her heart think and before her brain did. But that wasn't who she was, she was a shy girl who was a just coward. And it was too late now, she couldn't possibly face Ava anytime soon, not after what Kennedy had just said to her.
