The Homework Ball (Open for Everyone!)

"Woah!" Rosy walked into the ballroom and let out a silent gasp of delight. The icy blue chandelier on the ceiling hung above her head and as she looked around the other decorations, she was simply mesmerized.

A large Christmas tree stood in the middle with many glass ball ornaments which had tiny replicas of all students inside; one person in each ball. Rosy looked around the tree to find the ball with her replica and found it somewhere near the top. She found that the balls also gave a little hint of the house colour of the person; in her case, there was a slight green tint to it.

Rosy was in the room to write an essay for History of Magic about the Ballroom. She found the best way to learn about the ballroom was inside it. She sat down in a comfortable looking corner and propped open her copy of Hogwarts: A History, searching the appendix for the topic.

"Ballroom, ballroom, where are you? Oh, here it is!" She sat for almost an hour and once she had finished the essay decided to simply admire the beauty of the room. "I wish there would be a ball for First years soon" she silently muttered.

Suddenly, Rosy got an idea. She rummaged in her school bag to look for the mini gramophone she always kept. It was a rather peculiar thing to keep in a school bag but then again, Rosy was... different. She had all sorts of objects in her school bag; from pencils to nail polish to even mini gramophones. She had put an Undetectable Extension charm on her bag so it could hold more items.

She turned on the gramophone and popped in a record with a sweet, melodious tune on it. She began dancing as if she was on a highly respected stage. She had learnt ballet in her Muggle school and was happy to finally practice after such a long time.

She pirouetted and made to do a cartwheel when she thought she saw some eyes from the corner of the door. She slightly kicked the gramophone to turn it off, nearly toppling it over and asked loudly, "Who's there? Show yourself!"

Watching @Rosy Parker dance

Lilly had just been walking in the corridor, when she heard the faint sound of music coming from one of the rooms she had just walked past. She paused and turned, looking around for anyone nearby. Upon seeing no one, she walked back towards the room, the music growing louder as she did. She found the room with the door slightly opened, as looked inside. A girl about her own age was inside, dancing. She was very elegant, and seemed to flow with the music, capturing its personality perfectly.

Lilly’s eyes wandered, curious as to where the music was coming from. A small gramophone sat on a table with some bags and books. She had never seen a gramophone that size before, usually they were bigger than that! The music grew louder, and Lilly turned her attention back to the girl. She was just about to turn around and leave when the girl stopped. She kicked the gramophone slightly and it turned off. ”Who's there? Show yourself!"

Her heartbeat in her ears, Lilly swallowed, unsure of what to do. The sudden silence made her uneasy, and she could hear herself breathing unevenly. She walked into the room, shaking a bit, hoping the person wouldn’t notice. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to intrude” she says, still slowly approaching the person. “I just heard music and was wandering where it came from…”

Rosy was extremely mad at whoever the intruder was. From what she had learnt at home, sneaking up on people wasn't a very polite thing to do. Suddenly, a girl about her age walked out from behind the door and shut it behind her.

From the colour of her robes, Rosy understood she was a Hufflepuff. This made the situation easier. Even though Rosy was a Slytherin herself, she admired the Hufflepuff house and beleived it was seriously underrated. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to intrude” the girl said, still slowly approaching Rosy. “I just heard music and was wandering where it came from…”

Rosy's anger seemed to calm down a bit. As short-tempered as she could be sometimes, she knew an honest mistake when she saw one and this definitely was. "It's okay" she said, in a much calmer tone than before. "I was just doing my homework here when I got distracted and began to dance. What's your name? Want to join me?" she asked, trying her best to not appear rude.

Rosy began feeling rather foolish for asking the girl. Why would she, a Hufflepuff want to join a Slytherin like Rosy? She looked hopefully at the girl, hoping for a yes or even just a no, as long as it was polite.

The girl seemed to visibly calm down, her shoulders relaxing slightly as she understood Lilly’s mistake. Lilly had noticed that the girl had glanced at her tie, checking what house she was in. Hopefully she wouldn’t have any prejudice towards Hufflepuff, although Lilly hadn’t heard of anything really bad about being a Hufflepuff, only that they were the ‘stupidest’ house, but then again the girl would probably think Lilly was assuming the normal things about her being a Slytherin as well.

“It’s okay, I was just doing my homework here when I got distracted and began to dance. What’s your name? Want to join me?” The girl asked, her voice a gentler tone than before. Lilly made a split second choice, and smiled slightly at the girl before saying ”sure”. She had previously been walking to the library to do her charms homework, but figured she could always do it tomorrow after lunch instead.

“I’m Lilly! You are amazing at dancing, I’ve always wanted to take classes but my parents wouldn’t let me. What’s your name?” She introduced herself whilst walking to the table and putting her bag down. It was louder than she meant it to be, and she flinched inside, hoping she didn't come across as over confident. She noticed the mini gramophone on the edge of the table again, and made a mental note to ask about it when she could.

“Sure, I’m Lilly! You are amazing at dancing, I’ve always wanted to take classes but my parents wouldn’t let me. What’s your name?” the girl asked cheerfully and Rosy couldn't help smiling.

"I'm Rosy" she replied. "Rosy Parker, I learnt dancing for 4 years in my Muggle school. I really miss it now" she added gazing out of the window and watching the sun set.

She turned and saw that the girl was looking curiously at the mini gramophone. "It was a birthday gift" she told Lilly. "From my mother, in case of 'emergencies'" she said emphasizing the quotes around emergencies with the index finger of her right hand.

Rosy looked around the beautifully decorated ballroom and gave a heavy sigh. She was wondering what Lilly must be thinking. This was a general weird habit of hers- she thought of what others were thinking as if indirectly trying to read their mind.

"Muggle technologies don't work inside Hogwarts so I couldn't really bring a radio or anything." she continued. "I like carrying this around, it reminds me of my mother" Suddenly tears began to fill Rosy's eyes; she was feeling a bit homesick.

She blinked the tears away, hoping Lilly hadn't noticed and made a note to herself to owl her parents next morning. She looked at Lilly and asked "So, Shall we begin?"

Kinsie had been wandering the castle after finishing her homework when she heard faint music echoing down the corridor. Curious, she followed the sound until she found herself standing outside the ballroom.

She carefully pushed the door open and stepped inside.

For a moment, she simply stared.

The ballroom was even more beautiful than she had imagined. The icy blue chandelier cast shimmering light across the room, and the giant Christmas tree in the center sparkled with enchanted ornaments. Kinsie noticed that two girls were already there, dancing to music from a tiny gramophone.

Not wanting to be rude, she hesitated near the doorway before finally gathering the courage to speak.

"Um, hi," Kinsie said with a friendly smile. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I heard the music from the hallway and wanted to see where it was coming from."

Her eyes briefly settled on the miniature gramophone before returning to the two girls.

"I've never seen one that small before. It's really cool."

Looking around the ballroom once more, Kinsie couldn't help smiling.

"This room is amazing. It almost feels like an actual Christmas ball."
