Spring King.

As a previously skeptic to the whole concept of school-organized balls and events, as someone who had grown up at the heart of it—real balls and galas— Camille was getting progressively more familiar with the concept. The appeal was still non-existent, with little to no real stakes at play. However, to spend the evening subjecting himself to a “spring king” that was not him, was something Camille found more irritating than dominating a stage. That, after all, was everyday territory. In his mind, he and Esme had already won; the song they ought to be singing was merely pageant courtesy. A privilege, even, for the rest of them to be graced with Dôme épais le jasmin from Lakmé. To anyone who was remotely cultured in the fine arts, none of the pop songs could compare to one of the classics.

If anyone had enough interest to dive deep into the meaning of the song and lyrics, they would discover an unlikely love story of a High Priest daughter and a British officer. In this performance, he and Esme were not performing as star-crossed lovers, but as the girl and her servant collecting flowers by the riverbank. Thematically, it was perfectly suitable for the spring ball. Combined with the gorgeous flower arrangements that decorated the stage standing in the courtyard that had been dully grey the last few months, they’d paint quite a picture of the season. Unfathomably, Camille had let himself be forced into the servant’s role—an indignity for someone of his stature. However, still in the process of proving his devotion after the figure skating two months ago, he’d let Esme guilt-trip him with emotional blackmail into singing the lowly part of the duet. With a mildly sour taste in his mouth, mentally preparing for the upcoming performance, Camille reminded him of the bright side: it was wholly unlikely that anyone in the crowd had the faintest idea about the song's origin. To uneducated ears, it would only be a beautiful, professionally executed classic opera, not a public surrender to settle interpersonal dilemmas.

Of course, the universe had a funny way of introducing obstacles; one of the outsourced guests introduced her take on “La vie en Rose”, accent and pronunciation clearly betraying French heritage. While he tried his best to not overthink their choice of song, he couldn’t help but sag a fraction lower in his chair. If she was even half as self-absorbed as the heavily glossed lips and colored eyes suggested, Camille hoped she wouldn’t be paying attention to the meaning of the lyrics.

The competition continued with predictability. Perhaps they should have thought about something more creative, Camille thought when the probably tenth participant this evening finished singing a song. He clapped with the same absent-minded politeness as before, already half elsewhere. None of the renditions had truly blown his mind or captured his attention for more than a few seconds, before his mind inevitably wandered back to his and Esme’s upcoming song— worse: what he would say once the song was over. Those that did attract his eye had more appealing visuals than performance, with the exception of a Russian girl that had swung a sword around and encouraged the “warriors” to vote for her. The enthusiasm felt a bit over the top for the occasion, and he’d cast a subtle glance around the crowd to gauge if anyone else had thought the same. The choice of song was not his personal taste, but either way, her performance had been unique enough that he remembered it once she’d left.

If Camille hadn’t been running for the title himself, there were a few girls he would have considered voting for. Though with the most beautiful girl sitting right next to him, with veela beauty written into her DNA, his standards were high. A surprising number of participants had opted to dance, as well. As someone on the path to be a professional ballet dancer himself, he’d raised an eyebrow at all the “aspiring” ballerinas, quietly asking himself where this sudden influx of dancers had hailed from, and how he hadn’t met any of them before. One of the girls had turned the stage into an ice rink and performed a figure skating routine. He had to at least give her that it was creative, compared to everyone else following the status quo by singing or dancing, sometimes both at the same time.

Nevertheless, the only performance which caught his attention and warranted a stronger reaction out of him than dismissal or the occasional appreciation of a pretty face and dress, was when Harlan claimed the stage. He wore the suit his father had gotten him for the winter charity gala, which still looked tailored impeccably on his frame. He’d hated to admit it, but Harlan still looked good. The mere sight of him had made his posture straighten in his seat, suddenly alert. For a moment, he even considered that, with the way everyone was suddenly unveiling hidden talents, the other boy might as well start breakdancing on stage. Of course, nothing of the sort happened. Harlan delivered a cocky, and yet lackluster speech. Camille had rolled his eyes, even more so at the fact that he seemed to be well-liked, happy they were not on the same court to even be considered against each other. To lose against Harlan would have been a humiliation worse than being screamed at among hundreds of students at an international competition.

Their turn arrived. With his usual air of self-possession and casual confidence, he climbed the stairs up to the stage, hand raised to assist his partner without risking a wardrobe malfunction, or humiliation by tripping over her skirts. The last thing they needed in their quest to win the King and Queen title was another public scandal. The thought whether he should do an impromptu handsprint crossed his mind, just to truly ensure they stood out among the crowd, but not even his flamboyant personality could justify it. With their vigorous vocal training, their voices in harmonies would be enough of a showstopper without over-the-top acrobatics.

Skipping introductions entirely, they came to a halt just at the base of the stage. Turning towards Esme, side facing the audience, Camille smiled at her, as much for the crowd as it was in encouragement to them both. The string quartet began playing the familiar tune. Camille waved his wand, whispering, “Lepidterio” to hopefully conjure a stream of butterflies to join the scene. Shortly after, Esme took the higher line, while Camille settled comfortably into a lower, yet beautiful harmony. Simultaneously, they slowly claimed more of the stage, until they had reached its forefront. Surrounded by flowers and butterflies–some of them hopefully his own spellwork—they sang the Flower Duet until its end. His expression was relaxed—passionately animated where the lyrics allowed, and his execution was professional after years of training, on and off the stage.

Dragging out the final note in a perfected vibrato, his eyes lingered on his partner. When silence followed, he turned towards the audience.

“That was Dôme épais le jasmin—the Flower Duet, which we thought fit the evening perfectly.” Acting amused, he chuckled lightly and flashed the crowd a picture-perfect smile. “Performed by yours truly, Esme and Camille. If you’re going to remember anything from tonight, it’s this.”

He stepped closer to her, unhurried, and bent slightly to press a light kiss to her cheek. A gesture composed enough to pass as an impulsive act of affection, precise enough to clearly not be one. It had not been a part of their initial rehearsal, either way. Without waiting to gauge her reaction, he performed his last spell. “Orchideous.” If a bouquet of flowers appeared in his hand, he would hand them to Esme as though the outcome had never been in question at all.

The Hogwarts courtyard was not a place Esme had ever found particularly inspiring. It seemed, however, that whoever was in charge of organsing the Spring Ball this year was determined to change her mind on that. When Esme made her way out there this morning for one final dress rehearsal with Camille, she found that the stage had already been set up and decorated, far more elegantly than she could have expected. The dirty, worn stone, and the perpetually empty fountain were gone — or, well, not gone, but at least hidden behind a sight far more refined.

The stage was grand — it had enough space for at least ten people with an instrument each. The floor glistened, the surface lacquered, shiny, and the sides beckoned attention with white and red rose bushes alike in full bloom. Everything was framed by lengthy curtains of red velvet and golden trim, shimmering under the early spring sun. Tables for spectators were also set up with their own various bouquets of flowers: tulips, peonies, and daffodils among others. Even butterflies were flying about, enticed by all the plants and the pollen.

All seemed to be shaping up well, and, as Esme noted with no small amount of satisfaction, it matched what she and Camille were supposed to be singing perfectly — Dôme épais le jasmin from Lakmé, known to anyone even slightly less cultured as the Flower Duet. She had taken the part of the titular character herself, obviously. Though perhaps her and Camille could have opted to sing one of the more romantic pieces from the opera, played the part of friends or lovers, this one happened to be the most recognisable of Lakmé’s oeuvre.

Besides, though Esme would never admit it, even if pressed, there was something mildly amusing, satisfying, even, to have Camille sing the part of a servant.

Her feelings were not really still hurt by his betrayal two months ago; or, well, no, they were. A little. Esme just had far too much sense to continue holding the same grudge after being placated with not only words, but jewelry, too. Camille had taken it upon himself to give her a lovely apology and an equally lovely bracelet, sure. She was grateful, of course she was. That did not mean that when the time to choose their song came, Esme would not go quiet and turn her face away and refuse to make eye contact… until Camille conceded, and allowed the public indignity of taking a part far below his station; during a public pageant, no less. She would have felt worse about it if the boy hadn’t made her cry during an international event only a few weeks ago — about as unfortunately public as it got.

Camille would have to live through it. He had asked her to participate, after all — in his own way, anyway, basically announcing that they would have to do it together. Esme personally wouldn’t have cared (and still didn’t, really) about the notion of being “Spring Queen,” whatever that meant; but Camille seemed to hold the title in higher regard, and did not want to suffer the indignity of someone else winning it. So, Esme had resolved to help her friend, despite her own ambivalence. In part because yes, it was funny to see Camille rehearse the part of the help (Merlin forbid he ever found out that she thought so), and in part because she knew it would have made some other family and friends happy. She had to conquer the internal anxiety she felt about events one way or another, and what better way to learn than by doing?

The pageant itself was largely boring, really, Esme thought, watching yet another person go on stage to perform some lackluster pop song or dance routine that Camille could have done with his eyes closed. It’s not that she expected any better. She occupied her thoughts with mechanical rehearsal of both her part and general conduct: back straight, chin up, sing from your chest, proper vowels. At least singing with Camille helped her sharpen her French.

Once it was time for them to go on stage, Esme climbed the stairs from the back area up to the dais, assisted by Camille. She gently smoothed out the material of her skirt one final time before turning towards her partner to see him smiling at her — not particularly surprising, but it provided some small encouragement, stopping the word-vomit in her head momentarily. If she was going to do something nauseating, at the very least she was glad to be doing it with a friend. They did not do long speeches or introductions, trusting on pure vocals and musicality to carry them through the performance, which Esme was more than grateful for.

As the opening began to ring out through the courtyard, she inhaled deeply, anchoring her voice and searching for the note, and with not a single second’s delay, Esme began to sing, taking the higher line of the two. After her beginning verse, when it was time for Camille’s part, she opted to cast a spell matching his, as they had rehearsed. With her wand in hand, her wrist waves gently, gracefully, a whisper of “Lepidterio,” on her lips, hoping for the spell to work. No matter the result, she would continue singing — the show must go on, after all.

And go on it did; perfectly fine, too, if you were to ask Esme. They had made their way through the stage up to the front, and years of classical training did not fail Esme. It seemed that after her brief stint of inactivity and prefect-position-induced burnout, this might have been just what she needed to get back into it.

As silence fell, Esme allowed Camille to speak; as expected. they had agreed upon it beforehand, considering Merlin only knows Esme’s rather more reserved disposition. What she did not expect, however, was the kiss on the cheek — one moment she was listening to a speech that felt perfectly appropriate, calm, predictable, even — and the next, he was conjuring a bouquet, whispering a slight “Orchideous” before she could even react.

Fortunately for both of them, Esme was nothing if not perfectly well-mannered. No matter what the effect of the spell would be, she would accept what had happened with grace, and her and Camille would walk off together: confident with delivering a high class performance worthy of the Spring Royalty title.

If there was one thing that Dee was, it was deeply irrefutably undeniably irreversibly and unapologetically down to the core devoted to her best friend. To Aly, and to silly puns.

Honestly, she didn't care that much about winning the pageant, by herself. She'd had her fair share of glory, receiving the golden laurels back during the blossom ball in her second year, winning the Hexwizard chess game as King for the Hogwarts team, and more recently, the golden cauldron at the international potions championship. She'd never done it for the spotlight, more for the thrill of winning, of proving that she was the best at something - whatever it may be. The spring pageant, on the other hand, was arguably only about the spotlight, which by default should make it rather less than interesting to Dee.

She did, however, care very much about winning it with Aly. For multiple reasons. For one, they only had limited time left at the school, and Dee wanted to make the most of it. Almost more importantly, Aly deserved a fucking crown if she wanted it, and Dee would make sure she got it. Third, as mentioned before, Dee loved a good pun, and was fully willing to go to extreme lengths committing to a bit.

Hence, when they had seen the sign-up sheets and Dee had turned to Aly to see her best mate's brow twitch and lips curve, the matter had been done and decided. Dee had, just for the theatrics of it, dropped down to one knee right in the middle of the hallway, taken Aly's hand in both of hers, and demanded with full sincerity that Aly let her be the King to her Queen. Or Prince to her Princess or whatever. (Insert a metaphor here about one last hurrah before growing up that only barely makes sense because that's not how throne succession works.) She'd explained to her boyfriend the next day that she was going to ditch him at the ball to date her best friend instead. Madhup had, as per usual, been nothing but supportive.

Their campaign had been planned out late at night in their dorm room where their beds were always made so their pillows were next to each other for optimal late night whispering, and Dee had nearly fallen off her mattress from laughing too hard when they'd come up with their slogan. Now, after a few weeks of aggressive promotions, handing out posters and pins with both of their faces on them, smushed together, and said brilliant slogan printed below, and generally making sure that everyone at this godforsaken school knew that Aly was supposed to be Queen, she stepped out onto the floor for their performance dazzling in bronze, and made her way to center stage. She dipped into a deep bow, made graceful by years on the duelling stage - towards Aly, rather than the audience, but they would not know that. Aly had been right, it seemed like the setting was made for them. It was hard to spot her best mate among the flurry of butterflies, but Dee's eyes locked onto the blue morpho butterfly with ease. She smiled, then raised her hands in a delicate dramatic pose, and waited.

The generous dose of Strengthening Solution she had swallowed backstage ensured that she could catch Aly with ease when her friend fell through the air in a rush of blue fabric and sapphires. They whirled and spun, sometimes as a pair, sometimes Dee turned alone while a blue butterfly looped through the air around her, graceful movements interspersed with lifts and dips, and came to a stop just as the music ran out.

Grinning brightly, Dee held the pose just a moment longer, then joined Aly's shout, their timing eerily perfect. "Vote for Dee and Aly - we're a package DeAl!"

There were a lot of different people here, competing for the title. Linda looked around, trying to find Quentin. He could be somewhere here. Perhaps also preparing for showing something. She spent whole week thinking and planning, finally coming up with what she would perform. A song, a dance and guitar. The hardest part was to combine guitar with a sand drawing but she was determined to give it her best.

When it was her turn she went out to the stage. Hello everyone. My name is Linda Ramirez, 4th year Gryffindor. My performance will consist of three parts, song, dance, and guitar. There's a small surprise with the guitar performance, I hope you will find it interesting.
· · ───────────────── ·𖥸· ───────────────── · ·
Part 1 - Safe and Sound

The choice of the song wasn't easy, but after all she decided to sing "Safe and Sound". She started to sing it, giving it her emotions yet not overdoing it. Her voice was filling the air. Feeling of safety reaching everyone who was listening, even if they saw her for the first time in their lives.

Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound

She searched for Reyna in the audience. If she was somewhere here, would she feel that it had more special meaning for her? Linda hoped that all that was unspoken could reach her bestie and Quentin. Why she chose to sing this song? There was no particular reason. However, one of the reasons could be everything she went through with him. And everyone he went through without voicing it. As well as for her bestie to once again remind her, she was not alone. It also offered a healing for a hurt soul. Symbolic for the spring, bringing the new path and offering a brighter future. Whether she would win or not, didn't matter much at that moment. Now and here, she felt like this is already was far more than she could ever hope to achieve. Finally letting feelings find their way to be expressed and shared.

xx Part 2 - dance

With singing finished it was now time for the second part. With a last note fading away allowing the audience a brief moment to breathe and process what they heard, the new melody took its place. For the dance she had something that wasn't too outstanding, but was still beautiful to look at. She was dancing in freestyle, moving as if floating around. The story she was sharing through the movements was a story about friendship, support through the hard times, and a hope. For the better days to come. The dance was once again reminding that even after danger there will be peace.

Slow as if unsteady steps in the beginning gradually replaced with a sense of new hope. Spins and lifts at the end were gentle and floating. A shy and sad story turned to the happiness and safety. She was dancing alone without anyone to support her, yet it seemed like there was someone there. As if it was just a continuation of her singing, she had a story to tell and now was the best moment to share it.
· · ───────────────── ·𖥸· ───────────────── · ·

Part 3 - guitar

As the final spin ended, she paused briefly. For the final part she took the guitar and sat down. On the background she had a sand painting. As the guitar was enchanted to help her play the quiet hopeful melody, the sand was changing shapes. The melody felt warmer and carrying something that words would never be able to express. Adding meaningful story and more atmosphere. The sand story began with a guy surrounded by fire. A danger he suddenly found himself in. And a girl, sitting at school. Knowing only later about what happened, but unable to do anything about it except just being there for him. Later they are shown together, but he has trauma and she is worried about him. Gradually they reassure each other, relying on each other and working on creating a safe space. The healing will take time and she is ready to spend it with him. Parallel to this another story is happening as well. A girl, sitting alone in the darkness. Suddenly there's a shape coming closer with a light like a star, shining in the night sky. Another girl comes bringing a lantern. The shapes on it create a story of their own. The story where only happiness seems to exist. She offers a hug and two girls are walking out from the darkness to the bright forest. The end of two stories seems to be shared. Two girls and a boy could be seen together, walking the path to the bright future. Creatures, lights, and unspoken promises are awaiting them on their journey.

Whole performance didn't last too long, but now as it came to the end, Linda hoped that at least someone liked looking at it. I hope the story that you saw reminded you of someone in your life who can be like a safe light for you. Thank you for watching my performance.

Royalty. The concept in itself had never been appealing to Ebony Vetra. By no means did she chase the grandeur and ostentatious nature of the title. Further, the notion of royalty being hereditary and inherently monarchical was unappealing. The girl had recently come to terms with the view that any inherent privileges that one possesses is worthless, and that one does not deserve them. The title of Spring Royalty — or Queen — was different, however. It was in no way inherent or hereditary like royalty; it was earned through campaigning, through performing. Though that did not necessarily make it any more appealing, either, considering the false, performative façade that individuals tried to portray.

Seated in the Courtyard, it all seemed to be rooted awfully much in pretence and dramaticisms. All was a false front, a displayed illusion of what the performer desired to showcase — often the best side of themselves — in order to convince the audience to vote for them. It was almost politicised, in a way. A campaign. She recalled the campaigns that she had seen for the Minister for Magic post. Even as a child she had considered the campaigns to all be rooted in lies. Her very own father had worked for the Ministry once upon a time. How deceptive it was. Politicians would climb over the other, trampling friends and enemies alike, to achieve the power that they desired.

Hogwarts was no political battleground, of course. This Spring Royalty pageant was simply based upon the generic concept of a fun, friendly-fire competition between students, simultaneously allowing them to showcase their talents. There were no cynical or deceptive undertones to it whatsoever. But the girl and her blatant cynicism took fault with the naming of the event as “pageant” in itself; a pageant suggests flaunting one’s beauty. Was that what this event was about? Beauty, one’s exterior? If so, it was clear that all the Veelas would take the thrones (she shot a somewhat pointed glance at Lottie). If so, such an event was extremely shallow and superficial. Perhaps it was, however, an error in naming — an imprecise choice of diction — given the clear purpose of the event of displaying one’s talents and performing abilities.

And so the brunette sat, watching the performances of the large plethora of other performers. Some flaunted their dancing elegance; some brandished their swords and wands; some exhibited their angelic voices. And so she sat — wondering why she had decided to try her hand at this so-called “pageant”. Ostentatious these performances may be, but they sure were impressive, and she doubted she could compare to any of the preceding candidates. @Cassie Jiang's ballet recital almost made Ebony feel something akin to pride; she had watched the younger Ravenclaw practice several times in the Ballroom, and to say her movements were smooth and elegant were an understatement. In addition to being dramaticised, many of the performances seemed to be displaying some form of elegance. From the skillful display of vocals to the dancing to the spellcasting, all was graceful. It was only natural, of course, that individuals would prefer to display their most refined side.

Being who she was, she wasn’t quite capable of being so elegant — though her outfit suggested otherwise. The girl typically preferred wearing garments that prioritised comfort rather than exterior, but she had, perhaps coerced by whatever strange delusion that had possessed her to join this event at all, decided to wear a gown that exuded sophistication. The dark satin pooled around her feet, and her torso was adorned with sparkling substances. Seeing herself in such opulent attire was strange indeed, but the fabric was surprisingly comfortable to wear. Perhaps she could get used to this. Perhaps having on such an elegant dress would allow her to display a façade of elegance, just for her performance.

And then she was called. Stepping apprehensively as she climbed the stairs to the stage, she was cautious not to tread on the trailing fabric that was perhaps designed to be too long. Her hands were clutched around a large canvas that towered slightly above her height — they shook slightly upon her mounting of the stage, but it would not serve to betray her anxiousness unless one was of very close distance. Now standing before a sea of curious eyes, Ebony could feel the contractions of her heart speeding up, as if it was desperate to get enough blood into her head to prevent her from passing out. She opened her mouth to introduce herself, but no words were to escape the monster that was the girl’s own overthinking mind. Just simply standing in the presence of so many — let alone being stared at by so many — and further, let alone speaking to so many, was already an obstacle petrifying enough. It is suffice to say that introductory niceties were skipped over; into the performance she would dive, headfirst.

She was to perform her own version of elegance and dramaticism.

Setting the canvas on the floor of the stage, she began. The canvas was angled towards the audience so that they would be able to see the oeuvre in which she was about to produce. Not a chef-d’oeuvre — simply an oeuvre. She did not dare call her own works a masterpiece, nor did she possess the artistic skill to do so.

All was spilled upon the canvas in a blur of charcoal - a medium that she had been experimenting with. A line here, a blended splash there. Then and there, it seemed as though the world around her had faded to nothing. The audience’s gaze, the stage, the other candidates… they had all dissolved — in that moment, it was simply Ebony and her canvas, nothing more. It was almost like producing art in private; except it wasn’t private at all, of course. But it seemed like it. There was a sense of vulnerability to performing an activity that would normally be extremely intimate. It was almost cathartic as she moved her arms and body to reach the whole of the canvas, an emotional release; the lines that she had placed upon the canvas were — though the audience would not know it — a raw reflection of her innermost thoughts, her consciousness and cogitation materialised into something physical. There was something beautiful about carrying out this typically intimate process in the presence of an audience, a beauty that was unprecedented. Perhaps she should do this more. Performance art. It didn’t sound so bad now.

She finished in a short span of time, and stepped back to reveal a charcoal piece of a girl. A typical envisagement of a girl — except the area where the eyes would be were blurred in an almost blindfold-esque fashion.

That was the elegance. Now came the flare of dramaticism.

The girl drew her wand. “Sagitta.” The incantation was whispered.

An arrow was conjured from the tip of her wand and redirected towards the painting. It flew, in its typical parabolic curve, to land at the centre of the blurred eyes. An attack on the very notion of a muddled identity, a direct confrontation with such thoughts that plagued her.

Wand remained extended before her. “Incendio.” Again, whispered.

The canvas became engulfed in flames and then reduced to a charred mess of nothing. Ebony had thought of it as a dramatic finisher of sorts that she had felt obliged to include. But she knew it was more than that, because it felt good. It felt good to burn away the matter that served as a materialisation of her twisted insides. And the ephemerality of the piece, its fleeting existence, served as a reminder for the ephemerality of all things in life, that all would pass.

And with that, the girl walked off the stage, not a single word uttered to the audience. Words were unnecessary.

Spring Royalty — The Pageant W. Waltz

It was an interesting choice for Quentin to put his hat in the ring for the Spring Royalty court—he'd seen enough American movies to know how this worked. It was a popularity contest. The senior court was small but mighty, and so far, as he watched his competition take the stage, all of them were British. They had the home team advantage. More Hogwarts students would vote for them because more Hogwarts students were here. The math was simple.

Well, math was never Quentin's strong suit.

He was competitive. Now that was plain and simple. And the complex web of international student popularity and politics were not going to be topics he lingered on. A guy @Harlan Montgomery he recognized from Olympic hockey—how did he remember anyone at all after that knockout!—performed some spells. Sure, fine, but couldn't they all do that? His fellow hockey teammate, Ebony @Ebony Vetra, also did some spellcasting, but she lit something on fire. Now that was art. He stood up and gave her a big round of applause. Then came two older students who were probably the cream of the crop here at Hogwarts @Aly Salinger and @Dealla Prince, but Quentin had never heard of them. One of them turned into a butterfly, and yeah, okay, that was pretty cool.

Then there was @Linda Ramirez. She did a three-part act: song, dance, guitar. The whole gambit. By the end Quentin had tears in his eyes. He stood up and gave her a standing ovation, and continued long after the other people in the crowd had stopped clapping. Eventually he came to his senses and realized it was his turn.

"Hi. I'm Quentin. From Beauxbatons." He usually had a pretty good accent when speaking English, it had a strange American southern twang to it, but today, Quentin hammed up the French part of his accent, trying his best to sound specifically as Parisian as possible. He knew what the people wanted.
Then in quick succession: He performed a back flip, a front flip, and a sprint into a corkscrew flip. He took a bow.
"Thanks! Vote me, but also you really should mostly vote for Linda."

XXXXX𝓜ylo had no idea how on earth they had managed to get themselves into this situation. This situation entailing them standing on a stage, in front of way too many people, with nothing prepared and the look of a deer in headlights on their face.

It was worse than a nightmare.

Somehow @Maisie Gemmell and @Avis Greymond had managed to hide true nature of the paper they had signed their name onto, the one that stated that he would be in the running for spring royalty and not a volunteer sheet to help with tidying up. (Of course the two of them had known that Mylo would have signed up to help tidying, maybe he was a bit too predictable.)

However as soon as their name had been called Mylo had been ushered onto the aforementioned stage in a state of shock by their two tormentors friends, not allowing him the luxury of running away or even coming up with anything to do or say. Which is exactly where they found themselves now, half way to a pure state of panic and desperate to not show it too much.

What on earth would they even do. Most of Mylo's 'talents' weren't exactly suited for the stage and he absolutely wasn't about to start showing off his non-existent singing or dancing talents. The one thing he knew he could do wouldn't even work here as they hadn't brought any of his supplies, how on earth were you supposed to....

A previous performance by @Harlan Montgomery popped into their mind along with a few videos he had seen in the past of people creating photography art with light, maybe Mylo could do something after all.

Realising that he had probably been quiet for ever so slightly too long Mylo took a deep breath, violently pushing all of the panic, that had somehow not flowed over into the audience yet, back down into the depths of his mind. He'd have to deal with that at a later point and not have another breakdown which this time wouldn't be contained to just a good friend.

"Uhm.. Hi! I was not aware that I would be standing here today so sorry for the moment of silence, I have not prepared anything but I hope that what I've managed to come up with is entertaining enough to make up for that." They explain while grabbing his wand out of a pocket inside of his jacket and starting with the performance they hoped would be satisfactory, if they were already in a vulnerable position they might as well go all out.

Pointing their wand at the air in front of him Mylo cast Flagrante and started a performance that they had not been expecting to share with the world.

As fiery lines started appearing in the air Mylo felt that something was missing, the silence thickening alongside the fire and without conscious thought Mylo started talking.

"When I was 4 a miracle happened. My dads had welcomed another being into our household, one who's smile seemed to take up her entire face every time she looked at me." Mylo narrated, their first memory of Andrea popping into his mind, the absolutely blinding smile he had been graced with, something she hadn't lost in the years since. And as he talked their lines grew more confident, seemingly forgetting that he was standing in front of an audience wanting to share the joy that he feels whenever he thinks of his loved ones.

"One thing I could never have expected was how much brighter that smile would get. No matter how difficult things got or how sad she was, that smile only seemed to brighten, and with it everything around her seems to brighten as well."

Lines continued to appear in the previously clear sky, finishing off a drawing of Mylo's younger sister that even he had to admit was some of his best work. Her radiant smile somehow glowing even brighter the more they talked.

"Andrea, thank you for showing me how to appreciate the small things. That not everything has to be done slowly and precisely that not everything has to be perfect, and thank you for teaching me how to be a big sibling." He finished, taking a small step back to look at the finished product in front of them, Andrea in all her glory, a ball of chaos incarnate.

The sky was still so empty and there was still so much to say, so his performance was far from over. Once again pointing his wand at the space in front of him Mylo continued on, the world around him disappearing as he got into a familiar flow, lines coming quicker and more confident accompanied by a narration that seemed to be pulled directly from his heart line by line.

"You've been here all my life and for that I can't be more grateful. You cheered me on while I was learning how to ride my bike without stabilisers and lovingly cleaned my knee after a bad fall. You cheered me on when I succeeded and did so even harder when I didn't, you showed me what it means to be human and that it's okay to make mistakes. Thank you for teaching me nearly everything I know, for sitting through my rambles on whatever catches my interest at that moment, for allowing me the space to be myself."

Where there had once been empty air now two fiery portraits accompanied Andrea's.

"Thank you pa and dad for being my parents."

Now that they had started they couldn't stop, a need to continue bubbling up inside of him and pushing away any other thought that maybe his performance was going on for way to long (it hadn't been that long in reality, all of the drawings having appeared in a reasonably short time). And so once again their wand returned to an empty space in front of him, this time on it's way to draw another 3 portraits.

"We met in what might be considered quite an unconventional way, although now that I know you two better it really wasn't that unusual. You have shown me that it's okay to not constantly push myself, to be human and when to take a break. You have helped me improve myself in ways I wasn't aware I could, and have shown me that there is no such thing as perfection. Thanks to you I now have good school memories to override the bad ones, ones I will cherish forever, no matter how many times you've given me a heart attack because you seem incapable of doing things in a safe way. Thank you Avis and Maisie for being my best friends."

"I've never had an older sibling, but I think you're the closest I've gotten to that. You've showed me how to be strong and soft and that both can coexist, that it's not an either/or situation. You have allowed me the space to be vulnerable when I didn't know I needed to be and have retaught me what it means to care, not just for others but also for myself. You have showed me what I want to be like when I grow up, thank you for being my friend Rose." Mylo finishes, a portrait of @Rose Moon appearing alongside his other two friends.

Finally lowering his wand Mylo takes a full step back, taking in the full scope of the piece of art they had created for the first time.

5 portraits.

5 stories.

5 people who have played their part in shaping Mylo into the person who stood on stage.

"Thank you all for helping create the Mylo that I am today, I am forever grateful to have known you."

As the lines started disappearing the world started appearing, allowing Mylo to fully realise how personal the art they shared had been, preparing to have to shove the previously hidden panic back down.

The moment didn't come. Instead a sense of pride and peace had settled into his body, surprising him and allowing him to fully appreciate what he had done. Turning back towards the audience Mylo put his wand back into his pocket, a content smile on their face.

"Thank you for having me today, I hope you enjoy the rest of the ball." He stated, finishing off his performance.

Turning away and walking off the stage the last of the fiery lines slowly dissipated, taking the last bits of panic residing within Mylo with them.

────────────────────────────────
─────The sudden elegant world that Alex dived in that afternoon was not a usual thing to happen to nobody. Hundreds of magnificent flowers bloomed all over the Courtyard, spreading a calm beneficient energy to all the people inside it, performers or not. In her case, Alex was part of the vast group of Young performers. And how amazing and nerve worthy was the fact that she would stand on that gorgeus and huge stage, performing?

─────Alex always was absolutely talanted at keeping and preserving the song main vibe, when performing. As she was also particulary talented on effect, she thought that it might not be a problem. Her singing skills were much more than acceptable, even though she wasn't a rate case of excellence. She was already chill about the fact of performing alone in front of her coleagues and professors, with no anxiety attacking her mind at all. Totaly used to perform almost any genre of play, song or dance, due to multy-talanted acenstry, mainly from her maternal side. Every Chrismas, a group of children who lived on her house's suburbs dedicatedly and carefuly organized a long performance, lead by the two more experienced members. It happened that since 2023, Alex and her sister, Lily, were the organizers. But Alex could not think more about her past, at the moment she was in her present. Well, there was an exception: she was at the present, trying to plan the future. Or what she hoped that was the future.

─────After all, she was going to perform an extremely well-composed song. On her presentation, she wanted to show a couple of things that were difficult to combine. It was indispensable to her to have a performance that sparkled nostalgia and, at the same time, show her singing and visual skills.

─────With the type of nostalgic styled performance that Alex was trying to do, it was very difficult to reach hight notes, so she fastly tooked some music genres from her list. Another obstacle she had while preparing the performance, was that the majority of the old vibes styled songs were easily associated to dark shades of yellow, brown, and no more color. So, what is the problem? The problem was that Alex found every production which those were the base colors extremely boring and basic. She wanted to exel!, she wanted to... somehow inovate. Weeks before, after this thoughts came to her mind, the perfect song idea came to her mind... fastly. "Fastly" was not the correct word, but it was something similar.

─────End of beggining was a quite recent song, that mixed in a appealing way modern and nostalgic vibes. If well performed, it might capture attention. 'One of the best things' Alex thought 'is that the effects can easily have a cool palette of blue.' Yes, Alex really had something against 'brownish' standard performances.

─────Different people captured her attention and made her memorize some names of remarkable performers, to compliment them later. Althought they were clearly remarkable, no one did something that caused a totaly strong or unusual reaction, physycaly or mentaly, on Alex.

─────She was the next one on stage. Last-minute tuning "ahhhohhh", training "another version of me, I was in ittttt, I wave goodbye to the end of beginninggg", breathing and all done. Actually, she breathed again, more deeply, just because she wanted to - random habits.

♬end of beginning♬
─────Her steps in the stage were confident, echoing loudly. She was smiling, recognising several faces that were spread all ver the room. People could notice her white silk trousers and her matching coat, full of blue flowers, from vrios types. The public's attention also could be dragged to a huge collection of very different blue guitars, that had been previously subjected to levitating spells by STAFF members, being randomly distributed in the stage. As soon as she entered the stage, She picked one of those.

─────She was prepared when the soundtrack started to play and she accompanied it whith the guitar. Her eyes became a bit more closed then before, when her voice started to be heard by those persons, most of them smiling.

"Just one more tear to cry
One teardrop from my eye
You better save it for
The middle of the night
When things aren't black and white
Enter, Troubadour
"Remember twenty-four?"
And when I'm back in Chicago, I feel it
Another version of me, I was in it
I wave goodbye to the end of beginning
This song has started now
And you're just finding out
Now isn't that a laugh?
A major sacrifice
But clueless at the time
Enter, Caroline
"Just trust me, you'll be fine"
And when I'm back in Chicago, I feel it
Another version of me, I was in it
I wave goodbye to the end of beginning
(Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye)"

─────By this time, Alex started to use her coat to do some fun effects, wondering, almost dancing, around the stage and remembered to shout "Common', sing along!"
, with a welcoming hand gesture.

"You take the man out of the city, not the city out the man
You take the man out of the city, not the city out the man
You take the man out of the city, not the city out the man
You take the man out of the-"

─────Almost all the people - if not all of them - sang with her and clapped along the rhythm. Now, her hands were posing in a different way - open, like she was saying 'stop' and 'wait'. The hands didn't stay posed like that for more than five seconds, the welcoming gesture returned as she sang the chorus.

"And when I'm back in Chicago, I feel it
Another version of me, I was in it
Oh, I wave goodbye to the end of beginning
(Goodbye, goodbye)"

─────Her faced clearly reflected the success, but mainly the happiness that made her feel like she was exploding. "Thank you all!" She added, maybe to loud. "Thank you all for what you have done and for this magical moment. "

-THE END-

The afternoon had been anticipated with many gifted young performers; whether it was dancing, singing, or playing the instrument, everyone had showcased their secret talents on the stage with great exceptional presentations.

The first performer was Miss @Cassie Jiang. The third-year Ravenclaw had brought a wonderful six-act ballet drama, gracefully guiding audience members with her narration as she referenced multiple classic stories in her performance. The stories in the dance movements were a beautiful start to the pageant, and the audience clapped as she left the stage.

The second performer was Miss @Tina Carille. Greeting everyone with a bright smile and greeting, the three-piece act began with a vocal showcase, singing a muggle song, followed by a ballet performance on pointe, and finishing off with a contemporary dance. Perhaps it was because the previous act showcased a similar dance performance or because the intense performance segment had strained her ability to stay constant, because the audience remained nonchalant and quiet apart from a few claps. However, Tina finished the performance and ended with a sweet message.

Carrying a distinct air of confidence, Mister @Harlan Montgomery stepped onto the stage. With a simple and snarky greeting, the fourth-year boy captured the attention of the audience. Entertained gasps and satisfied nods filled the courtyard as Harlan cast a stunning Flagrate and inscribed the Hogwarts crest into the air. The roused audience applauded audibly at the skillful spell-casting and magical act.

The next candidate who stepped onto the stage was Miss @Natasha Blackwood. Introducing herself, the audience seemed to pay attention to the first musician of the night. The girl’s decision to gather song recommendations must have worked in her favor, because the performance went well! With an unexpected and chaotic gag joke and her expressive musicality on her instrument, Natasha Blackwood became a candidate to remember.

Next up, it was Miss @Eden Lorenz-Alves. The young girl from Castelobruxo sang Starman by David Bowie, winning the audience’s approval with her charming voice and energetic stage presence. Everyone could see her passion for the song and the artist, and with a final farewell in her native tongue, she successfully cemented herself as a worthy contender for the crown.

Stepping onto the stage next was Mister @Roland Domagoj Marin, whose eyes carried the fire of a performer’s thirst for applause. Startling and hooking the audience with a dramatic display of discarding his broom, Roland’s bold stage presence exploded when he cast a brilliant “levioso” and rose from the stage like a reborn phoenix. The applause was thunderous. Ending with just a word of farewell, the first-year easily propelled himself to the top ranks of the performances today.

Coming up next, Mister @Magnus Blackwood from Durmstrang stepped onto the stage; accompanying him was an electric guitar shining with metallic red and black color. His opening remark was impressive and energetic. He pulled out an amazing performance on the stage with punk spirit, livening up the atmosphere. The crowd was invested in this spellbinding show, making noise and acclamations.

The first-year Ravenclaw, Miss @Riley Bluescar, was the next performer. With a sweet smile, she gave the audience a lovely introduction of her performance; she would bring them a full length of three pieces—two songs, one dance, and a monologue. Her performance was excellent. She delivered the emotions in songs and choreography. The crowd was very moving. In the end, she ended her show with an endearing final call.

Miss @Ellie Randensmith, the second-year Hufflepuff, cheerfully introduced herself with confidence. The performance she put on was a contemporary dance with her singing the song, Riptide. Her flawless movement paired with her beautiful voice. The song and dance were done stunningly. The people under the stage clearly were mesmerized by Ellie. When she finished her performance and curtsied gracefully to them, they returned the great show with cheers.

The next was Miss @Skylar Blue, a first-year Gryffindor. After she was called up to the stage, she did a short but enough introduction. Then she drew the bow on her violin, melody flowing out from it. "Fairy Tale" by Alexander Rybak was the song she was singing. It was difficult to simultaneously play the violin and sing a song, yet Skylar did it wonderfully. With a gentle bow to the audience, the young Gryffindor exited the stage. The crowd gave her enthusiastic applause.

Miss @Liliya Starkova, who was from Durmstrang, started her show with a simple introduction. The determined gaze at the beginning silenced the crowd; they were holding their breath to see what would happen next. As the music started playing, her next movement came precisely and fiercely. The audience was in awe, eyes widening. She pointed the sword in her hand in different directions powerfully. Liliya had given the crowd a heartfelt showcase of her talent and her past experience. The strength lay within her movements, sword, and words. After a stunned silence, the crowd erupted in cheers for the Durmstrang girl.

The third-year Slytherin, Miss @Charlotte Winfield, initiated her performance with a gentle introduction. She had prepared a profound monologue from Midsummer Night's Dream for the crowd. The monologue was beautiful, as well as the performer herself. The work of Shakespeare infected the wizards and witches under the stage even if some of them hadn’t heard of him before. The audience paid great attention to the monologue. Upon finishing, though Charlotte was hurried off the stage, she had already left a strong impression in the people’s hearts.

The two seventh-year Ravenclaws, Miss @Aly Salinger and Miss @Dealla Prince, seemed to be inseparable before Dealla was called by their name, and then Aly was nowhere to be found. Instead of Aly, a beautiful blue butterfly had been flying around Dealla. The blue butterfly stayed on Dealla’s finger, and all of a sudden, the butterfly morphed into a human being, a witch; it was Aly! Dealla caught Aly steadily. The crowd gasped in wonder. After the beautiful transformation, the two Ravenclaws started dancing; their choreography was intense and refined at the same time. It was fascinating. At the end of their performance, they shouted a cute slogan and left the stage. The show was captivating. People applauded for several minutes with excitement.

The next to come on the stage was Miss @Tes Cadell, the first-year Slytherin. With a short announcement, she started her performance, casting Glacius on the stage, turning it into a rink. The routine was aggressive and sharp. Tes did it flawlessly. Yet the crowd remained silent for the show; maybe it was too innovative for them, even though it was a great performance.

Up next was Miss @Violette Corbeau, the first-year Beauxbatons student. Before her entrance, the smoke suddenly clouded the stage. The crowd was intrigued; they eagerly waited for the show to start. In the smokescreen, the notes from the piano flew out. The mist gradually dissipated and showed the girl in the center of the stage, playing the famous chanson, La Vie en Rose. The crowd gasped in awe as they saw her cast Pluvia Velo and Nix Facitur; the visual effect of the two charms combines wonderfully. She finished her performance with a seemingly genuine speech and left the stage. The crowd gave her enthusiastic cheers.

The next participant was Miss @Avery Gray, the second-year Gryffindor. She stepped onto the stage and presented her introduction for her show. She sang a Welsh lullaby, Ar Hyd y Nos. With a hint of nostalgia, she gave the audience her beautiful voice. In the middle of the song, she cast a butterfly-conjuring spell, butterflies coming out and fluttering in the air. The crowd was amazed by her performance and the amazing spellcasting.

At first, the first-year Slytherin, Miss @Chaewon Lee, looked a bit nervous. But when the music started, she became more assured and pulled out an exquisite choreography. Everyone could feel her fully immersed in her movements. The young talented girl combined dance and gymnastics moves; to the audience, it was really impressive. She finished her show with a powerful last sentence. The crowd cheered for her genuine performance.

The next was Miss @Jada Blake, the first-year Slytherin. One of the many talented musicians the audience was lucky enough to see this afternoon. Jada carried her flute with her. After a thorough introduction of her choice on the piece, Carmen Fantasy by François Borne, she started her performance. The execution was mesmerizing. When she finished the piece, the crowd gave her a round of applause and cheering.

Apparently, there were more duos in this pageant event. Mister @Camille De Varenne and Miss @Esme Hestridge came up to the stage with elegance. Without any introduction, the show had begun, with both of them casting Lepidterio. A certain number of butterflies had come out from Camille’s wand, yet an enormous number of them had flown out on Esme’s side, creating an impactful visual on stage, leaving the audience in awe, mouths open. The song they had prepared was Dôme épais le jasmin—the Flower Duet. Their voices combined together heavenly. At the end of the performance, Camille leaned forward to kiss Esme on her cheek, and cast Orchideous, a fresh bouquet appeared in his hand. This was a showstopper performance. It had blown the audience away; they burst into cheering. This must leave a strong impression on anyone watching it.

With a warming greeting, the fourth-year Gryffindor, Miss @Linda Ramirez, introduced her plan to the audience. The multitalented candidate prepared a performance consisting of three parts—song, dance, and guitar. Linda had excelled in each category she had shown. As she finished her last part, she said a heartfelt statement; some of the crowd even moved to tears.

The fifth-year Ravenclaw, Miss @Ebony Vetra, had created an astonishing painting of a beautiful girl with charcoal. The beauty of the painting awed the crowd. Yet no one would anticipate her next move, conjuring the arrows and shooting them at the painting. After the arrows, the fire shoots from Ebony’s wand, setting the beautiful painting on fire. It was almost like an intense version of Mono No Aware from Japan. The crowd was silent for a brief moment, and then they clapped their hands with widened eyes.

Mister @Quentin Gagné, a fifth-year student from Beauxbatons. With a concise and powerful introduction, he chose a distinct way to showcase his talent—acrobatics. It was so different from the other performances that some people showed surprised expressions with open mouths. They didn’t forget to give their round of applause.

The next up participant was @Mylo Atkins, the third-year Ravenclaw. At first, they kept silent for a moment, but soon they greeted the crowd. They showed a unique talent on the stage, which was painting the light in the air with their magic. They also gave a warm and touching speech about their loved ones. The wholesome scene made some audience members show genuine smiles and even tears. To be fair, it was too lovely not to shed some tears.

The first-year Gryffindor, Miss @Alex Adams, stepped onto the stage, greeting her audience with a warm smile. A collection of blue guitars floating on the stage, Alex grabbed one of them and started singing a wonderful song, End of Beginning. Her guitar and singing skills were impeccable. In the middle of her session, she even led the crowd to wave with her. The confidence exuded from her infected the crowd, and they all enjoyed the performance.

After the long hours of performance, the sun was setting at the very moment the event ended. Casting a warm golden glow to the courtyard. Some students still lingered at the venue; maybe they were thinking about all the great performances, or they were the performers too tired to leave the place. Nonetheless, everyone brought their best show. And the voting would begin soon after in the evening.
