Tatiana Contraire was one to have never been particularly fond of messes.

But that didn't mean she couldn't tolerate, probably even ignore it when it didn't concern her — but this?

It was everywhere.

She was not informed of this, this whole mess, she thought it was only a small infestation that was made in a cupboard or something, not like this! Where almost every single book and cranny had at least, like, five pygmy puffs of different colors inhabiting it.

She could see a strand of pink drift away through the air before it landed on her sleeve, she stared at it for a moment, taking time to let her expression fall into something between disbelief and irritation.

“You've got to be joking.”

With a small flick of her finger, she brushed it off, though the gesture felt pointless seeing that there were dozens, no, hundreds more floating through the classroom. They had clung onto walls, gathered in the edges of the floor and hovered in the air as if they had no intention whatsoever of ever just settling down.

Tatiana exhaled, steadying herself.

“This is absurd.”

Her eyes swept across the area, taking in all of the mess around the room. It wasn't just untidy — it was invasive. Everytime she tried taking a step further, the fluff would just begin to stir into motion, undoing whatever progress might've already been made.

—YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE CARDS YOU ARE DEALT; JUST THE WAY YOU PLAY THE HAND.

𝕬 core memory that stuck with her days in the Manor was her mum chastising away the disorders left behind by Estella. It wasn't that she was typically unorganized or she loved giving more work for the poor house elves, there were simply footsteps of chaos following her every actions. Velaria tried to the best of her ability to dissect it, to diminish it. All the more she tried, all the more Estella became worse. And a surprise to none, discipline was not one of her virtues. She read somewhere that your room shows the state of your mind, or something along the lines, and it couldn't be more true. Even on her best days, her room looked like a storm had passed over, with such disruption it looked akin to a crime scene. But there was a strange familiarity in the little clutters, there was no repulsion. In fact, she loved it. Somehow it felt more authentic, more her. Perhaps that could explain the amusement she felt when faced with an avalanche of pink.

Everywhere she looked, there was a mass of fluff surrounding her. To her, it was as if cherry blossoms and fluff made an unpleasant alliance and had a violent rupture. One could say it was beautiful even if it wasn't currently evading her vision and space. Violent pink halted her train of thought, like basking in Lethe, momentarily stunning her into silence and losing her trace of thoughts. Hesitantly, her hand sought out for a singular particle floating upon air, and immediately softness was felt. It was something like candy floss, but much thicker. The fragments of amusement shifted to delight, coughs and laughs tangled in one. Though from the eyes of another, it nearly looked like hysteria.

After what seemed like a second—but probably more— her senses partially returned. It was probably the aftereffects of pygmypuffs shedding. It was slightly surprising, she didn't know they shed to such extent. She was about to dabble away once more, when she heard a tone of disbelief floating through the air more than the fluff, which froze her actions. How could she possibly not realize there was someone else here? Was she too lost in her own amusement that she failed to recognize a presence? Tilting her head ever so slowly, she was met with a belle of sorts.“ Oh. Did I interrupt you? ” Of course she did. What a stupid question to ask. Before carmine could tint her skin more, she turned towards the current problem —or delight— at hand. “ Messy little things, aren't they? ” If one listened too closely, they could hear notes of joy at her words. But it was not a shared opinion, it seemed. If the pure irritation on the girl's face was any indication, the fact that she didn't enjoy the fluffy company was evident.

Glancing back at her, the young troublemaker let her eyes sweep over once again. She was definitely a sight to behold, chestnut waves and alluring presence. Locks resembling the warmth of autumn, complexion carrying the slight gold of the evening sun. From her appearance, she must've be a first year as well, though one she didn't see much around. But that was on her. Her months on Hogwarts were extremely ordinary, most time spent on lessons and dorms. It was somewhat concerning, she was not usually a reserved person, quite the opposite. But she found herself reclusive to most, with few interactions and even less acquaintances. Not at all what she hoped for her first year in hogwarts. She had yet to fully discover the ancient castle, yes, but even so things were painfully plain. With a resolution to break out of whatever this shell was, she looked towards the puff with determination. Maybe she should start cleaning up the delightful wreckage.

The violet fibers collected around Crystal's ankles like a silly wave of pastel death, so different from her usual serious attitude in the castle's halls. This girl used to write manifestos about social justice and prepare herself for the biting winds of the highlands. Now, she has to walk through a field of weaponized lint. It was a silly problem, a fluffy, lavender uprising that completely ignored her sense of order and her political determination. Each step was as if she was walking through a dream that had turned soft, a sweet rebellion that threatened to entomb the ground beneath her. Crystal expected the world to consist of harsh realities and pointy things. This soft, mad world was not a reality, and it felt like an attack to her.

She felt a mix of disbelief and irritation toward the girl with a portrait-of-nobility look. The irritation stems from how ridiculous it is to keep a semblance of dignity when the air is essentially just sugar and buoyancy. The pose of the girl with chestnut hair and the pose of Crystal showed the same internal irritation. There is a difference in disbelief when just trying to find an air that is not the typical whimsy of plush and grape flavor. The girl’s expression showed disbelief and a longing for a rational world, and that combination is something Crystal also felt. Crystal saw more joy in the chaos that Estella seemed to be experiencing.

Crystal then turned to the stranger and in a dry, but almost humorous way, told the girl with chestnut hair that she spent the better part of a month trying to argue that we needed more air. The case with the chestnut hair girl was that it was a pity Crystal never used the word air in relative terms and said it was almost, a sentence in an Aesop's fable kind of way, in exactly 'not' true, but faux air. There was a lot of plainness and a very literal sense of the universe having irony. A very plush, literal upholstery, and very cushioned, sense of reality. Crystal began to walk toward the nearest window, wading with great effort in the surreal violet.

The situation was impossible, but Crystal’s mobilization instinct was already activated. Crystal was all about logistics. She pushed and pulled with great accuracy. The materials of the problem did not matter. If the environment was going to be filled with imaginary, fluffy, and colorful dust, she would be the one to find the shovel. The problem, in this case, was the atmosphere. The medium was the imaginary fluffy dust. The absurdity of the problem did not alter its solution.

''The draft should pull the lighter fibers out toward the courtyard.” she called back as she reached for the heavy iron latch. The cold metal was far too grounded of a presence for the reality of the plush room. “Unless, of course, you’re both finding the 'giant pillow' aesthetic particularly conducive to your afternoon plans. Personally, I’d like to be able to see my own feet before dinner to confirm they haven't been turned into pom-poms by this ridiculous environmental hazard.''

Crystal bodged her shoulders against the window, the curtain's design causing the hinges to groan as she tried to open the window. The Highland air was bound to look completely transformed as the curtain's violet fabric was blown about like a blizzard. Action was better than nothing at all, even a semi-acted choice like battling with the window against the curtain's design. After enough attempts, the window lock clicked, giving way with a sharp metallic sound. It was finally the window. The air blew through as the curtain's design calmed.

She did not respond immediately.

Not to the laughter nor to the quiet hysteria that was threaded through Estella's tone; not even to the sharp groan of metal as Crystal forced the window open. Instead, she stood still for a moment longer, watching — observing.

The moment the latch had given away, a rush of air swept the room, stirring the suspended fluff into motion. It lifted, scattered, swirled, and spread, momentarily chaotic, but undeniably changed. Tatiana's gaze followed this movement with careful attention, mentally noting that the lighter fibers drifted towards the opening while the others simply just dispersed aimlessly.

Inefficient — but still useful.

“Good,” she said at last, her voice even. Not quite praise but not that condescending either. Her eyes shifted toward Crystal for a second, acknowledging the action before returning back to the problem at hand. Then, she leisurely adjusted her stance, stepping slightly forward into the moving current of air.

“Though incomplete.”

Her tone carried a quiet, clinical sharpness, not a criticism, but almost like leader pointing out something and offering her own observations. “The airflow disrupts the density, though it lacks control; it scatters more than it removes.

A pause.

Then, with a swift flick of her wrist, drawing an 'S' in the air — “Scourgify.”

This time, the spell was different; not rushed nor broad, but deliberate. Instead of simply clearing what was in front of her, Tatiana guided her wand, angling it subtly as the gathered fluff was drawn into a more concentrated stream, nudged towards the open window rather than dispersing uselessly back into the room.

It worked.

But not perfectly; there were still stray strands resisting, clinging stubbornly to surfaces, but there wasi a difference. A small section of the room, however narrow, was beginning to clear out.

Tatiana lowered her wand slightly, eyes narrowing as she assessed the result, “Better...”. Her eyes flicked, briefly, toward Estella, whom was still far too amused by the situation. “For the record,” she added, her tone cool but not entirely unkind, “this isn't decoration.”

Then, quieter, almost to herself, “It's accumulation.”

She stepped forward again, continuing the controlled motion, refining her technique; each cast became more refined, her movements economical and intentional.

She did not take over nor direct them, instead, she spoke, her voice calm, inviting them onto the conversation, “If we coordinate the direction,” her eyes still on the drifting fibres, “we can clear this faster.” Her head tilted slightly, “Otherwise we'll be here all day.”
