Family Recipes for Disaster

Morning of 5th September 2019
It was late, she had no idea what time it was but it was definitely the middle of the night. It was past her bedtime, to say the least. In fact, it was past midnight too and become the early hours of the fifth. She should have been asleep. But she could not sleep. Sighing, Hjørdis crawled out of bed, knowing that sleep was just going to elude her tonight. Memories of her grandparents and her family came to her. Perhaps she ought to have taken the day off to go visit some relatives, that would have been a good idea. Unfortunately, the school year had pretty much just started so it made very little sense to actually take the day off. Not that Hjørdis had actually stopped working. Bar about one week during the summer holidays, she pretty much worked throughout it, organising the summer camp.
Jeger yawned but nuzzled into her, "Get some sleep, I'll be back," She replied softly to him as she gently patted him. With that, she got out of bed herself and tucked the bengal into her bed as he seemed keen on staying there.
Throwing on a jumper to fight the slightly chilly weather within the castle walls, Hjørdis tied her hair into a ponytail, too lazy to bother to actually do anything pretty with it for once. Her hand briefly touched the necklace she was wearing, a heart pendant necklace - the sort with a photo inside. Her eyes scanned her dresser for a moment before putting on a bracelet full of charms. She was dressed in jeans and heels, with make up on her face to cover the fact that she looked tired, within ten minutes, making her way out of her office.
She paused, her eyes falling down to the figure by her side. She sighed softly, laughing a little, "I guess you're not going to leave me alone, huh?" She asked him as she shook her head playfully, "Alright, fine, you win." Hjørdis continued with a smile on her face, resuming her walk through the corridors with her cat by her side. The tapping of her heels echoed throughout the walls as she walked through them. It was very quiet, peaceful even. She appreciated it. Good to see that students were not breaking curfew on their first week. 'Freshers' Week was always the most intense.
The Head of Slytherin pushed open the door to the kitchens, holding it open for the cat following closely behind her. She scanned the room. It was unexpectedly empty. What sane person would be up at this hour unless they were patrolling or actually doing something productive (or mischievous)? In her arms, she was carrying a large book. It had an aging look to it but it was still in a good condition. She placed it down on a counter, sighing softly as her fingers ran over the cover.
Leaning over the counter, she dropped her elbows on it. There was no need to remain fully composed or straight, there was no one around, not even a single house elf in sight. She flipped the book open carefully, as her eyes scanned the words on each page. They were recipes, many of them. Most were not written in English nor in her handwriting. She looked through them, trying to work out which one she should go with. There were plenty of choices, after all. Pausing every so often to ponder on the choice, "You'd have liked that one, dad..." She whispered to herself, a hint of sadness in her voice before glancing towards Jeger, perched on a stool nearby, wondering what she was doing, "I think he would have liked it..." She repeated towards Jeger, in a slightly more cheerful tone, giving him a soft smile.

Family Recipes for Disaster

Checking the cupboard in his office, the poor Head of House was only met with a few cobwebs in the back rather than any food he had been hunting for. He grumbled whilst rubbing his unshaven chin, the man made his way back to the bedroom. The man put on some trousers a T-shirt and a jumper for quick comfort, grabbing his shoes along the way towards the door. His wand stuck between his teeth whilst pulling the shoes over his feet, the professor checked if any students were awake. They shouldn't be, but you never knew with these fools...
The trip to the kitchens was quiet. At this hour no one should have been awake save for whoever did their patrols this time of the day. Poor soul. The early hours like this were often the boring parts during these runs. Nothing ever happened at 2AM around this place. Luckily so he imagined. He couldn't think of a worse time at night for things to get excited. But, for now there was only one thing on the badger's mind. Food! With his tummy rumbling horribly loud it felt like a lion had escaped its dorm and began to growl at the rats down here in the basement.
Jump! Doc had a song stuck in his head. His hips started to sway to the beat in his head. No one was there, he had the castle all to himself. Shuffle to the left, shuffle to the right. For my love.

Arms pumping in the air as his head bopped about. He slammed his back against the wall as he cried out along with the song. Reaching his arms for the ceiling sky, his hair got messed up and stuck out in all directions. Feet sliding over the stone tiles, he twirled around as he made a jump on the higher note. Finger guns were pointing about as he passed locked storerooms on his way to the kitchen till he halted by the door.
He drummed in the air as he mouthed every part of the lyrics along. Waving his hair through the air, he bumped open the door with his but as he entered. Eyes shut, he shuffled forward. His hand would point around the room as he danced in a circle to turn around until he opened his eyes again and...

"Nora..."

From the corner of her eyes, she saw a door open. Her head instantly snapped to the entering figure, wondering if it was a student attempting to break the rules. She kind of expected that to, to be honest. Patrols usually did not end up in the kitchen, unless they were her and lived a life of being permanently hungry for food. Hjørdis blinked. It was not a student. The familiar sight of the Head of Hufflepuff entered her vision. He was an odd man, to say the least. They had known each other for a few months now and... honestly, he always seemed to have a thing for the theatrics. What she did not expect, however, that this was him naturally - when no one else was around. Because from what she could see, he had yet to see that she was actually standing there.
Hjørdis blinked some more. Just watching the man... dance? Could that be called dancing? She could not help but wonder what song he had in his head. The desire to laugh hysterically at the sight bubbled inside her. It was so hard to control herself. Of everything she expected in today, seeing a Caradoc Browne burst into the kitchens dancing was definitely not one of them. Was he whispering the lyrics to Jump (for your Love)?
The edges of her lips were being pulled at. Holding in her laughter was killing her. Oh gosh. What was he even doing? She had no idea but the desire to hold this over his head for the longest time was overwhelming. Every microsecond that the Hufflepuff Head continued, the more she felt like she was losing control. It was far too hard to control her laughter, that just wanted to burst out at the sight.
She was sleep deprived, that's what she wanted to blame it on. Either way, he had definitely succeeded in cheering her up - even though he had no idea nor any intention to do so. It took him a few moments to open his eyes, found himself pointing at her. "Caradoc..."
She held a blank expression on her face for a few moments, just blinking at him. It may have even been a minute. She had no idea. Jeger was propped up from his stool, just peering over the table and also staring at the man. Mostly because the cat was curious as to who the figure was. Caradoc would be faced with both of them, just staring and blinking at him for a few moments.
But it became too much. Her hand quickly found its way to her mouth, covering it but it was too late. The laughter escaped, "I- I'm- so- sorry, b-but I- I- can't-" Hjørdis explained breathlessly through her laughter. She could not control herself, it was just way too funny. Blame the lack of sleep. Either way, her laughter filled the quiet of the kitchens. She could not look at him, it just made her laugh more.

Caradoc wanted to punch the air after seeing her face stare directly at him. Instead clapping his hands together as a fin to his impromtu performance. "Nora. Right." He cleared his throat as he looked around the room. There was no one else here except for her and her cat. Who was seemingly judging his performance from afar as well. The Head of Slytherin bursted into a giggle after a failed attempt at constraint. Not able to deny the silliness of the situation, Doc was forced to allow himself laughing along.
Stretching his arms out to Nora, he tried to find words to say but they did not come, causing him to only lengthen his awkward entrance. The cat wasn't helping either. They were both staring at him just standing there. "Well... euh.. I-" He stammered scratching his head. He nearly forgot the reason he had come here. "Cookies! I- euh... was looking for something small to, you know, nibble..." Yeah, that didn't turn out for the better. Fool.
He noticed a large book in front of her. Stepping closer whilst still trying to make complete sentences in his head, he figured the best way to divert her attention was to point out the obvious matter she was inspecting in the room. "So, what's that?"
His head was red as a beet. He did not dare to look her in the eye this time around as was more intent on changing topic as fast as he could rather than suffer one second longer than he already was. Who the hell was awake during this hour? Well, he knew Nora was an early bird though, but this was just out of control if she actually got up around this hour every day.

It took a few moments to catch her breath but the smile was still on her expression, unable to regain control. Silently blaming the lack of sleep and the unexpectedness of the whole situation, Hjørdis wrote her outburst of emotion off as not her fault. Of all things, that was certainly not expected. Her hand covered her face again, trying to fight back the laughter bubbling underneath the surface. Oh gosh, this was certainly a sign that she needed sleep, if nothing else.
Quirking an eyebrow, she lowered her hand after gaining some self-control and glanced over to him. The man was standing there with stretched arms... without saying anything. It was certainly odd. She waited for him to expand on whatever he was doing. Hjørdis blinked some more before smirking. "Wow, you have a way with words, Mister Browne," She teased, commenting on his lack thereof, "It's almost as impressive as that hella sexy dancing of yours." Hjørdis could not help herself, she just had to make fun of him for it. She even used the word 'hella' just for the occasion. It was definitely dad dancing if nothing else but she had to wonder why he was prancing around the rooms dancing at such a time. Was this a daily occurrence?
The whole situation was so entertaining that she did not bother to even question why the man wanted to eat cookies in the middle of the night. Then again, she was up with the intention of baking - was that much better? Well, she had not been intending to actually eat the sugar in the middle of the night so perhaps. Her eyes flickered down to the book that he pointed. His tactic was not even remotely subtle. Nothing will make her forget what just happened but she humoured him, nonetheless, "Family recipe book," She replied honestly.
Hjørdis paused for a second, before deciding to give him more than that after teasing him so much, "My gran would bake something new every year... Just thought I would see if anything inspired me, I guess," She replied, a moment where her eyes flickered down with a hint of sadness before looking at his beet red face. It lifted her spirits, if nothing else.
"So... what was that?" She asked him in return, lifting her finger and swirling it in the air in the direction of the door he entered through - the smirk visible on her face again.
This was certainly not how she expected her day to start but... it lifted her from her previous low spirits a little. Or at least, distracted her enough to forget about everything, even if it was just for a moment.

Her sarcasm would sting as if he were bitten in the chest. Gritting his teeth under an awkward smile. Raising his eyebrows and shaking his head he'd maintain a bright red complexion as he toured the room's perimeter. "It would help if you stopped giggling, you know?" He chuckled half-heartedly. Trying to get the situation's focus on anything other than him, he quickly took a seat across from Nora at the table. Staring from the fire to the cat, who was judging him just as much as she did, he'd purse his lips and avoid eyecontact with the other Head of House.
As Nora explained what she was holding, he tried reading some of the words upside down. A confused frown would rather quickly appear on the man's face. First he entered the room dancing as if his life depended on it and now he couldn't even manage to read anymore. Before he could say anything though, Nora pointed a finger towards the door. The twirling finger and that sly smirk gave plenty for Doc to stare at. Clicking his tongue as his eyes offered her a dull look that screamed Seriously?
"I... happened to feel a desire for one small cookie." He explained. "You know, a little snack. So I came to check if the House elves maybe left a few." He realised he did not explain the dancing at all. Knowing her better by now, he knew she would tease him forever if he didn't. "Me and my daughter often dance around the house. If everyone's asleep. I don't see why I couldn't in the empty halls..."
Of course it still was ridiculous. Burrying half his face behind his hand, he let his elbows rest on the table. His blue eyes would meet hers as he triedto stay serious. Sadly he broke almost instantly. "Yes, I am an idiot... Sometimes!" Correcting himself quickly before she considered him worse for company. "I mean, I can always show you a few moves miss Jensen." He smirked.

"Oh, but you're so funny," Hjørdis teased as she calmed down and stopped laughing, gathering some self-control. Laughing, not giggling. But she did not bother to argue it. She was too busy mocking him to turn this conversation to her. The smile on her face was quickly replaced by a smirk. It was likely not much better but it would do.
The way he looked at her - the utterly unimpressed look - just made her smirk a little more. Irritating him was actually rather entertaining. She probably should be attempting to make more friends at the castle than enemies but it was just far too easy to tease and mock him than to actually get to know him. She quirked an eyebrow at his explanation. He wanted a snack. Her eyes searched the kitchens, she had actually no idea if there was any leftovers. That was not something she could help him with. "You wait till everyone's asleep to dance? Shame, I'm sure everyone would love to see... whatever that was..." She teased, wondering what even took place in the badger house.
Honestly, she could see him leading karaoke sessions with all of the badgers surrounding him and dancing along. It would be sickeningly sweet. But she could certainly see it. She smirked a little more as he called himself an idiot. Yes. She knew that much. Only sometimes though? Well, that was certainly an improvement. Quirking an eyebrow, he was... bluffing right? He had to be. Well, no, he did not have to be. But after his embarrassment and the beet red look on his face, was he really going to continue to dance? "Sure," Hjørdis responded, deciding to call his bluff mostly to see if it was one or not, "Show me those dad moves." She added in the most teasing voice she could manage.
Throwing him a bone, she shrugged lightly, "I have no idea if there's cookies around but... I could make some if you wanted? I can't decide what to bake anyway... So I guess if you have any suggestions...?" Hjørdis offered, a little awkwardly. She was intending on baking regardless but she really did not know what to bake. Since she had no preference - or kind of wanted everything - she figured she might as well make something he wanted. Well, assuming he wanted to eat something she made. He probably did not. Wait why did she even offer it? It was a little weird to cook for your colleague in the middle of the night, was it not? Or was this cooking for herself since she had aimed to do that regardless? Hjørdis had no idea but her brain made her feel a little unprofessional and awkward for even asking.

"Only if you're dancing with me." Caradoc winked at the lady as he got up and leaned over the table to look more closely in the book. He had no expectation for Nora to cross that line without a few drinks. From what he had seen that night in the three broomsticks, she was hard to get moving. And he was subtly (well, not so subtly) enjoying that little piece of knowledge he had.
Looking over the book (upside down still), there still was not a single word he was able to read upside down. "Is this in some scandinavian language?" He frowned, looking at her. "I figured you were Irish, or at least partially." He realised there really was next to nothing he knew about her other than that she could sing when down a few drinks. An odd bit of information to have on a colleague he'd know to be a professional, yet here they were. "Are you from around there? You said this was your gran's book?" He sat back down quietly as he listened intently to what she'd reply.
The thought of family was something that Caradoc cherished. After all, he had his own little family back home. And while he was not close to admitting it, but he did love his parents and siblings. They were a pain in the ass of course, christmas was hell. But they were his kin in the end. It was nice to think of Nora having a home, after their night at the bar. He felt she might have been rather alone. Knowing she lived in Hogsmeade now, had made him wonder if perhaps she would one day wish to stay for dinner. He was sure 'nora would think her cool. The mere thought of seeing her excited again was enough to have Doc grinning.
For once he seemed to keep his mouth shut as his eyes watched her intently. Leaning on his resting arms, he'd almost look like a schoolboy again, ready for his History of Magic lesson.

Gosh dernit, he flipped the tables. Whilst she was very curious to see what he would do if she actually called his bluff, she was not entertaining the idea of dancing in the middle of the night in the kitchens. "In your dreams, pal," Hjørdis replied clicking her tongue. She had absolutely zero intention of dancing with him, "Besides, I wanted to see your dad moves, not your tango," She added, making it clear she was not interested in doing the tango with him.
Hjørdis blinked as he spoke - a moment of surprise hitting her face. It was a flicker before her blank expression took over again. One of the first things most professors found out about her was her heritage. Her name was a big giveaway. She had kind of assumed he would have been privy to that information before now. They had been working together for around four months or so. Honestly, she was convinced they had spoken about this - hell, she knew she had spoken in Irish to him. Surely the whole conversation had come up, at some point, no? But apparently not.
She nodded, confirming the answers to his questions, "Yes, more specifically Norwegian - my father's side. My mother's side is Irish, however." It felt a little odd, admittedly, that she was here actually being open about her life. That was something she had not done in the ten years prior to Hogwarts. She was a very private person, for many reasons, until she walked through these doors a year ago. It was not a sudden change, of course. But she had spent the past year gradually opening up to people, honestly answering their questions about her life, actually telling people her name - the real one.
It was still not a feeling she had gotten used to but she pushed past it and continued, "I did work in Norway for some years, before moving to UK. But no, I spent my childhood in Africa." Hjørdis paused for a moment, pretty sure that they had spoken about the fact that she had not actually attended Hogwarts. She could not recall if she specified a place but, now he would have been able to figure it out. It was the same school was Benoit and Galim.
Turning the book slightly, so he could see it better, she showed him a page that he would definitely not understand unless he could read Norwegian. However, the handwriting on it was a little wobbly, frail. It was the very cute handwriting of her grandmother's - her age showing in the handwriting. She then flipped to the front. The first page read 'The Jensen family recipes' in an uncial calligraphy font that was rather elegant. "I have added some additions since but yes, most of these recipes were hers..." Hjørdis turned the book back, and busied herself by flipping through it - not entirely sure why he was watching her so intently. It was a little off putting. Of course, she was rather beautiful so it was not a surprise but that was not why he was watching her.

"Well I knew the Irish part." He nodded with a grin. "Hard to ignore the bits and pieces you dropped in our little chat at the bar." He winked at her before looking over to the book. "That is of course, not mentioning the entire song you sang back there." This time, he'd keep his eyes on the book. Knowing full well, if he'd lift his head up, the possibility he'd be met with a glare was very real. Not that it stopped him from conjuring a narrow smirk in the corner of his mouth.
He wiggled his nose a little as she mentioned Norway and a job. Considering she took a job there, he could draw his own conclusions on where the family moved first. "Was this the auror job then?" Looking back up from the book with a more serious tone of voice. There was a lot of information she was giving him all of a sudden. Perhaps it was more the sleep talking than anything else? He didn't mind though, it was nice seeing her open up about things like this. A somewhat gentle smile would appear on the man's face as listed and documented what she told him in his head.
"How did you end up in Africa then? That's quite some travelling you've done in your lifetime already. Not that I would know how long that lifetime has been." He chuckled. He realised there was fairly little he knew of his colleague. A matter he felt that needed correcting in the future. There was no denying he did not mind her company, and she certainly knew how to hold a tune or two.
There was always this something about here. This one aspect he couldn't quite place. He recalled a train of thought about how he would have described her to his daughter as a moonlit princess, no, a queen. Empress? Perhaps too harsh a word. She was a professional, he could tell. There was grace and status connected to her pose. A facade meant to be kept up in the presence of children. It's why he was glad to see it dropped in a situation such as this. Nice to see a heart.
There had been a flicker of it on that night in the three broomsticks. He had seen it. But it was more child's play back then. Neither of them knew the other and were testing grounds. Or so he felt at least. Though she had not disappointed. Little 'Nora would love her. He could already imagine the discussion on whether she'd be allowed to dye her hair silvery white. "May I ask about your hair?" He asked quietly, perhaps too softly, more like a whisper. His eyes were those filled with wonder more than questions. It was an unusual encounter. Perhaps it was simply dyed, but he figured there might be story or two tied to that as well. Regardless, it would keep the conversation rolling.
Tapping his fingers on the book without looking, he picked a random recipe and presented it to her. "This one."
