A strictly in-character "journal" written in letter form.
These will be from Peri's perspective. He may leave out key (incriminating) details
since he's writing to his parents, but these will serve as vague summaries of his journey.
November
Dear Mum and Dad,
I missed you a great deal when the train left the station. I'd felt really ready for the trip, but then I didn't. I was so unsure of everything all at once that I couldn't even answer the Trolly Lady when she asked if I wanted sweets. I was lucky though. A really helpful girl named Halston joined my cart, and she asked for two of everything! It made me realize I was worrying too much.
I was worried all over again when I got to the Hat though. It mentioned both of you, but I didn't want to be sorted into either of your houses just because we are family. I wanted to be sorted into mine- the one meant for me, if that makes sense. When I told the Hat that, it made me a Ravenclaw! I remembered Mum saying their dormitories have the best view of the grounds out of them all and could hardly wait to see it for myself. I saw the girl from the train get sorted into Gryffidor, but I am sure that doesn't mean we can't still spend time together someday.
There are more students here than I'd imagined. I didn't know how to find someone specific, so instead, I decided to sign up for Quill Pals. Was that a program back when you attended? You submit your name and are paired with a student based on your interests. I was paired with another Ravenclaw named August Auggie. He's brilliant. I told him I wanted to be an Auror someday, and he didn't know what he wanted to be, but that he likes animals. I said that instead of working at a muggle zoo, he should join the Ministry too and be in the Beasts department. I asked if he would want to be an animagi like I'm going to be. Auggie said that he would become a frog if he could, and if I do become a bird, I can tell him about the sky and he'll tell me all about the water. He's incredibly kind and our letters make me feel less homesick. I hope to find other people who want to work in the Ministry. Maybe someday, we'll all work together.
The first class I attended was Charms. It was INCREDIBLE. We learned how to cast Tarantellegra and Reparo! I felt really grand when I could finally cast magic, but flying class did not go so well. I wanted to be an excellent flyer like Dad, though I'm not so sure I'm up to it. I would like to be better at the broom. If I'm ever going to become a bird animagi with wings, I should at least be able to fly a stick. Later I will ask for help in my House. I didn't understand the point of the Houses before. Not entirely. I thought it was all just organization. But this month, I did an errand for a professor- picking and drying herbs just like back home!- and was awarded House points. I took on the errand for chocolate frogs, but the points made me feel fantastic. I'm not sure why. All I'm certain of is that I do want to get more for Ravenclaw.
My first month here has gone very well overall. Please don't worry. I miss home, but Hogwarts is everything I'd dreamed of and then some. Soon, I will visit the library and go to my first Quidditch match. I will write again then!
Love,
Pericles
My dear boy,
As you are sick for home, home is sick for you. I cannot quite say it has become "hushed" here, as you were never necessarily a "boisterous tenant", but your absence has manifested as a tangible emptiness. Know that we miss you just as much, but we are perfectly proud, and it hardly matters to us whether or not you were sorted into either of our Houses. I can say, however, that your mother is especially pleased. I wish we could have been by you for your introduction to the Hat, but consider these monumental events- your ride upon the Express, your sorting, your first spells- as cobblestones on your path towards true wizardry (and independence).
Hogwarts is a fine school. Your years there will shape the mage you become, thus I encourage you to continue establishing connections, but perhaps try to make more friends in person. "Quill Pals" sounds like a charming program, though you would do well to consider communicating with those around you. I believe the sensation you described is called comradery. Do not shirk it: take pride in your House. Consider investing yourself in a club, or continuing to take on errands, only start seeking those which involve groups. Your mother means to send you something to take with you to Quidditch.
Again, she and I are proud of you, Pericles. We will look forward to what we hope will be monthly accounts, yes?
We are with you always.
-Father

December
Dear Mum and Dad,
When the month started, I wasn't doing a very good job of getting involved like you said I should. There was an opening on the Quidditch team, but I didn't want to try and improve my flying while a group of people were counting on me to do well, so I didn't apply. There was also an opening in my House for a new prefect, but the thought of being responsible for others (when I am still so new here) was intimidating. I didn't try for that either, but I promise I have reached out in other ways! I started small and took on a task of raking in a group for sickles. Most students kept to their own, but the prefect Griseldis who arranged it was very nice and invited us all to a party later on. Another girl asked for my help finishing her raking, and she was really kind too. I also met a prefect named Xailah in the library and helped her study for something- hags! Not that we are doing anything unsafe like interacting with hags, but it was nice to be able to help someone, and I learned many new things too.
I've even begun looking into clubs! A new Frog Choir is forming here at Hogwarts, so I've signed up for an audition. There is a group called the Fruits of Knowledge Association for tutoring or being tutored, and since I am doing well in Charms but rubbish at flying I suppose I could do both. I will try to do something a little bit bigger soon: a position is opening up in the school paper, and while writing isn't as exciting as Quidditch or impressive as Prefecting, it is somewhere I think I could be useful. There's one more: a club called Spells Wands and Games. Someone sent me a poster for it. Don't worry! S.W.A.G sounds like a fully sanctioned, perfectly safe group for folks to play and practice magic in. I will accept the invitation and it should be an opportunity to have fun while becoming a better caster.
I still miss you both, but everything is going wonderfully.
Love,
Peri
PS: Thank you mum for the Dissimulator! It made a great blue eagle right before the game, which was really beautiful.

February
Pericles,
The January edition of the Daily Prophet featured the headline "Hogwarts in Chaos." I had to hear of the two dead part-giants which invaded a school ball, attempted to kidnap one of your peers, and were "beaten to death by the students" from an old paper. Why did you not tell us of this when we wrote last month? Your mother and I received no notice from the school stating you were harmed, yet the absence of news is hardly a comfort, and as I write we are worried sick. While I regretted letting you stay at school as we tended to family in India, this crisis and lack of correspondence has convinced me it is a risk we cannot afford on future Hogwarts holidays. Are the students as manic as this makes them out to be? Did you witness this madness? I demand that you respond promptly. Find Fala before she leaves the owlery, and send word if you are well.
-Father
Father,
Please don't be upset. I am so sorry I didn't write sooner. I didn't want you to worry, but it sounds as though that only made matters worse. The ball hasn't effected me at all, as I didn't even attend, because you know how dances make me tired- I never know who I'm supposed to dance with next, picking partners makes me anxious, and I always remember that open punch bowls are a liability. For the entire night, I was safe studying in the dorms. I missed you all over the winter holiday, but I know your trip was important. Know that this school is very important to me. I'm doing everything I can to stay safe, learn, and to make friends, which is going well. I haven't met any murderous people, I think. No one here has tried to harm me in any way. Please let me stay through the Spring? I'll be completely cautious.
I promise you have nothing to worry about.
- Peri

March
[quote]Dear Mum and Dad,
I made it into the Frog Choir mentioned in my December letter! In fact, since I'm already familiar with choir and chantsong, I got to be the Vice Principle! I was also accepted onto the school paper, The Headliner, as a sub-article writer. It's brilliant work. I've been trying to establish more interviews in my articles. That way, the voices of students and professors are published more often, featuring perspectives other than just my own. I've come up with a "club feature" section so as to highlight the many groups active across campus.
Speaking of collaborations, a nice boy named Pierre invited me to a group discussion on the Potter case. Several students got together to investigate the information at hand and to cross-reference observations. Our potions professor even joined in on the discussion! It was a really interesting meeting.
I've continued to attend errands. In one we made houses for toads out of pots, and in another we learned Chinese calligraphy while crafting paper lanterns. The professor hosting it taught us about a creature called The Nian Monster, but I'm not sure if it was a real monster or just a fable. I wrote that letter to mum on an International Witch's Day errand (I hope it found her well). These have been an excellent method by which to meet other students. There was a girl at that last one, Breana, who is a first-year Ravenclaw like me. She was funny and kind, but very nervous, so I'm hoping we can be friends and she'll start to feel more at home here. Any coins I've earned have been saved up in a jar. I thought long and hard about what you wrote... I've decided I'd like to buy a broom on my own. I've been going to Quidditch games, taking notes, so I think- once there's an opening- I'll try out after all. I've made a point to study every match I can. I'm still staying out of trouble too.
Missing you both,
- Pericles
