Flora and Fauna and Fancy
Backdated: Saturday, September 5, 2019 - Afternoon
After spending the morning - most of it anyway - in the library, trying to be a good student with little success, Charlie Cutting made his way down to the Great Hall for lunch. He sat at the Ravenclaw table with his housemates, enjoying a simple and light lunch of turkey sandwiches and crisps, washed down with pumpkin juice, a beverage he'd never heard of before starting at Hogwarts, but had quickly come to enjoy. After lunch, he knew he should go back to studying - it's what Ravenclaws seemingly did - but the weather outside was still calling him, tempting him, and he couldn't put it off all day long. The idea of spending a beautiful day indoors with nothing but a History of Magic essay to keep him company made his skin crawl. His father would have been pleased with that decision. Charles Sr. was a very 'school-is-for-learning' kind of guy, while Charlie was more along the lines of 'C's get degrees' or whatever the wizard equivalency was.
Stepping out onto the lawn after lunch, his essay was the last thing on his mind, though to be fair, it usually was. The sun shone brightly down on the young Ravenclaw as a warm and gentle breeze tousled his hair. The grounds were littered with students enjoying the nice weather: gossiping, playing games - were those marbles spraying the players? - and watching what appeared to be a rather large octopus or squid wave its long tentacles out of the water. Charlie was just pleased to be out of the castle for the afternoon. His morning hadn't been unbearable, but a relaxing Saturday was much preferred to one spent working, especially a Saturday as beautiful as this.
He found a tall and sturdy tree, one that was far enough away that he could relax as he wished, but not so far out that he couldn't keep an eye on the crowd. He'd only made three new friends thus far at Hogwarts, none of whom he saw now, but the Ravenclaw boy had a fair view in case any of them showed up. Until then, he leaned back against the trunk, closed his eyes, and listened to the leaves in the tree brush about in the wind.

While some of his classmates struggled harder than others with the question of how to spend their very first weekend at Hogwarts, to Kaden the answer was a no-brainer. Who in their right mind would hole themselves up in the library working on an essay for the most boring class in the history of, well, the history of magic itself? Instead, Kaden was drawn to the outdoors as he usually was on any warm day. Noticing that while the grounds had plenty of students lounging about, in contrast the greenhouses were almost completely abandoned. A mischievous smile crossed Kaden's lips before he darted into one of the greenhouses and emerged a few moments later with a flower that had caught his eye during his first Herbology class. Kaden was only about half-certain the flower was called aconite, but he was much more certain that it wasn't going to bite or sting and would, for the most part, act as a mundane flower.
Kaden smiled gently at the flower, then brought it close to his nose and inhaled. Completely scentless, though you wouldn't be able to tell from the way he exhaled and smiled at the pretty cluster of purple flowers. "Ahhhh," Kaden sighed happily as he let out his breath. "What a beautiful day."
Kaden held the flower's stem in his right hand as he walked along the Hogwarts grounds and begin to sing a soft, sweet tune. His still young and angelic voice sang a song of no words, only melody, as he strolled along. Though his demeanor would indicate he had not a care in the world and that he was paying attention to nothing but the song he sang and the warmth of the sun, in truth he was taking in his surroundings, waiting to see how those around him would react. Noticing a Ravenclaw boy his age sitting just beneath a nearby tree, Kaden made sure to walk past so the boy could hear his song.

The gentle sound of the branches and leaves of the tree rustling in the breeze danced in Charlie's ear, creating a sort of melody. It calmed him, eased him. Since the Sorting at the start of the week, Charlie had been certain the Sorting Hat had chosen wrong for him. Ravenclaws were supposed to be wise and clever, it had all be right there in the song, and all week long, his housemates - especially the upperclassmen - had been proving that to be more than true. It's what had made him try so hard to get ahead that morning in the library, but it just wasn't him. He belonged out here, under the shade of an old tree, listening to the leaves sing to him.
As the tree's melody swirled in his brain, he could have almost sworn the tree was quite actually alive. He could hear a soft, human voice working its way in, that caused his eyes to open and him to sit up straight. The sun was bright in his eyes before as they took a moment or two to adjust, and after a few seconds, an image appeared to him, that of young boy - or was it an angel? - with a purple flower in his hand. Why did he have such a strange flower with him? It did not look familiar to Charlie at all. And what was that tune he was singing to sweetly? He was intrigued, perplexed even, and he could not pull his eyes away from him no matter how hard he tried - not that he was trying very hard at all.

As Kaden sang his sweet song, his bright green eyes flickered in the Ravenclaw boy's direction. The boy was openly staring at him, the awe on his face unmistakable, the very look that made Kaden want to do nothing but perform for anyone who gazed upon him with that level of awe. But the fact that he was a cute boy certainly helped. Rather than continue to stroll, after Kaden walked past his one-man audience he doubled back and walked past him again, green eyes flickering in his direction once again. One more pass by, and it was clear the other boy had no desire to look away, which made Kaden smile.
As his song came to an end, Kaden slowly walked up to his new fan sitting beneath a tree. A soft blush crossed his face, adding a bit of a rosy color to his porcelain cheeks, followed by the smallest giggle. Kaden didn't act this way because he was shy or nervous around this boy he hadn't yet met, on the contrary, it was all part of his act. He had seen such behavior both in movies and in the daily activities of people, and he knew a soft blush and a giggle would make him unbearably cute. Extending his right hand towards the boy, Kaden held out the aconite flower to his one-man audience, offering it to him.
"For you." Kaden said in a sweet voice before giggling softly once more.

The blond boy walked by him not once, nor twice, but three times. He wasn't sure what it was, but Charlie's eyes couldn't look away. It was like a piece of art, the ones he'd seen on last year's field trip to the Leeds Museum, except unlike those boring, old paintings and sculptures, he could appreciate this far more. It was almost hypnotizing, the simple act, but as the blond's song faded away, he turned to Charlie, smiled, and extended out his hand. "For you."
Charlie looked at the purple flower in the other boy's hand. Such a strange gift to give to a stranger, a strange, thoughtful, beautiful gift. The corners of the Ravenclaw's mouth slowly curled up as he reached out and took the plant. "Thank you, but what's this for?" he asked, before immediately deciding that that had been rude, so very unspeakably rude to question such a gift. "I'm sorry, that was...um...well..." he stammered, looking around him. The boy had been so thoughtful to gift him with a flower, and here Charlie had nothing to give in return. That was until he saw a simple, yellow dandelion poking through the grass, which he picked without thinking and extended to the boy. "For you. I'm Charlie."

"Thank you, but what's this for? I'm sorry, that was...um...well..."
Kaden couldn't help but giggle as the boy named Charlie got all flustered by his presence. It was something Kaden was used to, especially when he turned up his charm that just came so naturally to him. Looks were only a part of the equation, of course, for the way he walked, the way he held himself, the amount he blushed, the volume at which he sang and giggled, and the way he batted his eyelashes were all subtle factors that Kaden utilized to his advantage to be as charming as possible. Noticing these small details were an important part of acting, and Kaden loved to act as much as he loved to sing and dance.
As Charlie presented him with a yellow dandelion he'd plucked from the ground beside him, Kaden let out a small gasp, as if slightly shocked but mostly pleased by the gift. "Oh my, thank you, Charlie! I love it!" Most would refer to the statement Kaden made as a lie, but Kaden preferred to think he wasn't lying, he was simply acting, an important distinction that few without a talent for the performance arts would understand, so Kaden decided. But really, how could anyone be excited about being handed the object closest to them as a 'gift'? Still, Kaden would not show even a hint of dissatisfaction... and in all honesty, he found Charlie's desire to present him with a gift endearing, so rather than leave it forgotten, Kaden tucked it into his hair and behind his ear.
"My name is Kaden Truell," he introduced himself, lingering on the 'L' sound at the end of his family name for a short moment. "May I sit with you, Charlie?"

He wanted to sit with him. He wanted to sit with him! The strange and mysterious blond boy had actually asked - or perhaps offered? - to sit beside him, simple Charlie Cutting, after their exchange of floral gifts. The boy, Kaden, had accepted his small yellow flower - a dandelion was a flower, right? - and tucked it gently, yet securely behind his ear, matching the golden hue of his blond locks. "Of course, please do, Kaden Truell." Just as Kaden had done before him, he too lingered on the "L" at the end of the boy's last name. It made his name much more fun and interesting to say. Truelllllllll. It wasn't something Charlie could do with his own name, as the holding of the -ing of Cutting would sound absolutely ridiculous.
There were a million questions he immediately wished to ask the boy: Where he came from, what house he was in, where he had learned to sing like that, if he would sing again for him. Charlie wondered if he and Kaden shared any classes together, though he was certain he would remember such a creature as this if he'd seen him before, even if he often failed to pay attention during his studies. "I must say, I'm not much a flower guy but this is..." he brought the flower to his nose and sniffed it, inhaling deeply, even though it did not give off much of a scent. "Wherever did you find it?"

Kaden did not need to be offered twice, gracefully moving from his spot and sitting beside the cute Ravenclaw boy who seemed far too eager to sit together, which the Hufflepuff found even more endearing. Almost as endearing as the way Charlie said his last name, copying the way he lingered on the last letter. Indeed, most other boys Kaden had met were not 'flower guys', though he would never understand why, but the appreciation Charlie showed for the flower he clutched in his hand made him wonder if that was true.
In response to Charlie's question, Kaden placed his index finger to his lips in a manner that one would use to tell someone else to be quiet. "It's a secret." Kaden replied, followed by a wink and another giggle. In reality, Kaden figured it was probably for the best that no one knew he had plucked the flower from one of the greenhouses just because it was pretty and for no other practical reason. He could imagine the expressions of disapproving professors in his mind, scolding him over how important the pretty flower was to make the 'Boring, Useless Long-Named Potion', but of course only after they'd torn off all the petals and leaves, crushed it into oblivion, and stripped it of everything that made it appealing and full of life.
"Are you sure you're not much of a flower guy?" Kaden asked. "The one you gave me is just so pretty, you could have fooled me into thinking you have a real eye for things that are just... gorgeous." Kaden added another giggle after these words, referring more to himself than the aconite flower or the dandelion in his hair. After all, Charlie had spent far longer with his eyes on him than on either of the two flowers.

The blond boy, Kaden, sat down beside him, swiftly and charmingly, and as Charlie asked his question about the purple flower, the other boy brought a single finger to his own lips. "It's a secret," he'd giggled with a wink. He wasn't sure if Kaden had mean to quell his intrigue or not, but all it did was make it grow instead. The flower was now his favorite thing in the world - or perhaps just his second favorite - and he wanted to know everything about it. Where it came from, what it was called, and how he was the one lucky enough to be given it by Kaden.
"Oh no, not really. I mean, Mum always had them around the house, but I don't know too much about them," he reiterated. "But that doesn't mean I don't recognize beauty when it's in front of me." His eyes widened and his cheeks flushed momentarily, as his mouth grew into a smile, his braces on full display. "Beauty in nature I mean. Flowers and trees and such." Just like the flower, he wanted to know about the boy too. "So tell me Kaden, just who are you? You're different from anyone else I've met at Hogwarts, or before Hogwarts."

Kaden couldn't help but giggle yet again as Charlie blushed and got all flustered, correcting himself to ensure he was talking about beauty in nature and not the beauty he couldn't seem to keep his eyes off of. "But we are in nature, are we not?" Kaden replied cheekily, taking note of the boy's braces. He had seen them before on other Muggle children when he attended Muggle school, before arriving at Hogwarts, and had learned they were meant to straighten teeth in the absence of magic. It was how Muggles kept their teeth as straight as witches and wizards, and the majority of actors in the movies and shows he watched (when he wasn't somewhere that didn't have working electricity like Hogwarts, of course) had likely worn them to attain their dazzling smiles.
"Just who am I?" Kaden repeated the question that was asked to him, turning to face Charlie properly with a glint of pride in his dazzling green eyes. "I already told you, I'm Kaden, silly." Kaden giggled and gently nudged Charlie's arm playfully. "I'm a singer, I'm a dancer, I'm an actor, but most of all, I'm just one-of-a-kind. You won't meet anyone else like me, not here nor anywhere else, not ever. Because no one else can be Kaden Truell... no one but me." Kaden smiled brightly at Charlie, loving every moment of the attention he was getting from the cute Ravenclaw boy.
"And what about you, Charlie? Just who are you?" Kaden turned the question back on him, poking him in the chest with his index finger playfully as he said the word 'you'.
