For the entire day Callie had barely managed to push down her excitement and never failed to find wonder in the smallest of details. After all, London was a far cry from anything she’d ever seen before back home in Inverness. The entire city moved at a pace unfamiliar to the young girl and was significantly louder than what she regarded as normal with a cacophony of different sounds filling her ears at every turn. However, despite how exciting London itself was Callie had much bigger things to experience in this brand-new adventure of hers.
As if the journey to the platform wasn’t exciting enough, Callie couldn’t help but let out a squeal of delight upon seeing the Hogwarts Express in front of her. The platform surrounding her was flooded with people from all walks of life, countless trunks and even a couple of caged owls which caught Callie’s curious eye. She spent longer than she’d ever be willing to admit taking in the sights surrounding her, wishing that her parents were nearby to unleash the cacophony of thoughts swirling around her head. It wasn’t until the trunk of another child accidentally bumped into her back that Callie was forced to spring into action, weaving her way through the crowds to board the train.
It didn’t take long for the small girl to duck and weave her way to the front of the crowd boarding the train with her suitcase trailing behind her haphazardly. Upon boarding the train Callie tentatively walked to the closest compartment only to find it filled with a group of strangers who she wasn’t yet brave enough to greet. So, she continued her quest for a seat until finally coming across an empty compartment, wasting no time in bursting through the door and tucking her suitcase under the red seats. For a moment the solitude was bliss…until Callie realised that she couldn’t survive an entire train journey without talking to someone. However, after bypassing so many compartments with other people in them, it was too awkward to suddenly move now! Callie didn’t yet have that kind of bravery in her, so she quietly resigned herself to sitting with her face pressed up against the window watching the crowds rush past. Crowd watching was enough to satiate the girl’s desire for something to pay attention to but if she was to spend this entire journey alone she’d likely go bananas.

The summer was eventful indeed for Thomas; after receiving his Hogwarts letter, and finding out that some of his friends had received them too, the months in Caerleon seemed to fly by with no sign of stopping. The triad was comprised of Sylvie O'Niell, Talulah Baines, and himself were a troublesome bunch, and now that they knew that they were wizards there was nonstop imagination and tomfoolery amongst the three. However, as his mother often remarked, it was probably a good thing that the lot of them were headed to Hogwarts together. The move was a big change from what they were collectively used to, and being able to stay in touch with some of their closest childhood companions would make the transition infinitely smoother. Thomas' Uncle, Donal Baines, impressed upon Thomas the fortune he had in knowing people before he even arrived.
As the three prepared for the wizarding world, Thomas' mother tried her best to support her son in every way she could. In that way, Thomas was different from the three; he grew up in an effectively Muggle household for as long as he could remember. He was thankful for his mother's attempts at educating herself (as much as she was able to learn, anyway), and promises to owl her son back whenever possible, but he still couldn't help but feel a bit different from his two friends. There was the excited anticipation that they all shared, but Thomas had a certain level of apprehension that no amount of reassurance was able to quench.
• • •
Which is why it sucked astronomically more when Thomas found himself separated from his friends at Platform 9¾. The two had eagerly rushed in at the encouragement of their parents, but Tommy found himself paralyzed with fear. He looked to his mother for reassurance, who seemed just as confused as he was, but she put on a brave face and patted the boy on the shoulder. After a brief, somewhat motivational speech, the boy looked at the wall with renewed confidence. With a fresh determination in his heart, spurred from a desire to wipe the familiar, sad smile off of his mother's face, Thomas raced through the wall and found it intangible! Just as he was lead to believe. At least that didn't end up being a surprise.
After coming to the panicked conclusion that he had, in fact, lost his friends probably for good, the boy made his way onto the train looking for a compartment with empty space. Tommy overheard numerous conversations as he went, peering into many that already seemed fairly full. Sorting, houses, family lineage, honor? Honestly, he didn't understand it much, but he made do. Thomas eventually came to an empty compartment (or at least, one that was nearly empty), and sat down. He eyed the girl somewhat hesitantly, having not bothered to introduce himself before getting seated, which made it considerably more awkward to proceed.
"Oh, hello. My name's Thomas. I'm an incoming first year, what about you?" The inquiry came with a soft, clearly nervous tone, betraying his otherwise confident exterior. Thomas didn't often mind a lot of change, but when it all came at once it was almost certainly overwhelming.

Phel stretched his arms in the air, holding back a yawn. The trip from Ireland to London had been atrociously long, and he was not exactly feeling like boarding the train for another day of travel. Of course, like any little wizard his age, he was excited about finally entering Hogwarts and learn about this magic his family had always been using around him; but he also would have appreciated a faster, more direct way of going to the school.
Diana's little hand was strongly holding Phel's. She had been crying a lot during the days before the trip, and could not really understand why her big brother had to leave her to go to school. The boy would surely miss his younger sibling. Not only did he appreciate being a part of this energetic, friendly duo that could be considered rare among most siblings; but he was also anxious about going to Hogwarts without knowing any other student. Confidence was not Phel's main asset, and having a friendly face around during the first day could have been greatly helpful.
As a response to his sister's apparent sadness, Phel reaffirmed his grip on her hand, as the family passed under King's Cross yellow archs.
__________
On the other side of the window, Diana was waving at Phel, with the expression of children when they try to hold their tears. Phel smiled at her, and had a last look at his parents who were standing behind her. While his mother, Mary, was busy discussing with one of her old classmates, his father, Eadric, was miming a bird with his fingers. Phel guffawed. His dad had been talking to him about the Ravenclaw house since the boy received his letter of acceptance to Hogwarts; it was of importance to Eadric, simply because he held pride in his son following his own footsteps.
The locomotive whistled; it was time to go. After one last goodbye, Phel turned back and moved forward in the carriage's corridor. His long wizard robe was trailing on the ground behind him, gathering the dust like a broom. He entered the first door on his left without having a look inside; he realised shortly after that the compartment was not empty.
- Hi, I'm Phel. Don't mind me, I just want to sit.
Feeling a little embarassed, but not scared, he decided to sit next to the boy, Thomas - Phel had heard him introducing himself while passing the door. Facing them was a short girl, with the biggest glasses Phel had ever seen. The spec was completely disproportionate on her face. Despite finding her look amusing, he made an effort to avoid smiling. It was not the right time to laugh at strangers, especially not when the said strangers could be sorted in the same house as him for the next seven years.
He waited for the girl to answer the question Thomas had just asked her, looking at the building of London through the compartment's window while waiting for an opportunity to join the conversation. They were probably the last houses he would see before a long time.

Callie was so engrossed in watching the hustle and bustle of the platform she hadn’t noticed the entry of the two boys into the compartment. Thomas’ greeting gave the small girl a fright, causing her to accidentally hit her head against the window, causing one of the legs of her glasses to snap. However, Callie didn’t look at all disturbed by the moment of clumsiness as she was accustomed to such misfortune plaguing her life, as any notorious clutz would be. Instead she merely let out a cheery laugh, hastily taped the glasses back together and placed them back on her face. The glasses themselves looked rather strange on her face thanks to her rather small size and had quite obviously been broken frequently judging by the tape holding them together.
“I’m such a clutz!” Callie giggled as she straightened the glasses on her face, only for them to become squint when she moved her head to the side. “Hey there! I’m Callie! I won’t lie to you, I’m so glad to meet another first year!” Callie was quite obviously an incredibly outgoing person and in contrast to Thomas did not seem to be nervous at all. “This entire thing is so exciting, right? At first, I was like how can magic even be real but now? I can’t wait to learn more about it! Do you think there’s a spell for fixing glasses? That would sure come in handy...” Callie blurted out rather quickly before allowing herself a brief pause when another boy entered the compartment.
It was lucky that Callie wasn’t an incredibly self-conscious person as compared to the other two she was a slight mess. The combination of broken glasses, ill-fitting robes and her often slightly rustled blonde hair didn’t portray the image of a put together individual. “Hi Phel! I’m Callie nice to meet you! Sorry, I was rambling again, aren’t I? I can’t help it; this is just so cool! I didn’t really know about magic until like…a month ago?” As she was muggle-born, Callie didn’t really know much about the entire wizarding world – as much was evident by her seemingly endless excitement. While she spoke to the two new arrivals Callie turned away from the window to face them fully, sitting cross-legged on the chair. Every so often she re-rolled her sleeves since they were quite long and fell down a lot.

"Oh, for sure. Everything's incredibly confusing in a delightful sort of way. I'm excited to figure all this stuff out..."
As Phel introduced himself and sat, Thomas scooted over in his seat to give his fellow first-year a bit of room. With Callie clearly took initiative in the conversation, the boy allowed himself a moment to relax. He'd initially been afraid that he'd accidentally end up seating himself with someone who was quiet, and his brain was all but starved for a conversation about the peculiarities of the wizarding world. There was so much to learn, it seemed, and he was thankful that he wasn't the only person on this train starting at a measly square one. A relieved smile crossed his features as Callie blabbered on and on, happy that he wasn't the only one sharing the sentiment of 'excited, but incredibly confused.'
If Thomas had any room to judge Callie's put-together-ness, he may have, but his own ill-fitting robes and mildly disheveled appearance weighed heavily on his perception of her, and all he noticed were the broken glasses. It was a question he could ask later; at the moment, more pressing concerns and exciting topics of conversation were tantalizingly close.
"Nice to meet you both, Callie and Phel," he began, making sure to be polite in acknowledging their greetings. "I definitely get that. I really don't know much about this whole... Hogwarts thing. But I'm determined to get to the bottom of it all as soon as possible." Thomas felt less awkward in admitting his own shortcomings, considering Callie had proudly displayed hers.

Not long after boarding the train did Elias find himself in somewhat of a sticky situation. Nearly every compartment that the boy looked in seemed to be filled to the brim with strangers, more often than not considerably older than he was. As he made his way down the train he spotted a few that were empty but that defied his goal. He needed to talk to at least one person before he arrived at Hogwarts. He couldn't know absolutely anybody. He needed some friends.
After what seemed like ages of searching in his mind he peaked through yet another glass window and spotted a compartment holding three young people who appeared to be about his age. Perfect. With a small knock on the door, Elias slid it open and peaked his head in.
"Excuse me," came the boys relatively stern voice (as stern as one's voice could be when considering they were 11 years old), "Do you all mind if I join you?"
As he spoke his eyes flickered from person to person inside the compartment, taking in their expressions and responses to his sudden arrival. Hopefully, they were nice enough and wouldn't mind sharing their space with him, if not he could always move on and continue his search for friends elsewhere.

Bingo. Phel found his occasion to join the conversation. He turned his eyes to the girl and looked directly into the glasses that she had just fixed.
- Nice to meet you, Callie. If you have any questions, just ask me. All my family is made of wizards and we have no Muggles, so magic is very natural to me...
He wanted to continue the sentence, but soon realised that he might have been offensive to the girl. Blood rushed to his face. If she didn't know what magic was before last month, that probably meant that she came from two Muggle parents... While Phel found weird that some children could grow up without any magic in their lives, he however had been educated to keep his opinions for himself. His words were not a personal attack on Callie... but they clearly were not polite enough. And Phel granted a great importance to politeness. He grumbled.
- Sorry...
He kept listening to Thomas while looking through the window. They were now out of London, probably in East Anglia. The smoke coming out of the locomotive was rising up in the air, miming the clouds take diverse forms in the sky. Phel hoped that the weather would remain similar once in Scotland, for he could not wait to see the reflection of the night sky upon Hogwart's lake. The boy was sure that he would contemplate it more than once in the next seven years of his life.
Another boy entered the compartment. Phel greeted him with a smile, while promising to himself in his head not to mention anything Muggle-related, just in case he was from the same background as Callie.
- Come in ! What's your name ?
With Callie and Thomas orientating the discussion on Hogwarts, and a newcomer in the discussion, Phel felt the need to get involved again.
- You might not know about it, but Hogwarts has got houses in which you get sorted. Do you have an idea of where you two will end up ? I hope I get sent to Gryffindor, I've only heard good things about it. My dad says I'll end up at Ravenclaw though...
While listening to their answers, Phel grabbed the bottom of his robe and managed to put it behind him, on the seat. He was now comfortably seated, ready to spend a long voyage - in good company, assuredly.

"I definitely get that. I really don't know much about this whole... Hogwarts thing. But I'm determined to get to the bottom of it all as soon as possible."
"You ever seen those old detective shows? We can be detectives and figure it out together!" Callie exclaimed with a toothy grim, using her hands to mimic a crude magnifying glass as if to emphasise her point. While Callie had embraced her general lack of any background within the wizarding world, part of her was glad someone else was in a similar boat. It was knowledge she found comfort in knowing she wasn't the only one wrapped up in a world she'd only recently found out about.
- Nice to meet you, Callie. If you have any questions, just ask me. All my family is made of wizards and we have no Muggles, so magic is very natural to me...
- Sorry...
"Sorry? What for that's cool as heck!" Callie giggled, entirely uncertain as to why Phel was bothering to apologise for saying such a thing. She didn't know much about the whole drama regarding muggles and didn't care for it either as the entire thing seemed incredibly dumb. Besides this meant she could harass Phel with her countless array of questions, which she had a significant amount of. "Hey you could be a detective too! All we need is deerstalker hats..you know, like Sherlock!" Callie's train of thought was cut off by the entry of Elias, who she greeted with a cheery smile and a wave.
"Excuse me," came the boys relatively stern voice (as stern as one's voice could be when considering they were 11 years old), "Do you all mind if I join you?"
"Of course not! Come join the party!" Callie shifted along the seat to give the others more room, causing the sleeve of her robe to fall down one again. She let out a mildly irritated huff as she watched the sleeve tumble down before carefully re-rolling it. "I'm Callie by the way! That's Phel and that's Thomas!" Callie pointed to Phel and Thomas as she said her names to clarify.
- You might not know about it, but Hogwarts has got houses in which you get sorted. Do you have an idea of where you two will end up ? I hope I get sent to Gryffindor, I've only heard good things about it. My dad says I'll end up at Ravenclaw though...
"I don't know....Slytherin seems scary, don't ya' think?" Callie wasn't sure what to make about all the different houses even after reading all about them multiple times. Thus far Ravenclaw seemed appealing but she couldn't help but like Hufflepuff largely due to the badger, which she found adorable. "I'm just gonna let the hat decide! Well it does that anyway but you get what I mean..." Callie trailed off a moment as another of her sleeves rolled down, causing her to let out another huff of annoyance. To try and prevent such a thing happening again she rested her hands firmly in her lap instead of speaking with her usual hand gestures. "What do you guys think?" Callie asked Thomas and Elias with a pleasantly curious smille.

Adonis had been rather excited for the past week ever since he received his letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was so hard the contain the joy and excitement he felt from the prospect of even attending Hogwarts. It meant he was a step closer on his journey towards becoming an Auror like his father for the Ministry of Magic, just the simple thought of participating in Potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts class had him feeling rather anxious. It was all too much to handle at once. Luckily, Adonis had the full support his family right beside him. He did feel bad for his younger brother though. Amadeus Thorn, his younger brother, was to be left alone now for a whole school year without anyone to keep him company, which was usually Adonis. He would see him next year though once he receives his letter, so Adonis didn't worry too much about him as it was only a year without him.
Upon arriving on Platform 9 3/4, Adonis took a good look at all the other students and their families standing beside him as they got ready to board the train. He noticed some of his friends and their pure-blood families, standing upright with a straight posture and a condescending look to some of the parents. He was glad his parents were different from some of the other pure-blood families and weren't stuck-up. Sure, they had rather good etiquette, of course. But they treated everyone as their equals and didn't discriminate. His father had gone down a different path from the rest of his family after all. As for his mother, her family had always been known as what the more fanatical pure-bloods would label "blood traitors".
The young Thorn gave his family one last hug and goodbye after his luggage was handled, before entering the train to begin his journey to Hogwarts. His friends had all gone on way before him as they arrived much earlier, so there was no space for him in there compartment. Which he didn't mind as it gave him the chance to meet new people. Adonis searched each compartment with haste, searching for an empty one or one that had space at least. Eventually, he found one with two spaces left luckily. "Hello, I'm Adonis Thorn. Do you mind if I sit here with the lot of you, please?" He asked the four of them, peeking his head in with a bright smile. "There's not many spaces left in the other compartments." Adonis made sure to present himself with a good posture and kept eye contact with each of them once at least.

At Phel's (in his opinion) unwarranted apology, Thomas raised a single brow but didn't comment. He noticed some of his friends who had been immersed in the world of wizardry prior to this moment acting the same way at times. Was it some sort of faux pas to talk about 'muggles' and your blood status? Something else to investigate, surely.
More and more people seemed to be entering the compartment by the minute. Thomas couldn't help but start to get just a bit anxious at how many people were there. He frowned for a moment, the expression betraying his discomfort, before a neutral expression was plastered over his face once more. It was all he could do to keep himself composed. At Elias' entry, he scooted over further, hoping Phel would do the same to accommodate the unfamiliar boy. When Adonis arrived, he assumed that he'd just take a seat next to Callie at this stage. Gosh, so much social etiquette went into all of this, it was starting to make Tommy's head spin.
"Oh, hi. Yes, there's plenty of room," he noted to Elias and Adonis.
His response to Phel's inquiry was a bit delayed, having been a bit distracted by the new arrivals. Thomas considered for a moment, he didn't know much about the houses aside from the limited reading he'd done before he got on the train, but from Sylvie and Tally's excited babbling, he could only really procure one answer. "I think I'd like to be in Gryffindor. I think I'm quite brave," even if his current state didn't make it seem like the case, "and it seems that a lot of heroes originate from there. Although Callie has a point, I guess, it's not really in our hands..."
