It had been a rather ordinary afternoon when Silas stumbled across the necklace. He had been jogging through the grounds, doing some of his normal exercises, when a glint had caught his eye. He had slowed down and then crouched beside it, reaching his hand out to part the grass and grab the shiny object. It was a silver locket — heart-shaped, with an E and some pretty designs carved onto its surfaces. With one fluid motion, he tucked it safely into his pocket, then stood up and went on his merry way. He didn’t bother to check if anyone was looking — it didn’t matter to him if they were. Clearly, if the necklace had been left behind, whoever it belonged to must not have cared that much, so he was perfectly justified in taking it. Obviously.

A few days had now passed since he had picked up the locket, and things were going pretty normally. He hadn’t knowingly encountered the owner of it yet, but, to be fair, he wasn’t looking for them, either. He didn’t intend to return the necklace. It wasn’t like he necessarily wanted it for himself, given the heart shape and floral pattern, but he just liked to have things, and maybe he could even sell it or something. He was currently sitting in the courtyard, absentmindedly swinging the locket around his fingers with a lazy kind of casualness, enjoying the way it felt as the chain moved. Cold brown eyes watched as people walked by, the Mancunian waiting — for what, exactly, he was not sure, but he was waiting all the same.

Anxiety came in wrecking waves, crashing down against the shore of her heart, tsunami threatening to flood her body completely. No no no no no no no no no no no no — war drums, echoing the frantic beatings of the organ pulsing against her ribcage, martelling each of her step as she trailed down the path she had previously sailed through — no no no no no no no no no no no no. Stormlit eyes flickered at every bush, every tree looming over this hellish path, every flower reflecting the sun's light, heat piercing through her neck and bringing her to her knees as crystal tears threatened to burst.

Having such a strong reaction to the loss of one's necklace would be deemed odd by the greater half of the population, one who wouldn't know, or care, about the emotive bagage this delicate item carried.

This necklace, each strand of silver carefully twisted and bended into the shape of a heart, was crafted in France, in the modest atelier of a modest man. Deeply enamoured with his wife, yet possessing no financial means of showing her his love, the elder man had spent hours bent over his atelier, gathering the purest pieces he could find, carefully melting each together until one day, she was gifted this silver heart locket, the bowels of such a sentimental item left bare for her to fill it with whatever her heart desired — which, it turned out, was a picture of the lovely couple.

One day, many years later, the jeweler and his wife, both wilted by the hands of Time, were sat in their coastal living room, their granddaughter joyfully rummaging into a wooden box of ancient heirlooms and items of a past time. Between love letters and dried flowers, she found a small navy box, and nested within it was the necklace. Marveled, she stared at it for hours, demanding the story of its making again, and again, fascinated by the pure love that poured from her grandparents' face each time one began to recall ancient times. At her next birthday, she noticed on top of the pile the very same blue box, of the exact hue of her gaze. Within it, the necklace, identical, only now an elegant E was carved on its surface, and a simply request — fill it with what you love. And so she did, tucking pictures of her parents, her grandparents, her pets, casting a locking charm to prevent its precious contents from spilling and cherishing it for many years to come.

Elena had absolutely no idea of how she had managed to lose it. The clasp must have broken during her daily promenade through the park, and she had only noticed its absence once close to the castle's walls, when the soothing gesture of clasping her hand against the pendant found but the void. After fruitless hours spent retracing her walk, she had resigned to the unthinkable — she had lost it.

Fervent believer of Fate, the moonchild decided to give herself a week to find it miraculously, before resorting to asking her elder friends if they perchance knew any location spell. Or learning once herself.

That was until at the turn of a hallway, a fortuitous change of path through the courtyard, that a flash of silver caught her eye. Fate. Relief flooded her entire being, and the weight she had been carrying these past few days lifted suddenly, the moon shining once more into a previously empty night. Making her way towards her saviour, a relieved smile twisting her rosy lips, she stopped before him, head tilting.

"Hi, I hope I am not disrupting your peace, but I believe that you have found my necklace?"
