So Much for Listening... PV Kayden Mae Killian

Everyone had those subjects that they were just truly indifferent about, the ones that no matter what, you really just couldn't care too much no matter how hard you tried. Lennox found that subject within Defense Against the Dark Arts, which, to many it seemed, was the most interesting class at the school. While she could appreciate the content, and how important the subject was, the Ravenclaw just couldn't grasp what was so exciting about the class.

This indifference truly showed itself in class, while the Professor would lecture, or ask the students to take notes. Lennox was never able to focus during class, choosing to doodle all over her parchment when the notes didn't seem as necessary, or simply staring off into space as the Professor lectured. That behavior was very much out of Lennox's character, normally the one that took too many notes, constantly asking questions or focusing in on the content, never allowing herself to even get slightly off task. But since the start of the year, Lennox found herself slowly drifting from the girl who constantly listened, to someone that could still feel like she could succeed, even if she did get a little off track. Granted, she still worried quite a bit, but hey. Baby steps.

The young girl had found herself particularly bored this class, finding herself looking around the room to see if anyone else was just as disinterested as she. With no immediate luck, she let out a quiet huff of air, frustrated that she didn't seem to find anyone else that found this just as redundant as she. Lennox rested her chin on her fist, her elbow propped up against the table. She had pulled her hair up out of her face for this class, knowing that in the previous, she had been too distracted by playing with it rather than acting like she was slightly paying attention. Though she found the class a bore, those opinions were not worth getting detention over, especially over something as silly as playing with her hair. However, she was now struggling with what exactly to do to keep herself entertained, needing to do something with her hands to avoid quite literally falling asleep.

After some back and forth with her inner conscience, Lennox found herself picking her quill up with her free hand, dipping it in her inkwell before pressing it to her notes, reluctantly listening to what was being said. Frankly, she'd much rather doodle, but she had already gone through a foot of parchment by just doodling on it during her less interesting classes. It was time to chill out on that front. The girl looked around once more, but her head quickly turned when she heard someone close by let out an exasperated sigh, eager to figure out who, too, was finding this class quite annoying.

The longer Defense Against the Dark Arts dragged on, the more Kayden Mae could feel herself losing focus. While she was genuinely trying her best to focus on the lecture, something about today had her attention locked solidly onto anything but the class itself. Whether it was because of the steady drizzle and dark clouds just outside the window or simply the fact that she'd struggled with the homework the night before, putting her off the subject even more, today she was simply not having it. Within ten minutes of the class beginning, she had resorted to she had arranged her things so that her pens were sticking out of her bag, which was resting on the floor beside her, and she had a sheet of parchment, filled with notes, done in a tiny, messy cursive, she had taken last class, laid out flat on the table. Careful to glance up every minute or so to, hopefully, give the impression she was listening, she started sketching in the margins.

In truth, Kayden Mae struggled with many of her classes, partly because she simply didn't understand them, but her lack of ability to focus unless she really wanted to was just as damaging. In most of her classes - all but Flying and Herbology, really - she passed her time mostly by napping (in History of Magic), drawing (Defense, Charms, and Transfiguration), and chatting (Astronomy and Potions). She often made promises to herself to change, especially after receiving grades that were barely passing, but it seemed that the moment she stepped into a classroom, these thoughts flew from her mind, and she couldn't help lapsing back into laziness.

The Gryffindor boy to her left gave her an amused look when she started winding a dragon's tail between the letters of her name, in the top right corner, and in playful retaliation, she abandoned the dragon in favor of outlining a small centaur with the same narrow brown eyes, sharp cheekbones, and black, silky hair of her house mate, standing in the top right corner. He had been watching out of the corner of his eye, and when she finished, nudging him by way of alert, he looked down completely and bit back a laugh. Just then, though, the girl on her other side, another house mate, tapped on her shoulder. When she turned, half-expectant of a compliment, she was surprised to find green eyes squinted disapprovingly at her.

"Stop doodling and start paying attention, before you lose us house points," she hissed at Kayden Mae, and turned away again before the brunette could reply. Heaving an exasperated sigh, Kayden Mae rolled her eyes and promptly went back to work, planning on continuing the lines of the dragon tail she'd left off on to stretch them up and into the body. She was distracted by a girl, two seats down on the boy's side, snapping her head up and looking around. Slightly startled, she offered an awkward wave and small smile. She was pretty sure she'd noticed her a few minutes ago, looking like her mind was anywhere but on the notes she was taking now.

"Hey," Kayden Mae offered after a moment in a stage whisper, leaning back in her seat to look at the Ravenclaw from behind the students between them, deciding that she wouldn't mind having someone to talk to. "You bored too?"

mentions a Ravenclaw NPC

After moving quite quickly, Lennox gave the girl she had caught the attention of an apologetic smile, feeling bad that she had startled her. Despite worrying she might have taken the Gryffindor aback, she was relieved when the girl spoke towards her, also indicating that she, too, was anywhere mentally but here.

"Yeah, totally. Having a full lecture on the colors of sparks should be a war crime," Lennox said in a hushed whisper, poking fun at the content of the lecture. However, as she leaned back to speak to the other student, one of her housemates shoved her chair back to block her views, the girl's blonde curls bouncing. The Ravenclaw girl to her right gave Lennox a dirty look, , to which Lennox rolled her eyes, flipping the other student off. She scooted her chair back farther, moving past her housemate, shrugging her shoulders at the Gryffindor girl to say, People, am I right?

Lennox's attention was then diverted to her notes, which she had now decided to dismiss. Frankly, the difference between the Red Sparks charm and the Green Sparks charm meant nothing to her. If you truly thought you were in enough danger, shouldn't you just set off the red sparks regardless, to attract the attention of those around you. The need for two was completely lost on her, and thus, so was her attention to the lesson.

The girl twirled her quill between her fingertips, looking up to the ceiling as if there would be some point of interest emblazoned within it. She'd be lying if she said she wasn't quite displeased at the lack thereof. Lennox glanced back to the Gryffindor, finding it much more interesting to talk with another bored party than to sit in her own misery. "I'm Lennox, by the way," She whispered, shooting daggers at her previously-annoyed housemate, daring her to try and cease the conversation again. Pleased with the blonde's complacency, the brunette smirked, crossing her arms against her chest. It seemed that being able to assert herself was working well for Lennox. She had yet to regret her decision to break from her shell, as it had yet to fail her.
