In the Kitchen Again
Madeline always loved working in the kitchen at her home with mum. When her mum was schooling Madeline at home she thought it would be a good idea, in addition to the usual primary subjects, to teach her how to move around the kitchen and how to prepare her ingredients and to properly read a recipe.
With mum's words still ringing in her ears as if she had just said them, Madeline eagerly went into the potions class in the dungeon and began to set up her work station. She placed her cauldron, textbook, quill, ink, parchment and wand all in front of her and eagerly awaited the Professor to begin the class.
Madeline, when you cook the most important thing is to have proper preparation. The two things ye need to do to properly prepare yourself for cooking anything, muggle food or a potion when ye are at Hogwarts, is to carefully read the instructions - at least 3 times before you begin. After the first time ye read the recipe/instruction you need to gather all of the needed ingredients, cauldron, and anything else needed. After the second time, order your ingredients in the order in which you will need them, and carefully crush (using the flat of your blade) the ingredients to get all of the juice from them before chopping or grinding. Make sure you know what ingredients go in whole, and which ones need to be carefully prepped. Lastly, after the third time you begin to prepare your cauldron and start the cook. Be careful to add each ingredient exactly as it says, and to stir just the amount and direction listed. Cooking can be really fun, and once your good at it, you can start experimenting - but that is only after you have mastered the initial recipe - this is not just for potions but for food as well. Master those recipes, and then you can start adding more garlic and onion, and whatever your nose thinks the dish needs, by then your nose will not lead you astray."

It was her first ever potions lesson. Her parents, her father especially, had told her all about it, it having been one of his favourite subjects. She felt her heart race with excitement, she was determined that she should enjoy this subject as well. She had some degree of experience, having baked a multitude of cakes and desserts at home but was eager to learn more.
She walked into class, finding an empty seat next to a girl with red hair. Her eyes darted up and down, quickly scanning her. Would they get along well? She already had a few friends but Azrael and Meave were in another class and Tes, her room mate, was sitting at another table. She sighed, sitting down, and began to lay out her equiptment. Cauldron, glass phials and scales were set out in front of her before she turned to her neighbour.
Hey, she said, playing absentmindedly with a loose strand of hair, I'm Jada and you are...
She waited for the girl to answer. Jada wasn't the best at starting conversations but, hey, it was worth a shot, the worst thing that could happen was that they wouldn't like each other. If that happened, this class would turn to hell but she was sure that everything would work out.

Madeline was still setting up her table when another girl, a Slytherin First Year with long braided dark hair, walked up to the table and began to set up her things next to her.
The girl said. This greeting caught Madeline off guard. Not because she did not want to meet new people here, but she was focused on her task, and she was more used to either being bullied or ignored by her peers back home that she had assumed it would be the same way here.βHey, Iβm Jada, and you are?β
She Jada a polite smile, while they both continued setting up their station. It would be beneficial to both of them if they got along well if they were going to be working together in class. Madeline asked while they continued,βIβm Madeline. Itβs nice to meet you.β
She took a quick breath and continued,βAre you as excited for Potions class as I am? I always loved working in the kitchen back home with my mum, and she always said that cooking was similar to doing potions.
she spoke faster as she went, beginning to ramble a little,βIβve read the entire textbook already twice through, though I have not actually made any potions yet. Mum always said it is important to make sure you are prepared and have read the recipe at least three times through before you begin cooking,
Madeline forced herself to stop talking and wait for a response. She knew she rambled when she was nervous and/or excited, and right now she was both. Hopefully she had not annoyed Jada too much with her rambling about how she had already read the text - why did she have to say that? Now this girl is going to think she is weird.βOr in this case itβs not cooking but making a potion. Have you read through the potion recipe for today yet?β

βIβm Madeline. Itβs nice to meet you.β She replied. Madeline, the name was neat. It sounded a little old fashioned to her but there was a certain elegance to it.
The girl continued: βAre you as excited for Potions class as I am? I always loved working in the kitchen back home with my mum, and she always said that cooking was similar to doing potions." Of course she was, who wouldn't be? Mixing ingredients together to create something that could cause instant laughter, love or sleep, definitely seemed like a fun way to spend one and a half hours doing. Much better than History of Magic or Herbology.
"Sure! I've baked a couple things before but not since I've been here. There's no need to with the house elves doing everything." The conversation seemed kind of pointless to her, she doubted anything would be achieved by the end of it. Or... maybe there was... she could always use a few more friends afterall.
βIβve read the entire textbook already twice through, though I have not actually made any potions yet. Mum always said it is important to make sure you are prepared and have read the recipe at least three times through before you begin cooking," Sure, Jada was excited but she didn't think her excitement was nearly as much as that of the girl in front of her. Reading through the textbook TWO TIMES!? Yes, she'd looked at it, maybe even skimmed it briefly, but having read through the entire textbook twice... That girl sure knew what she wanted. Besides the girl was speaking so quickly Jada was certain she would start hyperventilating.
Now speaking even faster she asked, βOr in this case itβs not cooking but making a potion. Have you read through the potion recipe for today yet?β She had but what difference would it make. She was about to read it again. Multiple times.
Kind of. she replied, You know, I've skimmed through it, not enough to be of use now though.
