The third year was sitting at the table in the Great Hall with a lot of space still available around him. That was something good about being there early as it would give one time to eat and people could easily approach him, if they wanted something. Technically he only just arrived a minute ago himself, but it did not change, that so far he could not spy anyone out who was familiar to him. That was why he just sat down at this rather empty area, to give people who knew him the chance to seek him out, if they wished to do just that.

Alan was reaching for some bread roll, that was in a basket in the middle of the table and placed some scrambled egg on his plate. He felt like a rather heavy breakfast, since he had skipped the dinner the day before, so that he could work on his present for Willow. He was sure that the girl would love the present or at least he hoped so! With a light smile he began to spread some butter on the bread roll and place a slice of cheese on top of it. It was going to be a yum and delicious breakfast!

Alan was wondering what the day would bring and if he would get to do anything fun the day, but sadly he also knew that there were classes again and he really would rather just be outside. At least his schedule would start with the Care of Magical Creatures and he was looking forward to that! It was one of his favorite classes, his favorite class where you did not get to use actual magic though. Alan just loved studying the creatures and learning from Griffith!

Alan had learned a lot from the professor already and has met a lot of creatures and he was just happy about that. He liked learning new things and this was the best way to learn. Learning by doing was all what Creature Care was about and the third year was sure that he would still learn a lot. With a big smile on his face he took a bite out of the bread roll that he had covered with a slice of cheese, happy to finally have something to fill his stomach with.

Ruka had woken up maybe a little too early that morning, but he couldn't help it.

For the first time in what felt like ages, he was feeling genuinely excited about something again, and the anticipation didn't let him sleep in - Granted, it was already a great improvement that he was sleeping again at all, so even though he had woken up at four in the morning already, he still felt more rested than he had for most of February.

He had spent most of his free morning hours simply going through various routines his dad had taught him growing up, tossing and turning in his bed in an attempt to mimic at least some of the movements without waking up the other people in his dorm, until he simply couldn't rest any longer. Steps as light as a feather, he had put on his school uniform, tried his best to make his tie look the way it was supposed to look - he didn't manage - and left the Common Room to make his way skipping down to the Great Hall for breakfast.

It was quite a bit earlier than he usually tended to go, so it came as no surprise to him that there were only few students gathered by their tables so far.

His first stop was by the Slytherin table, fire dancing excitedly in his green eyes as he searched the small sea of green for Jack, only dying down a little when he realised that he couldn't see him anywhere. A part of him had thought that maybe, for some reason, Jack had found himself in the Great Hall just as early as he had, and they could have used some time before class to go to their magical secret room so Ruka could have shown him a couple of routines he had deemed worthy of being performed at that Talent Show the Slytherin had signed them both up for, but it seemed that they would just have to find some other time for that.

Only slightly disappointed, Ruka made his way back to the Gryffindor table, eyes scanning it for the possibility of Jack already waiting there for him, but the only familiar face he could find was Alan, the kid Ruka had spent some time with - even joined that ridiculous Hide and Seek thing with - recently.
A bounce still in his step, Ruka walked over to where Alan was sitting by himself.

"Good morning," he said brightly, a smile on his face as he looked up and down the table again, just in case he had missed the Slytherin somewhere. "Have you seen Jack around?" He sat himself down opposite of where Alan was sitting, immediately reaching for some pumpkin juice and a couple of hash browns; Enthusiasm apparently made him hungry, who would have thought?

Expectant eyes landed on Alan once he had filled himself a nice big breakfast plate. He wasn't even exactly sure if Alan knew who he was talking about when asking for Jack. Had they actually met each other after that disastrous Valentine's Party?
However, he assumed that Alan must have seen him with Jack at meal times occasionally, so surely he had to be able to figure out who it was that he was looking for, right?

Either way, Ruka leaned back a little as he took a sip of his juice, gaze gliding to the entrance of the Great Hall as though ready to jump up and greet the Slytherin boy the second he set foot through the door. "I needed to show him something." Deciding that he was maybe being a little too rude and distracted, he finally settled his sights on Alan again, offering the older boy a smile and a nod.

"Uh, you're here early," he pointed out in an attempt to actually engage in conversation with the other boy rather than eagerly looking for a different person to talk to instead. "Couldn't sleep or are you just an early riser?"

Alan looked up from his plate and twisted his head, when he heard a familiar voice of a certain Gryffindor. It was no other than Ruka and Alan would give him a small smile. "M-Morning Ruka", he greeted back, but as soon as he mentioned Jack, Alan's smile fell slightly. How did it happen, that Ruka liked Jack so much? Was he okay with being called an experiment? Did he even know about that part? Alan had no idea, but Ruka was smart and Alan wanted to trust his judgement.

"N-No, I didn't... Wh-What did you have t-to show him?", he wondered, a bit curious. If Jack had meant all he said that day, why would he be around Ruka so much? Was it because he cared? Alan halted for a moment, forgetting that he had been talking to Ruka just now as he remembered one particular line that Jack guy had thrown at him.

"Among the things I hate the most - stupidity, kindness, caring, emotions - liars are on top."

The voice of the other kid rang in Alan's head and he halted for a moment. Did not... all of those apply to Jack explicitly? Alan would not use the word stupidity of course, but he recklessly jumped to Ruka's defense, when the second year had been attacked. Being there for Ruka and giving him hope, as he had described it was nothing but kind, right? It was nothing that he had to do, he did it because he wanted to. He was obviously caring for Ruka and there was no denying that and who did not have emotions? Alan frowned as he glanced at Ruka, lost in his thoughts as he slowly shook them away.

"Uh, you're here early", Ruka pointed out, which successfully got rid off Alan's thoughts and he focused on the second year, who had sat down across from him and was filling his plate with food and his mug with pumpkin juice. "J-Just woke up e-early today, y-you?", he wondered as he took a sip of his own mug that was also filled with pumpkin juice. "Y-You seem excited?" Alan wondered what had gotten the young Gryffindor into such a good mood, but he could not complain. Then again, it probably had to do with what he wanted to show to Jack. He wondered how Ruka even had met someone like Jack.

While asking Alan if he had seen Jack had been a shot in the dark in the first place, Ruka could still feel some disappointment coursing through him when the other boy told him that he hadn't.

It was alright though. They still had time, and they could still get a lot of stuff done after class. For now it was important for him to get some food inside him considering how much his stomach was rumbling with the need for nutrients. He didn't think he'd felt this hungry in forever! "Just this thing I've been working on," he answered Alan vaguely as he took a bite of a hash brown, not even bothering with cutlery. He simply licked the greasy remains off his fingers once the little patty was finished, smiling brightly at the thought of the routine he'd come up with.

His attention got pulled from all the moves he'd come up with again at the sound of Alan's voice telling him that he simply woke up early, and Ruka nodded his understanding lightly as he reached out to take a sip of his pumpkin juice. "Yeah, couldn't really sleep," he admitted with a small laugh, eyes landing on Alan's face for a second before roaming the hall again, just in case he had missed Jack's entrance within the past two minutes. "Huh?" he asked distractedly, turning his head to look back at the boy in front of him again with a small frown. It took him a moment to figure out what Alan had been saying, but when he did he nodded excitedly, eyes alight with enthusiasm like they hadn't been in a while.

"Oh, yeah," he said brightly, pulling his bottom lip between his teeth for a moment. "It's the Talent Show. You've heard about it, right?" He grinned, fidgeting in his seat with excess excitement. "We're performing! Jack and I, I mean." He chuckled, a sheepish expression crossing his features as he moved his left hand up to ruffle his own messy hair. "It's been a while since I performed in front of people." He couldn't remember if he'd ever mentioned Fire Dancing to Alan, but in the moment he was far too excited to consider the possibility that he hadn't, so he just kept on talking. "So I'm a bit nervous but..." A little laugh escaped him. "Excited too. And I've come up with a pretty good routine last night, too!"

"Oh", he muttered, glancing at the second year curiously. It did not really answer much at all, because Alan still was being left to wonder what thing Ruka had been working on, that he needed to show Jack so urgently. When Ruka told him that he could not really sleep, a light frown appeared on Alan's face as he glanced at the shorter boy, who was reaching for his mug with pumpkin juice. Alan himself was also eating the food he had filled onto his plate, but he wondered whether Ruka was alright and checked for any features that were worth worrying about. It was just a casual glance before he pushed a fork of scrambled eggs into his mouth, swallowing it after chewing on it for a bit. Alan could find nothing that looked like Ruka wasn't getting enough sleep, no dark circles and eyes shining with excitement. Had whatever he wanted to show Jack kept him up? Alan was smiling slightly, his features relaxing back into his friendly resting face.

"Th-there is going to be a T-Talent Show?", he wondered in surprise; he should really check the bulletin board more often for information like this! How could he not know? "Y-You're performing? R-Really?", he asked in shared excitement, taking a bite out off his bread roll. Once his mouth was empty again and he had made sure that no crumbs were sticking to his teeth, the Gryffindor continued, "Wh-What is y-your performance gonna b-be?", he asked the younger boy. He was eager to find out and maybe he could go and watch the Talent Show? He wondered if Ruka wanted him to be there, but moral support was never a bad thing, right? Alan looked at Ruka and wondered what kind of performance could fit to the other student, but considering he knew nearly nothing so far, it was quite a tricky question for the third year to answer.

"Y-You used t-to p-perform?", he asked, when the other Gryffindor mentioned, that it has been a while since he performed in front of a audience. "I am s-sure you will do a-amazing! I-Is that what y-you are going t-to show Jack? The r-routine?" It made sense that he would have to show the routine to Jack, since they were performing together and it looked like Ruka was really looking forward to the event. Alan would love to watch this performance as well and was glad that Ruka had let him know about it.

Ruka could feel Alan’s eyes in him as he was eating, but he didn’t think much of it. He figured it might have been because of the way he was shovelling food inside him like he hadn’t in a long while, or maybe because of his lack of cutlery, but what did it really matter?

Yeah,” he said excitedly to confirm that Alan had understood him right. He could head the enthusiasm coming from the other boy, and for the first time Ruka actually put his undivided attention on Alan to offer him a wide grin.

It was nice, somehow, to be sharing his excitement with someone who wasn’t really involved in what he was happy about. Someone who was merely excited because Ruka was too. “Fire Dance,” he answered brightly, putting a hand on his forehead for a second as if to scold himself for forgetting that he had never told Alan about that before. “Yeah I used to do some, growing up. Enough to come up with a good show.” He chuckled before letting his gaze drift to the Slytherin table one more time.

No sign of Jack.

Excitement in no way dimmed, Ruka faced Alan again, fire sparkling in his eyes. “You should come and watch! If you want to, of course. It should be good.” He chuckled lightly as he rubbed his slightly tired eyes.

While the adrenaline and excitement left him feeling wide awake, his body did punish him for the sleep deprivation with burning eyes and tired limbs.

Taking a bite of bacon, Ruka nodded his confirmation in Alan’s direction. “Yeah,” he said, shrugging his shoulders a bit as if it wasn’t quite that important that he wasn’t able to show Jack the routine just yet.

It wasn’t.

He was just excited.

It’s a good one but we’ll need quite a bit of practice to get it all right. I was hoping to catch him before class, but it’s alright, we still have some time.” He offered Alan a slight smile, reaching for his goblet to take a sip of pumpkin juice.

You should sign up too,” he suggested, raising his eyebrows in a question. “You gotta have some hidden talents to show off as well, right?”

Alan stared at him in surprise and nodded slightly. He had not expected the fire dance. "H-How does that w-work? I-Is there like a sp-spell for it?", he wondered, his curiosity lured him to ask more questions and make sense to the madness of his thoughts that just wouldn't stop; throwing one thought after the other into the room and seemingly leaving him blank minded at the same time. Whenever he tried to grasp one of the important thoughts, it was like his brain mixed some more into the pool and pre-occupied his mind with topics that he in theory had no need to bother about. For example how fire dancing even worked.

When Ruka invited him to come and watch the show, his eyes widened slightly as he had in no way expected the other kid to give him that sort of offer. He slightly tilted his head in confusion, before his face broke into a grin that showed a row of white teeth. "I w-would love t-too!", he exclaimed and supported this statement with a hectic nod as if any further confirmation was needed. He was excited to see for his own eyes what the younger Gryffindor had planned and would be looking forward to whatever the show would be.

"Oh n-no, not r-really", he quickly disagreed, shaking his head vehemently. Maybe he had been too fast with this abrupt reply, but there was no way Alan would be singing in front of anyone or showing other of his talents. Changing the way he looked also was not quite a talent, it was like awarding a fire dwelling salamander for being able to not get burned by the fire it literally lived in. It was not the best comparison, obviously but what he meant was that he did not believe what he could do was in any way some sort of talent that was worth being shown in front of an audience. Cold shudders shook him, alone by the thought of so many eyes laying on him and expecting him to change into this or that. No, he could definitely do without that. "B-But I w-wish you all th-the luck!", he added quickly. He meant it of course, but it could also easily be a distraction about the fact that he was badly trying to hide something.

Ruka blinked in slight surprise at Alan's question about Fire Dance, immediately assuming that it was magic somehow. He was instantly reminded of Jack, the first time they had met, questioning if his Fire Performance was magical, but there was an innate difference between that time and Alan asking about it now.

Where Jack, muggleborn and thrown into this world where everything was somehow related to magic - not much unlike Ruka himself - and everyone seemed to know more about magical stuff than they did themselves, had taken something he probably had never seen this up close before and associated the unfamiliarity with the just as barely familiar concept of magic, the way Alan asked the question made Ruka feel like the other boy didn't even really consider the fact that this could possibly be something done purely through Muggle methods.

"No, no spell," he answered with a little chuckle as if infinitely amused by the suggestion that he was using magic for this particular talent of his. "Just a lot of practice." He shrugged lightly as he let his gaze wander through the Great Hall once more. Just in case.

Not finding who he was looking for once again, Ruka turned his attention back on Alan, a small smile playing on his lips at the excitement of the other boy at being invited to come watch the show. It was silly, almost, considering the fact that there were flyers about it that invited absolutely anybody who was interested to attend or even participate. Alan didn't need Ruka's invitation to just show up, and yet it seemed like it meant a lot to the other boy.

Curious.

What was even more curious, however, was the way his fellow Gryffindor vehemently denied having a talent of his own to display, combined with a far too sudden change of topic in wishing Ruka the best of luck for his own show. There was clearly more to it than Alan simply not considering anything he was able to do a talent per se, something like embarrassment maybe? Something he didn't want to talk about?

"Everyone has a talent," Ruka protested with a little shrug. "What's so bad about yours that you wouldn't want to show them off a bit?"

When Ruka told him that there would be no spell involved in his performance, the third year would stare at him in slight confusion. He was not entirely sure how that should be made possible then, because fire after all was dangerous and unpredictable and could easily go wrong. He of all people knew, as he remembered the incident in the charms classroom. It had been a while ago now, but ever since the day the third year had strictly refused to ever cast the fire conjuration spell again, out of fear that he might mess it up again. "Th-That's incredible...", he muttered in slight awe. "H-How does i-it w-work?"

"W-Well, m-mine isn't really a t-talent, o-or anything sp-special," he explained and by that he meant his quite mundane talents or rather hobbies. He would not even dare to begin with his metamorph abilities since they were seriously no talent and he had no desire for everyone to know. They often did not have the best reputation either and people might fear that they used their abilities for their own advantage and Alan did not want people to think that way. It was seriously better if these things would stay a secret and not be mentioned. At least towards the general public, since he was sure actual friends would not think different about him because of something he could not change or influence. He was just used to not telling others, it had been drilled into him not to tell people about it and keep it a secret if he could.

He could not help but notice the way that Ruka would look around the great hall and now that he knew why, he could understand the action a bit better. "A-Are you e-excited?", he would ask the second year curiously, then took a bite from the food on his plate.

While Ruka almost felt a bit flattered by his house mate's words, he couldn't help but shake his head lightly with an incredulous expression on his face. He thought it was quite obvious what Fire Dance entailed and how it would work, even if not simple to execute, but Alan looked like he was genuinely struggling with the concept of it, so Ruka straightened his back slightly as if to prepare for what he was about to say.

"You just..." he started before stopping himself to help himself to a piece of bacon, humming thoughtfully as he considered how to best explain without sounding too condescending. "I have..." He stopped again, tapping a greasy finger to his chin. "I just have torches and I set them on fire and... And then I do a Dance Routine with them..." He finished weakly, a small, sheepish laugh bubbling from his lungs. It seemed like such an obvious explanation and he wondered if maybe he had simply misunderstood what Alan was asking exactly and had just made a complete fool out of himself.

Averting his gaze for a moment, Ruka simply listened to Alan talk about how his talent wasn't exactly that, or special at all, and the words made him perk up a bit in vague interest. "So you do have a talent," he said with a little smirk, pointing a slightly accusatory finger at Alan. "I'm pretty sure there's plenty of people who don't think their talents are anything special. Others might still be interested to see them; You can't make that decision for them." He shrugged lightly, eyes leaving Alan's again to roam the Great Hall.

Still no sight of Jack.

He needed to keep looking and just surrender to the fact that they would have to practice after classes instead. It wasn't like it was all that important, he was just...

Alan's words finished that thought for him, and Ruka turned back at the other boy with a wide grin. "Yeah," he said brightly, almost bouncing with the energy that filled him at the mere thought of it. Joy was dancing in his irises like little flames as he nodded quickly in between two sips of his pumpkin juice before he continued talking. "I've done this by myself far too long," he admitted as he sheepishly rubbed the nape of his neck, cheeks flushing lightly. "It's nice to be doing it with someone. Makes it all feel even better, kind of."
