Anastasia gave him a skeptical look. As if she needed to be caught every time she fell. She was a perfectly capable witch, scratch that, she was more than capable, she was a brilliant student and a fairly quick thinker, which, in her opinion, made her a very good witch. she was sure she would have thought of something, like Spongifying the ground before she impacted it. She rather wanted to chuckle at his adorable attempt at flirting. It clearly wasn't something he did as often as the boys Ana had encountered abroad, or even as often as Ana herself. Nevertheless, it wasn't totally terrible, and he showed some promise.

"Are you saying that I need to be caught?" she asked, her tone playful, but her eyes sparkling dangerously. She was absolutely not above hexing him to prove a point, although she knew she probably shouldn't. Then again, if there was something that Ana shouldn't do, she would almost certainly end up doing it in fairly short order, as had been proven time and time again. Anastasia Beckett was at that lovely point in her life when she believed that she could do literally anything and had yet to be shown otherwise.

While Ana's tone was playful like she just flirting him again, her eyes suggested that she might just cast incendio on him... he suddenly remembered the time he had been attacked with that spell, he wasn't badly hurt or anything, but ever since then, he had an aversion to the spell, preferring not to use it... it's not like he was very good at casting it anyway, it took him two or three times before he could successfully cast it. Instead, he decided to get really good at casting just one spell, so the next time he was getting attacked by some weirdo he would at least be a little prepared...

"' course not, im sure you can handle yourself..." He laughed nervously, he wasn't exactly sure what she was capable of, and he sure as hell did not want to find out. But hopefully, she valued their friendship enough not to hex him over a bad joke... but you never know when it comes to the students of Hogwarts... he had been set on fire for much less, the costume party came to mind... that girl still owed him a lab suit. "So... tell me more about your travels... what was your favorite place?" Dale said trying to change the topic.

Ana laughed at his nervous tone. It was always amusing to her when, between her looks and her considerable willingness to endanger herself and others, people got scared of her. Sure, she was a pretty little twelve-year-old and not at all physically intimidating, but she more than made up for that with her arsenal of jinxes and hexes. Still, Dale seemed properly traumatized, so she decided against making him barf slugs for the moment. It was a pity though since she'd just learned that spell and was aching for a chance to test it out. She supposed she'd just have to wait for Aurelia like she'd originally planned.

"I just adore Paris and really, France as a country. I've been there before though, at it really feels more like a second home than a new place. Russia and China were lovely though. I actually learned a pretty decent amount of Chinese," she told him. She honestly anticipated living in Paris when she was older. It was just so perfect for her and quite frankly, she thought French was a far better language than English. Her parents had made her learn it when she was young since they said knowing a romance language would help with spells later on (which it certainly had), but her love of France and all things French was something that was purely her own.

Dale didn't mind Ana's amusement with his nervousness... it was clear that Ana didn't think much of him, most people didn't think much of him, but Dale was pretty confident in himself, his magic game wasn't the best, but everything could be learned with just a little time... and if ever needed to he could defend himself with incedio, he had almost perfected the spell. Mostly on accident... at least he could say that his thermite experiments weren't a total waste of time, only kind of a waste of time.

"Never been to France before... way too expensive..." Dale felt a little awkward... there was obviously a huge wealth gap between the two of them, Ana was able to explore the world with seemed like little care for money, while his own parents could barley get enough money for their needs. But he was happy with the way he lived, his parents seemed content too. As long as he had a small lab and a computer, Dale didn't care where he was. Dale looked over to Ana, he had no idea what to talk about, he didn't know her all that well, except for the fact that she traveled and came from a wealthy family...

Anastasia blushed a bit at Dale's clear uncomfortableness about their differences in wealth. This wasn't normally an issue for her since her family generally only associated with people of similar status. She quite honestly couldn't imagine what it was like to not be wealthy. They had four homes that she knew of and had alternated which they spent the summer in each year. She enjoyed traveling alright, but she was really rather used to it at this point.

She tried to think of another topic, really any, since she didn't actually relish making Dale uncomfortable because of this. She had zero issues with making him uncomfortable with her flirting, but it seemed silly and a jerkish move to lord something that neither of them could actually control over his head. "So, have I missed any good hexes this year?" she asked. Her favorite subject was Transfiguration, but she really didn't mind any class where they learned fun hexes. She'd just learned the Slug Vomiting spell, and could hardly wait for a chance to use it. She wasn't sure why she liked hexes and jinxes and such, she just did. Some might call her a bully for her tendency to use them on irritating first years, but she didn't think of herself as a bully exactly. Maybe someone with little patience for nonsense from idiots, but not a bully.

Dale thought for a second... why did she specifically ask about hexes... Dale pushed that thought out of his head... it could only lead to bad conclusions. He tried to remember what exactly a hex was... he barely paid any attention in his classes anymore, they all bored him too much, there was no challenge... But he vaguely remembered the professor talking about the Sneezing Hex... but that sounded pretty lame... "Not that I can recall... but I read about a few... like one that makes you throw up slugs... and one that throws you off your broom." Dale had always been kinda afraid of hexes... they seemed like they could do some much damage... and the slug barfing one just sounded... disgusting.

Dale didn't like using magic, not that he ever had to. But if he ever got into a fight he imagined himself just using his fists... or just trying to scare them away, he was taller then almost everyone his age, and even a few 3rd years, Kae came to mind. He also was pretty sure most wizards were pretty weak... maybe not the quidditch players... but almost everyone else seemed pretty weak, but they could probably end him in just a few spells...

Ana pressed her lips together. She supposed that was for the best, since, if she intended to join dueling, it was less than ideal for her classmates and potential opponents to know spells that she didn't, but she would have rather liked to talk about spells she found interesting. She also liked knowing spells like that. Not that she got into fights often, but she was pretty confident she could stand her own against just about anyone short of a professor. Maybe even if she got the drop on a professor, she could handle them. Maybe she was being rather arrogant, thinking like that. She didn't think it was arrogance if she was right.

"Pity. Have I missed anything interesting?"Ana asked him. In her efforts to steer away from something that was clearly making him uncomfortable, she'd managed to stumble on something else that made him only marginally less uncomfortable. She mildly wondered if he was worried about her using the hexes on him. She was rather offended at the idea, despite the fact she had been seriously considering it not a minute ago. So, she asked an open-ended question that gave him the opportunity to bring up something that he was more comfortable with. She didn't normally have to do this much mental gymnastics since typically she knew the person she was talking to better than she knew Dale, or it was some pureblood that was perfectly happy to talk about money or their fancy vacations or other things that were topics to avoid with Dale.

Dale thought for a second, trying to think of a way to summarize all of last year's insanity. "Uhh..." Dale put his head back and turned towards Ana, "You missed a lot, all of it bad." Dale redirected his eyes to the sky, admiring the clouds. "There was a ball, it was relatively ok, until like 3 or 4 giants came in tried to kidnap someone, and a bomb went off at some point in the middle of it..." Dale tried to think back to everything that happened that crazy thing, but the only things he could remember were him dancing like an idiot and Lark getting hit in the head.

"Uhh there was a dark witch society at one point... I almost got mauled by a fox while someone else was trying to steal something from its nest." Dale exaggerated a bit about the fox, but anything that sounded better then "I tricked a fox with a dead rabbit" at least to him it did. Dale tried to think of anything else crazy happening... "No that's about it really" Dale looked over to Ana to try to gauge her reaction, "It was a pretty calm year overall." Dale said with a monotone voice.

Ana arched an eyebrow and nodded as Dale spoke. She'd heard about most everything that had happened. As an aside, she wondered what kind of parents would send their children to a school like this. She knew that she didn't exactly communicate well with her parents, and that communications form the school itself had been odd, so they likely had no idea about any of what Dale had just talked about. Still, she assumed that there was at least a handful of students that spoke to their parents about things like this, and she seriously questioned what kind of parent knew about this and didn't try to do anything. Then again, she wasn't sure exactly what a parent even could do in a situation like this beyond protecting their own child by taking them out of school.

"Ah, so Hogwarts is still Hogwarts then?" Ana laughed. Hogwarts always seemed to have one dangerous thing to the next. She was about to continue her reply when it occurred to her that she had a Charms essay that was due the next day that she really ought to finish. "As lovely as this has been, I'd best be going. I'll see you around, love."

After giving Dale another flirtatious wink, she tossed her hair and began towards the castle. She wondered if she would be able to get her hands on some coffee. Usually, the house-elves would oblige her late demands for caffeine, but lately, more and more of them seemed to be concerned about the girl's lack of sleep. No matter, she was sure she could get it somehow.
