Sorting Ceremony 2025 - 2026

All the first years gathered in the Great Hall for the Sorting ceremony. Rosy was rubbing her knuckles just like she did whenever she was nervous. She had to keep drinking large gulps of water to prevent her throat from drying. She felt like screaming or running away from the hall. When she had got her Hogwarts letter, she had been excited beyond limit but now, the pressure was eating her alive.

What if she was in Gryffindor? People would laugh at her for being afraid of small things, especially as she was supposed to be brave. What if she was in Ravenclaw? She would be expected to get all her O.W.L.'s. What if she was in Hufflepuff? People made fun of the house; she would surely be bullied. What if she was in Slytherin? It was the house of Dark wizards; everybody would bully her for being muggle-born and she would not be able to befriend anyone.

Suddenly, she heard her name being called. "Parker, Rosy." Shivering, she went up to the stool and sat on it. Her heart was beating faster than ever. As the hat was put on her head, she realized everybody was staring at her. The hat thought and thought while Rosy moved uncomfortably in her position.

She then heard the hat whispering in her ear, "Ah, very confusing. The ambition of a Slytherin, the wit of a Ravenclaw, the loyalty of a Hufflepuff and no traits of Gryffindor. At this point, a desire to go in a particular house would matter but no desire to be put in either of the houses."
Even with her eyes closed, Rosy could feel all the eyes glaring at her while she just sat silently, hoping she hadn't come to attend Hogwarts. Suddenly the hat shouted, "SLYTHERIN."

Rosy got up feeling nervous and frightened. It was done now she was a Slytherin. The hat had put her in the house of Dark wizards. As she went and unwillingly sat at the Slytherin table, she half expected to hear murmurs stating, "A Mudblood in Slytherin." But to her surprise, everybody turned to her and began welcoming her. Rosy was shocked at how nice all her fellow Slytherins were.

"Maybe Slytherin house isn't so bad," She thought while taking a sip of pumpkin juice from her Goblet.

Evening of 1st September 2025
Arin was really nervous, which was unusual for him. He knew that the Beauxbatons sort their students through shooting arrows, but Hogwarts? He expected something much grander from such a popular school. But a hat? He always heard about it, but didn't think it was real.

The hall was big with four long dining tables with all types of food. The food looked particularly attractive right now. Mainly because he barfed up everything as soon as he got off the train. The ceiling was high and looked enchanted.

After a speech from the Headmaster, the Sorting Hat started singing a song. The song was long and boring, but Arin was too busy overthinking about his house to complain about it internally.

After the song ended, the students were called upon to get sorted by the hat. When it was Arin's turn, he walked towards the hat, sitting down on the stool. The hat covered half of his head. It took a whole minute for the hat to decide on a perfect house for him. "Wants to prove yourself? Quite ambitious. Slytherin"

Arin was shocked and glad at the same time. He has heard a lot about the green house, and something about all the rumours makes him think, the house isn't what everything think it is.

When Silva entered the Great Hall, they already felt like they wanted to run back through the door they came in. Everything was so overwhelmingly big, and probably there were more people in here than living in the whole village were Silva grow up. Of course they had read about Hogwarts before coming here, and although their mother never went to this school herself, she had often told Silva about the magic world. But nothing of that could have prepared Silva for this. They didn't know where to look first, the flouting candles the, magic roof, the students around them and at these long tables... there were just so much new things! Over all that Silva only started thinking about the sorting when the first names were called out.
They had already thought about what house they would get in, but only now it started to actually feel real.
Luckily the name Silva Alder was called before they could get so nervous that they would follow the thought of just running out of that crowded hall.
When they sat on the small chair, their hands balled into cramped fists to prevent them from shaking, the sorting hat was put on their head.
Hm... I see some ambitiousness here, maybe Slytherin would fit Silva heard a voice in their had But with that carving for wisdom, this one is clearly a
"Ravenclaw"
What feelt like half of an eternity to Silva, had only taken half of a minute.
Still nervous, but also quite happy and a bit proud Silva walked over to the table of their new house. They would probably take some time later, to think about everything, but for now they were just glad to be here, welcomed by their house members. I think this is going to be great they thought while watching the other new students.

I wonder what house I'll be in.

Prometheus was standing idly in his thoughts, hands unconsciously playing with the hems of his sleeves, before another boy tripped a bit too close to him due to the jumble that were the first years trying to be quiet while waiting for their names to be called, leading to Prometheus tucking his arms together with slight annoyance.

Hopefully not his, at least, he caught himself thinking, then frowned. That was a bit rude, even for his own normally unfiltered thoughts.

"Prometheus, December."

They snapped back to reality, looking up at the stool that a blonde girl was quickly walking away from, heading towards the Gryffindor table.

Well, I won't be in her house, now will I? His train of thought goes much faster than his feet, as they slowly step up the few stairs, guiding his way closer and closer to the stool, and the professor holding what is probably the ugliest fucking hat they've ever seen in their life. Statistically, Hufflepuff is the least likely, then Gryffindor...

"This is magic, it's not statistics." He reminds himself under his breath, before he finally sits down on the stool and the wilted looking hat is placed on his head and--

--ew, is it in my head?!

"Strange, are you not nervous or even the slightest bit excited for me to determine the biggest turning point of your life?"

Do they ever clean you?

"Hmf! What a rude young witch. Do you want me to tell them you're unfit for any house?

Witch? Huh, I guess you really are magical. Okay, okay, I'm sorry. Um, aren't you supposed to tell me what house I'm in now?

"Life disappoints us all, doesn't it?"

"I'm about to disappoint you if y--"

"Slytherin!"

"--oh."

What a weird hat, Prometheus thinks, as they stand up and are pointed to the green-adorned table.[/quote]

Her table.

That wasn't... shocking, obviously. She knew the highest chances belonged within Ravenclaw or, as it was just proven, Slytherin. Slightly comforted by their correct assumption, they straightened up a bit and stepped over towards their new table, where a few presumably fifth or sixth years were already starting to stand and beckon him over to sit, pointing to empty spots.

So, Prometheus obliged and sat at his newly-claimed house table of Slytherin.

Never in her eleven years of living had she seen a room this magnificent. The lights, the ceilings, the walls. Everything is pure art. Four long dining tables stretched the length of the room with benches on either side.

She eyed the food that was laid out beautifully on the table. Gobleys full of cheery, fruity drinks and large, full plates of hearty dishes. The older kids had already sat down with their friends on their respectative houses. Of course, this ceremony is only meant for the first years.

The first years huddled closely in front as they waited for the Headmaster to arrived. It was loud, the roar of conversation as well as the excitement and anticipation of many of the students as they waited and they wondered where they were going to be sorted. Aurora took a moment to predict what house she will be sorted into. Her mother was a Hufflepuff, and an apple doesn't fell far from the tree, right?

Solomon Lear, the Headmaster arrived. He was a curious, unexpected figure for most. After a few words from the Headmaster and the Sorting Hat itself, the ceremony begins.

One by one, children's name were called "Coleman, Aurora!" At her name, she walks up to the podium and carefully fixes her robe before she sits. The hat was gingerly placed ontop of her head, with it slightly covering her vision.

'This is one musty hat' Aurora grimace slightly. The sorting hat scoff "You do know i can read minds, do you not?" Aurora flinches in surprise, she looked down embarrassed. "I'm sorry." She mumbles under her breath

"Hm.. what a peculiar child. Youre soft on the outside but you've got a lion sleeping deep inside you." Aurora only listen absentmindedly and before she knows it, "GRYFFINDOR!"

Cheers of the students from the Gryffindor table, knowing they have got a new family member. The hat was taken off from the girl and she slid down from the chair before awkwardly walks to the Gryffindor's table.

Gryffindor. Well i certainly didn't see it coming. I'll have to owl Dad later.

Jay had never been in a place quite this large. They were overwhelmed by all the candles and people, but calmed themselves. The headmaster was very nice and a little bit strange. Jay tried to find a familiar face, but didn’t see any of their friends. When the headmaster started his speech, Jay started to get the jitters of excitement and tried to keep it inside, but accidentally squeaked when the Sorting Hat was brought out. They could hardly keep themselves together while all the others were being sorted. Jay was just thinking-“ WOW… so many classmates and potential friends. I hope I get along with them.” They were trying to guess which house they would get into, and they were more or less expecting to get put into Ravenclaw, because of their parents. While they were thinking about that, they heard - “Moore, Jay!”
They jumped up, and walked quickly to the Sorting Hat. When the hat got put on their head, they heard a voice in their head say -“Ah. Moore. You are very different from your parents. You don’t belong in Ravenclaw like them. You are more interested in magical creatures rather than spells and potions. You would rather spend more time with friends than study alone. Yes, you are HUFFLEPUFF!”
Jay was a little bit surprised. The Sorting hat was fully correct about everything, but how would they tell their parents? They were expecting any of the houses, except for Hufflepuff. But now that they thought about it, they fit in the most with the Hufflepuffs. They walked to the cheering table with a smile on their face.

Ada was practically shaking, with both excitement an nerves. She looked around at the enormous Great Hall, with its four long house tables packed with chattering students. Its enchanted ceiling (a dull grey-black-blue, scattered with clouds and spangled with stars). Ada was shorter than many of the first year students in line, but by the looks on their faces, they were every bit at nervous as she was.

The head master stood up, and introduced himself as Solomon Lear. He was a tall scruffy man, his face adorned with scars and an impressive grey beard.

"Sorting Hat will be placed upon your head. It won't hurt one bit. The Sorting Hat will look into your heart and mind and determine the best place for you: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. As most of you must know, each of those houses possesses their own characteristic, their own values and their own Head of House." He gestured to what Ada amused were the heads of houses and deputy headmistress. "The house that will be chosen for you shall represent qualities that are truly present within each of you. Your future house shall be like a second family. You will also be able to gather points and once we reach the end of the year, the house with the most house points shall win the House Championship Cup. What you need to know is the Sorting Hat is never wrong, once you are sorted your House will not change for the duration of your time in Hogwarts."

The headmaster puled a scroll from his belt, opened it, then waited expectantly, looking at the sorting hat. For a moment, nothing happened. Then the hat burst into song:

" A thousand years or more ago
When I was newly sewn,
There lived four wizards of
Whose names are still well known:

Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor,
Fair Ravenclaw, from glen,
Sweet Hufflepuff, from valley broad,
Shrewd Slytherin, from fen.

For were their such friends anywhere
As Slytherin and Gryffindor.
Unless it was the second pair
Of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.

United by a common goal,
They had the selfsame yearning
To make the world's best magic school
And pass along their learning.

Now each of these four founders
Formed their own house, for each
Did value different virtues
In the ones, they had to teach.

While still alive they did divide
Their favorites from the throng,
Yet how to pick the worthy ones
When were they dead and gone?

Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
He whipped me off his head
The founders put some brains in me
So I could choose instead!

Now slip me snug about your ears,
I've never yet been wrong,
I'll have a look inside your mind
And tell where you belong!

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've got a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends. "

Ada applauded along with the rest of the room. Her father had said that is sung a new one every year. This made sense to Ada, it must be so boring as a hat. She thought.

Professor Lear had started to read off the names from his scroll of parchment in alphabetical order. It seemed all to soon that she herd "Hawkins, Ada" her own name. She moved up towards the three legged stool that the sorting hat was perched atop of. The tattered hat was placed upon her head and instantly she heard a voice in her ears.

"Ahh..." it sighed. "Tricky tricky... Slytherin perhaps? I sense cunning great cunning and ambition... Oh, but I see also the side you hide away, with great nerve and daring..." Ada sat in silence as the sorting hat debated with it's self. "Ah yes... that settles it...with your courage and underlying loyalty... better be... GRYFFINDOR! " It shouted the last word out loud. Ada Smiled slightly as she took off the old hat and joined the screaming and clapping Gryffindors at the far left table.

‘…perhaps I should have snuck my puzzle box with me after all.’

Emil Scovich waited with the remainder of the unsorted first-years, politely smiling and clapping for each new student that was sorted into a House. It was the polite thing to do, after all, and politeness was required for proper socializing later…and their parents had implored Emil to be more social.
However, there was a problem — Emil was getting bored and their mind was starting to wander. They looked back to the Headmaster, observing him for a moment. He sounded normal, but the armor…was that standard for staff here at Hogwarts? Oh dear — was armor on the required supply list? Emil and their family hadn’t bought any! Perhaps they could find a way to fashion some, maybe with some assistance from—
“Scovich, Emil!”
Oh! It was finally Emil’s turn!
The shorter than average youth quietly approached the stool and sat down, letting the Sorting Hat be placed on their head — and for the Hat’s voice to fill their mind.

‘Ah, now what have we here? Trickier than first meets the eye, this one…’

‘…hello. I’m Emil.’

’Indeed — with an inquisitive mind that values knowledge and seeks understanding. Ravenclaw would be a good fit for you — and yet…no, perhaps not. I see a deeper reasoning for your pursuits. No glory-seeking, no power-building, something much more practical.’

‘Oh, I quite like practical magic, especially wards and defensive spells. They’re quite like magical puzzles themselves, you know? My mum and dad always says I should give theoretical things more of a chance, but I prefer helping with—‘
Emil’s response in their own mind was cut off. The Sorting Hat was passing its judgement.

“Better be…HUFFLEPUFF!”

Emil blinked once, then twice. Hufflepuff? They certainly weren’t against the idea, and yet…not Ravenclaw? How curious.
For now, though, they simply smiled politely and excused themself from the stool after the Hat was removed to join their new House at their table.

Emil Scovich, puzzle lover and riddle seeker…and new member of House Hufflepuff. Not quite what Emil expected — but they were determined to see what was in store for them without complaint.

The long journey on the Hogwarts Express was over, and now Edwina and other eleven-year-olds was standing before the doors of the Great Hall. Some of them were restless, some were scared, but she was excited about what was to come.

The beauty of the old castle, its grandeur, was breathtaking. Edwina's heart was pounding in anticipation. Soon she would walk through these corridors and endless stairs, from class to class. She would look out these windows during boring lessons at mountains and forests. She would run around the school grounds with her classmates, and most importantly - she would do magic! And then the doors opened.

As Edwina stepped inside with the wave of other children, she could not help but smile. The Great Hall was indeed huge. Four tables, four Houses welcoming them all, with teachers at the table at the end. Candles floated around, magically enchanted, and the ceiling... There was no ceiling! Instead, the evening stars shone high above, and clouds occasionally floated by. Edwina gaped at it and almost fell over, tripping over her own feet - it was especially easy to do in a crowd. Someone nearby explained that the ceiling had been enchanted to show the sky. To Edwina, it did not make it any less incredible.

The Headmaster was not who she expected to see either. A wizard with a gray beard, no doubt, but a wizard with a gray beard and armor? That was unexpected and... So cool! She wondered if he had a sword too. Wizards probably did not need them, but still... If there was such a possibility, she would really like to be a witch knight!

After a long speech, it was time for the sorting itself, which everyone had been waiting for. Edwina bounced on her heels slightly, unable to wait for her turn. What house would she be sorted into? Gryffindor? Slytherin? Hufflepuff? Ravenclaw? No, definitely not into Ravenclaw, she did not like studying. And being in a whole house where they only studied? Boring. Of course, magic was interesting, and Edwina wanted to study to be a skilled witch, but she did not feel like she would find a common language with her peers there. Slytherin was called a den of snakes by several students on the train, and it generally had a bad reputation, but she liked the color green so much!.. Maybe they were not so bad after all? And the hat sang that in Slytherin “you’ll make your real friends.” Although one look at the Slytherin table gave her the feeling that maybe she did not belong there either. Maybe Gryffindor-...

The children were called one by one and the Sorting Hat loudly announced the different houses after a few seconds of silence. Some of them ran happily to their tables, others were just shuffling their feet in shock.

Whitehead, Edwina” her name was called out, interrupting chaotic train of thoughts.

She heard boys next to her talking about which house they wanted to go to, and she still did not understand which one to choose. And could they choose at all? It did not matter which one, as long as she could make friends and have fun!

Edwina sat on a stool and an old patched hat was placed on her head. Immediately a voice rang out in her head. “Hmm… Lots I see here...” She blinked in surprise. It was a strange feeling. Hearing someone else in her head besides herself. How did it work anyway? And could the hat hear her as well? “Yes, a sharp mind. You think about a lot of things and your curiosity often guides you through life, but…” it waited for a moment. “I see... You lack the perseverance...

Her mother had told her the same thing. What could she do if sitting in one place for several hours was not her thing? Everyone constantly cries about lost potential, but Edwina is more concerned about lost time, which she could have spent on something much more interesting!

There are also courage and bravery, and willingness to stand your ground… Maybe Gryffindor?...” the Hat mumbled more to itself than to her.

Edwina glanced at the table where the students in red were sitting. The newly sorted first years were chatting happily with the seniors and each other. Would she laugh among them soon? Among the brave and proud Gryffindors? She did not mind.

But no, that’s not what you need. You have the strength and ability to overcome difficulties, loyalty, desire for justice… Where you belong is…” The Hat fell silent theatrically as Edwina closed her eyes and clenched her hands into fists, awaiting the verdict.

HAFFLEPUFF!” the Hat shouted, and loud applause rang out from the Hufflepuff table.

Edwina grinned broadly and jumped off the stool as soon as the hat was removed from her head. She strode to the table and sat on the edge of the bench, greeting everyone around her, happy to finally belong somewhere. She looked at the people in yellow around, who shared her smile, and thought that she liked the color yellow too.

Everyone in this family is Slytherin. The Singer family is a pureblood name that has Slytherins going back for generations. So obviously the next Singer girl, Mary Anne would be Slytherin.

But Rusty was still a tiny bit worried. Mary Anne wasn't like the rest of the family. She always seemed a bit different and wasn't as loud and proud about being a pureblood as the rest of the family. So when Mary Anne took her place on the wooden stool and had the sorting hat placed on her head, Rusty started to sweat.

It's going to be fine. Everyone in our family is a Slytherin, why would Mary Anne be any different?

Rusty took a deep breath and stared at his little sister sitting in front of the Great Hall. What was taking so long? Why was the sorting hat not immideatly shouting out SLYTHERIN to the place? Could it actually be considering....

No. Mary Anne is Slytherin. She will be okay.

Rusty bit his lip and stared intently at his little sister on the stool. Any moment now....

HUFFLEPUFF!

The color drained from Rusty's face. HUFFLEPUFF? Hufflepuff was the single worst house in all of Hogwarts. Everyone in Rusty's family knew this! How could little Mary Anne possibly be a disgusting Hufflepuff?! Rusty look up at his sister who was avoiding his eye contact for some reason.

Rusty took a deep breath. This was going to be a very interesting year.
