Excited to be here!

Madeline had been looking forward to this class more than all of her other classes for as long as she could remember. As a child, she had read all of here mum and da's old Charm's textbooks and all of the other books on charms that she could find at the house, and from the Owl delivery library. Today was her first actual day of class.

She arrived to class a little early - maybe too early. Finding a seat in the front, she took out her quill, ink, book and wand. She was ready for whatever would come today, and she was determined to take as many notes as possible, and to get the charms today correct on her very first try. She had read through the book at least three times since purchasing it in Diagon Alley, and was eager to put everything she had read to use. Of course, she had worked on some of the charms at home - or at least tried to until her mum saw her and stopped her. "Ye have to wait till ye get to class for that, Madeline," she said with smile and a wink.

Today they were supposed to be learning about the Dancing Feet Spell and the Mending Charm. The Dancing Feet Spell was the one she was most interested in - it was one that she was hoping to be able to use in the Dueling club once she got in. The Mending Charm would be useful, alright, but it was the dueling charms that she was most excited to learn.

After waiting for a few minutes her patience finally was rewarded. Other students filed into the classroom, and most of the other chairs were filled with the other first year students. Then the professor walked into the classroom and right up to the front, turning around. Madeline picked up her quill, and readied it by the ink well, just waiting to begin taking notes so she could remember everything that was said. As soon as the Professor began speaking Madeline dipped her quill in the ink and began scribbling everything that he said - she was convinced she would take everything down precisely so she could review her notes, and be the best at Charms!

Paul came five minutes later. He didn't seem to be proud about it, nor did he look particularly guilty. The task was simple; to merely slip into the classroom, without a mayhem and without much attention from other students.

He hid behind the last row of seats closest to the door, till the attention of those in his surroundings moved somewhere else. It wasn't till then that he started running down the aisle, meanwhile looking for free spots. At some point, he stopped and just slipped onto an empty seat next to a ginger girl and pretended that nothing was out of ordinary. Except for, perhaps, the fact that his cheeks were all red and he was breathing hard, probably due to the short run through the aisle between the desks.

Rocking back on his chair, leaning against the desk behind them. He waved at Madeline, smirking at her and putting his index finger against his lips, suggesting she didn't say a word about his late arrival.
'Cause that was Paul. He was far from punctual or responsible about his arrivals in classes. He was never in time, nor on time, but one could always count on him being late. If one was to set their clock based on Paul, they would have to face consequences.

The spell of the Dancing Feet... That, finally, dragged Paul's attention. He didn't have a quill, nor was he ready in any other way for the lesson. Unlike Madeline, who seemed to be writing down all that the professor was saying.

Paul was acting different, if not doing the very opposite. Useful things like this charm, his mind was usually ready to accept and he even mostly managed to remember them by heart at once. For a moment, it seemed he was really focused on what the professor was suggesting about the Charm; the wand movement and the incantation.

He stopped rocking on his chair, in order to take his wand out of his backpack and the case t0o. He then leaned closer to the desk, practically pressing his belly against it, and started trying out the wand movement under the desk. It couldn't have been that hard, if they studied it in their first year, right?

"I wonder if we'll get to practise?" Paul asked into the thin air, waiting for any replies from those who heard.

Madeline was studiously taking notes, and paying close attention to everything that Professor Townsend was saying. With quill firmly in one hand, and the other steadying her parchment so she could write quickly, she took notes in shorthand so she could remember every word the Professor spoke.

While she was intently listening to the Professor speak about the Dancing feet charm, she heard what sounded like wood scraping on stone, and noticed her out of breath classmate had just sat down in the seat behind her. She had half a mind to give him a scolding for being late to class, but then thought better of it. Perhaps this was an accident and he was usually more punctual than that. As she looked back at him, she could also tell that he did not seem to be very prepared for the class, no quills, ink or parchment.
How ever would he take notes without those essential items.

She took one of her spare quills and pieces of parchment as was going to give them to him when she saw him bending over his desk, hand underneath and whisper,
"I wonder if we'll get to practise?"
To that, she responded quietly,
"Of course we will get to practice! What good will it do to teach us how to use our wands if she never actually lets us use them?"
I put the quill, ink, and parchment on his desk and say,
"You really should take some notes so you remember what to do when it is time to practice."
I turn back to my desk and continue taking notes, trying to remember everything the professor said while I was giving the stuff to my classmate.

Paul was listening to the professor, getting more and more bored with every word she said. These theoretical beginnings were indeed very interesting, just not for him. At some point, he started imagining, what the professor would look like under the effects of the Dancing Feet Charm, and it brought a wide grin onto his face.

Fortunately, there came distraction in the form of the ginger sitting in front of him. When she replied to his question, he blinked twice, taken aback. He slipped his wand back into the case then under the desk, putting his hands up in a give-up gesture. Her belief that they'd practice the spells they learned impressed him, but he was still more amused than anything else.

"Alright, alright. As you say, determined Ravie." Did he say, calling her with a nickname that he just came up with, based on her strict reply and the Ravenclaw sign on her robe. He was trying to joke.

Then though, Madeline started to put parchment and writing tools on his desk, so he looked up at her, startled.

"Eh... I... I..." And somehow, he no reason why he should not actually write about the charms that the professor talked about, as long as he still remembered something about them, occurred to him. It would totally do him no harm to practise writing. Besides that, spells weren't all about writing. He could only take notes of the most important things about the origin of the spell, the effect and the colour of the light, and the wand movement was all about drawing, which he had no trouble with. "'Kay... I'll try, but don't expect too much, alright?"

His notes were far from perfect, all in all, but it was better than nothing. In the middle of drawing the wand movement of the Dancing Feet Spell, he looked up and hissed at Mads: "I'm Paul, by the way. Nice to meet you."

Soon enough the the teacher told them that they would practice, he jumped up from his seat eagerly. "Finally!" Did he claim, not really looking for a partner among other students. He took his wand out again, and his eyes sparkled with enthusiasm.

He made two steps forward, to stand in front of Madeline's desk. He smiled at her with a crooked smile, rising an eyebrow and putting his hands behind his back. All that remained to be done, was bow to her theatrically and ask her to dance with him.

"Ehm, excuse me, miss ginger braids. Will you practice with me?" Did he ask her in the end.

"Ehm, excuse me, miss ginger braids. Will you practice with me?"
I look up from my parchment and notes, and see that the boy that was lazing behind me was now standing in front of me, asking me to practice as if he was asking me to go dancing or something - and hadn’t I heard him call me something else earlier - Ravie or something? What the heck is a Ravie, or whatever he said?

Picking up my wand I stand up in front of him.
“My name is Madeline. Madeline Howard - not ‘miss ginger braids’... or Ravie, or … whatever!”
I gesture wildly with my hand not holding the wand to dismiss the names.

I pause for a second, eyes looking up as I think, then I look back at him. I am somewhere in between embarrassed that I don’t know something, and upset that he called me something other than my name. I got called names plenty as a kid at home by all of the wealthier kids around, and I was NOT going to take it from some kid here that could not even remember to be on time, and take notes for class!

Then, after a half second to calm down a little, I started to think that maybe it means something else where he comes from, and maybe I am just over reacting, so I say,
“What even is a Ravie anyways?”
I don’t wait for him to respond before doing a quick little curtsy in response to his bow, and say,
“Yes, you may practice with me.”
I then raise my wand to cast the dancing feet charm on him without any warning…

“My name is Madeline. Madeline Howard - not ‘miss ginger braids’... or Ravie, or … whatever!”
Paul gave her a grimace. "Right. I didn't mean it as an insult. The braids and your hair colour are what I noticed first on you, that's all." Paul defended himself, tilting his head to a side. "Sorry. Can I call you Mads then?"

After that, he paused for a moment. Madeline apparently felt uncomfortable being called nicknames, so he breathed in to apologize. However, Madeline interrupted him, by asking:
“What even is a Ravie anyways?”
Paul grinned, barking out a laugh, his eyes sparkling in amusement. "You're Ravenclaw, I'm sure you'll figure it out."
"Yes, you may practice with me."
That was all he needed. As they stood against each other, and Mads immediately fired her spell at him, he barely got any space to try and avoid her attack. He had no idea how to make a shield to defend himself, so, evasion was the only manner to defend himself.

She was aiming at his head, so he squatted quickly, hoping she wouldn't hit him. Madeline missed, fortunately.

Paul figured this was his chance to fix his, thanks to Madeline, half destroyed charm-producing reputation. Though he'd never performed the spell before, so he was sure he wouldn't manage to do it well on the first time, because he's never done any spell well on the first attempt.

But he still had to try, it was a matter of honour.

"Tarantallegra!" Did he exclaim, moving the wand hopefully in the correct manner. However, no spell came out, only a short flash of light. It seemed as if his wand knew what he wanted it to do, and was trying, but couldn't do it just yet on full scale.

"Dammit.." Did he hiss under his breath, standing up quickly, geťting ready for another one of Madeline's charms.

"Right. I didn't mean it as an insult. The braids and your hair colour are what I noticed first on you, that’s all. Sorry. Can I call you Mads then?"
Madeline hadn’t been paying attention to what he had said, and it didn’t register until after she had sent the charm at him. Thankfully for him, her aim was high, and he was fast - really fast. He ducked down under the spell, and then just as fast he returned the gesture with his own spell. Madeline knew that she was in for it. She did not know how to block, and she was not nearly as fast as Paul. She braced herself for the spell, but the dancing legs did not come.

She heard him call out the incantation:
Tarantallegra!
It sounded correct, and when she thought about his wand movement, she thought it had been correct, so why wasn’t she suffering under the charms effects right now. Then she looked him in the eyes, and she could tell. He didn’t expect the spell to work - he doubted himself. Well that would have to change.
“So, first of all,”
She said, with her hands on her hips looking down at him,
“yes, you may call me Mads. I thought you were calling me names and making fun of me. Just don’t call me ‘miss ginger braids,’ or Ravie or anything like that.”
With one hand pointing at him she continued,
“and just for the record, I don’t always have my hair in braids, just mostly on days that end in Y.”
She holds a hand up with two fingers pointed up,
“and second thing… you have to believe in yourself and in your wand for your spells to succeed. If you don’t expect to succeed, then your wand will know that and respond accordingly. You have to have confidence in yourself abilities.”
She looks him in the eyes, and tells him,
“You are a strong and capable wizard, and you have to believe in yourself and your wand.”
She pauses for a second then continues,
“When you believe in yourself you will be able to cast the spell just as you want, and your wand will act according to your belief.”
She raised her wand and said,
“Like this,”
then she cried out the incantation with the wand pointed square at his middle, so he couldn’t dodge it this time:
Tarantallegra!
As her wand rang out, and the spell ran true and on target she smiled, and gave Paul a little wink.

“yes, you may call me Mads.”
"Deal!" The boy flashed her a smile after that, listening to her further explanation, with which he started frowning. "Oh, I'm really sorry for reminding you of it then. I was just... silly. It won't happen again though."

As she added the joke about the days, he chuckled. "You one Ravie jokester!" Did he wag his finger at her playfully. "Well, you wouldn't ever get to wear them if you lived in Germany or France." Noticed the boy, thinking aloud.
"you have to believe in yourself and in your wand for your spells to succeed."

Commented Madeline, and Paul sighed. She wasn't the first one telling him. But, he couldn't really influence that, so he just lowered his wand, taking a look at it.

"I know, I'm trying to, but..." Another sigh followed, along with a shrug. "The wand, it... it just needs to take its time, ya know? To find out if I mean for real what I'm doing." He paused for a moment, looking up at Mads. "She's just the exact opposite of me in this."
“When you believe in yourself you will be able to cast the spell just as you want, and your wand will act according to your belief.”
So he breathed in, pointing his wand at Mads again. She didn't give him a chance to perform again though. Instead, she hit him with her full-scale Tarantallegra attack. And he tried to dodge by moving to the right, he really did. But the spell licked his left arm, and he couldn't help it but started "dancing" right on the spot.

"Uh.. huh!" Did he manage to squeak out. Then, he just started to dance. Fortunately, it just didn't last long.

"Ugh, that was..." Paul commented, grimacing. "Not pleasant at all!"

He shook his head, getting his own wand ready for action. "Alright, my turn, Ravie! Tarantallegra!"
With his wand, he drew two dancing feet in the air. The thing he produced now, was a spell.

It’s always a great feeling when you realize that you have helped someone out learning something new. Or in this case, in learning to have some more confidence in themself when casting a spell. But there are times, Madeline was starting to realize, that she should just keep her mouth shut and allow others to learn on their own.

Madeline found herself dancing wilder than she had ever danced in her life - which is not saying much since she had never danced before. As soon as her Tarantallegra spell had worn off Paul raised his wand and cast it himself - and boy did he cast it. Either Madeline’s words had taken root and he was more confident in his abilities now, or he had just finally figured it out, but the spell he cast was right on and hit her square in her being, causing her legs to begin to spasm, and dance all around, and even her arms started to move - but that may have just been her trying to stay upright and keep her balance.

After the moment ended, and she stopped dancing she started to laugh, not because of any spell, but because of what had just happened.
Well you certainly do learn fast! I wont’t underestimate you next time we get to practice together.
She made a low curtsy and saluted him with her wand, before saying,
I think next time I’m gonna have to learn how to block. I’m not as fast as you to dodge the spells.
She turned to grab her things before leaving the classroom,
Until next time Gryff… Paulst… Tur… grr.. Oh, I’m no good at making nicknames!
She saluted him again with her wand,
Until next time, Mr. Turner.

"Whoa!" Paul was surprised that he managed to cast the spell successfully. "I-I... I did it? I did it! Yay!"
The wand finally chose do to trust him. He made sure it knew it wasn't a prank from his side. He meant it. And it looked like it!

So, this was what magic felt like. It was a strong, fulfilling feeling, full-scale positive. He felt it in every inch of his body, and when he cast the charm, it gathered in his chest and turned into a strong steam which flowed through the hand in which he was holding the wand. They worked in unison, him and his wand. He felt it tremble with joy and power between his fingers. He felt like he could do anything at that very moment.

He had no idea what casting a Dancing Feet Charm was supposed to feel like, it was his first spell ever casted, after all. He knew what it felt like to be casted on himself, yes. Madeline showed him, and it really wasn't pleasant. Paul didn't know how to dance either. He wasn't really the type of a guy who went to a ball or a party to dance, no. He went to have fun with friends, to play games and eat. So, yes, the time his legs spent convulsing after Madeline's charm, was the lngest and first time he was dancing too.
"I wont’t underestimate you next time we get to practice together."
Paul smiled at her with a bright grin, smacking his lips. "Good! Won't underestimate ya either. If this is what dancing feels like, I never want to dance again, ugh!"

When she told him she wanted to learn how to produce some kind of a shield, he nodded. "Yeah, that would be handy. I mean, I might be pretty good at avoiding, but that's not always helpful." Shrugged the boy. "Haven't read the curriculum though. Have you?"

As Madeline started packing her things, Paul did too. He threw his backpack on his back, over his left shoulder.

"Looking forward to that." Did he reply with a crooked smirk, waving at her. "See ya, Mads! Take care." With that, he left the classroom.
