An Unlikely Friendship
It was a Monday. Margo sighed. She'd had to rip herself out of bed much too early that morning to attend flying class, of all things. She had seriously considered hiding under her blankets for the entirety of the lesson, but then there was the possibility that someone would accuse her of being afraid. She was not afraid of flying. The dry mouth and tightening stomach she experienced whenever in the presence of a broomstick was purely down to exhilaration. She'd heard it was very common among skilled flyers... she was just immune to the constant itch telling her to get on a broomstick. Strangely, her brother said that he didn't experience any of her exhilaration symptoms when mounting a broom. Neither was he nearly sick in the bushes afterwards, which was obviously due to Margo's hasty breakfast. No, if her brother Toby could effortlessly maneuver a broomstick, then so could she.Great Lake,
After classes, nice spring day,
@Sean Hearth
Margo then decided that she'd stop overthinking her broomstick worries and focus on the beautiful day. The sun shone on the ripples of the Great Lake and she basked happily in the dappled shade of an oak tree. The gnarled tree comforted her -- if its leaves could take flight so peacefully in the breeze then surely she could too. The ridges on the bark almost seemed like they were smiling at her in sympathy, though she couldn’t imagine why. A lazy bee flew past her face, looking disgruntled to be out in the springtime but altogether adding to her oh so positive thought process. It could fly, she could fly. Margo was content.
Except, the edge of the water looked so inviting. It lapped gently at the slightly sloping bank, whispering to her to dip her toes in. It was sure to be freezing, but who was Margo to ignore a chance at spontaneity? Shrugging her long cloak off her shoulders and yanking her socks off her feet, she stepped forwards into the lake.
She squealed slightly at the cold temperature and then looked around to see if anybody nearby had heard. She was Scottish, a little bit of water wouldn’t do her any harm! Her feet would numb in response to the temperature soon enough. She was strong, bravery ran in her blood, and- was that a tentacle sticking out of the water? Margo splashed backwards with wide eyes, staring at the place where she could have sworn a black tentacle had surfaced. Could giant squids eat people? She took an extra step away from the bank in case. Unfortunately, she had not been the only witness to her little scare...

Sean had woken up early as usual, he had charms class this morning and he had decided that he would go for a walk on the grounds after. He enjoyed going for walks when the weather allowed it, it helped him think and sometimes he would even study under a tree. After his class he made his way out of the castle, the sun was shinning and a little spring breeze gently hit his face - He couldn't help but smile. As he walked along the path he couldn't help but notice how beautiful this place was and how lucky he was to be here. Before Hogwarts, Sean was just an odd kid with no friends and no social skills at all. He was still odd but he had made some friends here, he knew now that he was more than anyone in his past would have ever imagined.
He had made his way down towards the Great Lake when he noticed a girl from a far, she looked familiar but he couldn't really make out who it was from where he was and with the sunlight facing him. Sean walked towards the lake, curious to see what the person was doing - It seemed she was going in the water. As he got closer he recognized the girl in question, it was Margo White a Slytherin girl he had met during the desert decorating. What was she doing ? He got to the side of the lake just a few meters away from her when he caught a glimpse of what seemed to be a tentacle rise out of the water and go back in. Sean had read a lot about Hogwarts and it's Great Lake, could it be true that there was a giant squid living here ? There was much more than the squid in these waters but he remembered how he laughed at the thought of this creatures living in a lake. He got to Margo who seemed to have seen it too "Are you ok ?" he said a hint of worry in his voice, he was looking at her almost trying to analyse if she had been wounded or something but she looked fine. He looked back towards the spot where he had spotted the tentacle but there was nothing there anymore almost like it never even happened.

"Are you ok?"@Sean Hearth
Oh no. Margo slowly turned around to see a boy standing a few metres away looking at her with probing eyes. It was Sean, a boy she'd been much too open towards just a few days prior. For most people, this wouldn't be an issue, but Margo and her heart had a tough relationship, and Margo did not like to let her raw emotions known to the outside world. She'd left rather hurriedly once she'd felt her walls crumbling, and could already start to feel cracks forming once again. Why was Sean so nice? Why did he care if she was eaten by the giant squid? And most of all, what was she going to say about her timely exit at their last encounter?
"Me? Oh, hi Sean, I'm just peachy... how about you, feeling dandy?" She tried to prevent her inner turmoil from showing in her eyes. It wasn't going very well.
Now that her original shock had worn off, Margo decided it would be a good idea to put her socks back on. Unfortunately, her receding panic also made room for several other emotions. The main one? Curiosity. What on earth was in that lake? She hadn't questioned the headmaster's sanity before... but her growing suspicion was quickly rising. She doubted Lear wanted to hurt anyone, but a terrifying giant quid living in one of the most popular places outside of the castle? Seemed like a recipe for disaster to her. There was also that time they thought they'd seen a werewolf in the Forbidden Forest... heaven knows why somebody would build a castle next to a dangerous forest and then call it 'forbidden'. That was practically an invite! But worst of all was the required lessons on flying. Call her a muggle, but Margo did not believe that thin sticks of wood were suitable for holding a person's weight.
Then there were confusingly kind people like Sean who just made her head spin... it was safe to say that Margo was not having a good morning. "Do you know if the giant squid eats people?" She blurted out randomly, taking her first good look at the boy.
He looked to mild, so nice, so innocent... or was that just her guilt playing tricks on her? If so, her guilt was doing an awfully good job. "Look, about in the great hall... I'm sorry I left. I just remembered that my cat had my... slippers! Yeah, see he's a right little demon and I needed to sort it all out."
Maybe talking about Hades had been a bad idea - a smile was now spread across her face. The strangest thing, however, was that she didn't mind the feeling of her walls cracking anymore. Sean truly could do magic.

Sean looked at the girl he had met only a few days prior, he noticed that she didn't seem all that happy to see him. Now that he thought of it, she did leave out of the blue the other day - Had he done something wrong ? He knew his honesty could trigger people, there has been more than one incident in his past but he didn't feel like she was annoyed at him more like she was afraid ?
"Me? Oh, hi Sean, I'm just peachy... how about you, feeling dandy?"
He looked at her for a second, thinking if he should ask her what was wrong but decided that whatever it was it probably wasn't something she would feel comfortable telling him. "I'm happy you're ok, what were you doing in the water ?" he had never really seen anyone even set one foot in the water. He was intrigued by Margo, he was a curious person and she seemed to have a lot going on which made him even more curious. He looked back at the water, it seemed as normal and quiet as any other lake now. Sean had a theory about the huge squid, he didn't think he was the only one after reading about it.
"Do you know if the giant squid eats people?"
Sean smiled at her "From what I've read I don't think so" there was something about knowing these facts that made him feel happy. He didn't know much about the wizarding world so it was nice when he could answer someone's question. "I think it's pretty harmless to humans and I've heard it will even let you feed it bread but I'm not entirely sure about that information" He looked at her wondering what she thought of this information.
"Look, about in the great hall... I'm sorry I left. I just remembered that my cat had my... slippers! Yeah, see he's a right little demon and I needed to sort it all out."
Sean was taken a bit a back from this, he didn't expect her to say anything about that but he was even more taken a back by the fact that it was obviously a lie. Why would her cat have her slippers and how would she know while being in the Great Hall with him ? He looked at her wondering if he should ask or not but if she didn't want to tell him then she probably had a good reason to. "Don't worry about it, I hope your slippers are ok" he smiled at her, whatever the reason was if she wanted to keep it for herself then he wasn't going to force it out of her.
"What class did you have this morning ?" He wanted to change the subject but also wanted to know a bit more about her.

Margo stared at Sean. Was he asking for an explanation for her spontaneity? If so, he obviously didn’t know her very well yet. Margo huffed. He hadn’t seemed too annoyed at her timely exit the other day, and if that wasn’t spontaneous then she didn’t know what was. Selfless people were so confusing. She could dip her toes in the lake if she so desired. But if Sean wanted an answer, then an answer he’d get. Only, Margo wasn’t sure it would be quite what he was expecting...@Sean Hearth
“Why I was merely following the winds of change and registering how delightful the water looked on this fine day.” She batted her eyelashes for effect.
“T’was pretty freezing though, and I was about to be ambushed by the giant squid.” She grumbled, her tone at a stark contrast to her previous speech. She wondered if Sean would think her barking mad. He seemed like an accepting kind of bloke, but everyone had their limits... now, why did she want to frown at that thought? She didn’t care for the other boy - he was practically her opposite! She was pretty certain that he didn’t suffer from drastically changing moods and actually thought before he spoke. Fancy that! Whilst Margo kept most people at arms length with harsh words and unpredictable mood swings, Sean had a far greater weapon. Kindness. Simple phrases like “I’m happy you’re ok.” packed a punch that Margo was pretty sure the other boy was unaware of... and they left her feeling so confused.
The boy continued on as if Margo wasn’t having a mini crisis right in front of him, reassuring her that the giant squid was, in fact, harmless. She privately thought that she’d have to be heavily blackmailed to even go near the lake with a piece of bread, now that she knew the squid liked it. Call her a coward, but self preservation was not a skill to be underestimated! She was surviving Sean’s kindness, after all.
“Read a lot then? To which book do I owe my thanks? I thought I might die back there.” Merlin, she was really going overboard with the whole ‘honesty’ notion. And then there was the smirk stretched across her face that she couldn’t get rid of. Worst of all, it was a friendly smirk.
Luckily, the horrible fuzzy feelings around her heart were wiped away when Sean inquired what class she had been forced to attend that morning. Margo sucked in a deep breath for support. She’d already lied to the poor boy, even using her cat as an excuse. As much as she tried to fool herself, she did have morals, and they were making themselves uncomfortably prominent at that moment in time.
“I had flying.” She admitted, knowing that Sean would likely catch the flash of dislike in her eyes. “How about you?”

Sean couldn't help but laugh a bit at the way she had answered his question, he realized that it was a bit of a stupid question to ask. She didn't really need a reason but being the way he was he still wanted to know "I've never met someone like you" He meant it in the nicest way possible, it wasn't easy to make Sean laugh even if she wasn't trying to. He hoped it wouldn't offend her, truth was he actually enjoyed her company and wanted to be friends with her. He looked at the lake "It is a beautiful place" looked back at Margo, she had a look on her face that Sean couldn't figure out what it was, was she worried about something ?
Yeah, reading is kind of my thing" he seemed a bit embarrassed, reading wasn't the most exciting hobby out there. "I read about the squid in "Hogwarts A History" and then just heard a few other students talking about it" Sean was pretty observant but also couldn't help but over hear conversations that seemed interesting, he wasn't proud of it but there is a lot to learn about this world and some things you just can't find out in books. He looked at Margo who had a smirk on her face, he smiled at her "Who knows maybe it was just saying hi".
He then asked about her previous class and when she answered he noticed that she didn't seem to like the subject. Sean didn't like flying much either, maybe because he wasn't very good at it and usually required help from his best friend Aaron to get him out of whirling around the sky, he shivered a bit a the thought of that memory. "You don't like flying ? I'm not very good at it so I usually dread it too. Although I have gotten pretty found of watching Quidditch" his usual cold resting face was back "I had charms class, probably one of my favorite classes and coincidentally the one I am the best at with potions" He was giving a lot of information which usually he wouldn't do but he really wanted to connect with her.

Margo’s expression brightened considerably at Sean’s laughter. He seemed to like that she was different and was entertained by her theatrics. Her heart expanded at the thought, tired of being held in place by her crumbling willpower. Nobody could take away her independence, but it was nice to be able to place her affections on someone without having to worry that they’d shrug them off.@Sean Hearth
“I’ve never met someone like you either.” she confided. And it was true — Sean’s blatant honesty surprised her at every turn, the way he could be both upfront and reserved making her head spin. She hadn’t gotten close to many people at Hogwarts, seeking out interactions only when she felt the need to express her individuality to the world. Something about Sean made her less averse to a constant lifestyle. Perhaps even the most familiar of things can provide a challenge...
“Aye, it’s beautiful alright.” She looked out over the grounds in contentment. “Maybe I will come feed the giant squid sometime in the future.” Margo always seemed to keep a fairly easygoing mood around Sean, and she couldn’t pass it off as a coincidence anymore. Usually she’d remain dramatic until the end, but her giving into another’s suggestion that scared her was unheard of. Where was some self preservation when you needed it?
“I don’t think reading’s boring.” Margo said bluntly, picking up on Sean’s embarrassment. Unfortunately, discretion was not her forte. A big part of her wanted Sean to be bolder, and what better way to encourage him? She didn’t care if he danced naked on the rooftops... if only he knew that.
“Actually, many of the world’s greatest innovators were inspired by books... me, for example.” She winked. Margo was not particularly adept at being modest either. Sean’s embarrassment for liking something as natural as reading confounded her. Didn’t Hogwarts have an entire house devoted to intelligence and wit? Hadn’t they glossed over house prejudices in their previous meeting? It wasn’t like the library was there for decoration...
Margo’s eyes sparkled with joy as Sean explained his own flying woes. “Finally someone who understands! Everyone here seems to be quidditch crazy. I much prefer potions too. All those interesting colours and aromas? I’d rather be by a cauldron than precariously balanced on a broomstick any day.”

Sean looked at her while she talked, he noticed that she seemed a lot more comfortable now. She must have been a bit agitated by the squids appearance and had calmed down he thought. He couldn't help but smile a bit when she said she hadn't met anyone like him either, it was the first time somebody had said that to him in a nice way. Before Hogwarts he was considered a freak by most because of the odd things that would happen around him and his emotionless resting face. Of course Hogwarts was different, he didn't seem that odd anymore or at least there was far more odd things going on.
"Oh, so you're an innovator ?" there was a hint of playfulness in his voice which didn't suit him very much. But he was still curious to know what she meant by that, had she created something ? He wasn't much of an innovator, actually now that he thought about he wasn't much of anything yet. He had ambition probably more than a Hufflepuff usually has, if a subject interested him enough he would try his best to master it. He looked at Margo who without a doubt was a lot more confident than him "I was actually taking a walk around the grounds, do you want to join me ?". He felt a bit nervous for some reason, he had felt comfortable up until now why was asking that question any different ? Was it a creepy question ? He didn't know her that well yet but he wanted to. A part of him also wanted to know why she had lied to him about the reason she left last time and the other part just wanted to get to know her better.

Margo smirked. ”Changing the world one stitch at a time.” She gestured to the colourful embroidery on her boots as she spoke, sitting down to tug them on. She didn’t know why she was loosening up around Sean, probably just because there was a necessity for balance. She couldn’t be dramatic all the time... well okay, maybe she could. However, overthinking everything was getting a little tedious. She enjoyed being spontaneous, it was part of being Margo, so she vowed from then on to go with the flow... even if it meant contradicting herself.
“So maybe I’m not changing the world just yet. Doesn’t mean I won’t in the future. I could never sit at a desk all day... it would be too boring, ya know?” She personally thought that she was getting much better at the whole ‘selective honesty’ thing. She hadn’t revealed too much about herself, and kept the conversation going in an interesting direction... but why did it matter? Margo doubted Sean would go and sell her personal details after they spoke — he probably wouldn’t get any money for them anyway. The truth was, she was still scared to reveal her heart.
Fortunately, she was saved from this daunting notion by Sean inquiring if she wanted to join him on a walk. Margo privately thought that the word ‘walk’ was a little boring, and that she’d prefer the words ‘prance’ or ‘explore’ instead, but the general idea seemed innocent enough. She pushed herself to her feet and looped her arm with Sean’s, her expression falling slightly when she realised that the boy was a centimetre or two taller than her. However, it wasn’t all bad for she had a very good view of the expressions on the poor boy’s face. Was he...nervous? Perhaps she wasn’t the only one afraid to be nice. Only, if this was Sean’s ‘severe’ mask, she couldn’t begin to image what was underneath.
“So, got any professions in mind for when we’re unleashed upon the world?” She asked questioningly, her curiosity snagged once again. Luckily, she was no longer afraid of being devoured by a mass of tentacles... though Sean’s unknown intentions came close. Kindness was truly a powerful weapon.

Sean smiled at Margo who showed her embroidery, she was really something he thought. Changing the world, he had never really thought about it that much, he didn't know anything about this world yet so to think about changing it.. He definitely wanted to make an impact or at least be remembered for something good "I agree, that would be boring". He then nervously asked if she would like to join him on his walk and to his surprise she looped her arm with his, he looked at her unknowingly blushing a bit and then just looked straight forward and started walking slowly. He tried not to make eye contact with her, he had never had any girl just take his arm like she just did and for some reason it had effected him.
She then asked if he had any idea of what he wanted to do after Hogwarts, his eyes still looking straight ahead "I always thought I would end up being a teacher, or a writer but.." He took a few seconds before continuing, his answer felt a bit foolish but there was another profession he would like to do "I've recently been thinking about something in the law enforcement.. Not sure what that's called in the wizarding world". As much as he looked emotionless and cold, Sean had a protecting nature towards anyone. He had been mistreated by others for his differences most of his life and thought that helping people like him, people that didn't want to have to fight back would be something he would do. To him there wasn't a better reason to fight than to protect those that can't. He still looked forward while thinking about his reasoning behind his answer he had a stern look while doing so and then smiled a bit "What about you any plans ?
