Ever since his birthday, Flash had a seemingly infinite resource for books on the subjects he was interested in. He didn't completely understand how the special room Burnett showed him worked, but it seemed as long as he wished for something to help his studies, he got a new selection of books to choose from. Sometimes they were books that weren't actually all that relevant, but more often than not, there was at least one book that was nowhere in the library that he could sink into and broaden his wealth of knowledge. It was almost like a fun game to see what he would get.

That day was especially good for him, as the book he got in the lottery was one about herbology-- Earthwise Herbology: Magic in Medical Science. A fascinating topic, it was the first author he had seen who tried to link the fields of medical science and herbology to better understand both. So many magical authors were still afraid of studying muggle technology and advancement, sometimes they were blacklisted or restricted from publishing by some red tape. The reality was that books on muggle technology didn't sell.

Flash was glad to be given such rare gem, instead of paging through it idly in the secret greenhouse, he took it around the castle with him to pour through thoroughly. He thought he might be able to share it with Willow as well, since she was also interested in making healing salves with muggle magic. He had been delighted enough that he hadn't realized until a while into his page-turning that someone had started to hover around him. It was only after she muttered something inaudible that he turned and saw her. A short blonde girl had been looking at him, for who knows how long.

"Can I help you, Miss?"

Flash didn't like being watched without his knowing. He also left enough of an impression on the school that he was leery of random encounters with strangers. She could be someone out to get him, or besmirch his name. It was always something.

Rosalyn had been in the Study Room all morning. She had woken up early to watch the sunrise and then quickly hurried to the room where she figured she would spend the rest of her day reading. With her deep interest in flowers and Herbology, she had hoped that she would find a good book on the topic, but Rosalyn was out of luck. She ended up picking up ‘One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi’ by Phyllida Spore. Rosalyn has read the book over and over, at least ten times, so it was mostly imprinted into her brain.

After reading a few of the very familiar pages, Rosalyn got very bored and decided to look around the room, trying to find something or someone interesting. Her gaze finally settled on a brown haired, Slytherin boy. In his hands held a book Rosalyn had never seen before, which was very uncommon. He looked very focused on the book, so she decided to get a closer look. She found out that the title of the book was ‘Earthwise Herbology: Magic in Medical Science’. She had never ever seen this book before, much less read it. Rosalyn made it her goal to ask where the Slytherin got that book, even though she was more quiet that social.

Walking around to his side of the table, she stood there for a second, figuring out what she was going to say.

“Hello”, Rosalyn mumbled quietly.

She wondered if he had heard her or not until she heard him reply with “Can I help you, Miss?”

Rosalyn was rethinking her choice to ask about the book. Maybe it would be better if I kept to myself, she thought. Even though her brain was overthinking, she decided to reply.

“Hello, I’m Rosalyn. I was wondering where you got that book, because I haven’t seen it before.”

Flash watched her expression carefully to try to discern her intentions while she talked. She was a Gryffindor name Rosalyn, at least she had been immidiately forthwrite about that. The way she fidgeted on the spot, starting and stopping her words, he could tell she was probably just a nervous first year like many of the rest of them. He had to fight to keep away the feeling that everyone was out to get him, even though a time or two he was proven right. At least he could expect most Gryffindors to be direct and honest, for the most part.

That didn't change that he couldn't tell her about Burnett's magic room. Not only was it too powerful to be exposed to a complete stranger, but even if he did try to explain, there was a chance she wouldn't believe him.

It was an undesireable spot to be in, he neither wanted to lie nor unceremoniously tell her to mind her own business. He was supposed to be a gentleman, and she had only been curious. When he thought about it, it was not the kind of book he would normally expect someone to be curious about.

That was it, a diversion.

"I see, are you perhaps interested in the integration of muggle technology in the field of herbology?" If true, he would certainly like to get to know this girl better. "I admit I probably should be studying something else, but I can't help but want to know more."

Even though he had intended it as a means of avoiding the original question, Flash couldn't help but light up when he talked about the subject. Even when only just reading about them, he loved nature. It was still amazing to him that there was plantlife that grew with magic inside of it. Even after reading so much, he was still curious.

As Rosalyn fiddled and fidgeted while wait for the boy to answer, she saw him carefully watching her. She assumed that he didn’t trust many people or was just cautious with others. When he finally spoke, he answered her question with another question. She noticed that he had dodged the question of where the book was from, but decided against asking again.

“I am deeply interested in Herbology and plants. It intrigues me to learn how everything works and nature is just so beautiful. I do not know much about the muggle world, so it would be great to have some information on how muggle things fit totether with Herbology. Plus, I’ve read almost every book about Herbology in this castle, so I’m looking for something new.” Rosalyn slightly smiled at the boy before realizing that she hadn’t asked his name yet
“Oh Merlin, I’m sorry for being rude. What’s your name?”

Rosalyn scolded herself in her head for not asking for the boys name sooner. She ranted about her love nature and plants without even bothering to wonder about it. She became very quiet and started to twiddle her thumbs, as well as bite the inside of her lip. Rosalyn wondered if the boys name was something unique like North or Basil.

As Flash listened, the premise of the encounter became perfectly clear. She was a lover of herbology and books, it was her intersecting interests with the book he held in his hand that made her come out of her shell to approach him. Flash, frankly, was just not used to having such innocuous encounters. For a moment he actually felt like a normal kid.

Back at his private school growing up, most of the kids had a reputation from their families before they even had a chance to make a name for themselves. Living in the area and having the last name Holmwood was like being illuminated in a bright red light, constantly drawing the attention of children whose parents insisted they try to ride his coattails. At Hogwarts, he had finally become anonymous enough that he could try to stand a reputation on his own terms, though he realized with time that it was a herculean task that would take endless hours of hard work. Hours he was spending reading about plants instead.

He was doing a bad job on that day as well, making the shy girl uncomfortable and not properly introducing himself. After being beaten down by so many failures and trials, Flash’s grip hold on his manners and presentation were faltering. He needed to start making a concerted effort to come across the right way again. Genuine or not, the very least he could be was polite and accommodating.

”Oh, forgive me, I'm the one who is being rude, Miss Rosalyn.” Flash stood so he could offer his hand to shake. ”I’m Flash Holmwood. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Sitting back down, he placed a small black feather into the page he was on and closed the book, admiring its cover.

”This is an uncommon book, I’m sure to never find it again if you lose it. Since you’re such a lover of books, can I trust you’ll take good care of it if I lend it to you?” He lifted the book into the air, waving it. ”Because if you do, I have more where this came from. I don’t mind sharing knowledge if it’s with someone who respects it.”

Rosalyn watched as the boy stood up in front of her and introduced himself. He did indeed have a unique name like she thought. Rosalyn shook his hand and was surprised at how polite he was. Most of the boys that she had encountered had been rude or stuck up. Flash on the other hand, appeared to have a different approach. Rosalyn smiled and replied,

“It’s a pleasure to meet you as well Mister Flash.”

When Flash sat down and admired the book, she never would have thought that he would offer the book and others after for her to borrow, Rosalyn was shocked. An immediate look of joy flashed upon her face before she answered the kind and polite boy.

“Oh Merlin, thank you! You have no idea how much I appreciate this. I promise to take amazing care of it and return it in the best shape possible. I won’t let anything happen to it.”

Rosalyn wondered why he would let a complete stranger borrow one of his precious books. She felt overwhelming happy and her body language showed it. She looked like a little kid on Christmas morning. She felt as if she had to give him something back, so she rummaged through her bag and found a chocolate frog. She handed it to the boy and said,

“Here, for the kindness.”

The way her face lit up when the book was offered outright-- a treasure. Flash lived for the moments when a person was truly grateful to him. It was the joy of human kindness, something sometimes so rare in an often unforgivable world. Seeing faces like the one she wore made Flash’s errant, out-of-control kindness worth it every time. In the end, things were only things, they came and went with time. Books would deteriorate into dust, the planet would be consumed by the sun, but happiness was felt in the moment. It was fleeting, but if he continued to chase it, he would get to enjoy the feeling time and time again.

It was a wonder why anyone bothered to be stingy and protective. Well, there was a part of him that knew his feelings were different than others, though he had not yet figured out why. It felt like he must have been born wrong, the way others always seemed to question his behavior. Both before and after he got his extensive training in proper manners, he never seemed to think the same way others did. So instead, he spent most of his time trying to be whoever his speaking companion wanted him to be. It was a big hit, people liked feeling like someone understood them.

Rosalyn, for instance, may have come over wishing she could somehow be allowed to read the book she was interested in. Unusual for someone to give up a book of their own to a complete stranger, in the middle of reading it no less, but Flash tended to snatch up any opportunity he got to play the hero. He couldn’t actually know for sure if he could trust her to bring the book back, but at least he had given her an incentive to. If he was lucky, she might even want to discuss the books with him in turn. He enjoyed discussion to begin with, but even more so when it came to a challenging book. It helped him grasp the concepts much better, considering things he might have never thought himself.

Having a well-rounded perspective was important to him, including the perspective of the happy girl in front of him, offering him a piece of candy. Not wanting to ruin the good mood by refusing, Flash took the present and gingerly tucked it away in his things. He could always give it to Alan or Sylvain.

”I’ll accept this today, but don’t feel as if you owe me anything.” Flash made sure to assert his position on future gifts, without specifically mentioning that he didn’t like sweets. He wanted to avoid her suddenly feeling awkward for any reason. ”Actually, I would be glad if you would simply tell me your thoughts once you’ve finished it. If you’re so interested in herbology, I think I would like to pick your mind.”

Flash officially handed the book over, plenty other library books stacked up to the side of him for him to crack open.

”I come to the study room almost every evening after classes. If I’m not reading something I feel like I’m wasting my time.” It was a bit more personal information than strictly needed to be shared, but Flash was in a good mood after seeing Rosalyn’s joyous reaction. ”How about you, I assume you enjoy reading a great deal if you’ve read all the library books on herbology. That’s hardly a minuscule task.”

Rosalyn was jubilant with the fact that Flash had allowed her to borrow the fascinating book. In spite of the two just meeting each other, Rosalyn thought of Flash as a new friend. A huge grin appeared upon her face while listening to the boy speak to her. While Flash spoke about being in the study room almost every day, Rosalyn was curious to why she hadn’t seen him previously, but she supposed she could have been too focused on books and studying. When he inquired about her reading habits, Rosalyn was more than willing to answer.

“I spend a lot of time in the study room as well. I really enjoy reading as it gets my mind off of things occurring in the outside world. I read so much about Herbology, because nature really interests me.”

Rosalyn fiddled with the book in excitement, while speaking to Flash. She decided to take a seat in the chair next to the boy, and prop open the book. She was more than ready to start the first chapter of this book.
While reading the first few sentences, her face lit up with joy. Looking back up at Flash, she gave a small grin. After checking the clock, Rosalyn decided that she better go.

“It’s getting rather late, would you mind if I left now? Thank you so much for the company. I promise to bring the book back tomorrow in tip-top shape.”

Flash realized the pleasant little conversation was coming to an end. Most likely the bookworm was a bit too excited about the contents of her new quarry to focus on a diverting discussion. It was no matter, he could understand the feeling as well. He was only struck with a moment of brief loneliness, now wondering what he was going to do with his evening now that the book was out of his hands. He could always return to the room to see what new book he could fish for, but getting in was such a chore. Perhaps he could try to find someone that would gladly divert his attention away from his less desirable thoughts. It was rude to try to keep the poor girl when she was mostly only interested in the book to begin with, not Flash.

"Oh, right, of course." Flash threw his smile back up, no sign of unhappiness visible. "Tomorrow it is then. I look forward to it."

Flash looked a moment at the books beside him, none of them jumping out as particularly engaging. He felt like he needed to find a person instead. He would even just walk up and down the halls to find a familiar face if that was what it took. Either way, he packed up his things into his back and slung it over his shoulder.

"Have a lovely evening Miss Rosalyn."
