Gryffindor vs Slytherin: Match 1
Ara couldn't help herself.
Despite all that pain pulsing through her body and her head feeling light, she found the need to let out a loud cackle—the pangea dweller (Hanako Tone) had passed out before her and the glass cannon. The few seconds of rest they had she spent grabbing her stomach in a fit of laughter. He'd been so smug and spitting out "cool" responses for what?
To be honest, the fourth year thought that she'd be the first to go —much like Mahlioz last stage— but the mesozoic era survivor proved her very wrong. So much for a bet.
Speaking of the bet, the Gryffindors brought it up again. OWH HELL NAWH. "Not getting into that. The other two probably would though" She didn't consent to it at the start anyway, nor did she have high hopes of winning (then and now). Those darn seniors betting whatever scraps they got. She wasn't about to sacrifice her dignity and pride to follow a stupid little bet the grandpa and Jack Burnett put up.
She felt utterly useless in this duel. Her spells didnt hit, her team's spells didn't hit. Her body felt like shi. The hate of the dueling gods towards her hieroglyphics writer of a teammate followed him everywhere with no exceptions. Ara felt bad for Burnett —they had no choice but to be stuck with the bad omen that was the old man both in and out of dueling. Perhaps if Burnett were to be put in a match without the walking disgrace, they'd thrive. Oh well.

Kim couldn't help but smirk at Hana's wink, there was just something he really liked about the Slytherin. He couldn't explain it, maybe it was just because Hana had been one of the first students he'd met when coming to Hogwarts. Or perhaps the first one to make him feel more comfortable there. As for Jack, well he didn't really know what he was saying to him. He was just spouting off words, attempting to distract him from the duel at hand. It seemed as if sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. But at least it was doing something, that was all that mattered. This time it seemed as if it had gone right because Jack's spell had missed both of his targets. But this time around, Kim would try not to let anything get to him or distract him from the duel at hand. This time, he'd make sure to do some damage to his opponents!
It actually worked, focusing only on casting his spell and the accuracy of said spell and his Cracker Jinx went off all over the place. Unfortunately, his spell had been a little too strong for him, and he ended up catching himself in the blast radius too. But it was worth it because all of his opponents got hit with it too!
A grin came to his lips again, even though the damage had hurt him. "Well, damn. Didn't think I'd get swept up in it too. Maybe it was a little too strong!" He said with a shake of his head. Eve had also gotten off her Cracker Jinx and completely destroyed every single one of their opponents. It must have hurt a lot. Even Rose managed to make contact with her target, which had been Hana. Poor Hana, getting hit by every single one of his opponents. Kim sensed a spell coming from Hana towards him but realized he didn't have to worry when nothing came out. It seemed as if his birthday was cursed and Kim shook his head. He'd felt that way before too back when he'd been a second year. Jack hadn't cast any offensive spells at them and Ara had chosen to heal herself, a smart move. Well, at least things were moving again with this duel and the mod must have been entertained by the sudden activity of the Lions.

| xx | That promise of defeat delivered itself upon the vibrant backs and concussive explosions of countless crackers as they lit up the piste in a display that was as eye-catching for the audience as it was destructive for its victims. Each and every one of the serpents felt the sting of Evelynn's bite twice over. And while the match wouldn't quite be over just yet, the collective efforts of the lions ensured the first casualty. "One down—" Evelynn cooed beneath the call for the match to pause. Her head cocked slightly to one side, gaze sliding impartially down the length of her nose towards their opponents. "—Two to go." The hint of an assured smile tugged at the corner of her mouth as the unconscious birthday boy was whisked away to the safe embrace of the healers standing by. "You could always change your minds, you know." She shrugged a brow and gestured towards the stairs. "There is no shame in acknowledging when you are defeated.." |

Jack cursed his lack of dueling experience and his inability to foresee what he should have foreseen -
of course they would have gone after Hanako. He had still been suffering from the deterioration curse that had been cast upon him previously by Evelynn. He should have cast a healing or protection spell on Hanako instead of himself!
Evelynn the mountain lion wasn't a lion for no reason, though. Her aggressive onslaught of hostile attacks combined with the attacks of her teammates finished off the more experienced duelist of the two Slytherin seventh years. Much to Jack's despair and Ara's...amusement, Hanako was the first duelist of the duel to be knocked out.
So much for being an intern healer, he thought to himself since he knew Hanako could no longer hear said thoughts. He wouldn't let him live that down, especially not the next time he worried and fretted over the stubborn fool.
Aislin stopped the duel long enough for Hanako to be removed from the vicinity and then restarted it. Jack cast Ara a quick glance, wondering how she was faring. Though she released a rather loud cackle once Hanako had passed out, he doubted she could have actually preferred the situation to what it could have been instead. And he doubted she was feeling as jovial about their circumstances as she seemed.
Sure, he could understand why she might have found it amusing that her upperclassman had gone down before she had, especially after all his bluff and bluster. But he knew Hanako; had known him for many years, now. He knew how the parselmouth often used such talk to conceal his insecurities, doubts, and other weaknesses.
He liked to pretend to be selfish, but if he was really such a selfish person, Jack doubted he would have been the first one knocked out. He had probably been so busy focusing on his teammates that he hadn't thought to look out for his own well-being. And he was a better teammate than Jack was for it, that was for sure.
"Sorry, Villa," he apologized quietly and privately to her with a wry smile. "I know you got stuck with a pair of pretty incompetent upperclassmen and that wasn't fair to you. But how about we at least do our best to see this through for as long as we can?"
It was then that he heard Rose speak and turned back to her and her team. "Brainstorm away. But the duel isn't over yet," the Welsh teen reminded them. "And there may not be shame in acknowledging when we're defeated, no. But that's not yet what we are. So I think we'll carry on, thank you very much."
He took up a more determined stance, ready to fight like a desperate animal until he could fight no longer. He felt he owed it to Hanako to do that much, at least.

14th February 2026
Day 1 - Morning slot
With Hanako out, Gryffindor was confident. It hung around them clearly enough for even the spectators at the very back of the bleachers to see. They'd seemed pretty confident since walking in, but now they had the numbers advantage, and with it, they regrouped. Rose healed Kim, that same impressive glow of a spell, and Evelynn and Kim simultaneously tried to silence their opponents, only with very different results.
Evelynn, in a continuation of the duelling prowess that had Aislin regarding her with slightly starry eyes, pulled off a bright, flawless Tongue-Tying Spell. Ara's attempt to jump in front of it -- selfless or strategic, maybe both -- wasn't quite fast enough to stop it from reaching Jack and blocking control of his own tongue. In sharp contrast, Kim's was a self-contained disaster. His spell blew backward to curl up his own tongue, though it wasn't so loud and explosive as the average duelling backfire.
Slytherin had no luxury of slowing down. Before Evelynn could stop him, Jack reached deep for what would be a grand show of magic and incanted Confringo... to nothing. Anticlimactic and probably guttingly disappointing for Slytherin, Jack just didn't have another powerful cast in him so soon. And with him tongue-tied, Ara was left halfway alone against two seventh years.

Note: If you were following the roll channel, this round might have been pretty confusing. I mixed up Evelynn and Rose's actions and then didn't double-check for precedent during my original attempt to correct for that. Unfortunately the mistakes presented quite different round outcomes, but this is almost definitely the messiest moderation will be, so thanks for sticking with me.

[quote]
Their banter lived on, with Ara turning down Evelynn's bet when Rose mentioned it, Evelynn herself taunting the snakes again, and Jack expressing his determination that they weren't finished yet.
The seventh year Slytherin should have knocked on wood after saying that, because as the clock ticked down, the snakes' position didn't get any better. Rose turned her wand on Evelynn again, utilizing her healing skills to keep up the health of her teammates. Both Kim and Jack moved to cast a spell, but it was no use for either of them. Evelynn's spell was successful, though, hitting Jack despite Ara's efforts to throw herself in front of him and causing him to fall silent.
Rose glanced over at her teammates, all three lions in much more of a stable condition than their opponents, and steeled her gaze once more at the other side of the piste.

| xx | There was a time for witty retorts and verbal sparring in a duel, and then there was a time for focused—and quiet—action. Jack likely would have been better served to seek the latter. His apology to Ara coupled with his response to the lion's goading drew the loft of a sculpted brow. Whether it was wishful thinking or a state of truly believing that he somehow had a chance, Evelynn couldn't quite tell. The effect was the same, her expression reflecting a subtle pity as she returned, "Oh but it certainly is where you are at," right before following it up with a spell that would ensure he couldn't argue back. "Avert your wand and you will at least be able to walk from the piste with your head held high. If you do not..." Well, she really didn't have to elaborate. He would soon enough join Tone, swept from the floor like dust from an abandoned class. |

Eve was doing pretty well with entangling their opponents with her words. If he had been the talkative sort, he might have done the same, backed her up with some choice words of his own. But Kim wasn't exactly someone who tended to talk much, unless it was during one of the clubs he ran, and Eve was doing pretty well on her own. He'd always admired her way with words. Hana got taken out, something Kim didn't really find surprising considering Hana didn't appear to be good at evading spells. Maybe he should suggest they spend some time together and work on his evasion later. Much like Hana had helped him in the beginning with his flying skills. He got distracted though by a very loud and hilarious cackle... from Ara... of all people. Why was Ara laughing at Hana being taken out? Wasn't she on his team? Kim blinked, wondering what the reason was and glanced over at Jack. How was he reacting to her reaction? He'd seemed annoyed when Kim had been smiling before. But in Kim's mind, Ara's cackle and fit of laughter over Hana getting taken out was way worse! However, maybe Ara had a reason, perhaps she was stressed and laughter was the only way for her to cope with this. He'd pay Hana a visit at the hospital wing later just to make sure he was fine afterward. Despite being his opponent, Hana was also his friend.
Eve's spell went off without a hitch. It was a beautiful one and hit her target perfectly. Unfortunately, for Kim, it didn't go off well for him at all. Perhaps it was because he'd never really cast that particular spell before and was a little new at it. He ended up muting himself which wasn't exactly the kind of thing he'd wanted to have happen. Ara had done a good job at avoiding his spell, despite being one school year younger. He'd have to work on it after this match and get it down so this kind of thing wouldn't happen again. Rose successfully healed him though and that felt good, feeling some energy come back into him. He wanted to thank Rose but wasn't able to vocally do so at the moment. So instead, Kim merely tried to make eye contact with her and gave her a smile. Ara had tried to bodyblock for Jack but had failed and Jack's own spell had failed spectacularly, much like Kim's own. Well, at least they were similar in that regard for this round.

What is she doing. Quite frankly, Ara didn't know as well but either way, she did nothing to contribute to the match. She was being the puny junior she was. Burnett apologizing didn't console her as much as she would've wanted it to. In fact, it made her want to join the ancient specimen (Hanako Tone) in the hospital wing.
Ara looked Burnett in the eye and nodded slightly in response. She wasn't doing well, physically, mentally, and performance-wise and it frustrated her to the core. Can't she just pass out already?

The seventh year remaining on the Slytherin team sensed his standing teammate was tired. She hadn't even bothered to respond to her words to him verbally. He knew she probably would have liked to forfeit by then, perhaps, and maybe a more reasonable team would have, but Jack doubted the Gryffindors would have appreciated it - at least any who appreciated a challenge - and he couldn't bring himself to throw in the towel even for Ara's sake. He wanted to see things through to the end.
Unfortunately, Eve had quieted Jack, which was just about the worst blow she could have dealt him in his opinion. His own tongue had become literally tied so he couldn't even speak for two rounds and he doubted he would last that long. Thus, he couldn't talk back when she spoke to him, but he smiled sheepishly and gave her a shrug between rounds, wanting her to realize lions weren't the only ones who could be stubborn and steadfast.
No one else really seemed to have much to say, anyway. Jack's thoughts wandered back to Hanako and he wondered how the parselmouth was doing. Hopefully he wouldn't hate his guts when he woke up. If the date really was his birthday, it would have been a rotten one, indeed. He would have to try to make it up to him later. Somehow.
