At Least the Plants are Warm
Marilyn had already experienced one Herbology class. It was mostly a simple introduction class; nothing really happened. Marilyn was anxious for the real fun to start, when they'd start actually learning about plants and use them for homework! The night before, she struggled to sleep due to all the thoughts swimming in her head about what the class would be like this time. She knew staying up too much would be dangerous because Herbology was the first class this day and she still had classes afterwards... but she couldn't help it! She only had a few solid hours of sleep before dim blue light began to shine through the dorm windows.Early-to-Mid September
With a silent huff, Marilyn decided now that since it was beginning to get light her internal clock wouldn't let her sleep anyway. She got out of bed, doing her best to be silent so she wouldn't wake up her roommates. Just because she couldn't sleep didn't mean she didn't have to wake up those who were able to! She grabbed her book bag, placing what she thought she'd need for the day within; textbooks for each class, parchment, her quill and ink.... After a moment of thought, she figured she'd put one of her leisure books inside it too. The books made it fairly heavy, but she slung it over her shoulder and figured At least I won't be carrying it all the time. I'll set it down during classes, anyway!
By the time she left the common room, cleaned up and dressed in her uniform, the dim blue light had turned into more of a blue-white. Breakfast in the main hall wouldn't be served for a couple hours, at the least, so she figured a quick sneak down to the kitchens for a small bite wouldn't hurt. The kitchen elves were already getting to work, but happily handed her some toast with marmalade spread thick across. Along with some water, it was plenty enough for her until lunch.
Outside the castle, the light was bright with the sky still a light blue with pink and orange swirls of clouds. The air was crisp and chilly, and though Marilyn hadn't thought to bring her winter cloak she wished she had. When it got closer to winter, she definitely didn't want to forget!
By now, she knew most of her way around. At least, she could make her way to classes within twenty minutes at the latest. Sometimes it made her late, but she was getting better at it. Since she was so early, there was no chance she'd be late this time, at least. Herbology was still quite the trek from the Hufflepuff Common Room, the morning dew soaking her shoes, pant cuffs and hem of her robe. She shivered and could see her breath at this time of morning, but there wasn't much she could do. The library probably wouldn't be open for student use for a while. She couldn't just stay in the Common Room with nothing to do. Even going to the Greenhouse wasn't going to take long compared to the time she had to wait. Maybe her body would remember the agony of having to wait hours for a class to start and actually let her sleep.
As she neared the Greenhouse, though, she noticed someone was already in the area. Was she as excited as Marilyn, having come to the Greenhouse unable to wait the couple hours until class? She noticed her uniform has red where she had yellow; this girl was a Gryffindor! Marilyn approached, and as she got closer she waved and spoke. "Hello! Didn't expect to find someone else here! You excited for Herbology, too? I couldn't sleep a wink, I gave up when the sun came up!"

At Least the Plants are Warm
Fiona hadn't necessarily planned on waking up as early as she did. Most people would have just gone back to sleep, but the way the dark sky started to break with the light yellows and oranges was not something Fiona could resist. She sat upright on her bed and made her way over to the large glass panes next to it. Her view from the dormitory was unlike any she had ever seen. There was the vast and wide grassy land that was lined by the sturdy trees of the Forbidden Forest and accompanied by the glistening waters of the Great Lake. An orange and yellow tint seemed to cover the entirety of the Hogwarts grounds.
Merely watching the sunrise from the window at the top of the Gryffindor tower was not enough to satisfy her. There were still a few hours until her first class of the day, Herbology, but yet, Fiona took it upon herself to get her school supplies for the day ready early and head down to the greenhouses. The air in the dorm was crisp and chilly, a short shudder shot down her spine, as she took off her warm and soft pajamas and put on her thin house robes. Even though Fiona could see her breath clearly in front of her face, she thought against bringing her winter coat down to Herbology. How cold could it possibly get? It's barely mid-September.
The castle had never seemed quieter. With every step, down the many flights of stairs, echoed and rang a loud noise throughout the open space. No one appeared to be awake, but Fiona, not any students or professors. The only sense of life was the birds chirping outside. When she reached the ground floor, she walked by the tall open doors of the Great Hall. Inside of the Great Hall, dozens of small knee height creatures, Fiona knew as house-elves were setting out plates and utensils for this morning's breakfast. Fiona never truly needed any food in the morning, so she had no guilt in missing it to get some time outside.
When she had reached the greenhouses, she set her bag against a wall and sat down next to it. She leaned her head against the wall carefully and took a deep breath. It had rained the previous night, making the grass wet and muddy, yet Fiona had always loved the smell after it rained. After sitting for a little bit, the blend of warm colors in the sky started to drift into a light blue.
From Fiona's left, she heard the sound of a girl's voice call out to her. "Hello!" She turned her head to see a Hufflepuff girl waving at her who appeared to be in her year, "didn't expect to find someone else here! You excited for Herbology, too? I couldn't sleep a wink. I gave up when the sun came up!" Fiona didn't recognize the girl but guessed that she was probably in her Herbology class. She got up and went to meet her classmate. "Yeah me too! the sunrise is beautiful today," they were now side by side, "hopefully today we should finally get to learn something in class." The two walked over to Fiona's original spot, and she offered for the Hufflepuff to sit down with her. "I honestly forgot that this was a mixed house class," Fiona laughed nervously, "Anyway, I'm Fiona, Fiona Williams," she said as she extended a hand, "what's your name?"

At Least the Plants are Warm
Upon mentioning the sunrise, Marilyn glanced up at the sky instintively though obviously it had already passed. She hadn't thought about looking at it in detail, just the colors that came through windows. By now there was only a few colorful streaks in the air. Marilyn admitted, "I didn't pay too much attention to it, but I'm sure you're right!"
The girl, who would introduce herself as Fiona, echoed Marilyn's own hopes for the class. Marilyn nodded, "Yeah, I'm tired of just sitting and listening to the Professor explain the rules. I'm ready to actually learn about plants!" As she spoke, she was expressive with her hands which showed off her enthusiasm and excitement more than just her words did. She finished with a wave of her hand, "I'm Marilyn Martinez! It's good to meet you, and at least since we're here we don't have to be out in the cold by ourselves!"
She hoped that talking to Fiona would make time fly by enough for the class to start before she got too impatient. She hated being impatient because she was so fidgety and felt so helpless to the passage of time. It made her want to travel forward in time, just a little, but that wasn't something she could do and it made it worse.
Marilyn tried not to think about it, instead going to sit against the edge of the greenhouse. She moved so she would sit on her outer robe, since she didn't mind getting that muddy. "I checked out some book from the Library, books I thought would be relevant to the class. Herbology's one of the classes I'm most looking forward to, so I've been wanting to do reading on my own time!" She looked through her book bag then paused. "Ah, forgot to bring it. Probably still on the shelf by my bed. Oh, well!"
She looked back at Fiona. "What about you, though? What class are you most excited to get started in?"

At Least the Plants are Warm
Fiona had sat down next to the Hufflepuff, who had now addressed herself as Marilyn. The girl asked about which classes she was excited to start. Defense against the dark arts and Charms were the classes that seemed to use her wand the most, but she probably knew the most about Herbology considering the amount of time she spent in the forest by her house. Although all of the subjects did pique her interest, what Fiona was passionate about wouldn't be offered until her third year at Hogwarts.
"Care of magical creatures, but I guess I have to wait a few years for that, Defense against the dark arts and Charms seems interesting though!" Ever since her older brothers entered their third year at Hogwarts, they would tell her all about their Care of magical creatures class. There was so much to learn about the creatures of the wizarding world. How could there be so many species, small and large, that she would have never even known existed if not from what she heard? They can heal, they can harm, they have abilities that even the strongest wizards couldn't brew in a potion or achieve with a spell.
She noticed that the sounds of the birds chirping had subsided and that the sky was full of white and voluptuous clouds. "I like nature and the outdoors a lot, so maybe I'll like Herbology!" she smiled at the thought of the plants that she would get to see in a few hours. Fiona turned around and peered through the wall of the clear greenhouse. There were a few rows of potted plants sitting around the edge of the long table in the center of the room. "What do you think's in there? I haven't gotten a chance to look at the syllabus yet, so I'm not sure what we're doing this year."
Fiona opened her bag and looked down at the brand new untouched Herbology book and realized how unprepared she was. Marilyn had already taken the liberties of getting extra books from the library, "When you finish that book, do you think I could borrow it? I should get more prepared for this year."
