Character Analysis: What Song Are You

Thanks to a question asked by someone in OOC chat, it had me thinking about some songs that could possibly fit my characters. Or at least embody their personality close enough. It was hard to think about some of the different songs for mine, so I'll list mine (with a link to the youtube video if you wanted to listen to it) and try to explain why I chose what I chose.

[Youtube] | Headlong (Queen) | Clark Baird
--> Why? Clark thrives on chaos and is as mischevious, theatrical and emotionally jagged as I have tried to make him to be. Headlong basically talks about spiraling out of control and doing things before you think. So thinking before you act. Taking initative whatever. He doesn't slow down to think. He is emotionally violatile and he spirals fast and out of control. He is dramatic for attention. He is self aware. He knows what he did. But he's doing it anyways.

--> Why? I didn't pick Stan because Vlad was obsessive or violent in the same way that Stan in the song is. I picked it because he feels things deeply. His emotions run so hot and so fast that it overwhelms him, drowns him. He loves hard. He grieves hard. He spirals hard. He lashes out when he can't regulate. He is not the type to go numb instantly, he's overwhelmed. He has abandonment trauma that he managed to keep bottled up but doesn't know how to process. His mother died suddenly and his father is loving but grieving. He moved countries. He clung to Koldovstoretz, not because of how great the school was, but because it was the connection that kept him in his mother's presence. He's also insecure and he will mask it with intensity. Stan has a uh.. emotional disregulation that Vlad's energy comes from, more from the fragile ego and fears and panic rather than the violence. Further.. he was also a good kid, but he does break under pressure. Stan was not an evil person in the song. He was hurting, unsupported and spiraling. Vlad is not the same, he's a boy who lost his mother, lost his home, lost his identity, lose his stability, and lost his 'colors' (if you noticed the profile change from vivid red and gold to black). He's breaking apart. He doesn't know how to hold himself together.

Last part on Stan and Vlad. Vlad has sort of taken a turn and had lashed out and what I feel connects the two is.. Stan starts off hopeful, becomes insecure, becomes unstable then destructive then loses himself. I chose Stan for the tragedy, not because of the danger.

--> Why? Honestly, there are many Eminem songs I could use but.. Lose Yourself isn't so much about confidence. It's also about fear and pressure. It's about someone who feels like everything is riding up on one moment and if he messes it up, he'll lose the last thing he has left. Vlad is terrified of losing more people, the way his mother was taken to him. He's a kid who feels like that he had an opportunity, one shot. He went to koldov and begged. He was determined, even if he was American. ("If I don't go, I lose her." = "You only get one shot, do not miss your chance") He's desperate. He's constantly fighting himself as well. Lose Yourself is also pretty much about an internal war, the side of you that wants to succeed and the side that wants to collapse. Vlad is sweet but volatile. He is hopeful but grieving. He is loving but insecure. He is bright but is breaking. He was beginning to feel like lashing out was a better option. He turned away from looking for the light in something and it created a pressure, panic in him. To him trying to claw his way back. He's not trying to be bad perse, but he's trying not to drown. If we consider both Stan and Lose Yourself as parts of Vlad, then Lose Yourself would have to be the part of him that has him fighting.

--> Why? Rasputin wasn't famous because he was good, but he was famous because he was infamous. So basically. Elmo became an infamous lil feller for all the wrong reasons. He tried to seduce two adult faculty members (Nancy and Sarai), cast the Crucio curse on Sarai's son. Got his hand and eye removed. Drinks constantly. .. Scams kids (why wouldn't he!).. had a run in while teaching History of Magic when the Deputy Headmistress walked in on him drunk and speaking the incantations to the unforgivables... He's basically a walking violation. The concept of Rasputin being used is because the stories told about Rasputin in the song are basically just exaggerated or made into more interesting stories by adding.. "facts". Rasputin was not a good guy in history or in the song. As a child, Elmo barely spoke and kept his emotions locked down and was hard to read. He was bullied into silence and learned to hide everything. People basically prjected all kinds of things onto Rasputin. When someone makes enough of a dominating presence to lead someone into viewing them a certain way, it can influence certain rumors. Elmo grew up with a loud, violent and humiliating childhood that was stock full of bullying and neglect. Rasputin also grew up in a harsh and chaotic environment too and became someone who was endured, adapted and that had learned to survive by being unpredictable. Elmo doesn't feel empathy, does not trust or connect or care or love in a way where he can be committed to one person. He doesn't care. He's numb. Like Rasputin, he was a deeply damaged man who was basically a symbol of corruption. Elmo also turns things into a scandal. He is a scandal magnet. Elmo inapproprately flirted with staff, used the torture spell on a student, drank, got fired, lost a hand and an eye, scammed kids (some of it is justified >.>)... he's basically the type of person to land on a tabloid with all of his scandals. Long story short. I did not choose Rasputin because of his appearance or power, but because of his actions.

--> Why? (I'm just gonna be short from this point on ;-; lots of words) I chose See You Again because Noah was abandoned at birth, seperated from his twin, adopted late and adopted again then lost his adoptive mother within a week and returned to the center and then got adopted again. His childhood is bascially.. I love you, please do not leave, oh you left.... See You Again is a song about missing someone, longing, the grief and connection and the ache of separation. He clings to his memories, holding onto the past because he can't be abandoned again. Noah went through this whole.. pattern in his life with his twin brother, Billy, and Billy basically served as Noah's anchor, the type of person that will tear Noah apart if he ever has to 'see him again', whether Billy dies or goes his separate ways. I chose it because Noah is soft and lonely and loving. But because he went through abandonment and rejection and still has one person by his side. The one that never left him.

--> Why? Hedeon was lonely. Humiliated. Fustrated. His childhood was greatly packed with rejection. Full of kids that didn't want him around. He didn't really get affection or validation or belonging. He got anger. Anger became his dominating language and the song is about someone who doesn't fit in, who doesn't feel understood and doesn't feel wanted. The person in the song uses violence and chaos as his outlet, and that is Hedeon. Hedeon's personality, in addition, is standoffish and tempramental and violent and impulsive and.. just name it. He doesn't know how nor want to talk about feelings or process disappointment or handle failure. So... he erupts! The big point is that he uses violence as a coping mechanism. He gets violent and bullies to get what he wants and lashes out when he feels stupid or cornered. He uses physical power and dominance to feel powerful. He is violent because it makes him feel in control.

--> Why? Edward is a good natured and empathatic boy who was loyal and protective even if not academically strong. He was emotionally honest and deeply attached to people. He feels everything even when he doesn't understand it. Hopeless War is about fighting battles you do not want to fight, losing the things that you care about and even trying to stay soft in a world that keeps hardening you. Edward tries his best and gets overwhelmed and hurt easily, but he keeps going anyways. Hopeless War is pretty much the fact that you're fighting because you care even when you are losing. He's a lover and not a fighter but life makes him fight. He only gets angry when things are unfair and is protective of his friends. He stands up for people even when he's scared and does not want conflict. Yet, he'll walk into the gunfire when someone he loves is hurting. He's fighting for kindness in a world that isn't so blessed or kind. When Clair and him broke it off, it broke him. But he hurt quietly. He wasn't as explosive as Hedeon or Clark was, as he is the type to cry alone and keep mementos and tries to remember the good times, even when it hurts. He's a gentle soul in a harsh environment as Koldovstoretz's quidditch is intense and violent and his peers and enemies are competitive. He is a sharp boy in a sharp world.

--> Why? But Edward's childhood heart is so hopeful and earnest and innocent.. trying to hold him together. He is the boy who wants to get through the hard parts of life without trying to be a hero or trying to be the best. He wants to just survive school, survive heartbreak and survive growing up. I've Gotta Make It To Summer is pretty much about pushing through, holding on, waiting for the good days and believing that htings will get better. He is a kid who thrives on the simple joys. (I'm american >.> I'm not saying football) Soccer, pizza, friends, warm weather, family cheering him on. He isn't that complicated, nor dark or cynical. He is a sunshine boy who gets bruised easily. He believes things will get better and believes that he's only going through a winter in his life, trying to make it to the summer, a bright and happier moment that isn't so miserable.

--> Why? Okay, if we haven't figured it out yet, I have a pattern. Abandonment, instability, death, moving countries, losing relatives, losing a mother, having fathers, having a bunch of brothers... he's terrified of being hurt again. The basic concept of why I chose bad guy is because Cody sees himself as someone who is like a class clown so the way he acts is childish with toddler-tier tantrums with him flailing his limbs around and all. The music in bad guy reminds me of him. Kind of carnivalish? In a way? I don't really want to go on and on about this one because I don't like Cody. But yes, that's pretty much the general concept.

--> Why? He hasn't had a roleplay so I'll keep this short. Buck has this song not because he's thinking that he's a different gender than he is biologically, but because he feels trapped between his two selves. I don't want to spoil buck too much yet, so I will give you that much.

--> Why? Sure, Footloose is about Ren coming in to a town where dancing is forbidden and off limits due to the reverend's son and his friends going to a party then driving off a bridge one night.. and about Ren trying to bring dancing back into the town because it's not 'sinful' as the pastor is preaching. But it is also about a kid who is restless and angry and reactive and impulsive and emoitonal and confrontational and is constantly moving because if he stops then he feels emotions that he does nto want to feel. Remy has anger issues, frustration and loneliness isn't exactly leaving him be either. He's confused and has grief that he doesn't understand. He feels a need to do something and since he cannot process emotions, he acts them out. He acts out and acts like a bully or a jerk. He causes trouble. He literally cannot stand still emotionally or physically. He's a storm in human form. He is not evil or cruel, he is volatile and he looks to start something. (funnily enough, I considered Colder By The Minute by the Frozen on Broadway cast as well) Again. I have plans for Remy, so I cannot continue with him at this moment but you can have this much!

--> Why? Burning House, as short as it is, is about regret and love that lingers with guilt that won't die with a person walking back into the ruins of his own life because he doesn't know how to let go. Octavius had an ex that left him, an ex that died, a child he couldn't raise, a marriage that fell apart, a son who cost him everything, a career that burned downa round him and a life that didn't go the way he imagined. He is a man that tries to do good and tries to be kind and stable but his past keeps collapsing behind him like a burning house. He returns to his ruins of his own life because he cannot move on.

He is haunted by Maria, Helena, Joseph, Clark and himself. He couldn't save him or himself. He keeps loving people who leave him, hurt him or fall apart in front of him. The song is about loving someone you can't help but watching everything fall apart anyways. He keeps walking back into the fire. He is too forgiving, too hopeful and way too willing to try again. He remarried, adopted more children, kept beliving in love, in family and believed that Clark would change and that he could fix things. He walks back into the same fire every time.

I had a dream about a burning house. You were stuck inside, I couldn't get you out...

He dreamed of the life he wanted but he's standing in the ashes of the life he got. Clark is the main problem in his life. Clark is practically making him go gray early, cost him money, cost him jobs, cost him peace and sleep and stability. Octavius is a man who loves his son so much it hurts him. He is the kind of person who will run into a burning building to save Clark, even if Clark lit the match. Even if Clark was trying to kill him.

He is a man who tries his hardest to be calm and gentle and patient and loving and soft spoken but he falls apart internally. He is a man who keeps choosing love when it hurt him. He tries to build a family, be a mentor, be a safe place, and tried to be the good man he never had growing up. He will keep choosing love even when love burns him. That's his life.

Octavius is also nostalgic. He clings to memories and people and to the idea of family and to the idea of being a good father and the idea of being loved. He tries to rebuild from the ashes of the ruins in his life. He can't walk away from what's already gone.
