I Feel Like I'm Dyeing...
Open to All3/26/26Rosalyn was so very out of her comfort zone. She was deciding, for the first time ever, to dye her hair. Not even five minutes into the process, she was lost. It was afternoon, and the weather outside was pretty cool, and she had no classes left in the day. Just to conquer the realm of light-pink box dye.
"Alright, let's figure this out." she said, looking at the back of the box for the instructions. She'd bought it over the Holidays secretly and brought it back to school because she knew her parents would not be fans of the idea.
The box told her to have dry, unwashed hair to start out. Check, she hadn't washed it since the previous afternoon. She had on an old shirt, black in colour, because she knew that things would probably get messy.
She only wanted to colour the tips, not the whole thing, so she took the brush and began to apply it. She'd never done it before, but thank goodness her hair was light enough already, because figuring out how to bleach her hair in the Hogwarts Girls Lavatory wasn't exactly something she wanted to do.
After she had it all brushed on, the box said to wait for...A WHOLE HOUR?!? Wow, they had very, very high hopes for her patience. She didn't have that much in her, but didn't want to be walking around with her hair like this. Oh, boy, she had to find some way to keep herself entertained. She didn't want to read a book because she was worried about the dye dripping onto the pages or something. She hoped that someone would come in soon, or she'd be bored out of her mind very quickly.

Miren was walking through the halls with no particular goal in mind. All of her classes were over for the day and spending her free time exploring the castle was something, she did more often than not in hopes of finding one of the many mysteries and secrets, that would be worth of her attention. There were plenty, without a doubt, one just had to observe properly.
Unfortunately for Miren, the only thing she came across was an argument between two other students. That alone was enough to remind her of the ones she'd endured at home and soon enough, unpleasant memories of her father started to flood her mind against her will. As if that alone wasn't enough, some of the feelings, anger in particular, resurfaced along with the unwanted recollection and Miren found herself getting irritated by literally everything. The sounds of footsteps, doors closing, voices of other students, any look sent her way – it all began to feel like too much. Stupid, stupid, stupid father! She was no stranger to this feeling and could tell it was coming immediatelly, but absolutely refused to lose her cool. Not here, not in front of anyone.
Miren swiftly entered the lavatory, the nearest place with at least some privacy, and closed the door behind her. She noticed some other girl but ignored her and headed straight to the sinks instead, turning the faucet and splashing her face with the ice cold water. With the water still running, her eyes found her reflection in the mirror. She observed the drops falling down her pale face for a while, letting the cold water cool her down at least a little bit. Keep her in the present.
Only then did Miren finally turn the faucet off and shot a cold glance towards the other girl. She sized her up and down with a critical eye, stopping at the pink ends of her hair. "Pink? Really?" Although she couldn't care less about other people's hair colour, a judgy comment was probably the only way to avert any attention from herself at the moment. Miren preferred to be viewed as insensitive and rude, rather than someone vulnerable.

I Feel Like I'm Dyeing...
@Miren Hawthorn3/26/26As Rosie was standing there, waiting for the stupid hour to be up so she could go do something that wasn't stand around the Lavatory, she saw another girl walk in. She looked to be about the same age as Rosalyn, and a bit stressed out.
She watched as the girl went to a sink, not the one Rosie was at, and put some water on her face. Rosie got the feeling, the need for some bit of cool and calm in a stressful time.
Rosie was just minding her own business, not about to ask what was wrong, as whoever the girl was looked like she didn't want to be talked to at the moment. Clearly, though, Rosie was wrong, because she made a snide comment about her hair, specifically the pink colour.
Wow. Literally 15 minutes into having the pink tips and she was already getting...insulted? Commented non-positively? Whatever it was, that wasn't very nice. The girl must have been feeling very stressed or mean or something of the sorts to feel like she had to say that when Rosie had done nothing but exist.
"Oh, yeah! It's my favorite colour. What about you?" she asked, trying to start up some sort of conversation that wasn't rude. Her parents had always taught her(well, when they were around) to be kind, even when others weren't, despite it being difficult sometimes.

Edited to add mention of Rosalyn! (i wrote this before i sent out the games night thread, sorry!)

Dido stepped into the bathroom, almost falling as she did from the sheer weight of her bag before dumping it, unceremoniously on the floor, and absent-mindedly rushing over to the nearest sink to begin scouring her hands- Had that mandrake pooed on her or was it just loose dirt? Dido decided that she didn’t really want to know and focussed on rinsing her hands with hot water while she scrubbed at it with soap.
When she had eventually washed her hands to her satisfaction, she began to walk over to the paper towels, still not really paying attention before she suddenly heard a voice ask, “Pink? Really?”.
Dido glanced up and around the lavatory, noticing two girls in the room as well: a hostile-looking Slytherin and another girl in black T-Shirt- Rosalyn! From the Games Night! Rosalyn was dyeing her hair and cheerfully responded about pink being her favourite colour. Dido dismissed her immediate urge to match the hostile girl’s tone of voice in order to fit in and instead grinned, turning to the girl and loudly saying, “It looks great, by the way,” she then turned to the first girl, smiling slightly too sweetly and saying, “Doesn’t it?” in a controlled and even tone.
Dido twisted again to face the hair dyer and quickly rattled out that, “I heard last week a 2nd Year was offering to dye people’s hair with the spell ‘Crinus Muto’ but apparently she hadn’t actually learnt it and instead used a spell which only worked on objects. A bunch of people ended up with gingery bleached hair by the end of the day!” she looked at the girl’s box-dye appraisingly, “So good on you for doing it yourself, the old-fashioned way”.

Miren's place of choice turned out not to be so private after all, as another girl around their age joined them in the Lavatory soon. Fortunately, the newcomer did seem to have her own problems to deal with at the moment and was hopefully safe to ignore without having to deal with any unwanted questions. That, however, could not be said about her blond-haired company, which was exactly why Miren let out that snide comment about the girl's new hair colour.
Miren's attempt at averting the attention from herself seemed to work, because she was met with a short explanation and a question in return. "Black," she replied sharply with the same cold look on her face, before adding a lot quieter and much less certain: "...I think." No matter how certain she always seemed to be in everything else, something as simple as figuring out her favourite colour proved to be surprisingly confusing for her.
Fortunately, she didn't have to spiral into that now, as the other girl spoke up and joined the... Conversation, if it could be called that. Miren, having absolutely no desire to appear friendly or, at the very least, polite, raised an eyebrow at the girl's overly sweet tone with a dry response: "It looks like dyed hair." In her eyes, that was it. There was nothing special about it, right?
The sceptical expression remained on Miren's face even as she listened to the brown-haired girl's story. "Did the 2nd Year get payed?" She asked with an unimpressed tone, crossing her arms and leaning back against the sink behind her before adding a judgy: "If they didn't ask for anything, must've been a real idiot." In Miren's eyes, it was either a well done fraud, or an absolutely foolish attempt of the 2nd Year to try and prove themself.

@Miren Hawthorn@Dido Bleaklane3/26/26"Black. That's cool!" Rosie said, not really sure what else to add to the partial-conversation that was going on. She didn't know what was up with this girl, but decided not to really push it.
"Oh, thank you so much, Dido! Nice to see you again, the game night was so much fun! And wow, that doesn't sound very good. I'm glad I'm just using the box, then!" she said, looking over at the girl who'd joined the conversation. She knew her from the game night a few months ago in the Slytherin Common Room, and knew that she was definitely much nicer than whoever this other girl was. Rosie was pretty sure that she'd seen Little Miss Meanie around, but she couldn't place exactly where. Perhaps class, or the Common Room?
She decided to ignore the snide remark from the girl again, about it looking like dyed hair. She didn't feel like dealing with all of that negative energy when she was doing something cool, dyeing her hair for the first time.
She, however, couldn't stop herself after a few minutes had passed. She decided to ask the girl what her name was, so she could at least put a name to the face.
"What's your name? I'm Rosalyn, by the way." she said, because this girl hadn't yet earned the nickname privileges that she extended to almost everyone else.ReducioHi Dido! Of course you can join, it's an open thread, meaning everyone is welcome! And I'm making our characters know each other from your game night, which would have occurred before this if it was the first day back from the holidays and this is in March!

Rosalyn thanked Dido and Dido smiled in response, feeling proud of herself for some reason, before turning back to the other girl with an almost triumphant smirk. But it quickly faded when the girl spoke, apparently still focused on Dido’s story.
“Did the 2nd Year get payed? If they didn't ask for anything, must've been a real idiot.”
Dido started, “Wha- Oh. Sorry yes. I… don’t actually know. I assume yes because otherwise why lie? I mean- Well, maybe she didn’t ask for money to avoid getting into more trouble, but then she could’ve essentially guilt-tripped kids into paying. Or what if-“ Dido paused, somewhat surprised at herself for theorising so pragmatically, “Who knows? Anway.”
She looked back at the girl, about to apologise for rambling on, but she paused when she finally looked at the girl carefully. Something was… off about her. The girl seemed different to the couple of times Dido had seen her before, when she had radiated an unaffected confidence and general look of derision. As she caught her eye, Dido looked down, slightly sheepishly, before resuming washing her hands, mainly just to give herself something to do.
Eventually, to Dido's relief, Rosalyn filled the gap, asking the other girl, “What's your name? I'm Rosalyn, by the way.”
Unable to stop herself, Dido glanced back up and quickly added, “You’re in Slytherin too, right? Meera or something?”

Miren couldn't care less about the blonde girl's opinion about her choice of favourite colour. Her reaction didn't please, but, to be fair, it didn't offend her either. She was left unaffected, just like in most cases. That being said, even the girls' conversation didn't change her stance. Some people might've felt at disadvatange in the company of people who knew each other, but not Miren. This was far from anything she would let intimidate her. She decided not to let others define her feelings long ago. Instead, she listened for any information that might come in handy one day, though the only one worthy of noting was the name of one of them. Dido. The very girl who just turned to Miren with an almost triumphant smirk, earning nothing but an unimpressed raised eyebrow from her.
Once Dido started explaining and speculating about the 2nd Year's plan, Miren didn't take her piercing gaze off of her. "Well, money isn't the only reason people lie, Dido. Though it is always a good cover-up for their real intentions," Miren stated. And it's always a good bonus, even if not the real aim. Miren still sounded rather cold and distant, but not so much this time. Perhaps she "took pity" on Dido, seeing her as someone too naive for this world, or perhaps it was just another slip-up of her own reserved front. Whatever it was, she hoped neither of the two noticed.
A while of silence passed by before the blonde broke it, introducing herself as Rosalyn, to which Dido added her own observation. Close enough, she thought before correcting her with the usual stoicism: "Miren." Then she frowned in a slight confusion. "Wouldn't take you for a Slytherin," Miren stated, looking Dido up and down sceptically. That sure surprised her. Well, one meaningless plus for you, I guess, she thought before turning to Rosalyn. "And your House?"

I Feel Like I'm Dyeing...
@Miren Hawthorn3/26/26Rosie was only half listening to the conversation between Dido and the other girl, because a strand of her hair had gotten into her eye. That happened quite often, but it was not welcome, what with the dye in it and all. She was frantically getting the hair out of her eye, before rinsing her eye out just to be on the safe side.
She did, however, look back over when she heard the other girl, who'd just introduced herself as Miren, make another snide comment about Dido not looking like a real Slytherin.
"I'm a Slytherin too. I guess they just come in all different appearances, right?" she asked, not wanting to be rude back but to prove that not all people in Slytherin have to look/be a certain way in order to be part of the house.
She really didn't understand the problem that some people had with there being Slytherins that didn't fit their exact molds. It wasn't her fault that she was a Muggle-Born, or that she didn't have some dark ambition like some others. She'd been sorted into the house still, and she was proud of that, regardless of others who thought differently about the matter as a whole.

Almost imperceptibly, Dido stiffened when the girl, Miren, corrected the almost-name that Dido had supplied. Inwardly, she cursed herself for speaking, wishing that she had been right, even just this once, so she could make a better impression on both girls. As she wondered, Dido began to grow angry, immensely surprising herself. “Would it really have been so hard for Miren to just nod along?” she wondered, droplets of disdain slipping out of her, through her eyes, her breath, even her very skin could have been secreting hatred.
That was wrong. Dido knew that that was wrong. So she grinned, cheerfully, even vapidly, and, amidst all this introspection, Dido completely missed the slight falter in Miren’s tone.
Dido’s grin was bolstered by Miren’s, presumably mean-intentioned, comment, “Wouldn’t take you for a Slytherin.”
"Little does she know how right she is", Dido thought to herself, smiling both on the inside and on the outside. And in response, Dido said nothing, instead turning to Rosalyn to hide the glow of pride from Miren. Rosalyn, however, did not appear to notice this happiness and quickly retorted, “I'm a Slytherin too. I guess they just come in all different appearances, right?”.
Dido knew that as well. Before Miren. She was doing very well that day. But she caught herself before letting the unnecessarily victorious look appear on her face. It would have been wrong too, and Dido wasn’t like that. She also opened her mouth to add something along the lines of, “Who would want to be taken for a Slytherin anyway?” but, thankfully, like the expression, she managed to stop herself from saying that. Rosie was a Slytherin too. And, no matter how unease Dido felt in the house, she couldn’t fault the sweet girl who had been so kind to her.
The thoughts were blissfully silenced by Dido herself breaking the tension and eventually asking, “What lessons did you guys have? Earlier today- I had Herbology… Mandrakes. I’ve still got a headache from that, actually.”
