Midday Munchies

It was lunch time on the weekend. Students were littering in and out of the Great Hall, some finishing their meals and others just starting. The chatter filled the large space, giving it aura of happy chaos that seemed common for Hogwarts. The Hall was a little over a half full with there being open seats at every table.

While some were chatting Wes was sitting alone staring at a potions book and he had been flipping through the same set of pages for the last ten minutes or so. The boy’s hair was ruffled a bit, he had done this himself, and he was looking a tad bit tired of studying for this subject. He even muttered, “But I do exactly that and it doesn’t… ugh…” before he crossed out another line that was etched in his parchment.

Wes had also looked to have made a bit of a mess of himself. Not that he had even noticed. His lunch had been pretty simple. On the table was the half eaten ham sandwich and a pumpkin pasty. Some of each was Wes’ robes. On his collar was a splotch of mustard from the sandwich and his robe had a bit of pumpkin where he had placed his right arm down onto the plate without noticing it. His mind was elsewhere and it was definitely not focused on his surroundings.

🄰fter being busy with her own study, roaming around the lake since morning, just to find a couple of useless seaweeds. She had to go back to her dorm, change her dirty clothes, and be late for her lunch again. Could today be any worse? Her face was all frustrated from hunger and disappointment. It seemed like her endeavor to find Gillyweed was a waste, and all she had in return was nothing. Should she keep trying or come up with a new plan? She might have to break some rules at this point, but is it worth it?

Anyway, a young Slytherin girl arrived at the Great Hall finally. She glanced around to find somewhere to sit. Two gray eyes caught up with a messy blond hair and a messy shirt. What happened to him? Skylar realized that someone must have had a worse day than her. She headed straight to approach him immediately, grabbed a goblet of pumpkin juice, and drank it all up, then she took a seat.

“Afternoon.” She said in a hurry, grabbed some bread and cheese, and bite them. “What are you muttering about alone here? Erk..kk..” She ate too fast, and something stuck in her throat.

When hearing someone speak to him, it took a second to realize who it was before he turned his head to see his Slytherin friend. He gave her a smile and then turned back to his Potions book. “Well I’m just looking at the alternate ingredients for a…” however Wes stopped abruptly noticing her coughing fit and slid her his cup of juice. “Here, here.”

Hopefully that would solve the problem. Wes smirked at her and sighed. “Please don’t die here. It would be a bad look for the Gryffindors if a Slytherin girl died at our table.”

Wes then turned on the bench to face her fully, chuckling lightly. He now noticed his robes arm was covered in spiced pumpkin and he exhaled and rolled his eyes at himself. For a second he considered a spell he had read, but decided against it. Dirty robes were better than torn robes, or burnt robes, if the spell was done incorrectly.

Now realizing he looked so messy, Wes looked embarrassed and tried to cover it up as he looked back to Skylar. It was not exactly successful and his eyebrows turned as red as the redness on his cheeks. “So… Skye… what have you been up to?”

🆂kylar quickly grabbed his cup and drank it all in one shot. She then sighed with relief. Before her mouth even began to open and say ‘Thanks’. The boy had already said something to annoy her. “Ugh, stop it.” Said she, slightly pouting, narrowing her eyes. “I’m just hungry, and no one would accuse you anyway, looking like that.” She gazed at his messy shirt even though he tried to hide it, but Skylar already noticed since she walked to the table.

“I guess you had a worse day than mine.” She bent her head and bit her bread and cheese once more. “I was trying to find some Gillyweed to study it on my own for weeks now. I know they grow in a deep lake, but I just hope that I will have one lucky day when it floats on the surface, and I can see it.” She said while chewing, and her lips were stained with cheese. “I guess that day will never come.” She sighed with disappointment before she swallowed her food. Turning her face to the boy again, she looked at his book. “Enough about me. What’s your deal with that book? Something went wrong in Potion?” She furrowed one eyebrow and gazed at him with a curious look.

Wes arched an eyebrow at her when Skylar showed a pouting face. He did not understand. Did he say something that really offended her or anything like that, at least that is what he wondered. So the boy tilted his head some and said, with a grin, “I was only joking, Skylar. Just messing around.”

He offered her a smile, looking into her eyes for a long moment before deliberately changing just one of them to look just hers. It was hopefully a funny sight. To him it was anyway.

Wes had hoped that would squash whatever type of misstep he had made. Then she spoke of something, gillyweed. He had no earthly idea of what that could be. “Is that… something like seaweed?” Wes asked pushing the plate of food away from himself, “or is it some special plant, I’m guessing?”

The look of interest at that faded when she mentioned the potions text book he had his nose buried in earlier. “Well nothing is actually wrong. I’m just trying to find the alternate ingredients for the antidote of common poisons. I’ve had no luck yet in finding any source. Some type of mint maybe?” At saying that he shrugged his shoulders and closed the book. “Ah whatever, who even knows?”

🅴ven her mouth was smeared with cheese, her face still pouting. Skylar knew the boy was only teasing her, but the young girl was unstable and easily upset when she was hungry. Wes surely picked a bad time to annoy her. Yet, when he honestly explained that he was just joking, he even offered a smile. Her frustration was gone quickly. It surprised her a bit that she got annoyed with him a lot of the time, but somehow never really mad at him for messing with her.

Before she was going to say something, Wes already looked at her in the eyes for a moment. She suddenly became nervous and immediately avoided his face. “Okay, okay. I’m just hungry, alright?” When he asked about the Gillyweed, she arched her brow. “Don’t tell me you forgot about Professor Iris' class. We learned about it in lesson three, if I remember it right.” She put down her food and rubbed the bread crumbs of her hands. “It’s actually an aquatic plant, but not like seaweed. If you eat it, you can breathe underwater for some time. Too bad I never found and tested it on my own.” She looked disappointed again.

After she asked about his book, the boy mentioned mint. Her mood totally changed, as she had already forgotten about the Gillyweed thing. “What? mint? Why didn’t you ask me sooner? I brought its sprout from home, and plant it since we arriving here. Would you like some for your potion?” She offered with wide eyes. Then, she paused a bit. Her memory was good indeed, and she realized something. “Wait… Did we actually use mint in the Antidote to Common Poisons?”

The first thing Wes had noticed when after he attempted to shift his eyes to look like Skylar’s, was that it made her avoid eye contact with him. He was getting better at it, it being the small bit of control the young Metamorphagus was learning for his abilities. So he returned his face to normal, the copied gray eyes of Skylar shifting back to Wes’ true hazel eyes.

Regardless, he still spoke to her with a playful tone and said, “Ah, you’re just hangry, hmm?” Wes chuckled lightly at this before hearing the mention of a potions lesson. He did not remember that lesson, it had been earlier in the year and it was out of his mind now. “Oh… we did? Honestly I can’t remember. Guess I’ll never need it though, when will I need to breathe underwater?”

As for the potion he was discussing, Wes shrugged again. But he did notice her interest and change of demeanor when discussing topic. “Nothing in the class, no. At least I don’t remember it being said in class. It was in something else I read, I think. A possible alternate ingredient or something.” Wes had opened the book again, but decided to close it before shrugging once more. “Honestly I probably should just be worrying about the primary ingredients, I think. I More likely to be on our exams. I know you like plants, but I didn’t know you were a potions girl.”

🆂kylar was always curious about nature, especially when she saw something extraordinary or different from what she had learnt. She quietly observed Wes for some time after she saw his hair had changed in that holiday hidden room, yet never asked about it.

She heard about Metamorphagus when she was five. Aunt Amelia always told that they were funny, but all her thought was curious. How can someone transform their appearance without a spell? Plus, everyone knew how hard the Tranfiguration was, even though she succeeded with a good grade. It was still considered the most complex class of all.

All she could do was avoid his eyes and keep the question in her chest. Is it harritage? Will it offend him if she asks? Was it sentimental to him? Should she start with the blood race topic? No… That was more rude to begin with. There was a lot on her mind while she was talking about another topic with him. Thankfully, he mentioned something she admired. She chuckled that he was surprised by how much the potion interested her.

“Don’t you think plants are always related to the potion? How many of them have herbs as ingredients?” She gave him a small, genuine smile. “It’s true that I came from a long line of Herbologists, and my house is full of plants and herbs. But, remember…” Her pointy finger rose up near her head with a smirky, proud face. “Some of them were researchers, too. Each room of my indoor gardens must have at least one potion room or brewing station on standby. And, that is how I always play with my plants when I’m alone.” She laughed softly before looking at him.

Wes did think it was odd. Odd that she was not meeting his eyes for another time. What was it, he thought, and he was just about to press her about it but decided not to do so.

Instead he tilted his head when she chuckled. He did not exactly love potions, nor did he particularly enjoy herbology. Some people had to though, and Wes knew Skylar was one of those some that did.

He was also about to answer her question about herbs and potions, but when she mentioned her plural indoor gardens his eyes widened at her. “Indoor gardens, like a lot of them. How large is your home, Skylar? Is your family that wealthy?” Wes came from a decently wealthy family too, but not anything where they owned a large estate.

“I didn’t know I was friends with a rich girl.” Wes chuckled at this, smiling at her and offering a little wink so she would definitely know he was kidding. Well not about he being rich, but that the teasing was just friendly joking. “So all your family love plants too? Is that how they’ve all made the family fortune and what not?” He was also joking here, but he also wanted to know if herbology was really that lucrative.

🅻ooking at how the boy was curious, Skylar laughed softly. Even though the family topic was a bit sentimental to her, the young girl was still open about it anyway. Because her judgment had already decided that Wes did not ask with bad intentions, she answered genuinely. “I don’t think my house is that big, but enough for a big family, yes.” She giggled hard before she continued. “It’s more like there are many doors around the house. You just easily confused which one is to the garden, and which one is to your bedroom.” Her eyes lit up when she thought of an idea. “Maybe I could invite you to come visit my house sometime, maybe during next year's holiday.” Her smile was big enough to show how happy she would be, considering how lonely she was if she went back home.

When Wes reffered her as a rich girl, she was not offended by his question at all. “Well, I’ll take that as a compliment.” She rolled her eyes when he gave a little wink, but also raised a tug of her lips. “As far as I know, every member of my family grew up with plants, so I think they must love them, surely. Being a part of nature, and learning about it when you're young, how can you not loving what you’ve grown up with. Right?” She gazed at the boy with one arched brow, then turned back to her plate. “And, I already told you that my parents work for the Ministry, also certainly my grandparents did too. So, that would make us some fortune, I think.”

Skylar whipped her oily lips before grabbing a drink. “I don’t know. I don’t personally care much about money, not because I don’t see its worth, but I think I'm already surrounded by nature.” Swallow the pumpkin juice as she paused. “What more would I want?” She turned back to Wes again. Her eyes widen. “Oh, and I have Baxter to cook for me. He is my house elf. The best housekeeper of Astor!” She proudly grinned.
