✽Young love. Avery didn’t really know what she had been missing out on until she had experienced it herself the day before. The day before she had done probably one of the biggest things in her life so far. She had admitted her feelings to the boy she deeply cared about ever since she met him. Mikey. Avery laid in the grass. It was the day before the ball. The day before she would get to dance the night away with her new boyfriend. Boyfriend. Avery was still caught up on that word and the fact she had someone to call that.
Avery didn’t have a care in the world. For all she knew the world could be ending around her and she wouldn’t even know it. All she could replay was the day before. The day that she had officially become a girlfriend. Her heart taken by someone. Leaving her finally claimed by at least someone.
She has never expected it when she’d met Mikey. At first glance, she thought that he’d never feel anything more than friends towards her. She had honestly thought the same at first. That was until the day he had saved her. The day when she’d experienced her first asthma attack and he had stayed there with her. Calmed her as she struggled to breathe. Then he’d taken her to the hospital wing to get treated, though she wasn’t actually treated. Avery still could feel the effects on occasion, but nothing as bad as that one day.
Avery closed her eyes for a moment. Relishing in the beauty of the cool morning as she lay there. The sun casting pink, purple, and gold hues across the sky. Avery sighed. Glad that she’d woken early enough to enjoy it.
Then she heard someone walking across the grounds. The soft crunching of grass reminding her where she was. Avery stood up quickly, then relaxed. There was another girl. Avery thought she was a second year like herself, but she couldn’t quite place her name.
That’s why Avery decided to approach her. Why not say hello on such a fine day? “Hello. Doesn’t the day seem very bright and sunny today?” Avery asked with a smile. Shocked at how different she sounded. ✽

✽“Nice to meet you, Amelia. I’m Avery.” Avery grinned in the girl’s direction. Was it just her or was the day becoming brighter? Clearer? Happier than normal? Probably just her. Though it did seem a touch warmer. A good sign considering she couldn’t wait to spend the rest of her day soaking in the sun and enjoying life as it was. She was finally happy for the first time in ages.
Avery loved the sunrise that morning. It was beautiful as colors streaked across the sky as if they had been painted. It was surreal and Avery couldn’t believe it wasn’t a painting. How could something so beautiful be so real? With everything bad in Avery’s life. She was happy to find a light in the dark. A window to let the light in.
“It really is beautiful. I try to come out here this early as much as I can just to watch this. Though this morning seems to be extra vibrant.” Avery smiled in Amelia’s direction.
Avery was snapped out of her daydream when Amelia commented about how happy Avery seemed. She was embarrassed for a moment. She guessed that her love struck self was obvious enough for everyone to notice. Well, better out than in with the truth then!
“Happy? Oh yes! I had the most splendid day yesterday! Yesterday, I finally became a girlfriend to you wouldn’t guess who! Mikey Forville.” Avery smiled and sighed slightly. Happy that she could now say she was taken, but also surprised still at saying the word ‘girlfriend’ when referring to herself. It was surreal!
Avery wondered if the girl knew Mikey. He seemed to know many people, so maybe they had met at some point? Well, Avery would just have to wait and find out! She did have all day to enjoy! ✽

✽At first Avery didn't notice the cold frown thrown in her direction. She was too distracted. Too happy for her own good. If she wasn't careful, well, things would escalate quickly. Too quickly for her to keep up with her mind already running in circles and replaying the day before. It was the sharp, sarcastic tone in Amelia's voice that got her. Snapping her from her daydream and into the real world.
She was shocked to see the look upon Amelia's face. It was dark. Cold. Like a dark night with a large storm brewing. Avery would have to tread carefully. Though one thing baffled her. Why had Amelia's mood changed so quickly. The girl's mood was a stark contrast to the happy girl she had met only moments before. Something was wrong, and Avery had to know what.
"What's wrong? Did I say something wrong?" Avery frowned and looked at the ground. Confusion spreading across her insides. It overpowered even the joy and happiness that she felt. She had said something wrong. She knew it, but what exactly had caused Amelia to change her attitude? Was it because of her and Mikey? Or was it something deeper that Avery couldn't see or hear in the girl's voice? Either way, Avery had the feeling she would find out soon.
Avery didn't want to cause conflict with the girl. She seemed like such a nice and friendly person that Avery didn't want to hurt her by saying something she regretted. That was always how people grew apart when they were meant to be together and be friends. She had seen it way too many times herself. Especially in her own family. One argument over something that led to a disaster. Years of not speaking to each other and broken hearts looming in the dark. She shivered internally. Why did life have to be so complex and complicated?
Avery did not know the answer to her own question, but she did know one thing. No matter what happened even if it was something good, a counter would always be there to attack. Though Avery didn't feel like Amelia was trying to attack. No. Avery felt that she misunderstood the girl and her intentions. That was why she wasn't backing down. She had to know if the girl was okay before she decided on her next move. Even if that next move meant backing off and walking away defeated. If it saved their possible friendship, then Avery would do it. Though she desperately hoped that this wouldn't come down to that. She was one to solve problems. Not cause more. ✽

✽Avery closed her mouth. She didn't know what to say. Were there even words to express how she was feeling in that moment? Avery felt as if she had done something wrong. Maybe she had made a mistake. A mistake that was irreversible. What was she going to do now?
"I'm so sorry. I had no idea. I wouldn't have even asked him if I knew that you liked him in that way." Avery spoke softly. Her voice was barely audible. She didn't even know if Amelia could hear her.
Silence stretched between them. A silence that pained Avery. What else was there to do but wait? If the girl wanted to not speak to her again, Avery would respect that. If she did want to talk, well, Avery would listen. She owed the girl that much and so much more. Avery was the one who had uprooted the girl, and Avery had nothing left to do.
"If you want me to go, I respect that, but I'll stay and listen if you want me to." Avery smiled gently. She hoped the girl could hear the sincerity in her voice.
The breeze blew silently. Echoing the tension in the air that could have been cut with a knife. Avery flexed her fingers. An attempt to shake off the feeling of dread creeping into her. As the silence stretched on she had the feeling this meeting was going to end badly. Worse than she had first expected. ✽
