The Flying Mailman
Owls. How could such small creatures with wide, round eyes and silent wings know precisely where to go to deliver their letters? How could people put so much trust in them? How could certain owls completely change their sleep schedules just to deliver messages between wizards? These thoughts rushed through Anirudh's mind as he walked out of the castle and set his sights on an old-looking tower. Its stone walls were filled with windows, each one lined with owls of all sizes—some snowy white, others mottled brown and gold. He remembered seeing one of these owls a week ago, when it swooped in with his Hogwarts letter, its feathers ruffled and eyes glinting. Now, reaching the small tower, he opened a wooden door and entered. There were dead rats on the floor, nests littering the windows, and, of course, the owls. Anirudh glanced around, searching for the best owl. At last, he noticed a large, strong tawny owl perched in one of the highest windows, its sharp talons gripping the sill. He took a letter from his pocket and strapped it onto the owl. The letter read...
Dear Mother and Father,
My first day at Hogwarts was one of the best days of my life! Although I haven't started my lessons yet, I have already learned many new things. The magical world is filled with so many intriguing things, and believe it or not, I haven't been able to figure out how any of them work. By the way, I was sorted into Ravenclaw! (And just so you know, Mum, Ravenclaw is the Hogwarts house for the sharpest students at school.) Father, I know that everyone in our family has been in Gryffindor, but I think Ravenclaw is the right house for me. There were countless things that made my first day amazing, but the most enjoyable thing was the friend I met. Remember the boy from Flourish and Blotts, father. Well, we met on the Hogwarts Express, and we quickly became best friends. We were even sorted into the same house! I hope things are going well at home, because they are sure going well over here.
Love,
Anirudh
