Beyond My House
Cress yawned. She had just woken up, maybe a bit too late, but whatever, it was Saturday anyway. She didn't know what her friends were doing, almost all of them weren't even in the dorm room anymore when she'd woken up. Stumbling out of bed, throwing on her clothes and glasses, she quickly brushed and styled her hair and made it down to the Great Hall for breakfast. On the way out, she picked up a few textbooks and some notebook paper. She may as well get this homework done while at breakfast since there really wasn't anything she needed to do anyway.
The Great Hall wasn't all that crowded when she got there because most of the people had either come in already and eaten or were sleeping in later. Also, the houses weren't really sticking to their tables either. She spotted two Ravenclaws and a Slytherin at her table, plus a few Hufflepuffs scattered around at others.
Making her way to the Hufflepuff table since she didn't see any of her friends and didn't really have any in other houses, she sat down at the end where there were barely any people. Cress plopped her textbooks and notebook next to her plate. While she was eating her breakfast, she noticed a Gryffindor boy walk into the room. 'He must have slept in too,' she thought, going back to eating breakfast. Toast with jelly was for breakfast. An owl came and dropped a letter on the table. She put it in her jean pocket, thinking she'd read it later after eating and finishing this homework.

Beyond My House
The weekend’s a peculiar thing, he thinks. A couple of days that’s supposed to be for rest, but you usually spend it doing the exact same thing you would have been doing on a weekday. In his case, it would be spent catching up on any homework that was set for the next week.
For now, the weekend was welcomed with open arms.
He had nothing of significance to do, so he snoozed his alarm clock a couple of times, haphazardly brushed his teeth and made his way to the Great Hall for a delayed breakfast.
Usually, the Great Hall was far more organised than it was this morning. Students would often sit in their respective colours, until from afar there was a pleasant sight of perfect rows of crimson, azure, viridian and gold.
He supposed that the weekend brought a certain chaos with it, and the Great Hall wasn’t going to be an exception. Students just sat wherever they pleased, and he felt obliged to do the same. He didn’t spend long scouring,
“Nice glasses,” always make sure you open with a compliment and a smile, first impressions are important, “you mind if I sit here?” The question is followed by a nonchalant point of his index at the seat in question.
“Oh, where are my manners?” he asks himself. He uses a thumb to prod his own chest for reference, “Frank. Pleasure to meet you.”

Cress was sitting at the table, shoving a mouthful of toast in her mouth while staring at her Potions textbook. She had a test coming up and wanted to ensure she had the potions memorized so she could accurately make each one. She desperately wanted (and needed) that Outstanding grade.
As she moved onto the second potion, repeating the steps in her head until she had them memorized, a boy walked up to her table. Asking if he could sit there, he `sat down once Cress smiled at him and said, "Sure, by all means take a seat. I'm just going over some potions homework. I've got a test coming up." Cress did enjoy the company of having somewhere else there. "I totally don't mind having your company though. My friends are off doing whatever, so I'm just enjoying breakfast by myself today," she laughed in no way upset by this.
The boy introduced himself. "Well it's wonderful to meet you Frank! I'm Cress. Just call me that, it's my nick. First name Crescent but there's really no need to know that," she laughed again. "Anyhoo, how're your classes going? Got any test or whatnot coming up in a bit?" Cress asked taking another bite of her toast.

Looking at the textbook only further reminded him that he had nothing to do today. And with that in mind, he eased into the seat and immediately helped himself to some toast. If he were honest, the Wizarding World cookbook was better left off the shelf. He’d much rather just be given some bread and a toaster. The toast here just tasted… off.
“Ouch, Professor Price is rough,” he says, butter knife scraping across the toast, points it at the textbook for reference, “that’ll be me in a couple of days.” He’s looking down at his toast, carefully spreading as much of the butter as he can, “You have to return the favour, you know.” A sheepish grin, eyes looking up from his breakfast, he says, “Keep me company, I mean. His tests are hard. I’ll be needing the support.” A friend indeed is a friend in need, right? Something like that.
She was excitable, like a puppy. It was infectious to say the least.
“Cress, like the things we put in sandwiches in primary school? Is that short for something?” he asks, reminded of the green stuff they’d grow in vials, and eat them in sandwiches the next day. It was something to do with biology. He couldn’t remember. Another victim that fell to the Wizarding World takeover. He was remembering less and less of the Muggle world. Soon, he’d remember nothing. Perhaps that was the intention.
“Classes are good. Charms’ my favourite, I think. You got a favourite?”

Cress liked the way this kid talked. He seemed to have a lot of humor hidden in his expressions. The way he shoveled down the toast while she simply took little bites had a certain effect on her. She had cousins, of course, a few of them were boys, and some had eaten this way, but after being away from them for so long, she'd kind of become used to eating more... classy if that was the right word for it. However, she did find it funny like being pushed back in time to those quick afternoon meals outside with her cousins where nobody bothered to eat nicely and ended up a mess.
She smiled at Frank while he complained about Professor Price. "You know, I've had a lot of difficult teachers, and I think by now the best way to deal with them is to simply pretend as though you look up to them. They do like that, it makes them feel important and more friendly towards you. I used to do that a lot in school because there was this one teacher who just seemed to have it out for kids with the amount of homework they gave and the strict rules they set. Anyway, I can help with giving support," she laughed. "It's always nice to know you're not the only person struggling with something and, you know, I haven't taken one of his tests yet but I've heard the same."
Cress glanced back at her textbook feeling a bit overwhelmed like she knew she'd have to put a lot of work into this class and put off a lot of other things she wanted to do. "I don't know, I'm pretty outdoorsy, so maybe I should try studying outside rather than in. It could help me to focus a bit more. Sometimes being held up inside makes me distracted by everything going on and fresh air does help the brain... I think?" she got a questioning expression on her face like she'd heard people say this before but had never seen the science and proof to back it up.
Cress shrugged, going back to the conversation. Oh dear, not this question, she thought when Frank asked her about her name. "My parents named me after the moon. My dad's last name was Moon and then obviously it was mine and so my parents thought it'd be funny I guess to name me Crescent to match my last name. I wish they hadn't because it takes a lot of explaining, but I guess it's fine in the end. I do like the name Crescent, just maybe Moon isn't the best last name, you know?" she sort of laughed awkwardly at this. "But no, I wasn't named after any leafy vegetable you put in your sandwiches," she had to think for a while about what that vegetable could be but couldn't think up anything.
They sat there for a second in silence until Frank asked about classes. "You know, as much as I hate the time of the class, I must say I do like Astronomy. The professor's a tough grader, but the class in general I like. The irony with my name, I know," she giggled, not altogether upset at making a joke about herself.
