This whole thing was stupid. Ophelia knew it was stupid, but she didn't want to give in. That was a stupid move, too!

Max just knew how to push her buttons so much that he made her agree to go to the abandoned toilets. At night, not to mention. Ophelia was glad she'd dared him to go there as well, but she didn't know how they both ended up doing it together.

Great, just great. At least they couldn't find anything to argue about this time. Right...? Ophelia and Max were standing in front of the entrance to the abandoned toilets. It was around 7 PM, and they had to stay there for a good hour to prove to each other that they weren't scaredy cats.

It was already dark outside, though, and Ophelia wasn't very fond of staying out at night; at least she wasn't alone. Frowning, she realized how thankful she was for having dared Max to join her. She secretly hoped he'd start yapping about anything, because she was already feeling nervous and shivery even though they hadn't entered the abandoned toilets yet.

Taking a step back, Ophelia softly shoved Max's shoulders to the front. "You go first," she said, not wanting to admit in a hundred years that she was scared. Only one hour; they could do it. Yeah, they could. Only one hour...

Max skipped as he went down the hallway. He couldn’t really remember why this had come to be. He and Ophelia had dared each other, that he remembered. She was scared of the dark, and he did not really fancy tight spaces. Why they chose to do it in the abandoned toilets of all places, was a mystery. He did not really know how they ended up doing it together either.

Everywhere could get dark, so that part was easy enough. But not everywhere was tight enough to make his breathing stop out of pure panic. The abandoned toilets were not exactly small, and he was not spending the rest of the night cramped in a stall. He crossed his fingers and hoped that despite being a terrible liar, he could bluff his way through it to avoid being challenged.

He turned the last corner and found his place side by side with her in front of the door. It was just for an hour. He could fake being stressed for that long, right? To really sell it he pulled on the collar of his jumper while glancing over at her. It was at that moment he was given a weak push to step in first.

«Alright…» He agreed, trying to hold his glee back at the situation. It was already dark, so Ophelia was probably already on edge. He didn’t particularly plan on pushing her today, but maybe just a little…

Putting a flat hand against the door he pushed it open. The space was less lit up than the corridor. Not very dark, but the shadows made the space seem a little eerie. He quickly stepped over the threshold and to the side, holding the door open for her. «No backing out now, Ophelia. We agreed to one hour!» He held the door until she stepped through.

He took a couple more steps into the space and surveyed it. Some pipes were leaking slightly. Tiles were cracked here and there. The door as it swung shut, creaked in the hinges. Eerie was the right word for the space. Thankfully, he never really had a problem with that. Moving over to the stalls, he leaned on one of them. «So, how should we make the time go by?» It was more his own thoughts spoken aloud than an actual question for her to answer. But he would not mind a suggestion either way.

Don't make a face. Don't make a face...

Ophelia didn't like the looks of the abandoned toilets. She thought the place looked dirty and not cared for. If she weren't feeling so alarmed every time she passed it during walks, and right now, as she was actually inside, she would've volunteered to clean the place... probably.

One thing she knew she wouldn't do in a million years was to sit anywhere -on the floor, the sink, the countertops, or the toilet. She could swear she was hearing the sound of wind faintly, which made her think if the windows weren't shut properly, but she didn't think that was the case.

Probably imagining things...

"We could... talk," she suggested. Of course, it wasn't the greatest idea to talk, considering that they could do so everywhere, but it wasn't the worst proposal either. Or so she thought. What they would talk about would be a greater problem.

"Or we could play a game. Not truth or dare, though," Ophelia didn't want to get another dare and go somewhere else that was probably just as bad, if not worse, than the abandoned toilets.

She yelped as she heard a sound from one of the toilet stalls. Don't look. Too late, because she did look, but nothing was there. Letting out a half-relieved sigh, Ophelia took curious steps toward that stall.

Inside, there was nothing that looked concerning, nor was there anything that looked promising. She was hoping to get this dare done with, seeing that there were more and more noises wanting to be heard. First, the wind -she was not imagining that-, now the bathroom stall. Did stalls have their own ghosts? Was there any non-being or being there that they didn't know about, trying to scare them off? Surely not, she didn't believe anyone would do that, no matter which state of the life-cycle they were in.

She stayed in the stall to calm herself down. She didn't know how Max was feeling about all of this, but if he were just as scared as her, she didn't want to freak him out more. Ophelia now really believed she was just imagining these sounds.

The sight of the abandoned space quickly became boring. It was all interesting at first sight, but there was a limit to how long cracked tiles and rusting pipes were intriguing. The limit had been reached. He took out his wand and began mindlessly turning it over in his hands.

Just talking seemed sort of boring. He couldn’t really think of anything witty or interesting to say. So he nodded Athena suggestion of a game. «Sure, we could do that!» Looking around once more, he kept an eye out for something that could be thrown without doing too much damage. Despite literally having his wand in hand, the thought of fixing anything with magic did not strike him.

He moved over to the row of sinks as Ophelia yelped. She really was scared. The sound they heard were nothing more than rushing water, he was sure. He picked up the suggestion of a game again as the girl moved to investigate. «We could take a piece of tile each, and see who can throw it further?»

His mind had left the suggestion before he even finished speaking it aloud. Ophelia walking into a stall was simply too good of a chance for a classic jumpscare. A mischievous grin spread across his face. Yes, this would be funny. He put his wand down on the sink he had been leaning against, and crept up behind her. He needed both hands free for this.

The door swung inward, so the task of slamming it while remaining outside of the stall turned out to be difficult. He pretended to do itin a hurry before he changed tactics. He walked in behind her, grabbed the stall door, and slammed it shut with all his might. At the same time he yelled into her ear. «Boo!» Then he doubled over with a cackle. «You should see your face right now! Bloody hilarious.» He stuttered out between the fits of laughter.

Frightened, Ophelia flinched back and let out a short shriek. Holding onto the stall's wall with her right hand, she shot a glare in Max's direction.

"I knew something was coming," she said, standing straight, "but I didn't think of this," Max really was something. Hearing his laughter, Ophelia couldn't help but chuckle, but she so wanted to convince herself that it was more like a nervous laughter -it might've been half because of that, and half because she found Max's action quite amusing.

"Just be glad the walls didn't collapse on us with how you slammed the door," she exaggerated the word 'slam', and walked toward the door. Grabbing the handle of the door, she tried to push it open. The door didn't budge, though. "Max...?"

The situation frightened Ophelia more than Max scaring her. Immediately, she started to think about what would or could happen if they couldn't open the door. She looked at Max helplessly. What was to be done, now? They'd definitely already been more than half an hour in the bathrooms; if they couldn't get out on time, before their curfew, they'd be in so much trouble.

"Could we use Alohomora?" she asked Max. They could try, but she wasn't sure if it would work, since the door wasn't technically locked.

He was bent over with laughter. Really, the way Ophelia had jumped was hilarious! The voice echoing in his head that this was sort of mean, was promptly ignored. Who had time for a guilty conscience when one could laugh instead? Not him, that was for sure.

Ophelia laughed too, so it was probably all good. He slowly straightened out, still with fits of laughing. He nodded to what she said. It was probably lucky. This whole room looked about ready to collapse at any moment. In all honesty it was a bit of a wonder that the door was still on its hinges after the slam.

He moved a tiny step to the side as she passed him, reaching for the door. The stall wasn’t exactly big. There were barely enough room for them to change places. The laughter died down as he turned after her. He was as eager, of not more, to get back into the open space. He caught the last of her trying the door and rolled his eyes. «Very funny!» The tone was nothing but sarcastic. She was trying to pull one of him, and he was not falling for it.

He reached past her and pushed on the door. No give. Strange! He could feel himself pale as the grin slowly dropped off his face. He simply had to put in a bit more effort, that was all! He stepped around her, and put all his weight and strength into getting the door to move. He groaned as he let go. They were stuck.

Funny, or not actually funny at all, the stall seemed to shrink around them. Had it always been so small? He stared at the wall for a moment. Even though it stood as still as any wall should, he could swear it was creeping inward. He pulled at his collar. He was wearing a sweater, and the collar was far from restricting. But it had to be. Why else was it suddenly so hard to breathe? He focused inward as he drew a deep breath. It felt like it stopped somewhere in his throat.

He was definitely scared now, and well on his way into a panic. Not that he wanted to admit it. He turned back to her at the mention of using magic to get out. «But does that work when it isn’t locked?» He patted over his pockets anyway. At least with his wand he had something to do with his hands. He went even paler as the realization dawned on him. «I… I think I put my wand down by the sink» He let out a nervous laugh. «Do you have yours?»

His mind began spinning with all the spells and charms they had learned over the last six months. His breaths came in short bursts, and he even held it at some points. They could of course set fire to it all. But that would probably burn them to crisps long before the stall walls burned down enough for them to get out. The stall was hell enough as it was, and making it worse seemed a new level of stupid.

«We could climb out? Or squeeze underneath?» He bent down to inspect the gap between the wall and floor. It was sizable. Maybe, just maybe they could fit… There was no way an eleven year old could, but he held onto the hope. He placed his behind on the ground, back to the wall. He folded his arms around his knees, and tried once more to take a deep breath. It caught in his throat. «What are we gonna do?!?» It had been just an hour til cerfew when they entered. The hour they had was surely almost up by now. Max had no space for the thought of how much trouble they were going to be in. The only things occupying his head was air, and the desire to get out.

Oh no.... Ophelia didn't like this. She didn't like the way Max was panicking. Why was he panicking? His breathing was heavy and stuttered, making her feel worried. "Max...?"

No, they couldn't climb out, the stall's walls were too high for them, and even if they could get on the toilet seat, there was nothing they could push themsleves up with. Ophelia wasn't a climber, and she wasn't sure that, even if Max was one, he could climb out in this state.

Squeezing underneath was another idea. Although only a three-year-old would be able to do that. Ophelia took a deep breath. Max was panicking, so she should try to stay calm, someone should. Maybe yell for someone to hear them? Could anyone hear them?

"Hey!" she hit the door with her palms and yelled. Nothing. She looked at Max. "Max, breathe!" she crouched down and held onto his shoulders and looked him in the eye. They couldn't afford panicking even if they were completely stuck here. She looked up, still in that sitting position, to see if there was a window above the stall. Nope, none.

Her focus shifted back to Max. She sat next to him and rubbed his back while trying to remember what her dad did when her mom panicked. Something with numbers and senses, she knew. But she wasn't sure about what the right order was.

"Max, look at me," she said firmly. "What are five things you can see?"

Max stuttered. This was the first time Ophelia saw him not being snarky, and even though she didn't know how to deal with it, she was glad he was comfortable enough with her to not be. "Uh- um- you... toilet seat," he looked around. Ophelia understood it, there wasn't anything special in the stall anyway. "my shoes... the walls and the... floor,"

"Good, good...," Ophelia tried to remember what the next thing was. four... four what? What were the other senses? "four things you hear," she said.

"your voice... my- my voice," Max took a deep breath and focused, "the wind... and the pipes," fair enough. The water in the pipes could be heard, and the wind's sound had not left the bathroom.

"Good, now three things you can feel," it didn't feel right for her to say three things you can smell or taste, because she couldn't even name three of those. Max seemed to be calming down. Progress.

"the floor, your hands, the wall," he was talking normal again, his breathing was still a bit shallow, but better than it was two minutes ago.

"Now tell me two things you smell," Ophelia sighed.

"the toilet," okay, yes, but what else was there? Even Ophelia couldn't think of something else. The toilets smelled terrible, so it was natural for Max to say them first. "and rust."

Ophelia nodded as Max's breathing calmed down, too. She sighed again, this time fully relieved. "One thing you taste,"

"Sweat and the Bertie Bott bean I ate before leaving the common room" He put on a bit of a shaky grin. "I swear I can still feel it tingle in my throat."

"That's two, you know," Ophelia chuckles, happy that the Maximilianus was back.

Godmodding Max with permission! OOC: The technique used is called the "5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique"! 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, 1 thing you taste. It's stated that Ophelia doesn't remember the right order, so in the rp it's a little different! The order written here in bold is the correct order!

When did it become so impossible to draw breath? He wasn’t sure. Only thing was that the more he tried, the harder it was. The shade of his face was slowly darkening, as he heaved and gasped. Was it possible for all oxygen to leave a perimeter out of nowhere? Because it sure seemed like it had.

He sort of heard Ophelia talking, but discerning understandable words from it was as good as impossible. He let go of his knees to put his head on them. Then not knowing what to do with them but still needing something to do with his hands, he dragging them through his hair to such a degree that his scalp would hate him tomorrow.

The grabbing of his shoulders was what finally made him look up. He had almost forgotten he wasn’t alone there. A wild look in his eyes, his head shot up and swiveled his head looking from side to side. His eyes found hers as she spoke again.

«F…five…» He repeated, trying to make some sort of sense of her request. In the state he was in, he couldn’t. So he simply complied. «Uh- um- you... toilet seat» He moved his head to the side, then to the floor. His words were stuttered between forced breaths. «My shoes... the walls and the... floor.»

Why did she insist on these stupid questions? Perhaps the better question was why did he answer. «Your voice... my… my voice» He tried again for a breath. He didn’t really notice, but it was easier. He focused as best he could. «the wind... and the pipes.»

Three things he could feel. What was there besides stress? Though he gathered that wasn’t what she meant. «The floor, your hands, the wall…» He sighed low. What he didn’t notice was that there was air in his lungs to do so. Whatever this strange quiz was, it seemed to be working. So upon being asked what he could smell, he didn’t hesitate. «The toilet» His breath was still shaky, but he was a lot calmer as he looked around. What else even was there? «And rust» He finally said. The smell was faint, but it was definitely there, and both of the smells made him want to scrunch his nose.

Upon the question of what he tasted, there was no doubts. «Sweat» He said immediately, before a faint smile spread over his lips. And the Bertie Bott bean I ate before leaving the common room.» He shook his head slightly. «Grass always lingers in the back of the throat for forever, and I swear I can still feel it tingle in the back of my throat!»

He almost let loose a chuckle. Why had he gotten so panicked in the first place? Sure, the stall wasn’t exactly huge, but the walls weren’t moving and there were space enough for the both of them. He let his gaze linger on the walls for a moment longer. Trying to kick it down would probably not lead to anything other than his own broken leg. And the gap underneath was nowhere near as big as they would need.

«But what are we gonna do? It is way passed cerfew, and I would really like it if we didn’t have to spend the entire night trapped in here…» He sat up a bit more as he continued to look around. «I could always try to knock the stall wall down, but…» When even he saw it was a bad idea, there was no chance it could turn out well.

𝕿he wind howled beyond the thick glass of the arched windows aligned on the obscured wall, stones shifting alongside the flicker of the rare moonbeams piercing through the thick layer of storm clouds darkening the night sky. Lightning struck, once, then twice, the rumble of the storm echoing through the castle, seemingly shaking its very foundations. The moon was reduced to a firmament, the remaining of the soon to be new moon struggling to outshine the black mantle that has invaded the skies.

A chill lingered in the air, coursing down her spine, skin tickling with a bad premonition. Elena adored storms. Her newly appointed role provided her with a pristine excuse to continue her midnight wanders, under the guise of officiality. The insomniac, feathered-footed, stepped lightly on the cold stones paving the endless corridor, moving without a sound. Each war-like drum of the thunder pleased her ears, bliss clearly visible on every shift of her face. There was no other sound that could soothe the rumbles of her mind, none that could quiet it like storms. It was as though its naturally loud nature managed to interrupt the looming thoughts beneath her mind, resulting in a very odd silence. Usually, she would even be able to succumb to a particularly resting slumber, but tonight, for some reason, restlessness was carved in her bones.

Without thinking, her steps led her to the abandoned toilets of the second floor, likely guided by the memory of a past encounter in these very halls. A loud scream had teared the night, and— her entire body tender, as though spiders were crawling under her skin. Voices, coming from the bowels of the corridor. Undoubtedly human, the daughter of the moon had nothing to fear from her recurring hallucinations, but the suddenness of it all was, to say the least, odd. Rule breakers?

Only students with nefarious intentions, or terrified first years believing to be brave would be found in such a location, which caused a single frown to crease the smooth skin of her forehead. Tucking a golden strand behind her shoulder, delicate fingers unsheathed a wand from her pocket, wrapping around the wooden object with confidence. Wary, the raven stepped forward, navy eyes concentrated on the possible origins of those uncanny whispers.

"Hello?"

Undoubtedly the most cliche phrase to ever exist, yet she had not found a better catchphrase. Pondering her options between announcing her status as a prefect and directly entering, she lingered at the threshold for a few seconds, listening. Those of us who rarely sleep at night tend to have developed better hearing than the rest of their peers, merely from the fact that when the moon rises, all sounds echoes twice as loud. Not hearing any dangerous-sounding signs, she finally pushed the door open, stepping in the deserted toilets. ???

Sighing in relief when Max became his usual, not-panicking self, Ophelia sat on the floor with her back leaning toward the wall. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath as Max started to talk. It was one hundred percent past curfew, and this would be the first time she'd ever stayed out this late, although she wasn't sure what time it exactly was. Just like Max, she'd prefer not to stay in the stall the whole night; sleeping on a warm and soft bed would be much more preferable. And if it did come to that, she was sure she couldn't bring herself to lie down on the dirty floor of an abandoned bathroom stall.

They didn't have many options, though. One would be staying here; nobody would find them, and they had to stay the night, or even many days, in the stall, until a prefect, professor, or perhaps an elf found them. Option number two would be screaming for help; yeah, no, they've done enough of that; Ophelia was sure that if she screamed any more than she already had, her vocal cords would get damaged. Any other option? She didn't think s-

"Hello?"

Last option, someone would find them. As soon as she heard the voice calling out, Ophelia stood up, "Hello!?" She yelled, not sure if she had replied in a quieter voice, the other person would hear them. She hit the stall door with her palm again and looked at Max, seeing his reaction.
