- Monday 22nd September
With @Max Kenneally Vilder -

It had been three weeks since school started again, and Eira was slowly getting used to life at the castle.

Between classes, studying, and especially all the people around her, the young witch barely had any time to herself. She was starting to settle into her House, wearing its colors with a quiet sense of pride.

As expected, she hadn’t received a single owl from her parents. Given how cold their relationship was, it didn’t surprise her at all.

Still, she refused to become the joke of her family, so she put all her energy into her studies.

That Monday, she tied her hair into a high ponytail, letting a few strands fall loose to hide her pale eyes. With her things in hand, she headed toward the History of Magic classroom, doing her best to avoid running into anyone.

If there was one thing Eira couldn’t ignore at Hogwarts, it was the number of Muggles and half-bloods. It disgusted her more than she liked to admit. She knew not all half-bloods were the same, and that some of them even shared her values.

Unfortunately, she rarely met any of those, as if trouble followed her wherever she went.

She moved quietly through the corridors, silently hoping the stairs wouldn’t start acting up and would take her back to the first floor without any problems

Once she arrived at her final destination, the young girl let out a slight sigh, then greeted the teacher and entered the classroom, where she sat down on a chair near the window.

From this spot, she could see what was happening outside while following the lesson. She also liked this seat because it was neither at the front, nor in the middle, nor at the back, as she didn't particularly want to stand out.

She carefully placed her things on her desk, leaned back in her chair, and glanced outside while waiting for the lesson to begin.

It had already been a long day. A long day of mistakes and blunders. It started with forgetting his own name when talking to an older student. It did not get better by getting lost on the way to potions and arriving late. This was the last class before lunch, where he would most certainly spill on himself in some way. He had followed the rest of Gryffindor students from their last class, so thankfully finding the way was not an issue. After getting distracted by a portrait in the hallway he burst through the door, just in time.

After giving an apologetic grin to the professor he made his way through the room. He would have preferred a seat in the front. It was easier to hold himself accountable if he was in plain view. He needed that, especially since he tended to drift off and not remember a word afterwards. Sadly today all the seats in the front were occupied. No matter, he would just have to find another seat. His gaze drifted to the row of windows. Maybe if he sat there he would be able to focus. The view wasn’t the same as the fresh air of actually being outside, but it would hopefully help nonetheless. Letting his gaze sweep up and down the row, he could only summarize that being late for class was a bad idea. He wasn’t even late, and the only seat available near the windows were next to a girl that looked… well, uptight.

Nevertheless he found his way over. Dumping his satchel on the desk with a bang, ruffling through his hair and taking a deep breath before turning to the girl and sitting down. «You don’t mind, right?» A stupidly wide grin on his face clearly showing he was not about to move, even if his company was unwanted. Without really waiting for an answer he leaned over to his satchel and rummaged through in the hope that he brought enough supplies. Book, quill, ink… Where was the parchment? He dug his hand deeper and rummaged through. What he pulled out was ripped, and more covered in ink than it would have been if he had filled the parchment with writing. He looked around before sighing and beginning to wipe the parchment with a tissue. As most of the ink had dried he only manages to rip it further. Only then does his gaze land on the girl right next to him. Putting up an innocent smile he leaned in her direction. «You don’t happen to have a bit of extra parchment, do you? I can give it back the next time we have class together.» He would never remember, and honestly he had no idea when he next had a class with the Slytherins. But if he said that there was no way she would let him borrow it.

As time went on, the young girl seemed to become more and more distracted by the window. She often found life to be grey, dull and monotonous.

She had never really been happy or felt any parental or family love, she had become accustomed to being perfect, willing to do anything for her family's recognition and to fade into the background.

Being the perfect child but in the shadows, she knew that even if she wasn't very visible, one wrong step could bring her father's wrath upon her, and she absolutely did not want that after trying so hard to get his attention.

She was brought out of her thoughts by the noise beside her. Still sitting upright in her chair, she turned to the intruder who seemed to be making himself comfortable and gave him an icy stare. He asked her if it was okay for him to sit there.

She looked at him long and hard, and delicately. His hair was tousled, his belongings were scattered about, his cape was wrinkled, his hands were still stained with ink, and he had a rather... sardonic smile ? Who did he think he was ?

If Eira could say everything that was going through her mind, she would have pointed it out to him long ago, but she tilted her head and, with a small smile, said:

- Only Gryffindors can be in such a state. I suppose if I told you that you were disturbing me, you wouldn't leave ?

Then, while trying to get as far away from the young man as possible, she glanced at him. Brown hair, freckles, green eyes... not ugly, but not handsome either.

She tried not to touch him, then when she was about to settle down and resume her thoughts, he interrupted her a second time.

- Wasn't it enough to bother me once ? Pfff... you'll have to learn to do it yourself, you can't always count on others, but anyway... with guys like you, it's to be expected, we all know them, the charming little smile doesn't work on me, sorry Mr Freckles.

Then she leaned over to her bag, took out a thick white copy, a sign of good quality, and handed it to him, saying :

- No need to give it back, I know you'll forget, and I don't need it.

She looked at him. He seemed happy, but about what? She couldn't find anything here that made her smile. Well, yes... she should consider herself lucky to have finally escaped the family home. She couldn't stand the cold and loneliness of the manor any longer.
Then, listening with one ear to the lesson beginning, she plunged back into her thoughts, as focused.

She was afraid that someone would notice her doubts and insecurities and use them against her. Her father had always told her to remain proud no matter what happened, but what would she do if someone managed to destabilise her ? What would her father do if he found out that she could talk to or even associate with non-wizards ? Brrr... she preferred not to think about it.

Sorry for the late, I'm here now :cute:

Considering the disaster that he presented as, one would think Max had one of the most hectic days of his young life. It was not true. Despite being late to every single class so far this morning he found he had more than enough time for distractions. At least he thought he did. Having his supplies in front of him he carelessly swept his satchel off the desk, giving the girl only an innocent smile to her first remark.

The parchment was a problem though. Waiting for what he hoped to be a positive response, he already started tearing small pieces of parchment. Occupying his hands was always a good idea after all. Her comment surprised him more than anything. She was well spoken, certainly more than he was. He had to wrinkle his nose a bit in concentration just to keep up. What he did pick up on however, was the last part.

Slowly his smile of innocence changed into a knowing smirk. He accepted the parchment with a nod of thanks before looking closer at it. It was thick, and near white «Fancy» He murmured. He lifted it to his face and sniffed it. It smelled fresh. Any fresher and he would be rubbing his face in sap instead of parchment. The girl was rich, that much was for sure. Her robes alone told him that much. Pristine and fitting just right. He did not bother to look down at himself. The robe was a bit faded in color, with sleeves long enough to cover his hands if he did not fold them up.

As the class began, he could not subdue the urge to make a new remark. Leaning in, he lowered his voice slightly. Tone nonchalant and just a bit over the top. «So, you think my smile is charming?» He leaned back with glee, running a hand through his hair once again before adding «You know, you can look at my freckles any time. The sun gives them for free, and I am not above sharing» He didn’t really know what the sentence meant, but when he overheard an older student say almost the exact same thing it sounded so great. He did his best to not stumble over the words, and thought he succeeded to such a degree that he added a wink at the end.

As the young girl tried her best to immerse herself in her thoughts, she saw the other fool pondering beside her.
She glanced in his direction and caught him... smelling paper. She wasn't judging; everyone had their own passions and shouldn't be mocked, but a slight smirk crossed her lips.

As she listened to the professor talk about the history of magic, she was surprised to find the young man's face rather close to hers, which immediately made her recoil. Then, while trying to calm her racing heart, she listened to what he was saying.

His smile... charming... but he was dreaming. This time, the young girl couldn't hide or try to conceal her laughter. She whispered to him as she moved closer and gazed into his eyes:

- You, charming... but have you lost your mind ? Even a mountain troll could do better, and I'm not exaggerating.

Eira rolled her eyes when the young Gryffindor made his rather narcissistic remarks about himself and his freckles. But it was true that, come to think of it, the young girl still didn't know his name, but then again... she wasn't sure she really wanted to know.
Mr Freckles, the Gryffindor narcissist, was doing rather well, wasn't he ?

It was true that she didn't have one, and she would be lying if she said it was ugly, but she wasn't going to admit it. She liked her own face, one of the few things she liked about herself, because she could at least claim that she had inherited it from her parents. Even if she didn't think much of it or even appreciate it, she did resemble them.

She looked at the lesson and realised she wouldn't be able to concentrate today. Her thoughts were becoming more insistent and, with a neighbour like hers, she wasn't likely to be able to stay interested in the teacher's words for more than two minutes.

So she turned to her neighbour, resting her head on her hand, and replied in the same vein as him:

- But tell me... are you obsessed with me that you have to talk to me all the time ? Do you realise that you're disrupting my learning ? It's only September and you're already starting to fall behind in class. What will your parents say ?

She knew that if she made even one wrong move with her parents, she would regret it. She knew very well that the only thing she was good for was to make the family look good. She couldn't even imagine the look on her father's face when he found out about her bad grades, or her mother's... She was already aware that her mother never looked at her daughter, so it didn't really matter.

Ouch. His smirk faded for a moment. The line was rather strange, but did she really have to laugh like that? He thought mountain trolls were cool. Not the brightest perhaps, but then again neither was he. He wrinkled his nose slightly before shaking it off. She was probably just teasing anyway, and he was not about to succumb to such a statement. Just in time too, for her next statement.

He took a bit of time taking in the complexities of what she was saying. The comment about what his parents might think hit harder than he was willing to admit, even to himself. But he shrugged it off. Even if they would be disappointed, they would hopefully not hear a word of his skills before the end of the year. He had loads of time before then!

His grin grew as he leaned on his desk with one arm, turning towards her. «This class is about as boring as it gets» He carelessly shrugged. «I mean, history is all about the past. I care more about the here and now. So might as well fill the time with anything else. Even talking with you» He considered winking again, but it seemed a bit much. So he lifted a hand to ruffle his hair instead.

«How can anyone find this interesting anyway? I am practically falling asleep here!» He feigned falling asleep before chuckling. The confidence was fake of course. He was actually really troubled by the fact that he could not focus long enough to pay attention properly. His mind wandering constantly and it did not help that he was in a constant state of confusion when actually listening. No, it was better just not trying. Rather that than utterly failing.

Leaning in once more he added with quite a spark to him «If I need to know something later, you’ll tell me won’t you? Desk mates and all…» As he spoke his mind wandered elsewhere and he found himself unable to hold back a rather loud snort. Looking back at her he felt the need to explain. They were teasing surely, but he did not want her to think he was just outright laughing at her. He gestured to the lined up windows along the wall. «Do you think owls can spot glass better than other birds? Imagine getting a letter in class. The owl just flying straight into it» He snorted again. Of course it had not occurred to him that this might harm the birds. The picture in his head was just so funny.

The young girl rolled her eyes when the young man continued his teasing; it definitely didn't work on her.
She wasn't the type to get excited about the first guy who came along. She tended to keep to herself, and if, by some misfortune, one of her parents were to find out that she was in the company of someone of impure blood, she would have a very difficult time.

Unfortunately, even though she tried her hardest to ignore him, she couldn't bring herself to ignore him and continued to look at him.

She looked at him for a long time, her clear eyes searching his, intensely looking for something, a meaning, an emotion he was trying to hide. She had a gift for knowing what people were thinking, well... not really, but she knew how to read emotions through someone's eyes. It wasn't rocket science, you just had to hide them.

She had learned to reproduce this technique a long time ago, always appearing cold to others, putting all the warmth of her body, her memories and positive emotions in a little corner of her being and closing this little box.
She replied anyway, to this young Gryffindor whose name she still did not know.

- The history of magic isn't the most interesting subject, but you shouldn't find it boring, to say the least. I find that our history, or rather that of wizards, is very complex and difficult. We have struggled to be accepted, and it remains a sensitive subject.
If you really can't concentrate, then... that's another problem.

He ruffled her hair, and although the girl didn't want to laugh, she still managed a slight smile. Eira hadn't moved since the beginning of the lesson, saving her energy for later. She certainly wasn't going to waste it on this dunce who didn't want to work.

She rolled her eyes again and sighed after thinking about it. He didn't want to concentrate, which was certainly a problem, but now he was counting on someone else to help him? He wasn't making any effort, so why should she ?

- Not only do you not want to work, but you think I'm going to let you skip my class ? You really need to pay attention. It's September, and whether we're desk mates or not, we don't know each other. You don't know anything about me, and I don't even know your name.

The brunette was looking out the window when the boy approached her, receiving an owl in class. It would be a good idea, but too distracting, and above all, the aviary would be useless if we did that.

- Yeah... you're probably right, but I don't know anything about it. My parents never send me letters, so it's probably not a problem for me.

She didn't want to admit it, and probably never would, but a twinge of sadness pierced her heart. She was sad to see that she meant so little to her family that she received no letters or news from them. But that wasn't really surprising. After spending her childhood as a ghost, could she really expect to receive any family love ?

He had to admit he was enjoying this. He would rather have done it anywhere else, but the banter was fun nonetheless. He proceeded to bounce one leg and tap his quill rhythmically on the desk in front of him. It made a pretty good beat, better than he thought would be possible for the low volume.

The girl next to him did not intrigue him much. It was more just fun to see her struggle with his antics. And as long as she kept on giving him the attention and outlet he wanted, he was not likely to stop.

He snorted at her comment. «Sure, hearing dull stories of wizards, witches and creatures that lived hundreds of years ago is my idea of an hour well spent too…» His tone was more than just a little sarcastic, and he followed it by shaking his head slightly and rolling his eyes.

The impulse to ruffle her hair was just that. An impulse. Had he done that to his sister he would have gotten punched in return. This girl however, only seemed to smile. That broadened his own in return as he went back to tapping his quill. «Oh, please! The year has barely even started. There’s plenty of time to catch up before anything will be marked as permanent»

He leaned a bit closer as he lowered his voice slightly. «We may not know each other, but I’m so charming you can’t help helping out.» He leaned back with a big grin. «And since you so clearly want to know, I’ll tell you. My name is Max!» He didn’t bother with his full name. Most days he couldn’t remember it anyway, and it was far too long for casual use.

The next comment about her not receiving any post made him halt. Could that really be? He himself received letters from home just about every day so far. It helped a lot with the homesickness. Studying her for a moment, as if trying to get a glimpse behind the mask. He finally spoke. «Really? That’s really sad… His tone was surprisingly sincere, dropping the smile. «Then what do you do on the days you miss home so much it hurts?» He kept his face neutral, but an edge of curiosity entered his voice.

The young man continued the conversation, now moving his leg continuously like a dog wagging its tail. Eira frowned. The more time passed, the less patience she had, and she told herself that they were really not meant to get along.

She rolled her eyes once again. This boy was truly uneducated, he had no respect for the past or for the wizards who had lived long ago. What would her parents have said if she had had the nerve to answer that ?

Pff... She let out a snicker that crossed the barrier of her lips. He really wanted to cheat on her, or get his notes back.

- But you don't have any friends to get your lessons back, so you either do what everyone else does and listen, or you don't. It's not that complicated, you just don't want to do what everyone else does.

Despite everything, she decided to hand him the parchment from the corner of the sheet, taking care to avoid any contact.
Now that the young man seemed to want to keep quiet, she could finally concentrate on the damn lesson ! Oh well, she'd never have any peace with someone like him.

So his name was Max... interesting, she didn't want to give him her first name, and he hadn't asked for it, so she preferred not to reveal her identity. That way, it would remain more mysterious, and at least she wouldn't see him again.

- Mmm... I should have said “pleased to meet you, Max”, but with all the noise you're making, I don't feel like it anymore to wish it for you.

She knew that she would never, for herself or her parents, show even the slightest bit of emotion towards anyone, so a smile or a grimace was very poorly received. It was as if one could not control oneself, and that was absolutely not the image the Slytherin wanted to convey of her family, so she continued to stare at him and then turned her attention away from him.

He seemed shocked to learn that the young girl never heard from her family.
For her, this was normal, but she knew that for some people, the bond was stronger than anything else. She looked at him, then looked away, disgusted by the situation.

- I'm not looking for pity in your eyes, otherwise don't talk to me, I'm not worth it... that sign of weakness. I never had a family. For me, the people who gave me life are my breeders, and that's where it ends.
I never really had a home either, so I can say that I don't feel homesick, and my family... remains something I didn't choose and that doesn't make me feel anything. That's how I feel about it.

Sorry it took me so long!! <3

He outright cackled at her statement about him. He cared a great delight. So much in fact that he still made an effort on assignments. It was just generally better for everyone if he spent the classes like this. If he were to pay proper attention, he would end up frustrated and the class would never get through the assigned curriculum because of his non-stop questions.

«Sure!» He leaned in a bit, his smirk widening. «Or maybe I just wanted to offer you the chance to do me a solid» He would be the king of the corridors soon enough, and he would be nothing but a jerk if he then ignored those who helped him.

He accepted the parchment with a tip of an imaginary hat before the conversation turned to names. He scrunched up his face a bit. «Actually, I think it’s Maximillian or something, but it so looong I can never remember it!» He slouched a tiny bit in his seat. It was a bit embarrassing, the teachers calling out his name and him being as clueless as everybody else. «It might not be a pleasure, but I’m sure you’ll be glad of it sooner or later!» He tore a bit off the parchment and began rolling it into a ball in his hands. He was terrible with names, so one he was not told was just one less to forget.

He was left a little speechless at her well formulated declaration. He couldn’t even begin to imagine a life like that. He did pick up on the fact that the subject was unwanted though. Forever feeling the need to make everyone comfortable, he pivoted wildly. «I think the lesson is almost over» He commented smoothly. «Any plans for what to eat for lunch?»
