Isabeau gave me persmission for slight godmodding

The platform had been a battle of colour and noise. Students urged forward and back, robes flapping, trunks scraping along the stone, and owls hooted from their cages. Parents shouted names over the train's roar, their hands full of parcels, letters, and last-minute instructions. Children waved tearful goodbyes. Bright banners fluttered from the trunks, barely visible through the crowd.

I slid open the door to the only empty cabin available.
The cabin was comfortably quite with only the low roars of the Hogwarts Express beneath me.

I had chosen it deliberately-an unoccupied space, away from the noise of chattering students and the shoving of luggage and sobbing from goodbyes and overstimulated pets escaping and so much more I could not handle.

I pulled my trunk on the top bench, where the luggage compartment is, so that it sat neatly above it, everything in its place. With a peaceful quite.
The cushions on the seats were worn, the table polished but scratched, and the windows framed a blur of countryside.

I pulled a book from my bag and settled against the soft material of the bench. The words were flowing whilst the train’s sound and clatter became distant: I almost forgot the world outside the cabin.

A sharp knock at the door made me pause. I didn’t move, didn’t speak. My eyes lifted dangerously slow. The knock came again, lighter this time.

The stranger slid the door open just enough so I could see her. She then stepped inside.

Ride or Die
The platform was absolute chaos. Thick steam from the scarlet Hogwarts Express filled the air. Owls screeched everywhere. Children, young and old, clung to their mother and father, bidding them farewell until they came back home for the winter holidays. Isabeau and her family stood among the crowds.

Her sixteen- and fourteen-year-old brothers, Lucien and Thèo, towered over her on either side. Lucien held an air of indifference around him, while Thèo fidgeted with the strap of his satchel, neither of them paying attention to the babying their little sister was receiving. Her mother adjusted a loose strand of her brunette hair with precise fingers, a sad smile resting on her lips.

"You'll write." Her father said, less of a question and more as a demand.

Isabeau responded evenly, almost scoffing at the ridiculous question, "Obviously." Her parents nodded once briefly in approval.

"You two watch over her." her mother said strictly, and her brothers snapped to attention, nodding in assurance.

The train whistle blew in warning. She watched as her parents gave Thèo and Lucien a hug goodbye. Then it was her turn. She allowed them each a brief hug. Controlled and proper as they whispered in her ear the reminders of care and caution. Then, before she knew it, she was walking away without looking back.

Once on the train, it seemed that the inside was just as chaotic as the outside. The halls were loud and narrow and full of people who had no awareness of personal space. There was too much noise. Too much shoving. Her patience quickly thinned.

She walked through the halls like she was on a mission, knocking and opening cabin doors one by one and wishing her brothers hadn't ditched her. Each one was occupied and loud in its own way. Some were filled with excited laughter or playful arguments of reunited friends. Some with other young first-years, crying. She rolled her eyes at those and promptly left. Others were just pure chaos.

Until finally, when she knocked on a door and pulled it open, it was silent. The sound of nothing reached her ears like a small mercy, and Isabeau breathed a sigh of relief. Without apologizing or asking permission, she entered the cabin, closed the door, and took a seat. She only looked up once she was settled.

Her gaze swept over the girl methodically. From the book in her lap to the way she held it. The absence of fidgeting and the measured stillness. Her head tilted slightly to the side. This girl was nowhere near as overwhelmed with emotion as any of the other students. Their eyes met, and the air filled with silent assessments and awareness.

Most would rush to fill the quiet with small talk, laugh nervously, or introduce themselves too quickly. But Isabeau did not. She wanted to know if this girl was worth it. Worth her name and her words. An impulse flickered within. She wanted to test. To prod and see if the calm would crack.

So instead of breaking the quiet, she leaned back against the seat with composed ease, crossing one leg over the other as though she had been expected all along. Her gaze didn't waver once.

My book did not lower. Most people would have announced themselves, at least with a cough or a small nod, maybe even a small hi. This one did not.
Good. I couldn’t be bothered with silly introductions anyway.

My eyes remained fixed on my book as the girl took a seat opposite me.

The carefully assessed her movements.
I observed her. She was composed. Silent. Not loud, but not quite small either. Her presence had a certain weight, a subtle one. She didn't seem weak. Interesting.

I went back to my book and silence stretched between us, broken only by the occasional turned of a page.
I didn’t bother introducing myself. The fact that I acknowledged her presence was enough. Names, after all, are earned.
My eyes lifted from the page briefly. Her expression remained unreadable. Posture perfect. Still. She had the manners my mother battled for me to have but ended up giving up after my obvious rejection of them. She almost seemed like she was me, but the way my mother wanted to.
Me I'm a proud father's girl.

Time passed quietly. The rhythmic roars of the train beneath as the landscape blured.

Then-

The train stopped. Not gradually. Just like that. The metal made a horrible noise as movement died in an instant. The usual hum of the engine and the subtle sway of the carriages vanished. For half a second, there was nothing.

Then chaos.

Voices erupted in panicked noise. Shouts, confusion, sobbing, fear evident in every face through the small compartment window. Feet pounded in the corridor outside. Someone demanded answers. Questions were asked but no one replied.
I rolled my eyes and carried on reading.

Everything outside this compartment had changed in the past five minutes, but within this small, quiet space, nothing had. the compartment itself had paused time.

Isabeau didn't flinch when the train jolted. Her fingers tightened on the velvet seat to steady herself, but her spine remained straight, and her chin remained high. She listened as the normal chatter from other compartments turned into panicked yelps and confused shouts. Her gaze moved from the girl in front of her to the compartment door, where she could see students clambering about in the corridor, trying to assess the situation.

She exhaled through her nose, rolling her eyes. Typical. Not one person out there had an ounce of calm or self-control. Panic and fear were easily avoidable by refusing to participate. Obviously, there was a reasonable explanation out there for why the train had stopped, and predictably, that thought had not crossed the minds of any other student in their vicinity. She scoffed quietly, her eyes shifting away from the corridor and back to the girl in front of her, observing again.

It seems her wish for a test had been granted. Like herself, the girl infront of her remained unbothered by the sudden interruption. Instead, the girl had remained reading, her position unchanged. It was as if all the hysteria outside of their little cabin was the perfect background ambience.

The corner of her lips raised slightly, but it wasn't exactly a smile. There was more approval.

Isabeau adjusted the cuff of her sleeve, the movement precise and small. Outside, a voice was calling out, asking if anyone knew what was happening. She paid no attention, instead tilting her head towards the girl across from her.

"They act as though the train derailed into the sea." Isabeau remarked lightly, her tone as smooth as polished marble as she finally broke their little silence. "How dramatic."

I didn’t look up from my book, not fully. My fingers rested lightly on the page, marking where I stopped. Out of the corner of my eyes, I caught her: the subtle tilt of her head, the faint lift at the corner of her lips, the quiet sigh and roll of her eyes. It was almost as if I were staring at a reflection of myself.

Outside, the chaos still roared against the compartment doors, shouts, hurried footsteps, panic, but none of it reached us. The compartment was a bubble, a space apart from the frenzy of the train.

"They act as though the train derailed into the sea. How dramatic."

I closed the book with deliberate slowness. I leaned back against the seat, crossing one leg over the other, lifting my gaze to her eyes.

“People tend to like to make big deals out of things,” I said, my voice even, calm, matching her tone “People like a good show until they’re part of it.”

I watched her carefully. She didn’t blink. She didn’t flinch.

Curious. There was something about this girl , that made it feel as though I was talking to myself, or a reflection of myself but she was just as unflinching

Isabeau watched as she slowly closed the book. Not quickly. Not with irritation either. But with the same care and deliberation that governed her own movements. And finally, as the girl crossed one leg over the other and leaned back in her seat, Isabeau's eyes met the ones across from her.

She held that steely gaze without hesitation, her own sharp eyes staring right back.

Outside of their compartment, the noise swelled again. More hurried footsteps, murmurs of rumors spreading around the train like wildfire as one student was insisting something had happened at the front of the train. Her attention didn't waver as she listened to what came out of the girl's mouth in response to her comment about dramatics.

The corner of her mouth lifted, faint, but unmistakable.

Her voice followed a moment later, smooth and sharp. "Yes, well, panic is the fastest way to prove one has no idea what they're doing. After all," she continued cooly, "uncertainty seems to make people terribly theatrical."

She paused, her eyes studying the girl infront of her once more. "Though it seems neither of us feels the need to join in on this... investigation.".

It was almost terrifying how speaking to the girl in front of her was almost like talking to herself in a mirror. Not appearance-wise, but in composure.

Isabeau had expected this train ride to be insufferably dull, with a large number of nervous first-years, overeager students, and far too many people desperate to prove themselves interesting to whoever would watch or listen.

Yet here she sat. In a quiet bubble surrounded by chaos, across from someone who had not asked her name, who had not introduced herself, and most importantly, had not bothered to even pretend the outside theatrics deserved even a second of her time.

Much like Isabeau herself.

I let my gaze meet hers fully, letting the quiet stretch between us, heavy and deliberate. Her presence still mirroring my behaviour.

“Yes,” I said finally, in a controlled manner, “Theatrics are exhausting for those who cannot control themselves.”

I leaned back slightly, letting my shoulders fall just enough to seem natural while still keeping the same composed demeanour she carried so effortlessly. I didn’t even realize I had mirrored her posture until I looked over at her. Crossing my arms loosely, I studied her as I would a book I’d been meaning to read carefully for years, noticing every subtle detail: the tilt of her head, the slight lift of her chin, the way her fingers rested against her lap.
Huh. Interesting

The engine suddenly restarted, roaring beneath us, filling the background with a mechanical beat. The train carried on as if nothing had occurred.
I looked toward the corridor, catching the decreasing panic in other compartments. Then I returned my full attention to her.

“Curious,” I murmured softly, almost to myself, letting the words float in the air between us. “How only a few can withstand silence.”

A faint, almost visible smile tugged at the corner of my lips. Not warm. Not friendly. It was recognition. She had potential. Of what I did not know exactly, but she had potential.

“It seems,” I said finally, carefully, with that same manners, “we have no need to explain ourselves to anyone else here.”

Isabeau did not immediately respond to the girl in front of her as the train lurched back into motion once more. The engine resumed its normal, predictable rhythm. Around their compartment, the chaos settled down as order was restored, and embarrassed murmurs and forced laughter added to the hum of noise outside.

Her gaze remained on the girl, her chin tilting up slightly in agreement at her words. Isabeau watched as the girl seemingly relaxed into her seat, leaning back and letting her shoulders drop. Isabeau knew better than to assume she was truly relaxed.

Her ears perked up again at the next comment from the girl's mouth, and Isabeau's lips turned upwards into a barely noticeable smile. "Yes, well, silence tends to reveal more than noise ever could." she spoke, her voice measured and certain.

She adjusted her hands in her lap ever so slightly. Isabeau believed that many feared silence. She was not one of them. Silence left people exposed, stripped of distraction or performance. It required one to be composed and present. In control.

The girl's next words triggered another barely-there smile from Isabeau. It seemed the two girls understood each other quite well. She responded smoothly. "Explaining oneself is usually reserved for one seeking the approval of others." She paused, the moment hanging in the air before she finished her analysis. "We are not."

Isabeau also leaned back into her seat more, her posture relaxing as she regarded the girl infront of her as simply an equal rather than a stranger.

I watched her carefully as she spoke, noting the absence of hesitation, the precision in every word. The train had settled down now.

My gaze did not leave, she piqued my interest, “Exactly.” I replied simply.

Her next words did not surprise me. If anything, they confirmed what I had already concluded.
"We are not."

I nodded, giving a sign of approval.
I leaned back slightly further into my seat, no longer observing her as a stranger, but as a future companion, even a friend perhaps.
“No,” I said simply. “We’re not.”
Silence followed again, but it was different now.

The darkness outside was no longer endless, in fact, I could see little bubbles of light, appearing and disappearing in the evening sky as the train moved fast. It was faint then became clearer as we moved,
The train began to slow down at once.
We had arrived.
I nodded at Isabeau before standing up.

My gaze returned to her one final time, “See you in Slytherin," I say as I gripped the handle of the door, " I'm Tes by the way.” I said realising we haven't properly introduced each other
Then, without another word, I slid the door open.

The noise returned instantly.
