indentAdelyn had always been diligent at studying - at the things she wanted to study, that was. She was no teachers pet, of course. In fact, her small stature and her tendency to struggle in some classes often made teachers dismissive of her, if not a bit prone to teasing her. While she wasn't a lost cause, she certainly wasn't any student to write home about. No, in many of her classes, Adelyn was average.

indentBut in the classes she loved? Sometimes it took a while, and she wasn't always successful, but Adelyn would pull several all-nighters, up far past any of the other students had gone home, rehearsing information and pacing up and down the study rooms - whether it be at her old academy or her home. And usually, her studying caught up to her, and one day Adelyn would show up and impress her teachers - who would then in turn act as if they knew she was extraordinary the whole time.

indentSo, being muggle-born in a school full of wizards and witches who had magic coursing through the blood of all of their ancestors, Adelyn was determined to prove herself. She didn't want to be better than anyone - she just wanted to excel at being a wizard. She had no idea how she had gotten this magic, but now that she had it there was no way she was taking any time to mess around. Adelyn meant business.

indentFinding a quiet spot in the library, Adelyn had to hold her books down with her chin, the heavy stack weighing down in her arms as she carried it over to a table, practically breathless by the time she dropped them down on the top with a rude SLAM! She looked around the room, thankful that there was only one other Hufflepuff. Adelyn let out a sigh of relief. If it had been a Ravenclaw? Oh, Adelyn would have been "expelliarmus-ed" into the next century. A sigh of relief and an apologetic smile was given to the Hufflepuff by Adelyn before she shuffled into her sheet, rummaging through her books to see what subject she wanted to tackle first.

indent"Let's see... Potions, already done," (Perks of being the daughter of a Chemist was that you usually were fairly good at anything involving molecules and mixtures) "Can't really tame beasts in here... Oo, Charms!" Adelyn grinned, fishing the book out from near the bottom of the pile with a grunt before placing it on the table. Already her notes were filled with furious scribblings and doodlings. By the time she had gotten out of class Adelyn's hand was killing her. She was left-handed, after all. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to try casting with her right hand? Sure, it wasn't her dominant hand, but then at least her hand wouldn't cramp up while trying to cast a spell after she had been taking notes for an hour.

indentA determined smile crossed the blondes face as she scooted back in her chair, scooping up her wand, and looking for an appropriate target. A small, crumpled piece of paper would suffice, right? Nothing wrong with a little reducin', reusin', and recyclin'!

indentPlacing the crumped sheet in front of her in a delicate manner, Adelyn took a few steps back until she hit the table in front of her. Noticing that her wand had already migrated its way to her left hand, Adelyn quickly flexed the fingers of her right hand before clasping her fingers together, stretching them out in front of her, and transferring her wand to her right hand. "Let's do this." She murmured to herself in a serious tone, the look of determination and concentration in her eyes making it appear as though she was about to try apparating for the first time. Pointing her wand at the piece of paper, Adelyn noticed her right hand was a bit shakey. Hey, no problem. Just concentrate...

indent"Incendio... incendio..." Adelyn muttered the incantation under her breath before her arm straightened, and she attempted to trace a flame with her right hand, "INCENDIO!" The girl cried out with all the feriocity she could muster.

indentSee, now there was a reason that wizards didn't just go switching up their wand hand willy-nilly - and Adelyn could see that pretty clearly now. Rather than ignite a small spark in the paper as she had intended, the flame shot out in front of the blonde, bouncing off of an enchanted plant, and ricocheted towards Adelyn. The Gryffindor let out a scream, ducking down as the flame passed her and burst into flames on the corner of a frame. The Hufflepuff, who seemed as equally traumatized as Adelyn, quickly scrambled for their wand and shouted a spell, causing the flame to die out with little damage. Of course, what had actually been damaged was Adelyn's pride. It had burned.

Location: Hogwarts Study Room
Date: 8 April 2020
Time: 4:00 p.m.

Anastasia would kill for a time-turner right about now. She was buried, positively buried in homework, busy trying to assert dominate over all the bratty little first years that seemed to think they were in charge of everything, practicing flying, and dealing with boys on top of all of that. The 13-year-old was swamped. The Common Room was, per usual, far too loud to actually study, and the library was uncommonly full. That was why she had chosen the study room that particular day. She had some bad memories from the last time she remembered going there, which, long story short, had resulted in Ana committed theft and then arson in fairly short order.

Her long thick hair was pulled into a French fishtail braid, her uniform looked rather different than it had last year. Despite the fact the uniform itself was the same as it had always been. However, between Ana's growth spurt and recent interest in boys, her skirt now fell several inches shorter than it had during her first year and her tie wasn't as pristine and perfect as it was last year. She still looked fashionable and put together, just not as much like a doll as she had last year.

As she entered the room, she noticed it was fairly empty. She wondered if everyone who was normally here was in the library, or it was just that nobody ever came here. She noticed a small blonde Gryffindor and a Hufflepuff, both of whom were likely first years. If Ana hadn't been in study mode, she would have likely done something to show the Hufflepuff who was in charge, such as set them on fire as she had to the last Hufflepuff firstie she'd encountered. She wasn't particularly inclined to worry about the Gryffindor since she had heard some of the rumors circulating her house and was pretty sure everyone in her house knew she wasn't someone to cross.

As she sat and begin her homework, she heard the Gryffindor practicing Ana's absolute favorite spell. Clearly, the little blonde had excellent taste. However, she did keep her wand out and ready, since that particular spell had a lot of room for error. She was quite glad she did after a moment. She heard shrieks and glanced up and saw a flame shoot towards the Hufflepuff. A flaming Hufflepuff was quite normal at this point in Ana's Hogwarts career, so she just watched amusedly as the one from the yellow house freaked out and stopped the spell.

Twirling her wand  in her fingers absently, she began to turn back to her homework. However, she stopped when she heard a voice that she assumed was the Hufflepuff's yelling at someone, likely the other Gryffindor, in a very unHufflepuff manner. Oh, calm the hell down, you're a Hufflepuff, you've been on fire before, Ana thought rolling her eyes. Unable to avoid drama when it was this close, she turned around just as the Huffle was saying something about getting the other girl expelled from Hogwarts. Ana wanted to laugh at that. She had done far worse with that particular spell in the past week, and she hadn't gotten so much as a detention for it. She highly doubted that this girl would get in any trouble for it.

Still, there was too much fun to be had. Dramatically flipping her braid as she turned to the Huffle, her normal 'mean girl' expression in full force. She knew that she was older than both of the others, and thus in charge. "You aren't honestly trying to blame this poor girl for what you just did, are you? Because we all saw you trying to set her on fire. In fact, were I you, I would leave before the amazing older Gryffindor got a chance to call a prefect or a professor to look into getting you expelled," she said, her disgust evident. She didn't particularly care much about getting the stupid Puff expelled, she just rather liked the younger Gryffindor's spirt and her taste in spells. The Hufflepuff sputtered in protest and Anastasia arched an eyebrow, daring the flammable jerk to speak. Finally, the Hufflepuff scowled, gathered their nasty yellow things, and left sullenly.

She turned to the blonde girl and looked her up and down, her expression not changing from the one that had intimidated the Hufflepuff enough that she was sure that he was going to go home and cry to mommy about it. After a moment, Anastasia pressed her lips together. "What's your name, love?" Ana asked. While her words sounded sweet, her tone and her expression would tell the younger Gryffindor that her intentions were not entirely decided.

indentAdelyn was taking each word that the Hufflepuff was throwing at her with a mixture of acceptance (after all, she did deserve it) and an underlying sense of confusion. Weren't Hufflepuff's supposed to be... nice? This Hufflepuff seemed to be borrowing some language that Adelyn had only seen Slytherin's use, so while she was merely nodding and allowing the student adorned in yellow to unleash their anger on her, she couldn't help but suppress a smirk at some of the students phrases. Geez, were they even using this correctly? I mean, Adelyn had never heard of a -

indentAdelyn was grabbed from her thoughts the moment that a pretty girl - at least one year her senior, it appeared - stood up, adorned in a red and gold uniform similar to Adelyn's (but somehow pulling it off so, so much better Adelyn's sleeves were certainly a few centimeters too long) and began to chew the Hufflepuff out. Hard. The Hufflepuff opened their mouth to protest, but the Gryffindor wasn't stopping anytime soon. To be honest, Adelyn was simply stunned. She felt as though a frozen charm had suddenly been cast on her, because all she could do was watch the girl with a sense of awe.

indentAdelyn was usually the one standing up to the bullies. But unlike this girl, Adelyn didn't command respect as well as she did. Usually, the blonde's tiny frame sucked out any other intimidation factors that Adelyn might have had, and she often had to resort to her own cleverness to retrieve any stolen items from the bullies. If Adelyn had any of the air that this girl had, she was sure she could have made some of her rivals burst into tears. Her words were so elegantly sewn together and so confident that even Adelyn felt ashamed of herself - while she should have for the entire flame incident, she was now unsure who exactly had been yelling at who.

indentThe Hufflepuff, infuriated and red in the face, stormed out of the room with their things in their arms. Adelyn watched as they left in an angry manner, secretly savoring the moment. She wasn't sure that she had - or would ever- see a Hufflepuff so angry again. This girl had to be intense to get someone who was known for their kindness to burst out of the room like they were part werewolf, hunched over and steaming in anger. If Adelyn had been a mere bystander, she definitely would have laughed.

indentThe words from the mystery girl shocked Adelyn back into reality, whose blonde hair whipped around from the velocity at which she swung her head. She was still in a state of shock as it seemed, but she quickly returned to reality, shaking her head slightly to ensure that she wasn't trapped in a dream, "Oh! Sorry, Adelyn, Adelyn Sinclair - I'm a First Year..." Adelyn drifted off, her attention turning towards the door before she looked back at the older girl, "That was incredible, I haven't seen anyone tremble like that unless they're in front of a Slytherin." Adelyn laughed lightly, but quickly cut herself off, the gravity of the situation sinking into Adelyn's consciousness. If this girl had been there to tell the Hufflepuff off, she had certainly been there to see Adelyn almost kill the poor student. Adelyn quickly put her hands to her mouth, eyes wide, "Oh my god, you totally saw what I did."

As the younger girl watched in awe, Anastasia felt rather proud of herself. When the blonde began to speak, Ana just knew that she had to take this girl under her wing. Between the fact that she was another Gryffindor, their proclivity for that particular spell, and the fact that this girl was simply adorable, the brunette had no other option.  She pressed her lips together as the younger girl spoke. The longer she spoke, the firmer Ana's resolution to corrupt watch over her became.

Ana chuckled a little when the girl said that she was a first year. Yes, love, she could tell. Not that mishaps with Incendio could only happen to first years, but ones that were so clearly avoidable and completely accidental generally only happened to first years. Anastasia's mishaps with the spell had been more an issue of her committing arson, and less an issue of her having difficultly with the spell. She also wondered if the girl was a muggle-born since she had tried something like switching her wand hand since that was what Ana assumed her mistake was. The incarnation had sounded correct, and it was rather difficult to mess up on the wand motion although it did happen. Switching one's wand hand would often cause results like these. Ana had heard of people who could use either hand, but it took a bit of training, and the ones she had heard of were extremely powerful Aurors for the most part.

When the girl stopped talking, Ana smiled rather like a cat that had just eaten a bird and was very pleased with itself. Generally, when she smiled like that, people would know something bad was coming, but at the moment, it was actually just she was rather proud of herself for once. She was also extremely amused by the younger Gryffindor. Anastasia had made Slytherins tremble. She had also attempted to hex a fifth year Slytherin during the first week her first year, which hadn't exactly gone well, but in retrospect, it had certainly been a good indicator of things to come. She also realized that she had hexed a Ravenclaw first year and set a Hufflepuff first year on fire this week, but hadn't done a thing to any Slytherins. She made a mental note that she would need to remedy that. After all, she had a reputation to keep up. Actually, she didn't really, which was part of how it all worked so well, but she was sure she would after everything she had done recently. Arguably, the things she had done were far worse than what she had done in her first year, and she hadn't gotten in any trouble for them. Not that she minded, just found it rather odd.

"It's lovely to meet you, Adelyn," Anastasia said, her expression unreadable. "And yes, I absolutely saw that." She waited a moment before continuing, just because she was a bit of a sadist and wanted to see what the younger Gryffindor would say. Were it Ana in a situation like this, she would probably attempt to fight the older student or act as though it had actually been the Hufflepuff's fault. "That just so happens to be one of my favorite spells, although I wouldn't recommend trying to change your wand hand again."
